quality sound in reports, podcasts and more

Why do we need a voice recorder? All phones have a recording function, you can stop there, but only until the moment when you need high-quality content. Let’s define what a recorder is, why it is needed and what opportunities it gives.

What is a recorder?

This is a device that records sound and converts it into an audio file. The latter can then be transferred to another device: laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc. There are a large number of models on the market with different functionality, size, autonomy, editing and other parameters. Many do not even realize what a useful and multifunctional device it is.

When would you need a recorder?

  • Lectures and meetings. A voice recorder will help you keep track of key information: numbers, indicators, decisions, data – all this is difficult to fit in memory (unless you have the halls of the mind, like Sherlock Holmes). The recorder will save this information and you can use it at any time.

  • Interview and report. The voice recorder will be indispensable for transmitting accurate quotes from the interlocutor. You may not have time to write down the key idea in a notebook, and asking again is not always appropriate. In addition, the intonation of the interlocutor is sometimes more important than words. The recorder will make it possible to make reports even in difficult street conditions or at exhibitions. He will be able to catch the right thing among the cacophony, the phone will definitely not be able to do it.

  • Voice work. Recording on a smartphone often blurs the voice. What if you need to practice speech, its tone, intonation, accents? The recorder will give you the opportunity to rehearse the speech and work on it, and the recording will show your weaknesses: parasitic words, haste, lack of expressiveness of speech, etc.

  • Podcasts. If you want to try yourself in a popular format, then the quality of sound and speech transmission will play a big role. It so happened that a person first listens to what the speaker says, and only then delves into the content. The voice recorder will make the quality of the audio content the strength of the podcast, the rest is up to the author.

  • Record sound on video. Good sound on video is one of the hallmarks of quality content. The camera’s built-in microphone cannot match the quality of voice capture and transmission with a connected recorder.

  • Creativity. A huge amount of popular music began with tape recording during rehearsals: a guitar riff appeared, it urgently needs to be recorded; some hit line to sing along. And if you need to record a group, so that later you can analyze interesting moments in detail? You can record your thoughts on a voice recorder even faster than on paper.

For other scenarios where a voice recorder is useful, see the Tascam Portacapture X8 as an example.

Tascam Portacapture X8 – Creativity Base

Tascam has been manufacturing a variety of equipment for the music industry for over 30 years. We couldn’t get past the new Portacapture X8 voice recorder.

The recorder has two detachable condenser microphones for stereo recording, which can be interchanged if desired. There are two patterns: AB is ideal for creating a wide stereo field, XY for clear reproduction in a narrow field. External microphones can be connected to the device via 4 XLR/Jack line inputs. The inputs have phantom power, which will make it possible to use condenser microphones in conjunction with a voice recorder. External microphones make the recorder flexible to use – Portacapture X8 turns into a complete recording station.

Interesting little things

We said above that you can connect an external microphone. The recorder detects which microphones and external devices you use for recording and changes the name of the files – a cool detail that professionals will appreciate. This will allow you to control the audio capture from the camera connected to the recorder.

The Tascam Portacapture X8 is equipped with several useful applications such as a metronome and a tuner. The most basic is the recording software, and it’s impressive: you have access to several pre-made scripts.

  • Voice The application is ideal for recording interviews, lectures and meetings.

  • Podcast. Used to create podcasts – the recorder can equally well record up to 4 participants in the dialogue.

  • Music. Preset for recording musical instruments and vocals.

  • Field. Mode for recording nature sounds outdoors. Wide scope for creativity: you can record the singing of birds or the sounds of the forest.

  • ASMR. Technology that is designed to cause goosebumps. In short, the recorder is able to record the quietest sounds popular in short videos (for example, anti-stress “pimples”, small taps, whispers, and so on).

  • Manual. Manual mode that allows you to record up to eight tracks (six individual tracks and two stereo mixes).

Preamps are great recording aids, but there are some drawbacks. If you use any of these scenes other than manual, then only the built-in microphones are available to you. You can’t customize scripts for yourself either. If you have experience in recording, you will work in manual mode, and beginners will appreciate the suggested presets.

    Ease of use

The large touch screen recorder is a pleasure to use. If necessary, you can start recording in a couple of seconds with two clicks. The tactile sensations from the level wheel are especially pleasant: it is responsive and has a subtle move. The touch screen in voice recorders is still quite rare, so Portacapture X8 succeeded in this. We are confident that even after long work in the “fields” it will work properly.

    Sound

The recorder copes with strong sound pressure – even at the peak the waveform will be preserved, everything will depend on the dynamic range capabilities of the microphone. Separately, we note the class of the microphone preamplifier, it has a very low level of its own noise. We did a quiet test: we recorded the course of a wristwatch in an acoustic room – the result is impressive! The sound is transmitted with high accuracy and without extraneous hiss, which is often found on records for such gadgets.

The recorder can be conveniently attached to a camera or microphone stand. This is especially effective if you are working outdoors. If you invest in wind protection, then you will have the perfect tool. Portacapture X8 is also great for multi-channel recording: you can demo your band through third-party microphones and a voice recorder.

Why Portacapture X8 high sampling rate?

The recorder can record content at up to 192kHz sampling rate – impressive if the popular standard uses 44.1kHz. A high sampling rate helps to convey overtones and harmonics above 20 kHz – we do not hear them with our ears, but we feel them with other receptors. Because of this, the recordings seem more real and natural, there is no feeling that you are listening to the sound through the “glass”.

There’s a pragmatic side to it: sound design and production often use pitch shifting to correct vocals (for example, you need to “punch” your voice to the right note). If you lower the pitch, then the upper frequencies move into the audible range of the ear, and at low sampling you will hear a dirty sound with digital noise.
