What are the mechanisms of office chairs ✔ Design, types, rocking mechanisms

Computer work, study, gaming are associated with many hours of sitting in one position. To reduce the load on the back, to ensure maximum comfort and functionality, you need to carefully consider the choice of chair. For convenience, the mechanisms that the chair is equipped with are largely responsible. In this article, we talk about what rocking, height and backrest adjustment mechanisms are for office and gaming computer chairs.

Piastra

This is the easiest and cheapest seat height adjustment mechanism. It does not provide rocking or other options for changing the position of the chair. Piastra is a block with a lever that opens the valve on the gas lift. When the valve is opened, the piston in the gas lift moves and a comfortable seat height can be adjusted.

Piastra has a simple design, so it is reliable, inexpensive and easy to replace if necessary. But an office chair with such a mechanism will not provide the necessary comfort if you have to work at a computer for more than 3 hours a day. In order to work comfortably, it is advisable to choose chairs with backrest adjustment and a rocking mechanism – they allow you to reduce the load on your back.

Basic spring mechanisms

In office chairs, in addition to the piastra, a spring mechanism is installed to adjust the backrest. One of the most common options is permanent contact. This mechanism connects the seat and backrest. Inside there is a spring, which ensures a constant fit of the back to the back. If no one is sitting on the chair, then the backrest is slightly tilted forward under the action of the spring. As soon as a person sits down and leans back, the spring is compressed. When a person leans forward, the spring is released, the backrest remains pressed to the back. Due to the constant support, the muscles get tired less. A more advanced top gun system is called the Deep Tilt or knee mechanism. Deep Tilt differs in that different levers are responsible for height adjustment and swing. This allows you to achieve a deeper buildup. The rest of the functions are the same as those of the standard top gun: fixing in the working position, changing the rocking stiffness. The mechanism is highly reliable, it is placed on expensive models of office furniture.

Models with top guns are suitable in cases where continuous computer work does not exceed 3 hours a day.

A common disadvantage of centered systems is that when leaning back in the extreme position, the legs may not reach the floor. It’s not very comfortable. There is no such problem in mechanisms with a displaced axis – during their operation, the legs are on the floor continuously.

Multiblock and its variations

The most complex and functional system of rocking and chair adjustment is implemented in multiblocks. If the seat and backrest are connected by a rigid connection to install the top gun, then when using the multiblock, the backrest can change its inclination relative to the seat. In this case, swinging with a large amplitude is possible. In terms of the number of functions, multiblocks surpass all other mechanisms:

Changing the height of the seat, backrest and adjusting the stiffness of the backrest.
Seat depth setting.
Adjustable backrest angle from 0-135°. In some models, you can move the backrest to a semi-recumbent and recumbent position, while balancing the chair does not allow tipping.
Large swing. The chair allows you to change the position of the body, take breaks to unload the back and legs.

A common ratio is 3:1. This means that if the backrest is tilted by 15°, the seat will tilt by 5°. Proportional deflection allows you to maintain a comfortable body position. This version of multiblocks is installed on computer chairs with high ergonomics.
Asynchronous swing mechanism. The back and seat move independently of each other, following the movements of the human body. For example, the seat remains stationary while the backrest swings. Support is provided where needed. The asynchronous rocking mechanism is the most complex, it is controlled by three levers that allow you to adjust the chair as comfortably as possible for a person.
Offset multiblock. This is a design that eliminates the disadvantage of centering the axis of rotation – lifting the legs off the floor when leaning back. If the axis moves forward, then the legs are on the floor continuously. This improves the ergonomics of the office chair, as sitting with support on the legs is the physiological position of the body.

Multiblock chairs are the best choice for office workers who spend 3 to 8 hours a day in front of a computer.

Extra features in office chairs

To enhance the attractiveness of their products, office furniture manufacturers add extra features to standard mechanisms. Some of these features are very useful:

Anti-shock – a system that prevents the chair from tipping over in case of a sharp push or intense rocking. The anti-shock is activated at the maximum deflection, smoothly bringing the back to its normal position. The mechanism increases convenience and safety in the workplace.
Slider – mechanism for changing the depth of the seat. Usually there are 5 positions. The slider is especially convenient if computer furniture is chosen for a teenager. As he grows, he will be able to change the chair settings for the most ergonomic body position.

In addition to plastic and metal, the cross can be made of fiberglass. In terms of endurance, this material can be compared with plastic – it can withstand about 90 kg. If a person weighing 100 kg sits in a chair made of plastic or fiberglass, the structure will break or bend.

Gaslift is a vertical column above the cross, on which the chair rises and falls. It is made of metal, but it can be covered with plastic, this does not affect the strength.

Construction and assembly. Good chairs usually have a frame made of strong machined rebar. Counterfeits or cheap chairs may have poor welds, or the metal itself may be too thin. In this case, there is a risk that the chair will break under the person.

The backrest must take into account the curvature of the spine. Therefore, in some chairs, its height can be adjusted to fit your height. And on the back of the chair, lumbar supports and a headrest for the neck are installed. It is better if their height is adjustable or the emphasis can be removed. Due to different builds, it will be comfortable for one person to sit on a chair with a straight back, for another – with a strong bend in the lumbar region.

Leatherette or eco-leather is an artificial leather. It wears out faster than natural. Usually the chair loses its presentation within three years: scuffs, cracks appear, the material begins to crumble.

Textile upholstery is cheaper. An armchair with textile upholstery is not so hot in summer, and in winter it is not as cold as a leather one.
