Tips on how to choose wireless headphones for sports

If you like to work out to music, then wireless headphones are the best for this: the wires do not interfere, and the phone can lie nearby and not dangle in your pocket. The problem is that you need to choose such a gadget correctly, and most people make mistakes when buying.

How sports headphones differ from others
Criteria for choosing sports headphones

How sports headphones differ from others

The main difference between sports headphones is that they can only be in-ear. It is very important. The fact is that primitive earbuds do not fit well in the ears, and during training they will constantly fall out. Overhead, or even more full-size models close the auricle, which means that your ears will constantly sweat.

Good wireless sports headphones are well-fitted in-ear models that fit securely in the ear canal, the shell is open, and they do not interfere with the athlete in any way.

Selection criteria for sports headphones

Active noise canceling . The ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) system suppresses the noise that surrounds the user using a special electronic processor. With active noise canceling headphones, ambient sounds are received by the built-in microphone and played out through the speakers in antiphase. When antiphase is applied to the main sound, both waves are destroyed, and only music remains. Sometimes this option is used without music to create complete silence.

Antiphase in sound – a sound wave that completely copies the amplitude of the main sound, but the tops become troughs, and the troughs become tops. Anti-phase can be compared to two bullets that have the same caliber and the same speed. If they collide in flight, their energy will be completely extinguished. The antiphase also has a similar effect.

The ANC system is not available in all models of sports headphones, but its presence is a significant plus for the gadget. For example, Sony WF-SP700N are neat little headphones in which external noise will not annoy you.

Version . Headphones may have a headband in the form of a plastic bow or wire. This is convenient because in case of accidental loss from the ear, the device will not be lost. The bow contains the battery, electronic circuitry and controls. For example, Atom S1 are good wireless headphones for sports, which are distinguished by their reliability. If two headphones are connected by a wire, then usually there are two cases on each side of it – in one remote control, in the other battery. A popular similar model is the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 305.

The inserts can be completely independent of each other. They do not interfere with training in any way, only if the gadget falls out of the ear, it can be lost. A worthy example is the JBL Under Armor Project Rock True Wireless Flash – the sound quality is very good.

Bluetooth version . The higher the version, the more reliable the wireless connection to the signal source. It is desirable that there be Bluetooth 5.0, as in JBL REFLECT FLOW – good wireless headphones for sports.

Ear pads. Silicone earplugs should securely fix devices in the athlete’s ears and prevent them from falling out – this is the main thing. They also protect the speaker from damage. Ear pads are made of hypoallergenic materials. Typically, manufacturers use silicone of varying degrees of density and thickness. Sometimes there are made of polyurethane foam or foam-silicone options.

Silicone ear pads are very durable and more hygienic than those made of foam. Music lovers claim that foam ear pads provide better sound, but earwax clogs in their pores, and after six months they wear out badly and need to be replaced. Silicone foams have a longer lifespan, but are still far inferior to traditional silicone ear cushions.

The main thing is the convenience and comfort of ear pads.

Battery capacity and charge rate . The duration of the device on a single charge depends on the capacity of the battery. It is better to choose headphones with a more capacious battery. In Samsung Galaxy Buds+, the battery has a capacity of 85 mAh, which allows the gadget to work continuously for 11 hours. The included ANC system accelerates battery drain. Also, the maximum volume level affects the performance of autonomy. Pay attention to the ratio of functional features to battery capacity. The more options and the power of the speakers, the more capacious the battery should be.

Pay attention to the battery charging speed. Most gadgets take about two hours to charge, but there are models that take less than one hour. It is better not to choose headphones with a very fast charge replenishment – such batteries fail faster.

Waterproof. Sweat is indispensable in sports, which means that headphones must have good protection against moisture. The IP class must be indicated on the packaging of the gadget – protection of the case from dust or water ingress into it. If the rating is IPX5, IPX7, or IP67, these devices can tolerate humidity normally. The higher the IP class, the more reliable the protection against water. The JBL REFLECT FLOW headphones are IPX7 rated and will be your faithful companion during grueling sports.

Sound quality. This is too individual item. One has only to say that good wireless headphones for sports should have a wide frequency range and signal detail. For example, JBL Endurance PEAK – reproduces the range from 16 Hz to 22 kHz. But we all treat sound differently. You need to choose based on genre preferences.

Microphone. All wireless headphones have a built-in microphone. With it, you can talk on the phone during sports, but it is important that it works properly on the move. When choosing a device, check how the microphone works with active movement – ideally, the interlocutor’s phone should not have “failures” in the dialogue.

Overview of the Honor Sport Pro wireless headset

At the end of October, the Honor brand introduced a new Sport Pro wireless headset in Russia (description on the manufacturer’s website), and its sales will officially start in mid-November. From the base model without the Pro set-top box, which has already gained considerable popularity, the new device is distinguished by a modern version of Bluetooth 5.0, a larger speaker, interesting charging features, not to mention the design and construction.

