Logitech MX Master 2S vs 3: What’s the Difference?

Both of these mice look strikingly similar next to each other. This makes some sense as the MX Master 3 is an iterative upgrade of the 2S. There are some slight differences that help differentiate the two mice and their overall performance, however.

Performance

The MX Master 2S has become something of a darling for critics and users alike. It isn’t hard to see why this is the case, as the MX Master 2S provides a fine balance between usability and sheer performance.

The 4,000 DPI sensor means the cursor glides with ease, and lower sensitivity settings are readily available on a switch near the mouse wheel. This makes it an ideal choice for tasks like word processing, image editing, and gaming. As all these tasks require different needs in terms of sensitivity, it only makes sense to provide the means to do so.

The MX Master 3 provides the same 4,000 DPI sensor for the optical mouse. In fact, performance all around seems to be virtually identical for the MX Master 3. Where the key differences come into play are the redesign of the scroll wheel and the overall latency one can observe from the MX Master 3.

Logitech took the time to redesign the scroll wheel itself for better performance. The hardware manufacturer has dubbed this MagSpeed, and it is noticeably quieter than the MX Master 2. The scroll wheel is smooth in operation and can switch between a slower traditional mode, as well as a faster mode for quickly scanning through longer documents.

Build Quality

Both mice are built to a premium spec. You can certainly tell just by looking at them that they aren’t cheaper wireless mice. Now, the MX Master 2S is on the heavier side and is weightier overall compared to the MX Master 3. This might not be a huge consideration if you don’t mind a heavier mouse, as the MX Master 2S weighs in at 149.8 grams.

The MX Master 3 itself is a little bit lighter, registering 142.3 grams. This is a slight reduction, overall, and both are still far heavier than some of their counterparts. There are considerations to keep in mind with the MX Master mice, as well. They don’t store their receivers, so the wireless dongle is something you’ll have to keep close at hand.

Fit and finish on the actual mouse are stellar. The MX Master 2S and MX Master 3 are both comfortable in the hand. Both feature a cool matte finish, which keeps your hand from heating up too much with constant use.

The MX Master has a slight edge as it features some slight redesigns to the mouse’s overall shape. This makes it slightly more comfortable to use for longer durations of time, but it is splitting hairs when considering which one is the best for prolonged use.

Connectivity

Both mice use a wireless dongle to connect to the host computer via Bluetooth protocol. Connection strength is rock solid, and latency is kept to a minimum. The MX Master 3 is slightly more responsive, but that’s something you’ll see in measured tests. For practical purposes, they both behave identically.

Both mice also use a rechargeable battery pack, which is stored directly in the mouse. This is handy, as it means you aren’t fumbling for additional batteries when the cells are depleted. You can, of course, use both the MX Master 2S and MX Master 3 as wired mice when charging.

The MX Master 2S uses the older microUSB standard as its main means of charging. If you’re looking for a modern connector, the MX Master 3 uses the newer USB Type-C connector. If you’ve got a fair few devices already using the same connector, the MX Master 3 might be the better choice in that regard.

Other Options

Both the Logitech MX Master 2S and MX Master 3 use the same configuration software. Neither one of the mice have programmable macros. They do, however, support programmable gestures. These work in a similar fashion to a macro, but are based on movements performed with the mouse rather than being assigned to a button.

Logitech Options, the software used for configuration, is passable. It isn’t the best-included software for configuring your peripheral, but it works for its stated purpose. You have the option of programming profiles that you can switch between. It also allows for finer adjustment of the DPI, but there is no option for adjusting the polling rate.

It is, thankfully, compatible with modern Windows and Mac operating systems, though you might have some issues configuring the mouse if running a Linux distro.
