Introduction
First, a short digression into the corporate classification. IBM, and later Lenovo, launched several series of laptops under the Thinkpad line, aimed at meeting the needs of a wide range of users. Today there are the following series:
- T-series (basic) – full-size, but thin and relatively light universal models,
- P-Series – Mobile Workstations,
- L-series (replaced by the R line) – universal mid-range laptops (they differ in simpler configurations and body materials compared to T),
- X-series – ultra-portable models and transformers,
- E-series, which started as a very cheap SOHO line, like the iSeries used to be.
We will not go into details of the evolution of the classification over more than a quarter of a century separating the subject of the review from today’s reality. We only note that the 7th series of those days roughly corresponds to the current T and P lines, respectively, 5 is X, and 3 is L or E-series.

So, autumn 1995. In October, the Thinkpad 760C is born – one of the first laptop models on the Pentium processor, the ancestor of the 760 series. Our today’s hero, produced from May 1996 to January 1997, will also be released in the case of the 760 model. In fact, there were two cases in this series: a thin “thin” (4.9 cm) supporting only FDD/batteries (case designation 760C) and a thick “thick” (760CD, 5.4 cm) supporting an UltraBay Thick slot for removable drives. It supported FDD, CD-ROM and other options, and could come with both FDD and a CD-ROM drive, then still a four-speed drive.
Notebooks of the 760 series were based on VLSI chipsets. The first models were used as the main bus VLB (Vesa Local Bus, slang Very Long Bus), which almost died out in desktop machines by that time, but lived longer in laptops, like marsupials in Australia. In the isolated mobile segment, low power consumption and smaller logic sizes were more valued. The slot in desktop computers was long for backward compatibility with ISA, while the chips and wiring, on the contrary, were simpler and more compact. And yet at 1996 new versions of the 760 model moved to a more modern PCI (although VLB was also found in some laptops in 1997!)
Child of the Pentium
era
In general, at the time of release, the laptop belonged to the top / upper-middle segment. Pentium processors for mobile applications had just arrived, 10.4- and 11.3-inch screens were standard, and 12 inches were the latest technology. The fields around the screen have almost disappeared – laptops began to take on a modern look.
New to most were CD-ROM drives, which first appeared on IBM’s latest 486 models.

