The house in which we will live?
Eighteen student teams built, if not a city, then at least an entire “sunny block”. A demonstration site was created in the capital of the United States, where the latest technological achievements in the field of energy saving and solar energy are exhibited for everyone to see.

You don’t have to build your house from scratch to take advantage of the latest in solar energy, but the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon was designed to do just that—18 student teams took on an empty place to realize their ideas about the “city of the sun”. Students from various colleges and universities spent three years designing houses that could provide 100% of their energy needs from the sun, and this October their developments were brought to Washington and installed on the National Mall square, where these original houses opened their doors. doors in front of the curious. Over the course of the two-week decathlon, the weather went from overcast to downright stormy, putting rooftop solar (PV) systems to the test. Despite the harsh weather, 120,000 visitors stood in line. Now that a 33% increase in heating costs alone is expected compared to last winter, many people came to the exhibition to peep some new ideas for insulating their own home. Here we will talk about the four projects that we liked the most.
The most interesting conclusion of the Solar Decathlon competition was the fact that switching to alternative energy sources does not require sacrificing comfort and habitual lifestyle. In small houses – from the strength of 100 m2 – there are many new original ideas: triple-glazed windows, panels with structurally embedded thermal insulation, and similar tricks that save energy.
Virginia Tech: Let there be light!
A house built by the guys at Virginia Tech doesn’t need electric lighting from sunrise to sunset. Transparent walls let light into the house, and electric blinds regulate the temperature in the rooms. The stretch fabric ceiling reflects and redistributes the streams of light pouring into the house through the windows right under the ceiling. At night, the house lights up like a decorative lantern thanks to ultra-efficient LEDs.

Power unit . The north wall of the house, made of insulated steel panels, can be moved on skids and accessed to the electrical facilities. Twenty lead-acid batteries, if fully charged, can power a house for five days.
Light and color . The south, east and west walls are a transparent polycarbonate sandwich filled with a special Nanogel airgel that diffuses light, sound and provides thermal insulation up to R22 level (about the same as a 20 cm layer of glass wool).
Technologies . The roof, which seems to float above the building, is lined with 36 200-watt SunPower solar panels and is tilted in such a way as to optimally capture sunlight, and direct rainwater to a special receiving tank located above the ceiling.
Beauty . The builders chose laminate flooring, low-flow faucets, and Energy Star electrical equipment for their energy efficiency.
Materials . Lexan transparent adjustable thermal insulation panels. Airgel Cabot. Sunpower solar panels. Motorized MechoShade blinds. Weyerhauser floors. Asus dishwasher.
University of Colorado: Natural Genius
Students named their brainchild BioS(h)IP (roughly translated as “ship of life”), focusing on its key element – building panels made from recycled paper and soy. The idea of caring for nature can be traced throughout the building – it is not in vain that it produces more energy than it consumes, and its creators have received the title of decathlon champions for the second time.
Design . The material of the walls is something like standard insulated building panels (SIP). A heat-insulating material made from soy is sandwiched between cardboard plates pressed from waste paper. These boards, called BioSIP, have thermal insulation properties at the level of R7, that is, twice as good as that of bulk pulp.
Heat trap . There are 34 200-watt SunPower solar panels on the roof of the house. The southwestern wall is adorned with 80 tubes of solar thermal storage. They heat water for household needs, including floor heating.
Excess energy . This house produces so much energy that its excess is enough to power an electric car. For example, in two weeks, while the decathlon lasted, the electric car shown in the photo was able to drive as much as 500 kilometers on excess energy.
Materials . Sonoco insulating boards. Thermal insulating foam BioBased SFI. Solar thermal accumulators Thermomax. Warm floors Warmboard. Heat-reflecting windows with Alpen mirror coating. Electric car GEM E4.
Cornell University: Dice Game
The Cornell team preferred the simplest rectangular shapes. The used wall panels are strong enough to act as load-bearing structures themselves, so it’s easy to combine these bricks into more complex structures. “Each room is a basic building block,” says student Josh Bonaventura-Sparagna. Now the team is working on a business plan for the construction of standard houses with an area of 200 m².
Power supply . The roof, lined with 56 110-watt solar panels, can be installed at the optimal angle for various climatic conditions.
Fresh air . The ventilation system with the possibility of heat recovery sucks outside air through a special heat exchanger-drier and dumps excess heat and moisture outside. As a result, the energy costs required for heating and cooling interior spaces are significantly reduced.
Cotton barrier . The builders chose to insulate the floor from a layer of ordinary worn jeans. Working with such material is easier and safer than with glass wool, and the result is almost the same.
Materials . Solar modules Photovitalics. Teragren bamboo cabinets. Thermal insulation Bonded Logic. Rotor Source heat recovery system. Super efficient American Standard heat pump. Sliding glass door NanaWall. Diva induction cooker. GE Advantium oven.
University of Missouri Roll and Roll Tech: Natural Housing
The Missouri team’s goal was a home that would be self-sufficient in energy while aesthetically blending into suburban living. In their design experiments, the team relied on the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Magic numbers . Many building parameters hide the basis of geometric aesthetics – the “golden section”, that is, the ratio of 1:1.62. This magical number has influenced the work of architects for thousands of years.
First hybrid . The team dared to take the first steps towards the hybridization of solar electric batteries with solar liquid heat storage. On the roof of the building, thin-film amorphous solar panels are combined with copper tubes, so that both electricity and simple warm water can be obtained from one surface.
Aesthetics . Among other things, such a power system looks very light and elegant.
