Phone battery life estimate refers to the average usage profile for a typical user. Based on independent estimates by Strategy Analytics in the US and UK between 2021/12/08 and 2021/12/20 for pre-production SM-S9 models01, SM-S906 and SM-S908 with default settings on 5G Sub6 networks (NOT tested on 5G mmWave network). Actual battery life will vary depending on network environment, features and applications used, frequency of calls made and messages sent, number of charge/discharge cycles, and many other factors.

The amount of internal memory available to the user is less than the total memory of the device, because some of the memory is occupied by the operating system and applications that support the operation of the device. Actual user memory may vary by carrier and after firmware update.

The device operates on 4G/LTE networks. 5G network support on your device may vary by country, region, carrier, and software version. The operation of the device in 5G networks is possible only when using the supported frequency bands.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 long-term review | DGL.RU

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is just around the corner, so it would be nice to sum up all the impressions about its predecessor – Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4. We’ve been using it daily for almost 10 months now. This in-depth Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 review focuses on our overall experience and impressions. They may be useful if you are going to purchase it now.

As you may already know, we also use Huawei Mate Xs 2, which we have already written about. If you’re considering buying a foldable phone, you should also read that review.

We must admit that for a long time we were skeptics when it came to foldable mobile phones with flexible screens. First of all, because of the new technology, which was still at the initial stage in the first generations of such devices. In fact, all three of Samsung’s first foldable phones were skipped by us, and we ended up with the 4th generation. Because it was he who we considered mature enough to satisfy our desires and needs. Thus, this review of the long-term use of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 refers specifically to this model, and not to its predecessors.

When Samsung launched the first Fold phone on the market, many compromises had to be made in order to get a truly revolutionary product. Both in regards to the screen itself and overall usability. For example, the first generation was extremely sensitive to dust. The folding hinges weren’t even close to the ones we see today, and the lid display was practically useless. So you had to pay a lot for a device that had to be cared for like a newly born kitten.

The second and third generations brought significant changes in all directions, but we avoided them too. Not so much because of the imperfection of technology, but because of the habit of using ordinary smartphones, which over time have reached a really high level of quality and usability.

When the fourth generation appeared at the end of last summer, a lot has changed. The display of the case is finally usable, although not to the maximum extent. For example, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is wide enough to be used like a regular smartphone with just a cover screen. The same applies to Huawei Mate Xs 2.

The folding display itself has undergone further improvements, both in build quality and in the display itself. The result is such a mod that the difference between it and what is on the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra has become almost negligible. There’s also water resistance, which is a huge improvement over the first generation, but we’re still waiting for dust protection. Despite everything, the latter can often cause more damage than water.

So, our acquaintance with this device began when we became interested in it and collected more information about all its characteristics. The benefits of a large screen when unfolded need no explanation. However, our biggest concern was the overall thickness of the case when folded.

When it comes to the Fold4 hinge, you can appreciate it like some other parts of the phone. After only a few months of use, the hinge simply broke, leaving our phone half-folded. It was replaced with a new one, but after a few more months of operation, similar problems arose again.

As a result, the display once again cannot be rotated to 100%, i.e. the display cannot reach a completely flat state. We are very frustrated by this, and we are again thinking about taking it to a repair center.

It turned out we were right. The lid display on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 isn’t exactly user-friendly, except that it’s really comfortable to operate with one hand.

When we compared it to the Huawei Mate Xs 2, which looks like a classic smartphone when folded, our disappointment was obvious. This, of course, does not apply to Fold4, since it is noticeably thicker, but also narrower. Thus, there are two serious shortcomings. In the meantime, Xiaomi has also released the Mix 2 Fold, which opens in the same way as Samsung, unlike Huawei (vice versa). Most importantly, when folded, it is much thinner, so it can also be used as a regular phone.

Huawei and Xiaomi have managed to create much thinner foldable devices than Samsung. They also extended them so they can be used even when folded. However, they also have other serious drawbacks that can be potential barriers to buying. Huawei ships last year’s processor, no 5G network support, a result of US sanctions, and no water resistance certification. Although it comes without Google apps, they can be installed in just a minute.

Another issue is that Huawei, like Xiaomi, offers a version of Android that is not adapted to large displays. Thus, this is the main advantage of Samsung. Consequently, Huawei and Xiaomi have made objectively the best devices in terms of hardware, while Samsung has done the best job in terms of software. And it is for this reason that we have chosen the Galaxy Z Fold4 as one of our everyday devices.

As you may have already learned, we used Huawei Mate Xs 2 in parallel. In addition, Xiaomi has a problem – it is not available on the global market, but only in China. Of course, you can always order it from one of the Chinese online stores. But in this case, be prepared for additional costs such as paying customs, VAT, separate postage, etc. In the end, you get a device on which you will have to install Google services yourself, because Xiaomi Fold comes with a Chinese ROM , that is, without Google services, like Huawei.

