What to look for in a USB Wi-Fi Adapter?

2. 4GHz vs 5GHz: You’ll see these numbers a lot when looking at Wi-Fi devices, and 2.4GHz and 5GHz refer to the network standard your device uses. Basically, this refers to the connection’s speed and range.

The further you are from the signal source, the worse your connection will be, and the slower it will be. While 2.4GHz is older and slower than 5GHz, it can operate at longer ranges, making it better for basic internet usage, streaming, and more. 5GHz, on the other hand, gives you a much faster connection, at the cost of shorter range.

USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0: Like 2.4GHz and 5GHz, the most important difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 is speed. Unlike Wi-Fi network standards, however, USB 3.0 is always better. It’s a newer format, so not all machines support it, and if they do, you might only have one or two ports, and you may need to decide which of your devices gets to use them. Speeds on USB 2.0 cap out at 480Mbps, but USB 3.0 can reach 5Gbps, so we definitely recommend dedicating one USB 3. 0 port for your adapter.

802.11: Even if you have a USB 3.0 port, and an adapter that can use 5GHz bands, if you don’t have a router that can push those speeds, you’ll still be stuck with slow internet (a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link, it’s true). If your router uses 802.11g then it won’t go above 54MB/s. 802.11n is a bit faster, but most modern routers use 802.11ac standard, which is the one we typically recommend, because it has a higher speed ceiling.

Why do I need a USB connector on an Asus router?

Almost every manufacturer of Wi-Fi routers already has many models with USB connectors. There are routers with multiple connectors, and with USB 3.0. It seems to me that USB ports will soon be on even the cheapest, budget models.

Asus already has 1 or 2 USB connectors in almost every model. We will now try to find out why USB is needed on the router, and what can be connected there. Let’s talk specifically about Asus routers. I myself have an Asus RT-N18U router with two USB. Here is an example of him, and we will understand.

We are already used to the fact that you can connect anything to the USB connector on a computer: a USB flash drive, HDD, keyboard, mouse, etc. So, on a router, USB is needed for about the same tasks. It is clear that the keyboard or mouse does not need to be connected to the router. But a flash drive, an external hard drive, a printer, or a USB 3G modem can be connected to the router without problems. That’s what the USB connector is for. This applies to all manufacturers, not just Asus.

USB modems – Almost all Asus routers that have at least one USB support 3G / 4G modems. Everything is clear here, the router receives the Internet from the modem, and distributes it to your devices. If you do not have the opportunity to connect cable Internet, then this is very convenient. I already wrote a separate instruction for setting up a 3G USB modem on Asus routers.

Flash drives and external hard drives – Everything is very simple here. We connect the drive to the router, and all connected devices can access the files that are on the flash drive or disk. In addition, the router can not only organize access to files, but organize a DLNA media server, or an iTunes Server. And the AiDisk function can organize access to files from the Internet.

In addition, connecting USB drives to Asus routers is necessary for the Download Master to work. The router itself can download torrents, or files via regular direct links directly to the drive. In addition, he knows how to do it on schedule.

And Time Machine lets you set up backups for Apple computers.

Printers and scanners – connect the printer to the USB connector, set up the Print Server, and send documents for printing from any device connected to the router.

Perhaps you can still somehow use the USB port in the Asus router. I have listed all the methods that are already initially implemented in the firmware of the router, and dancing with a tambourine is not needed to configure them. For each function, the router has a special utility.

To find out if you can configure the functions that I wrote about above on your router, go to the router settings and go to the USB application tab. There will be a list of applications that I wrote about above.

I once saw a question, they say, is it possible to use a USB hub with an Asus router. The representative of the company replied that stable operation when connecting several devices to one USB connector is not guaranteed. I don’t think it will work at all. Most likely, in the control panel it will be possible to select a device from the list that will work. It’s a pity there is no USB hub, I can’t check it.

The presence of USB on the router is undoubtedly a big plus. A lot of possibilities open up. For example, I connected a 3G modem to Asus RT-N18U in one connector, through which the router receives the Internet, and connected a USB flash drive to the second USB 3.0 connector. And I often use downloading files through Download Master. I set up the router to download files at night, I set the task to download files or movies, and the router itself downloads them to a USB flash drive at night. In order not to load the already not very fast 3G Internet during the day. And thanks to file sharing on a flash drive, they can be accessed from a computer, and even a TV. No need to unplug the flash drive from the router.