The arrival of a new sports headset from a well-known brand in a classic neckband format in the midst of the “victorious march” of TWS headphones, which are preferred by more and more athletes, is an interesting event in itself. However, this design has its clear advantages: for example, the ability to equip the device with a sufficiently capacious battery or place the microphone in a more favorable position for work – closer to the mouth, and not to the back of the head. Not to mention the fact that the presence of a fastener allows you not to worry about the fate of the headphones if they fall out of your ears during particularly intense workouts.

But Honor went even further and abandoned the in-ear headphones, which have almost become the unspoken standard for sports solutions, in favor of “earbuds” with an additional fastening inside the ear. And here, too, there are many advantages. To begin with, there are a number of people for whom in-ear headphones are not suitable – they do not hold well, cause discomfort, and so on.

But the main advantage is revealed when using the headset during sports. Forgive me for the anatomical details, but when wearing in-ear headphones, the body reacts with increased production of earwax – this is how it protects itself from the explosive growth of the bacterial population in a humid environment. At the same time, she has no exit from the ear canal. Most owners of in-ear headphones are familiar with this not the most pleasant effect.

During training, the space inside the ear canal is additionally moistened and warmed up – accordingly, the activity of this process increases even more. There are no such problems with the “inserts”, which is another reason to take a closer look at the Honor Sport Pro. This is what we will do.

Packing and contents

Honor Sport Pro comes in a white book box with a picture of the device and its brief description, some of the packaging elements have a gradient color – like the headset itself. Headphones inside are firmly fixed with a plastic lodgment.

The kit includes a headset, three pairs of silicone tips of different sizes (an Honor representative clarified that not three, but six pairs of tips will be supplied with the headset), a quick guide, a warranty card, and a USB-A (male) to USB-C (female) adapter for charging.

Design and construction

Headphones are available in three gradient colors: purple, gray and red. Thanks to the gradient, the device looks original and interesting. We got the purple version for testing. The neck part of the rim is extremely elastic and very pleasant to the touch due to the silicone coating.

Headphones are made of aluminum and covered with ABS plastic. As mentioned above, they are in the form of an “earbud”, and silicone tips are used to attach them in the ear. The openings of the sound guides are covered with a metal mesh.

The outer part with the bypass hole is finished in metal with polishing in a circle – this is not very noticeable in the photo, but it looks very impressive. Built into the back of each earcup are magnetic hooks that not only hold them together, but also enable automatic on/off using a Hall sensor.

The cable from the neckband to the headphones is protected by a dense nylon braid, but at the same time it is elastic and soft, easily takes any shape and does not “pull” the earphone out of the ear when worn.

The right side of the rim is detachable, the USB-C plug is hidden inside. There are three buttons on the front surface of this unit to control the device.

On the side you can see a microphone hole, on the inside there is a marking, suggesting that we have the right side of the headset.

On the other side there is a small charging and device status indicator, which is almost invisible when turned off. The indicator has two colors: red and white.

The battery is located on the left side of the rim. It does not contain any controls, on the front surface there is a logo, on the back – the letter “L” and the serial number of the device in extremely small print.

Connecting

Turn the headset on and off by pressing the center button for 1 second, a longer press for 4 seconds activates pairing mode. This process is as simple as possible: we find the device in the corresponding gadget menu, select and connect without entering a password.

Honor gadgets with EMUI 9.1 and newer support HiPair quick pairing, for which it is enough to connect the headphones to the gadget’s USB port. The opportunity is interesting, but even without it, everything happens simply and quickly.

Reconnecting a familiar device to a gadget takes very little time – about 3 seconds. In this case, this is especially important, since the headset turns off and breaks the connection every time the magnetic holders on the headphones touch. Accordingly, after their separation, reactivation occurs. During actual operation, you rarely notice this – usually by the time both headphones are in your ears, Honor Sport Pro is already completely ready for work.

There are no complaints about the quality of the connection between the headphones and the gadget: during the entire testing period there was not a single break or “stuttering” of sound, which even some of the tested premium segment headsets cannot boast of.

Operation

The device is controlled by a remote control on the right side of the rim containing three buttons. The central one traditionally has the most functions: it turns the device on and off, activates the pairing mode, controls the playback of the current track and answering the call. She also makes the transition from track to track – double-click scrolls forward, triple – back. The volume buttons are directly responsible for the volume, plus a long press on any of them calls the voice assistant. Also, the headset control involves magnetic headphone mounts, but we have already talked about this a little higher.

The manufacturer positions the headset as a sports headset, which is clearly hinted at by the word “Sport” in the title. In the presentations of the device, a wonderful wording was found in English: “exercise-oriented earphones” – literally translated as “exercise-oriented headphones”. Accordingly, we will talk about their operation in this vein.

