Show seasonal allergies who’s boss

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, now is when they are at their worst. Stock up on allergy season’s most important products to keep your home, classroom, and office allergen-free. Start with an air purifier to strip the air of allergens like pollen and pet dander and replace existing air filters for improved air quality. Frequently dust, wipe down hard surfaces, and vacuum carpets and furniture to help eliminate pollen tracked in from outside and dander left behind by pets. When leaving the house, check the pollen count and bring a face mask to help filter the air you breath outside.

No matter what you do, it’s unlikely that the symptoms of seasonal allergies can be avoided entirely. Make sure to have over-the-counter cold and allergy medications on hand to battle symptoms, and stock up on facial tissues so you’ll always have one available when you need them.

Spring (Cleaning) is in the air

Spring cleaning and decluttering is a tradition meant to refresh our spaces for the year ahead. Staples has everything you need to clear out the clutter, store and organize your belongings, and all the right cleaning supplies.

Clear out the clutter

Start by preparing a checklist and make sure you have all the necessary supplies. Use storage bins and a label maker to make sorting and organizing easier. Prepare extra boxes for donations and trash bags for the things you no longer need. Look for decorative boxes & baskets that will compliment your home’s décor and use them to organize. You can also use closet organizers and storage drawers anywhere they are needed.

Start with the basics

An all-purpose cleaner, cleaning brush and microfiber cloths will clean most surfaces. Use a duster to remove unwanted dirt and furniture polish to revitalize wood surfaces. Upgrade your broom, dustpan, wet mop, and vacuum to make cleaning any type of flooring a breeze.

The nitty gritty

Spring cleaning doesn’t stop there. There’s so much you can do to reset your home:

  • Improve air quality and eliminate pollen and pet dander with a new air purifier and an air freshener with a scent you love.
  • On a sunny day, take the opportunity to clean your windows – you’ll need glass cleaner, a bucket, a squeegee, and paper towels.
  • Have a step stool or ladder on hand to access hard-to-reach places like the tops of cabinets and overhead lighting.
  • Replace broken light bulbs and check the batteries in your smoke detectors.
  • Use drain cleaner to clear up sink and bathtub drains.

There’s a wide range of inkjet printers, from expensive, full-featured models to simple budget options. There are many things to consider when shopping for the best printer for your needs, like how much you print, your budget, and whether you need other features, like a scanner or support for USB thumb drives.

The best inkjet printer we’ve tested is the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850, an all-in-one supertank model. It produces amazingly sharp documents, prints quickly at up to 25 pages per minute, and doesn’t need much maintenance since its ink tank yields thousands of prints. Plus, replacement ink is cheap, so your running costs will remain low even if you print a lot. Its wide connectivity options make it easily accessible, and its ADF-equipped scanner allows you to quickly process multi-page and double-sided documents. As for photo printing, printed pictures look detailed and colorful but a tad grainy.

If you find the ET-5850 too expensive and don’t mind compromising slightly, consider a cheaper variant, the Epson EcoTank ET-5800. It has the same features and provides the same print quality, but it’s a little slower to print color documents and doesn’t support borderless printing. Another alternative is the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5180. It yields more prints than the ET-5850 but doesn’t feel as well built and prints very slowly at 14 black or eight color pages per minute. It also has a smaller input tray, so you must refill it more often.

If you prefer to save money with a more modest mid-range model, go with the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e. It has Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet connectivity, and you can also print directly from a USB flash drive. The scanner has an automatic document feeder with single-pass duplex scanning, allowing you to quickly process multi-page and double-sided sheets. It also supports optical character recognition (OCR), which lets you scan documents into text files for quick keyword searches. Document printing quality is outstanding, and the printing speed is great at 16 black or 14 color pages per minute.

Unlike our pick above, this model uses traditional ink cartridges. It doesn’t yield as many prints, but it’s still pretty impressive at around 1100 black and 700 color pages. Plus, the ink cartridges are cheap. This model comes with six months of free ink through HP+, HP’s ink replenishment service, but know that if you subscribe to it, you can no longer use third-party cartridges, even after canceling your subscription. If you don’t care for the offer, you can get the older HP OfficeJet Pro 9025, though it may be harder to find.

For those with a large print load, consider the Epson EcoTank ET-3850 instead. It’s around the same price as the HP, but since it’s a supertank model, it yields significantly more prints, making it much cheaper to maintain. There are a couple of tradeoffs, though, like slower printing speeds and the lack of duplex scanning and external storage support. The print quality is also worse than the HP’s, but still great overall.

