What’s the difference between Google TV and Android TV?

Google created a big buzz and a boatload of confusion when it launched Google TV, its second smart TV platform, in September 2020. With basically the same features and interface, you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for Google’s long-standing smart TV operating system Android TV, which powers some of the best streaming devices out there. However, there are a number of key differences.

For starters, Google TV is the more modern, updated version of the Android-powered platform, providing more features, better compatibility with Google services, and generally a better user experience across the board. Still, there are some reasons to opt for Android TV, like the presumed lower prices for using a somewhat outdated operating system.

As Google continues its rollout of the newer interface on the latest TVs, Android projectors, and set-top boxes, we look at the differences between Google TV and Android TV, as well as what the future holds for both platforms.

What is Android TV?

First released in June 2014, Android TV was a game changer for home entertainment tech, competing with the likes of Apple TV, its iOS-powered counterpart.

Android TV is based on Google’s Android mobile operating system, offering access to the Google Play Store for apps and games on your TV while also giving you handy features like Google Cast support and voice control via Google Assistant. It was quickly adopted as smart TV middleware by the likes of Sharp and Sony, with its release also leading to a wide range of smart TV boxes hitting the market preloaded with the operating system.

The key to the Android TV experience is its homescreen interface. It encourages content discovery by suggesting shows and movies from your apps and subscription services like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube. However, this feature was greatly improved by Google TV.

What is Google TV?

Google TV first hit TV screens in 2020 when it was launched alongside a new version of Google’s streaming dongle, the aptly named Chromecast with Google TV. It’s the de facto smart TV interface for new Google-powered TVs and set-top boxes that the major manufacturers are now releasing.

Rather than being a new operating system, Google TV is a software layer running on top of Android TV, explaining why they are similar in many ways.

In the same way that launchers give a makeover and new functionality to Android phones, Google TV brings a new user interface with a different look and feel, while Android TV still provides the backbone for the experience. As a result, Android TV is still quite functional, getting updates as recently as December 2022.

As well as sporting a slightly refined design, the newer Google TV interface offers a greater focus on personalized content using AI. It also offers a dedicated tab for live broadcasts. You also get additional smart home functionality, the use of a mobile remote through the Google TV app, and several other benefits that improve the user experience.

What are the main similarities between Android TV and Google TV?

Both Android TV and Google TV are TV operating systems from Android that allow you to watch and interact with content. Both platforms offer the same massive selection of smart TV apps, streaming services, and games. They also feature support for voice commands with Google Assistant, smart home controls, casting with Chromecast, and media streaming.

What are the main differences between Android TV and Google TV?

While Google TV and Android TV have many similarities, there are more differences when you get down to the nitty-gritty details. Here are some of the key differences between the two television operating systems.

Discovery

Where the two platforms diverge is how content discovery is presented on the homepage.

While Android TV’s recommendations are based on streaming apps rather than personal taste, Google TV uses Google’s machine learning, Google Assistant, and Google’s Knowledge Graph information base to learn your viewing habits. This data is then used to make tailored suggestions on the homescreen’s dedicated For You tab, show relevant promotions, and highlight popular content in your region.

Live TV

Google TV also has a live TV tab, which displays previews of active broadcasts from the likes of Sling TV and YouTube TV. If something piques your interest, tap the thumbnail to go straight into the broadcast. You don’t need to open multiple apps to find something to watch.

Smart home devices

If you have a Google Home device as part of your smart home ecosystem, you’ll want to set up Google TV, as it allows more smart home device compatibility. You can use voice commands to turn on your TV, crank the volume, and even turn on your favorite scary movie from Netflix.

It’s just not with voice commands, either. Google TV can also access the live feeds from security cameras and control smart lights in your home, so you can turn on the lights and check that the front door is locked for the really scary parts.

