You’ll get bright, crisp colors and long battery life in some mini projectors, making them great whether you’re presenting in a conference room or enjoying movie night at a friend’s house.

One thing to consider as you shop for a projector is mobile connectivity. Some projectors connect up to your favorite smartphone or tablet to let you access your files or stream from your favorite apps. It’s important to look at compatibility if you’re choosing a projector to work with your existing mobile device, especially if you don’t have iOS or Android operating systems.

Then there are the mini projectors that don’t require you to connect to anything at all. These projectors have their own operating systems that let you access your own files and even use built-in apps. If you’re going to be streaming, you’ll need to make sure you can connect to wireless where you’ll be using it.

For audiophiles, sound is essential. Unfortunately, not all projectors come with good speakers, and you’ll probably find that applies to miniature projectors, as well. Some projectors come with great speakers built-in, which means you’ll get high-quality sound when you’re streaming or gaming. You can even use some projectors as a Bluetooth speaker to listen to your favorite music.

Power is also a consideration with miniature projectors. Despite being portable, some projectors don’t run on battery power, so you’ll have to consistently find somewhere to plug in your adaptor. Even those that do run on batteries have limited runtime, which is something you’ll have to consider every time you fire your projector up.

If you’re buying a projector for portability, chances are you want to be able to travel without the burden of extra equipment. With some mini projectors, you’ll be able to link up to a smartphone or tablet, which means you can conduct a presentation or show a movie directly from the device you have with you. Look for a projector that is compatible with iOS and Android devices, letting you grab documents, photos and videos from your phone.
With some mini projectors, you won’t even need the mobile device. Some projectors have Android built-in, which means you can plug in a USB drive or download apps through the projector itself. It some options even come preloaded with Amazon Video and Netflix. With these projectors, you won’t even have to install anything to start watching your favorite TV shows.
You’ll likely want to factor in size and weight when choosing a portable projector, especially if you’re hauling it around the country. Some of these mini projectors are impressively small and can weigh in at only 0.8 ounces.
You’ll probably see the term “lumens” when you’re researching projectors. They’re directly connected to the brightness and quality of the image you’ll get.
The best projector can depend heavily on what you’ll be using it to do. If you plan to use it in daylight for activities, like presentations in office conference rooms, focus on a projector that has clear and crisp text projection. For use in extremely dark rooms, though, you’ll probably find models focused on movie and video projection to be better.
To be truly portable, you’ll need your mini projector to be able to run on batteries. As convenient in size as many of these mini projectors are, they often will surprisingly require a power adaptor to run. For true portability, look for models with big batteries that will last as long as you need them to.

Vankyo 1080p Mini Wireless Leisure 530W Leisure Projector Review

One of the most attractive features of the Vankyo 1080p Mini Wireless Leisure 530W Projector is that it comes with a 100-inch screen. It’s already a bargain at $229.99, and even more when you add the included HDMI cable and three-year warranty, then drop the price down to $199.99 thanks to the $30 coupon Vankyo usually includes on its Amazon page. As you’d expect due to the low cost, Vankyo is cutting back on some features. But that doesn’t stop it from being an amazingly powerful projector at this price point.

Carefully crafted cut corners

The 530W has native resolution and a maximum resolution of 1080p. According to Vankyo, it’s built around a single 1920-by-1080-pixel LCD, color filters, and a white LED source much like a monitor. The combination means it can’t display rainbow artifacts, which is an advantage if those flashes bother you.

Most LED projectors in this price range, including the ViewSonic M1 mini and Kodak Luma 150, are handheld or handheld. The 530W is more of a scaled down version of more expensive tube designs and only weighs 4 pounds. With a size of 3.5 by 9.4 by 8.3 inches (HWD) it has more than enough space on the back for all the connectors you might need, including two full size HDMI ports. There’s also a USB-A port that can power a streaming card or read files from a USB stick.

One of the corners cut by Wankyo is the TF card slot, which can’t read microSD cards. Another reason is that the built-in file reader is a bit more awkward to use than usual for displaying photos from memory cards and USB sticks. It is best to connect to your Android or iOS phone or tablet via Wi-Fi for screen mirroring, which is also great for watching movies. I connected to a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and mirrored its Netflix app without difficulty.

The device I tested wouldn’t let me connect to my Wi-Fi router. Wankyo says this feature will be added in later versions. If you need this feature, please make sure it is included in the device you are ordering.

Physical installation is standard. Connect the power cord (no battery) and connect to an image source. Then point the projector at what you’re using as a screen, move it as needed to adjust the image size, and manually adjust the focus. A particularly nice touch is that the 530W – unlike many low-end projectors – makes it easy to focus. The large focus wheel moves smoothly, provides just the right amount of resistance for solid control, and changes focus only slightly with small adjustments.

Also in the category of pleasant surprises, the built-in sound is much better than typical for such a small projector, especially considering its 3-watt speaker. In my tests, the 530W was loud enough for a small to medium-sized family room, and the quality was sufficient, if not outstanding. There is also a 3.5mm stereo audio output for connecting to a sound system.

One reason to amplify the sound with an external speaker is that the projector’s fan noise is unusually high. I’m not particularly sensitive to fan noise, and it still annoys me.

The complete screen is considered a bonus, but it’s also one of those places where Wankyo cuts corners. It consists only of material, with metal bushings along the reinforced edges. You should hang it the same way you would a sheet. In addition, a 100″ diagonal size is a bit optimistic for a material with a gain of 1.0. Even in a dark room, it’s more than what the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends for projector brightness. (More on brightness in a moment.)

I measured input lag at 44.5ms. It’s fine for casual gaming, but there are many better gaming projectors out there.

Skip default settings

Of course, the most important thing is how good the image looks. The 530W gives mixed results on this score depending on whether you stay at the default settings or change them. The menu offers three preset color modes: Soft, Standard and Vivid. They were all slightly green-shifted in my tests, colors looked a bit washed out even at smaller image sizes than you’d probably want to use, and none of them let you change any settings other than color temperature. Luckily, there’s also a custom mode with a few more settings available.

Custom mode adds settings for brightness, color (which controls saturation), contrast, and sharpness. I was able to eliminate most of the green bias by adjusting the red and blue settings. I also adjusted the brightness and contrast, and lowered the sharpness level as the default level was high enough to give the image a grainy look while highlighting the otherwise subtle digital noise.

After these adjustments, some colors were still not washed out enough to be seen, but the grainy feeling was gone, contrast and shadow detail were more than acceptable even in difficult dark scenes, and color accuracy was good enough for most people to consider acceptable for casual browsing.

Vankyo rates the 530W at 290 ANSI lumens. This is small compared to the claims for some directly competing projectors, but these claims are usually exaggerated, sometimes by an order of magnitude. The 530W turned out to be just as bright as I expected from the rating. In a dark room, using my 1.0 gain screen, I selected a 72″ wide view image, which is within the range recommended by SMPTE for 290 lumens. In low to moderate ambient light, I got a 51-inch image that was also viewable in the family room, even in brighter light on an overcast day. The 530W is also suitable for outdoor use, and the low price and screen included make it a good choice if you’re throwing a cheap backyard movie night.

Good choice on a budget

The Vankyo 1080p 530W Wireless Mini Leisure Projector misses a few potentially important tricks. If you want a projector that delivers the best image quality right out of the box, be sure to check out the Miroir Synq M189, which can also power a streaming flash drive. If you want built-in streaming, consider the Kodak Luma 350. If your budget is really tight, check out the ViewSonic M1 mini. But if you’re building a basement or backyard projection setup for the first time and want a simple, inexpensive projector and screen combo, the 530W kit is more than a solid choice.