Our best mid-range inkjet pick is the Brother MFC-J4335DW, a simple all-in-one model designed for home use and one of the best all-in-one inkjet printers we’ve tested. It’s very cheap to maintain as its ink cartridges last a long time and are relatively inexpensive. Plus, it’s eligible for Brother’s ink subscription service, which might help save some cash. It produces high-quality documents, and while it doesn’t have the best color range and accuracy, it still produces very detailed photos that are good enough to hang at home. The scanner processes documents quickly through its automatic feeder and produces outstanding scans, making it great for digitizing photos. It doesn’t support duplex scanning, meaning you’ll have to flip the pages manually when scanning double-sided sheets.

The best budget inkjet printer we’ve tested is the Brother MFC-J1205W, also known as the Brother MFC-J1215W if you’re shopping at Walmart. It’s an inkjet model designed for people who print slightly more than the occasional once-in-a-blue-moon project. It has a sturdy build and a decent number of connectivity options, and it prints high-quality documents and decent-looking photos. Its ink cartridges last a long time and are relatively cheap, so the cost-per-print is exceptionally low.

It has a few compromises as a budget model, like its slow printing speed and the lack of an automatic document feeder. It’s compatible with Brother’s mobile app, which you can use to print, scan, copy, perform maintenance tasks, and order supplies.

If you only need to print once in a while for a specific project and need something to get the job done, consider the Canon PIXMA MG3620. It doesn’t feel particularly well-built and only has a basic flatbed scanner, but it prints good-quality documents and photos. The main drawback is its low page yield. The cost-per-print is still low because the cartridges are cheap; it’s just inconvenient because it requires a lot of maintenance, and you might end up wasting paper and time due to incomplete or faded prints. It’s fine if you only need it for those occasional, one-off projects, but if you print more regularly, consider going with our budget or mid-range pick.

While the other picks in this article are all great printers, they’re mainly designed for general purposes like everyday printing and scanning. If you’re looking specifically to print photos and want the best print quality, the Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-300 is your best bet. It produces incredibly detailed, vibrant, and colorful photos with no banding or other artifacts, and it can print on wide format paper sizes up to 13″ x 19″. Of course, there are some downsides to specialized printers like this one. The first has to do with maintenance cost, as there are nine ink cartridges to replace, and they’re expensive, so it can add up quickly if you print a lot. Second, it’s a print-only model, meaning you’ll need a separate scanner to scan anything. Last, it prints very slowly, taking over two minutes to produce a 4″ x 6″ photo.

If you print a lot and worry about high maintenance costs, get the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550, one of the best all-in-one inkjet printers we’ve tested. Its refillable ink tank yields significantly more prints than the Canon, and its replacement ink is much cheaper. It also has a flatbed scanner and can print directly off an SD card. The print quality is outstanding but is less color-accurate than the Canon because it tends to oversaturate the colors to make them more vibrant and punchy. If cost is a concern, there’s a cheaper variant, the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500. It gives you the same print quality but only supports paper sizes up to 8.5″ x 11″ and has a smaller 8.5″ x 11.7″ flatbed scanner.

If you need a wide-format printer to print posters, we recommend the Epson EcoTank ET-15000. It’s an all-in-one supertank model that yields thousands of pages, and you can replenish the tank as you go. Plus, the replacement ink bottles are relatively cheap, so your maintenance cost remains low even if you print a lot. It has USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet connectivity, and Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service support. It prints black-and-white documents decently fast but is a little slow with color documents. One thing to know is that while it has duplex printing capability, it doesn’t work when printing tabloid size. Printed photos look good, albeit slightly grainy and not very color-accurate.

                • Brother MFC-J1010DW:
The Brother MFC-J1010DW is a good alternative to the Canon PIXMA MG3620 if you need an automatic document feeder or faster printing speed. However, it’s more expensive and yields fewer color prints.

                • Canon PIXMA TR8620a:
The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is a more budget-friendly alternative to the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300. It can’t match the imagePROGRAF PRO-300 in print quality, but the photos still look very good, especially for a printer in its price range. It has more features, like a flatbed scanner and an SD card slot.

Choosing a color inkjet printer for the office

Which office printer model should you choose if you need color printing at the lowest cost?