Parental Controls

Another differentiator comes with user profiles and parental controls. Unlike Android TV, Google TV supports multiple user profiles for kids under a single adult’s Google account, with personal recommendations for each profile. While content restrictions on Android TV are handled via its system-wide parental settings, Google TV lets you create child user profiles with their own set of boundaries for the content, which can be managed via the Google Family Link service.

Mobile remote

Nothing is worse than losing the remote, but Google TV gives you a backup plan. To access the Google TV app, look for the mobile remote button in the lower-right corner. If you push that, you can control your Google TV interface from your phone without the actual remote, giving you all the time you need to track it down.

Will Android TV devices be upgraded to Google TV?

Most new Google-powered devices hitting the market, such as Sony Bravia and TCL TVs, are preloaded with Google TV from the outset, but it doesn’t look like older Android TV devices will get an upgrade to the new platform.

It’s not all bad news for owners of existing Android TV kits, as they won’t be left behind completely. Recent updates for some Android TV devices such as the NVIDIA Shield, Xiaomi Mi set-top boxes, and Sony TVs have received a revamped user interface that looks close to Google TV, with large circular app icons on the left side and some of Google TV’s new features being ported over.

Among those additions are the Discover tab, which features content recommendations grouped by genre, and the Watchlist feature. Located under the Library section tab, Watchlist lets you add movies and TV shows you want to check out later.

Should I get an Android TV?

If you’re in the market for a new smart TV and have the option between Android TV and Google TV, you must be dealing with an older model. Since 2020, Google has exclusively shipped devices with the newer interface, so Android TVs are getting rarer and rarer as time passes, and not in a baseball card kind of way.

Subsequently, we’ll always recommend a Google TV, as the feature set is more robust, it offers more functionality, and the interface is more user-friendly. Plus, it gets more frequent updates, with it being the primary focus of Google.

Still, Android TVs will typically be more affordable because they’ll likely have a shorter life span. If you’re trying to pinch pennies, you could do worse than an Android TV. After all, the operating system is updated, with the last one coming in December 2022, so it’s not like you’re working with outdated technology.

Android TV – what is it and why?

Nov 1, 2021

Android TV is an operating system for TVs and set-top boxes developed by Google. It continues the traditions of the OS of the same name for smartphones, but taking into account the features of TV. Allows you to install applications and games from Google Play for the big screen and watch movies without cable channels. In the future, experts believe, this system will dominate.

How the Android TV system works

Simplified, the operating system on the TV allows you to do the same things on TV that you are used to doing on your smartphone interactive entertainment. Android TV is essentially a code (its kernel is Linux, written in the C and C++ programming languages) or a set of algorithms that connect the processor, memory and other elements of the TV computing system directly with programs and applications.

How the operating system works in Android TVs. The architecture for developers

Android TV, or the “content mart” as the OS was called in early press releases, is close to Android in smartphones. The difference is that it is, as it were, truncated, but it also has its advantages:

Criteria Android TV Android for smartphones
Functions Limited settings Full access
Launcher (desktop) Cannot be changed User choice
Google Play Apps Only with support for large screens and remote control Any available in the Google Play store
Updates Depends on Google, stable updates Depends on the smartphone manufacturer (may not be updated at all)
Where can I install Only on TVs and set-top boxes certified by Google On any device

Android TV is a recent invention. Google announced the OS in June 2014. The very idea of creating an operating system for TVs and set-top boxes is older – the first developments under the name Google TV began back in 2009 through the joint efforts of the search engine and partners: Intel, Sony and Logitech. A year later, the first TVs based on the system appeared, but there was no demand, and the program was curtailed.

Are smart TVs and Android TVs the same thing?

“Smart TV” appeared by analogy with “Smart Phone”. The label “smart” in both cases means the ability to run applications and games that were once the prerogative of a desktop computer on TVs and phones, respectively. From this we can conclude that Smart TV is a general concept that describes the entire range of technologies for integrating interactive services into TVs, including the Android TV operating system and any of its analogues.