When we started using the then new Fold4, we immediately realized that the camera from the Galaxy S22 Ultra was missing. Hence, one of the biggest trade-offs you’ll have to deal with is that the Fold4 simply doesn’t have as good a camera as the model above. And even S21 Ultra, and S20 Ultra. The 10x optical zoom we’ve had for the past three years is still lacking on this device even after 10 months of use. Moreover, it’s not just the zoom, but the quality of the photos in general.

Now it may seem that the Fold4 camera is bad, but this is not entirely true. It’s just not as good as the Galaxy S line. Even if it’s not the best on the market, it’s still quite usable for everyday use. For both photos and videos. What might disappoint you is the selfie camera hidden in the flip display, but you can use the one on the lid display, which is incomparably better.

Okay, enough about the shortcomings. Let’s talk about the benefits. Definitely the best part of this device is its software. A unified user interface based on Android 12L (and now 13) is something neither Xiaomi nor Huawei owners can dream of. Many parts of the operating system are so well adapted to the large display with seamless switching from one application to another. One of the best features is multitasking, which allows you to have three apps displayed at the same time. However, in most cases you will use two. Each of them is on one half of the folding display.

What we particularly like is that the device offers the possibility to completely “separate” the cover display from the folding display. Namely, for each of them, you can separately define icons, labels, widgets, background images, etc. For example, you can put a widget with a to-do list on the cover. But it can be located in a completely different place on the flip display. The same goes for app icons. Thanks to this great feature, you can set certain priorities. That is, which apps or widgets do you need for a quick view on the outside, and which ones when unfolding the device?

On the other hand, if you don’t like this concept, you can use the settings to specify that the outer screen is a folding mirror image. Of course, this entails a limitation in the ability to display the amount of content. And now we move on to those details of the big screen that we mentioned above. The first and most obvious benefit is reading text online or in any other form such as Microsoft Word or PDF. The same applies to presentations. Such a screen provides an incomparably better experience. Sometimes more interesting, more pleasing to the eye, and often more fun.

Websites and news aggregators (e.g. Flipboard, Feedly, Google News…) are much clearer, and this is because of the screen format. That is, they are easier to read. We can’t really say anything about the games, because we don’t really play them. However, we tried playing Asphalt 9, and it just doesn’t compare to what’s on the S22 Ultra or any other regular smartphone. The same thing seems to happen with other games, at least those that are adapted to this type of screen.

On the other hand, there are applications that are not adapted to such a large display, so it may look a little strange. For example, the Wolt app only uses the center of the screen, leaving two empty edges on the sides. It is worth praising Netflix, HBO and YouTube, whose interface is incomparably better compared to familiar smartphones. The same goes for email, Word, and Excel, which you can edit on the go. And even if you trade stocks or cryptocurrencies, and often look at the charts. The large display is very useful as it shows a lot more content and data.

You can list these benefits all day long and still not get bored. But we also want to mention some small features that we didn’t really like or didn’t find very useful. One of them is the so-called taskbar. That is, at the bottom of the screen, you can literally place the taskbar, as in Windows. You edit it however you want, with an optional display of recently used apps. The problem is that these icons are too small for the fingers and do not meet the level of usability that one would expect. We’re not saying it won’t be comfortable for you, but we still prefer the edge panel.

Another point that needs to be emphasized is the keyboard. In the basic settings, it is cut in half. With a gap in the middle, which Samsung considers ergonomic. In truth, the new version of Gboard also offers a split keyboard. We prefer the regular full-sized keyboard that we got used to in just two days.

To wrap up the keyboard, let’s also mention the case’s display. It is quite narrow, so the keyboard can be used with one hand. Just like on mobile phones ten years ago. However, jumping from one display to another can cause OCD in some people.

The 4400 mAh battery is not something this device can boast of, nor is 25W fast charging. By today’s standards, this is very slow. Now we can discuss this problem for hours, but we were ready for such a compromise. Because we knew that the battery would not last as long as the S22 Ultra. However, compared to the S22 Ultra, this model offers more features that we need and are already used to. It is not a problem for us to charge the device twice a day or carry a power bank with us.

In summary, we can say that the Galaxy Z Fold4 really surprised us positively. However, taking into account some compromises regarding the thickness (when folded), which we initially agreed to. This thickness is not a decisive factor, as it might seem if you compared it with a regular smartphone. All in all, this is a great device with a lot of potential.

What I would like to see in the successor is better work on the hinge. Since we’ve already seen renders and rumors of the Z Fold 5, we can’t expect a wider case display. But this shortcoming can be compensated by other great features that we don’t know about yet.
