What does 8K mean?

An 8K TV is a TV that has a screen with 7,680 horizontal and 4,320 vertical pixels for a total of approximately 33 million pixels. The “K” in 8K stands for Kilo (1000), meaning a TV that has achieved a horizonal resolution of about 8,000 pixels.

8K TV is the highest resolution TV that has been released recently among UHD (ultra high definition) TVs. With four times more pixels than a 4K TV—another type of UHD resolution—8K TVs show a sharper and more detailed picture quality. This is because in 8K TVs pixels are so small they cannot be distinguished even from close up, making highly detailed images a reality.

So, how good are 8K TVs compared to traditional TVs? Let’s compare them to Full HD TVs and 4K UHD TVs to find out.

The resolution in 8K TVs is 4 times higher than that of 4K UHD TVs, and 16 times higher than Full HD TVs. Higher resolution means that there are more pixels that make up the screen. In other words, on the same size TVs, pixels are more densely packed within the same area which allows for a much more sophisticated and realistic image representation. This provides an overwhelming sense of immersion when you watch TV.

The term used to describe the number of pixels in a given area is called PPI (Pixels Per Inch), and naturally a higher PPI number means higher pixel density. Typically, PPI should be at least 50 or more in order to enjoy various kinds of video content. That being said, on a 75″ 8K TV the PPI is 117 while on a 4K TV and FHD TV it’s 59 PPI and 29 PPI respectively.

It has been found that the optimal distance for a TV is when it takes up 30 to 40 percent of your horizontal field of view. How to understand this in practice, I thought about how it can be represented, and here is my solution, stand in front of the door, take one step back, this will be the approximate distance when the object, in this case the door, will occupy 40 percent of the field of view. You can exclaim, but this is very close, yes it is, but here it is supposed to get the most positive effect from watching TV. On the other hand, no one bothers you to look from a greater distance.

First way to calculate TV viewing distance (for those using US or English measurements)

For those using feet, be aware that due to the numeric nature of the measurements, you only need to do the following. Take the size of your TV screen, move the comma one digit to the left, and take the resulting number as feet:

For a 65″ TV, the minimum viewing distance is 6. 5 feet.

To watch mixed content, you can calculate as follows: to the minimum TV viewing distance add, for example, half a whole number: =9 .5 ft.

So the viewing distance for a 65″ TV is 6.5-9.5 ft. Similarly, for a 75-inch TV.

The viewing distance of a 75″ monitor is 7.5 feet + 3.5=10 feet.

Second way to calculate TV viewing distance (for those using the metric system)

Multiply your TV screen size by 3 to get the minimum viewing distance, e.g. 65″ TV

65*3=195 , take this number in cm and move the comma two digits to the left to get meters; 1.95m is the minimum viewing distance for a 65″ TV. Distance for mixed content multiplied by 4 65*4=260 cm = 2.6 meters.

4k TV Viewing Distance

You should know that today the leading TV manufacturers have practically abandoned the production of TVs with a resolution of less than 4K. Only small TVs can ship with Full HD resolution. Therefore, the question of how far to watch a 4K TV is relevant for many. The viewing distance of a 4K TV is the same; as I said before, the TV should take up 40 percent of your field of view for the best effect.

TV viewing distance for gaming

You are using your TV as a gaming monitor. If you plan to use your TV as a gaming monitor, the recommended distance to the TV is the same as watching movies with maximum immersion in what is happening on the screen. But you can choose whatever distance you feel most comfortable with, and I’m not saying it will be a 40-degree field of view. TV resolution image quality and viewing distance

Although this is so beautifully written, you should be aware that when you watch a video shot at an initially low resolution on a TV, you will encounter a problem. These are films or TV shows of the analog video era, that is, old TV shows. Due to the lack of dpi, this video is fuzzy, and if you look closely, you can see the imperfections in the image. This is due to the low pixel density; in other words, the image quality is degraded and even a 4K resolution TV cannot process such an image with maximum quality. In this case, it is recommended to watch TV from a greater distance. For example, if you are watching a 50-inch TV from 5 feet (1.5 m), increase your viewing distance by another 2.5 feet (0.75 m) and watch from a distance of 7 feet (2.3 m). When you are further away from the screen, you will stop noticing individual details; the visual quality of the image will improve. To give you a real life example, when you look at a car up close, you see all the scratches or dirt on it, move some distance away from the car and it looks perfect to you. This is why an initially good video can only be viewed from a close distance, and if the image is bad, you need to increase the viewing distance.

You can watch 4K or Full HD video on a 4K or Full HD TV from the distance shown in the table above. From what distance to watch 4K TV

The value of this indicator depends on two main factors: the diagonal of the TV and the screen resolution. 4K displays 4 times more pixels than regular HD. This allows you to notice the smallest details at a closer distance. At the same time, it should be such that the feeling of comfort from viewing is not lost. In other words, you need to find both the ideal and convenient location for watching TV.

Experts for 4k devices recommend a distance based on 1. 2 -1.7 diagonal sizes. It is easy to calculate that for a 55-inch TV it will be 1.68 – 2.38 m. However, in order to take full advantage of 4K, the value must be less than 1.2 m. This is an inconvenient and unsafe distance for the user from a large bright screen . More correct for viewing a 4K TV with such a diagonal would be a distance of 1.5 – 2.2 m from the sofa or bed, which makes it possible to feel the comfort and advantageous opportunities of higher resolution.

Attention! To appreciate all the advantages of 4K at a distance of 2.5 m from the screen, the diagonal should be 80 inches.

How to calculate the distance depending on the diagonal

There is a rule that the distance between the eyes and the screen should be equal to the size of the screen diagonal, increased by 3-4 times. For example, with a diagonal of 65 inches or 1.65 m, the required value will be 4.95 – 6.6 m. As the distance from the screen increases, the required diagonal length that it must have increases.

Help! Plasma and LCD flat screens do not cause eyestrain from glare, so the distance to the screen can be reduced to 1.7 diagonal lengths.

The existing tables of recommended distances depending on the length of the diagonal do not take into account the factor that 2-3 people can watch TV at the same time, for whom viewing from a distance of 1.5 m even with a 60-inch screen will be uncomfortable due to an increase in viewing angle. Therefore, recommendations always face reality, which introduces its own nuances.

The tables help you choose your TV and install it according to the size of your room. Table data can always be adjusted for certain viewing conditions.

Beyond rule

According to this rule, two factors matter when choosing a diagonal size: resolution and distance from the screen. The main requirement is the need to make the TV a non-dominant object in the room.