According to Statista, 70% of TVs sold were Smart TVs in 2018 (this is the latest sales statistics). In other words, they had either the Android TV OS or its analogues. Now the percentage is likely to be higher. In 2021, more than half of the TVs in the world, 52% (including those bought a few years ago), according to Hub Entertainment Research, belong to the Smart TV category. Among people over 35, the share of owners of such TVs is even higher – 61%.

Android TV took a new turn in 2014 when the company released its own Nexus Player and provided the ADT-1 developer kit (also a set-top box, but for app testing). In 2016, Google launched partnerships with global tech brands. This moment can be considered the beginning of the mass implementation of the OS.

What the Android interface looks like in 2021. Home screen of Haier 75 Smart TV MX

Advantages of Android TV

1. Large selection of channels and services with movies, videos and music without connecting an analog antenna, cable or satellite TV. They are available using one of two technologies:

  • IPTV, that is, interactive television over the Internet Protocol. Available through a telecom operator.
  • OTT (Over the Top), Internet TV, where content is delivered directly to the user, bypassing the operator. All popular online cinemas and video services work using this technology: Amediateka, Kinopoisk HD, Netflix, Hulu, Disney and even YouTube. Movies and series can be accessed both on websites and through apps.

2. Applications and games designed with large screens and user behavior in mind (they differ when interacting with a smartphone’s touch screen and remote control). Now there are more than 2.5 thousand such applications on Google Play. Google controls their compatibility with TV, so the likelihood of encountering an application with bugs is lower than on a smartphone or tablet.

3. Internet surfing through the built-in Google Chrome browser (you can install any other browser that supports TVs), viewing and listening to media files (photos, videos, music) from external media (flash drives, memory cards), as well as recording broadcasts to a hard drive .

4. You can stream video from your PC, laptop, smartphone, and tablet to your TV via the Internet using the Chromecast function.

5. Simple interface. Management on Android TV is intuitive, the first setup wizard is the same for all types of devices, so if you have used the OS once, there will be no problems with new technology. There is support for Google Assistant for voice search and control.

The latest version of Android TV, the 11th in a row, was released on September 22, 2020. At the end of 2021, Google promises to release the 12th one, which will render the user interface in 4K resolution (namely, the interface, 4K content is already supported by ) and will allow you to adjust the smooth transition of the frame rate. You can update the operating system on your TV on the “Settings” screen by clicking the “Search for Updates” button.

Cons of Android TV OS

There were also some cons, but they are mostly common to all smart TVs:

  • Updates happen less frequently than we would like (usually once a year).
  • The programs you are downloading are taking up space on the hard drive of the TV or set-top box, it may run out. If there is an excess of them, the system can work slowly.
  • Not all apps are free, free apps often show ads.
  • You need to create an account and register with Google in order to access the services. Without an account, you won’t be able to download apps and use most Android TV features.
  • Deficiencies in privacy. Android apps may collect data about your interests, the shows you watch, and the sites you watch to make recommendations and ads for you.

Differences of Android for different brands

Partially the disadvantages of the system are solved by the open source code (Android Open Source Project). Any developer can add the OS, make the necessary changes or create personal programs for their TVs. According to Google, this protects the market from monopolization and opens the way to innovation. Therefore, each manufacturer, including Haier, may have a different set of programs for the OS.

If the vendor drastically deviates from the source code, such a modified system is wrapper – it sort of covers the Android source code. It has a separate name, such as Wildred, Yandex TV. It is created to optimize the operation of the system for specific hardware and services, increase performance and give its customers an original experience.

“Zest” Android TV Haier

Haier has been putting the EVO TV app on its TVs since 2021 – this is a development of the company. It saves time when searching for films, helps you learn about new releases from editors’ selections, as well as search for content by category and go to the partner cinema player: Kinopoisk HD, Okko, Start, Megogo. The application regularly holds promotions with gifts for users. More details – follow the link.