The earbuds are IPX5 water-resistant so you can run in the rain without sweat. At the time of writing the review, the test sample has been in several training sessions, “walked” in the rain and sleet – no consequences.

The first thing to do is to choose the size of silicone tips for yourself, the comfort of using the headset and the nuances of its sound directly depend on this.

The headphones are additionally held in the ear by a small loop on the earpiece. Her pressure on the antihelix of the auricle is felt a little at first, but you quickly get used to it. The most reliable fastening is achieved when the silicone loop is placed as tightly as possible, slightly deforming to the shape of the bend. For all the time of the tests, including during active training, the headphones did not even try to fall out of the ears.

When jogging and running on the treadmill, the Honor Sport Pro performs just fine. Thanks to the good distribution of weight, it does not try to “fall” back, as many headsets with a rim do. Heavier front ends bounce a little, but this does not bring much discomfort. Silicone coating on the back provides a secure “grip” to the skin and prevents slipping. At the same time, it is tactilely pleasant enough, even if it comes into contact with a wet neck.

Without any problems, the headset also withstood the so-called “burpees” – a complex exercise consisting of squats, jumps and push-ups. The lower parts of the rim “bounce”, but the headset stays in place. At the same time, there is no fear that if the headphones do fall out, they will immediately end up on the floor – as happens with TWS headsets.

Exercises that require you to lie down on a flat bench are a little more complicated. The headset remains in place, but you need to get up carefully – if you do it abruptly, the rim can hang behind your back, holding on to the headphones remaining in your ears. And finally, when performing exercises on a bench with a negative slope – for example, twisting – you have to hold the headset rim with your hands. There is nothing terrible and surprising: you can’t argue with gravity.

There is only one microphone in the headset, it works quite well – the call quality can be assessed as “slightly above average”. The interlocutors hear everything, but sometimes they still complain that the voice sounds unnatural. However, there is a very important nuance here: the manufacturer claims a “anti-wind” design of the microphone, which helps to deal with wind noise. Plus, a certain algorithm is involved that processes the signal and reduces the overall noise level.

Indeed, with the Honor Sport Pro you can answer a call while jogging or cycling and just in a noisy environment – the interlocutor will hear everything. Of course, it is not worth talking for a long time in this mode. But it is quite possible to quickly solve a couple of issues.

Operating time and charging

The 120 mAh battery, according to the manufacturer, provides an impressive battery life: up to 18 hours of audio playback at medium volume, about 12 hours of talk time. In tests, when listening to music at a volume of about 70 percent of the maximum headset withstood without recharging up to 14 hours, which is also very, very good.

At the same time, 5 minutes of charging the device is enough for 4 hours of battery life. Sometimes it turns out a little less, but more than 3 hours – for sure. The headset is charged via a USB Type-C plug, you don’t even need to carry a cable with you: we find a device with the appropriate connector and off we go. Moreover, you can recharge the battery even from a smartphone if it supports OTG. We had four devices with USB-C at hand: two phones, a tablet and a laptop – the headphones were charged without problems from all of them. With the help of a complete adapter, you can also use the usual chargers with a USB port. In general, it is extremely difficult to stay without music from Honor Sport Pro.

Sound

The headphones use the AAC codec to transmit sound. On the one hand, the lack of AptX support in the device of a company that produces gadgets running Android is somewhat surprising. On the other hand, this solution is quite easy to explain. The presence of significant advantages of one of the codecs over the other is still an open question. At the same time, it is necessary to maintain compatibility with iOS devices – so without AAC it’s still nowhere. A license for AptX at the same time requires money. Here, “by the sum of factors”, it turns out that it is easier to stop at AAC as the main codec, but everyone has support for SBC.

Let’s just say about the sound delay in video and games: there is none. For several hours of streaming video and games, even minimal deviations were not noted. The manufacturer announces a particularly low latency level when the device works with gadgets on EMUI 9.1 and higher, we also tested it on gadgets with a different shell – absolutely no problems either.

The headphones are equipped with 13 mm drivers, which, according to the creators, should provide high-quality sound and pronounced bass, the presence of which is emphasized in the description of the headset. In general, bass is traditionally not the strongest side of the “earbuds” simply due to the design features. Especially if you compare them with in-ear headphones that “hammer” right into your ear.

And the Honor Sport Pro does have bass. It is voluminous, well-designed, but the attack is periodically lacking. But the low frequencies do not interfere with the “turn around” in the middle, the vocals are legible and distinct. Naturally, the tighter the earphones sit in the ear, the more pronounced the bass, which again brings us back to the importance of choosing the right silicone tips. Medium and mid-high frequencies sound very bright, sometimes on the verge of harshness, but this point is easily corrected by the equalizer. In general, the potential for “finishing” the sound with an equalizer in Honor Sport Pro is quite large – you can add a little more bass without distortion, further emphasize the middle, and so on.

Overall, the sound for mid-range sports in-ear headphones is very good.