How does Monday morning start in the office of a small company? With a cup of strong coffee and a leisurely conversation about the weekend? Maybe you are right. But for most successful managers, the morning begins with close communication with the printer – after all, you need to have time to prepare the accompanying materials for a planning meeting or presentation. And, while the black-and-white laser machine drives the text part, the color inkjet machine embodies graphs, diagrams and illustrations, without which no modern report can do. And then, as luck would have it, the cartridge ends, then the color rendition went wrong – and the employees commemorate the stinginess of the management, who did not want to purchase a color laser copier, with an unkind word …

But is inkjet technology to blame? Upon careful examination of the issue, it becomes obvious that most of the claims are unfounded. Indeed, color laser printing demonstrates a very high speed of obtaining a document, but this is important only for large volumes. Especially if you take into account the cost of the print and the resource of the cartridge. But with small print volumes, it turns out that saving 5-10 minutes on such operations turns into a very serious burden on the company’s budget. Therefore, the classic office combination of a high-performance black and white laser MFP and a color inkjet printer is still considered the most optimal solution for all document printing tasks. Unless, of course, we do not forget about other nuances of savings – although in a different aspect. So, often a “home” model is purchased for the office, which is subsequently charged with the cheapest consumables, which results in a decrease in speed and deterioration in print quality, premature wear of components and failure of the printer long before the end of the estimated service life.

But the “office” line of printers was not invented in vain: the resource of such devices is determined based on the volume of everyday work with increased load. The same goes for consumables: those who are concerned about the low capacity and high cost of cartridges are offered models equipped with a continuous ink supply system (CISS). Provided that the operating rules specified by the manufacturer are observed, they provide a low price for a copy and a long, flawless service of the device itself.

As for the common misconception that inkjet printing systems are low-quality, inefficient and unreliable, those who claim such a thing are probably unfamiliar with the simple Xerox Trivor 2400 Inkjet Press, capable of printing up to 2263 ppm – with roll, of course, paper feed. The working resource is up to 35 million A4 sheets monthly, and the quality, of course, is printing.

In a word, it is time to look objectively and draw conclusions. Let’s start, contrary to tradition, with the HP line. In our case, the HP Ink Tank 115 is almost ideal – an inkjet printer with built-in CISS, positioned for the needs of a small organization and optimized for everyday use. The optimal resource is from 400 to 800 pages per month (30-40 per day). Since the ink supply system is easy to control visually, it is not necessary to access the software utility to refill the containers in a timely manner. There is no need to call a representative of the service center for this: the special design of the branded non-spill bottle and filling system allows you to do everything cleanly and quickly by the employees themselves. However, frequent refilling is not required, because one filling is usually enough for six months (about 6,000 pages).

Some vendors do not see the point in releasing “just printers”, offering only multifunctional devices. However, for a small working group or a manager’s office, this is often more profitable: a full-color copier is interesting not only for those who work with graphics, but also for marketers and advertisers. Thus, the passport resource of the Brother DCP-T710W InkBenefit Plus MFP, equipped with a wireless interface and CISS, is up to 5,000 pages per refill. At the same time, the printing speed is quite high: up to 6 color prints per minute and 14 seconds before the first page is out. And built-in Wi-Fi allows you to not only connect multiple users, but also directly print documents from your mobile device.

But what if the load and speed requirements are much higher? The answer is simple: turn to Epson products. For example, the WorkForce Pro WF-C5290DW even looks unusual for an inkjet machine, and its parameters are appropriate: it gives the first color page in 6 seconds, the print speed is from 24 to 34 ppm, and the resource is up to 45,000 prints per month. Of course, it is equipped with a CISS, which, by the way, does not require refilling as such: the main feature of the model is replaceable high-capacity containers, thanks to which the total cost of ownership and the cost of a print are record low here. And one more thing: special Epson DURABrite Ultra ink is not afraid of external influences, does not penetrate paper fibers, does not crumble over time (like toner), does not fade and is recommended for printing archival documents.

Speaking of inkjet printers, it is impossible to ignore Canon products. For our review, the MAXIFY iB4140 is well suited, initially focused on “business needs”. This is evidenced by the speed (7 seconds on the first page, 15.5 color copies per minute), and the recommended load (up to 30,000 pages / month), and automatic two-sided printing, and much more. It is noteworthy that this model does not have a CISS, but is traditionally built on high-capacity cartridges (color outputs up to 1500 pages). According to the manufacturer, this approach provides cost-effective printing.

However, this does not mean that opponents of the CISS have gathered in Canon. For example, the PIXMA G1411 has built-in 3-color tanks and can print up to 7,000 pages out of the box at 5 ppm with duplex printing.

So, as you can see, inkjet printers do not lose to laser printers in terms of speed or resource, and even win in terms of the cost of a page in color. As for the range of capabilities and / or interface, it is useless to compare them: like scanning modules, they are identical for all types of devices. The connection is also the same – USB or network interfaces (wired and wireless) are available according to the specification. In a word, all the differences lie in the method of applying the pigment to paper – and here inkjet even outperforms laser printers due to the dye that is more resistant to external influences.

All this in combination allows us to assert that a correctly selected inkjet printer in terms of resource and print speed will save both the company’s money and the time of employees. This means that even on Monday before the planning meeting there is a minute for a cup of aromatic coffee.