Interface for the evo tv movie search application. Works only on Haier TVs

How to run Android TV on TV

There are two options:

  • Buy a TV with a pre-installed Android system (sometimes they are simply labeled as Smart TV, combining both concepts).
  • Buy a TV with an HDMI connector and connect an Android TV box (full-sized set-top boxes are called TV Boxes, but there are mini versions that look like a regular USB flash drive).

Installing Android on an old TV will not work. We wrote above that devices with a preinstalled OS are certified by Google. But this is not even the point, but the fact that old TVs simply do not have the necessary architecture: a processor, a hard drive. There is simply nowhere to put the system. In this case, the TV box becomes the solution.

Opinions about what is better – a TV or a set-top box, differ on the network. Both there and there there is a processor, memory, network adapter, connectors. As a mouse and keyboard – a remote control, and often with a voice control and search function. The difference is that the former offer a boxed solution where everything is set up, while the latter need a monitor or TV screen and a more detailed setup.

Examples of set-top boxes (or media players) in two form factors

Comparison of Android TV and set-top boxes

Let’s denote the main advantages of the first and second in the table:

to update

Criteria Android TV Android set-top box
Remote control One – universal, for managing channels and applications on TV TV remote control and set-top box separately – you need to look for each of them and use both to interact with the TV
Desktop interface (launcher) The same for all brands. You can change it only through file managers, unofficially Depends on the set-top box model. You can install any launcher from Google Play
Overheating Televisions have a cooling system that prevents them from heating up above a set temperature Set-top boxes, especially cheap ones, often get hot. The case is too small to fit the powerful fan
Setting Ready to go as soon as you sign in to your Google account Needs to be connected to a TV set-top box
OS update Regularly, easy to update via “Settings” in the TV control menu Depends on the model and type of firmware: sometimes old TV Boxes are not updated, or you need to go to the website of the company that released the set-top box
Price High compared to set-top boxes — from 17,990 ₽ for TV Haier There are both cheap and expensive, but still cheaper than a new TV
Replacement for Changing the TV to a new one is expensive You can change at any time or improve the old TV if the picture on it suits you

Is there an alternative to Android TV?

In 2020, Rethink Technology Research concluded that Android TV will be the number one operating system for set-top boxes and smart TVs in five years. The hegemony will be shared by the American Reference Design Kit (RDK), which is used by local corporations Comcast, Liberty Global and other cable companies, and Harmony OS by Huawei, which is expected to capture up to 75% of the Chinese market by 2025.

Sample OS for TVs and set-top boxes

  • Apple tvOS (Apple TV set-top boxes).
  • Roku OS (set-top boxes and more recently Roku TVs, mostly in the US; Haier TVs with this OS also once came out).
  • Fire TV OS (set-top boxes from Amazon). The operating system is only half unique – it is based on the open source Android TV.
  • Google TV (not to be confused with the failed 2010 project). In 2020, the search engine under the old name released a new shell (that is, an addition to its own OS). This is almost the same as Android TV, only the skin is designed for the new Chromecast with Google TV set-top boxes. The main difference is that the main screen of the OS is now based on the recommendations and subscriptions of a particular user. In the future, innovations will be added to the classic Android TV OS.
  • Tizen OS, Web OS, Firefox OS (use a number of South Korean and Japanese brands in their TVs).

Distribution of operating systems in 2018 (Statista data for 2021)

How to choose an Android TV

Most TVs are now released with Android support, so there is plenty to choose from. At the same time, there are no fundamental differences between OS from different manufacturers, except for individual applications (like Haier EVO TV). Therefore, it is better to look at other characteristics:

  • Picture quality: choose TVs that support 4K Ultra HD (8K format is useless for now – there is too little content for it, Full HD, on the contrary, is becoming obsolete).
  • Processor, video card and RAM performance. The speed of Android TV will depend on them (just like with smartphones).
  • Diagonal, design and case thickness. For example, in Haier Smart TV MX series TVs, there is a frameless display, a diagonal run from 32 inches to 75 inches, with a case thickness in the lower part (with connectors) a little more than 6 centimeters (the thickness of the screen itself is three times less).