Meet Black Square
As already mentioned, the appearance of Thinkpads has changed little over the years of production. However, the thickness still betrays the respectable age of the 760: 54 mm (44 or 49 for versions without CD and smaller screen). That’s a lot by today’s standards, but par for the course in those days. The SoftTouch coating of the case allowed us to maintain a neat appearance – scratches are hardly noticeable on it, although the coating has worn off at the corners of the laptop’s lid.
In general, the design is very concise: a simple black suitcase. The developers say they wanted to make the laptop look like a bento, a traditional Japanese lunch box that allows you to keep delicate dishes intact and yet convenient as a plate.
I must say that considerable attention is paid to this household item in Japan.
The sides of the case are rich in ports. There is a replaceable drive bay and a front infrared port (there are two of them, for convenience of work) at the front.
Right – two pcmcia slots, PS / 2 connector and Kensington lock hole, left – power button, audio connectors, optional video input and video output, modem port.
A hinged cover hides most of the rear of the case. When it is closed, only the external power connector and the rear IR port are available. The cover itself can be opened as a whole, giving access to the serial and parallel ports, VGA output and docking station connector, or partially – a sliding shutter opens only the dock connector.
At the bottom there is only one cover – a memory compartment, it hides a daughter board with two slots for FPM (VLB models) or EDO (PCI-based models) SO-DIMM modules. 8 or 16 megabytes of memory are soldered on the system board.
On the cover, in addition to the screen, there is only a slider for adjusting the brightness of the backlight. In versions with a passive matrix, a second slider is added – to adjust the contrast. On the reverse side are three LED indicators: battery status, power on and standby.
Very rich inner world
Slide the two latches on the sides of the case and open the laptop. Inside, there is still the same keyboard, famous for its convenience, with a large button travel, the usual red TrackPoint, so far with only two buttons, on the sides of which there are two speakers (it should be noted that the sound quality is very decent).
Above the keyboard is a volume slider and a separate LCD screen that displays the status of the computer. In addition to the standard disk / drive activity indicators, locks, it displays the status of both batteries (presence, charge / discharge), as well as the charge level in percent. When installing drivers – also the remaining time of operation or maintaining standby mode.
The keyboard is also not without its tricks: when you open the lid, it rises by 5.5 degrees, providing a comfortable tilt. If necessary, by lowering the levers near the display hinges, you can return the keyboard to a horizontal position. When you close the laptop, this will happen automatically.
Absolute modularity
If you move the latches that hold the lid away from you when the laptop is open, you can raise the keyboard panel and access the contents of the bento.
A motherboard is hidden under the metal casing (actually a whole board sandwich). CPU cooling is passive here. Before the “sandwich”, from left to right: UltraBay for removable drives, main battery and hard drive. The latter is made in the form of a cartridge with an original connector, but a regular IDE drive is hidden inside. In models without CD-ROM support, it is of standard thickness (at that time 12 mm, 9.5 mm became the standard later), in the rest it can be thicker – 19 mm.
Start key!
So, we move the switch, and the laptop starts. 56 megabytes of memory allows you to load OS / 2 Warp version 4, also known as the “half axis”, quite quickly. Working with it is very comfortable, all drivers are available, as the system was officially supported for this laptop. If you do not pay attention to compatibility with the latest office formats, there is everything you need for life, adjusted for 90s, of course: IBM Works office suite, Netscape browser, QuPlayer and other programs.
The battery is still alive and provides 2-3 hours of quiet work depending on the brightness of the screen. Working with a computer and on your knees is very convenient, despite the considerable weight by today’s standards.
The BIOS setup program is interesting (called by F1). A simple and convenient graphical interface has been implemented, animated cursors are used. But, unfortunately, most of the settings (and really needed ones) are available only from a special utility, versions of which are available for OS / 2 and Windows.
Sudden difficulties
In conclusion, I would like to note the very high strength of the computer and write other duty phrases. But you have to tell a little about the device of the computer. When the review was almost ready and it was time to arrange a photo session for the hero, a problem happened to him – the DSP responsible for the sound and the modem failed. This model uses an IBM M-Wave device on the ISA bus, which is not the best solution, as practice has shown – there were problems with drivers and reliability.
So I had to get to know the internals in more detail. Photos of the process, unfortunately, will not. I just want to note how unusual a computer is made by today’s standards. Under the casing there is not one motherboard, but a set of 5 mezzanine-type boards – a kind of sandwich. On top is a video card (it also has a connector for a keyboard and an external drive), under it is a power converter card, below is a DSP board (which had to be replaced).
All of them, overlapping each other, are stuck into the motherboard.
There is a CPU board under the motherboard (the processor itself is not a socket one, it is soldered on this board with part of the power system). Recall that the memory is also located on the daughter board. The result is a compact in depth (up to 7 cm), but rather thick construction. A similar solution was used in many early laptops, for example, in the Toshiba T4500C, but there the boards are connected by flexible cables, moreover, soldered to the boards.

So we got acquainted with another exhibit of the Digital Vintage collection. IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60 Notebook Review
Power and ease of use are characteristics that a quality laptop must have. Notebook IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60 meets these criteria, providing maximum comfort when working.
The black case has not changed much. Increased durability is achieved through the use of a lightweight magnesium chassis underpinning the notebook. A high degree of screen protection is ensured by the lid cover, made of special plastic and alloy.
The lid is attached to the body by means of powerful metal loops, which ensure that the elements are fixed in the desired position. A pair of latches securely holds the lid in place once it is closed.
The 14.1” screen with a 1024 x 768 XGA resolution (there is also a 15.1” screen with a 1400×1050 matrix resolution) performed well in testing. There is a matte anti-reflective coating. At the top is an LED that illuminates the keyboard. This opens up access to comfortable work in a dark room.
The lower part of the lid is provided with indicators in the form of icons.
The functionality of the keyboard, its design and comfort in work are the factors that make you choose the IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60.
The main difference from most laptop models is the seven rows of keys. The slightest deflection of the surface when pressed is completely absent. The convenient location of the arrow keys provides access to manipulation, excluding visual control.
The top of the keyboard has power, mute, and volume buttons. There is also a button for accessing utility utilities that operate on restoring or saving the system.
The layout of the keys themselves is almost flawless. The only difference from the standard is Fn instead of Ctrl in the lower left corner. It may take some time to get used to.
The indisputable advantage of the laptop IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60 is a Trackpoint. This is a small touch element located between the H, G and B keys, by touching which the user can move the cursor around the screen, avoiding the need to take their hands off the keyboard while typing. Under the Space key are two buttons related to Trackpoint, the functions of which are similar to those of the mouse buttons.
