13 Floor Vacuuming Tips – 2023
There are several useful and easy cleaning solutions to rid your home of dust, germs and microscopic mites. While surface disinfection and clutter cleaning help, today we will focus on how to keep floors clean with a vacuum cleaner.
The vacuum cleaner is one of the most valuable tools for keeping floors clean. There are many different types of vacuum cleaners on the market, each with its own pros and cons. For the purposes of this article, we will assume that you have already decided on the choice of a vacuum cleaner, and will immediately move on to tips on how to use it like a pro.
Contents
Toggle
1. Keep it simple
The first tip for vacuuming is probably the most obvious one: keep it simple. You’d be surprised how many people unintentionally create extra clutter that makes vacuuming more difficult than it needs to be.
For example, if you allow shoes to be worn around the house, you are more likely to bring dirt, leaves, and other foreign objects into the house. This will complicate the cleaning process. The obvious solution is to ask everyone to take off their shoes in a designated area. This will help keep potential debris in place rather than scattering it all over the house. Special rugs for the hallway will come to the rescue. This way, your friends and family members will have somewhere to dry their shoes.
2. Once is not enough
To really remove dust and hair on the floor, it is usually best to vacuum the same spot several times. In addition, it is not superfluous to vacuum from different sides, as this will help to more effectively collect dirt and debris.
Especially for places where the vacuum cleaner is not working.
This is especially important for problematic pet hair. Ask any pet owner and they will tell you how difficult it can be to completely remove all hair from carpet and furniture. In difficult situations, you may have to walk the area up to 10 times.
But even if you don’t have pets, it still makes sense to walk on the carpet several times from different sides. I personally create a cross pattern when I vacuum the carpets in my home.
3. Set a schedule
Another important cleaning tip is to set a schedule. Whether you choose a specific day of the week or month, following a regular schedule and sticking to it will help keep your floors clean all the time.
In most homes, vacuuming once a week or two is sufficient. However, in high traffic areas, additional attention may be required. If you have pets that shed, you should probably vacuum more than once a week. Or maybe you have kids who blindly scatter crumbs all over the house. I try to vacuum the floors every weekend, especially where they play.
4.
Changing the bag/emptying the container
Another obvious tip for vacuuming is to change the bag and/or empty the container regularly.
It will be difficult for you to effectively vacuum the floors if the bag or container is already full. Regardless of whether you have a bagged or bagless vacuum cleaner, you should keep an eye on how full it is. If it ends up being too full, you won’t be able to clean the floor, and in some cases, you can make an even bigger mess as the dirt won’t be able to get into the vacuum cleaner like it should.
5. Stain treatment
Vacuums are not stain removers. If you spill something on your carpet, you need to treat it immediately to minimize the chance of a permanent stain. If you notice stains on your carpet while vacuuming, it’s best to treat them with a stain remover before you finish cleaning. This will keep the carpet in the best condition and improve the results of your cleaning efforts.
Also, if you notice stains, new or old, you should use a steam cleaner to remove some of them. Spotting is your best bet, but using steam on these stains is another tool that will help you keep your carpets clean and beautiful.
6. Remove small objects from the floor
I’m not sure if this is vacuuming advice at all or just common sense… But despite the obviousness of this advice, I still feel obliged to add it to the list in case anyone has any doubts.
Before vacuuming the floor, be sure to pick up all the mess and remove small items from the floor. This will not only make it easier to clean the floor, but also prevent small items from getting stuck in the vacuum cleaner. If they get stuck, you may ruin the cleaner or break some internal part. Not only will this lead to more serious problems, but it will prevent you from actually removing all the dirt and dust.
7. Move furniture occasionally
Large items such as furniture can usually be left in place while you vacuum. After all, it doesn’t make sense to move all the items around the house every week to ensure it’s clean enough. While this will help keep the house clean, it is not a viable solution for most people.
However, in most cases the vacuum cleaner can be left in place.
But in some cases, you can move a sofa or coffee table to vacuum hard-to-reach places in high-traffic areas. If you can’t move these large pieces of furniture, try using one of the attachments that came with your vacuum cleaner to suck up any accumulated dust or debris.
8. Choose the right setting
One tip that will help many people vacuum their floors more efficiently is to make sure you choose the right setting for your machine. Many vacuum cleaners have various options that allow you to adjust them depending on the surface you are cleaning.
If you have a shaggy carpet, you will need a different setting than when cleaning parquet. Vacuum cleaner settings should be adjusted depending on the height of the surface you are cleaning. By adjusting the height, you will ensure the best suction and, ultimately, a more efficient cleaning of the floors.
Remember that the vacuum cleaner needs to be more efficient.
Do not forget that the height of the floors in your home may be different. If you have different types of flooring in your home, you should change the settings on your vacuum cleaner. Whether it’s carpet or tile, just make sure you get the best suction.
9. Deep cleaning is useful
Even at home where vacuuming is done regularly, deep cleaning is sometimes useful. This includes a thorough cleansing with steam or shampoo…or maybe both.
Deep carpet cleaning will loosen and remove the dirt that has accumulated in the carpet fibers. After deep cleaning your carpet, you will most likely notice that it is easier to vacuum. This is because the floor is cleaner and the sucked dirt has not yet had time to eat into the fibers of the carpet. Also, after deep cleaning your carpet, you should strongly recommend regular vacuuming.
Another tip: Before you shampoo your carpets, whether you do it yourself or hire a company, make sure you vacuum up as much dirt as possible. The more dirt and dust you can remove with a vacuum cleaner to steaming or shampooing, the cleaner your carpets will be in the end.
10. Focus on hard-to-clean areas
Some areas of the house are more difficult to vacuum. These include, for example, a pantry or stairs. While it may be tempting to quickly remove these areas, it is often better to spend more time on them, especially if these hard-to-reach areas have a lot of traffic.
When you’re vacuuming in hard to reach areas, you need to give them more time.
When vacuuming stairs, it is recommended that you use the vacuum attachments. Not only will this help you clean the many crevices and edges of the carpet, but it will save you the hassle of carrying a heavy device and rolling it up every step. These attachments can even provide deeper cleaning, as many of them are designed for cleaning furniture, stairs, and other hard-to-clean surfaces.
11. Don’t turn it off when you leave the room
This cleaning tip only really works if you have a HEPA vacuum cleaner. HEPA vacuum cleaners are especially effective at removing allergens and dust in the air as well as on the floor. One little-known tip that will help you freshen up a room in your home is to leave your HEPA vacuum cleaner running for a few extra minutes. Make sure the hose is off and don’t forget it. When you return, the room will look, smell, and feel cleaner.
Note: This tip is helpful, but if you really want to get rid of airborne particles and improve indoor air quality, you should consider purchasing an air purifier for your home. This will be much more efficient than leaving the vacuum cleaner on. Not to mention it’s much quieter.
12. Dust all surfaces first
When cleaning, it is wise to dust blinds, skirting boards and higher objects to before you start vacuuming the floors. This is due to the fact that by wiping the dust, you raise the dust that has settled on numerous surfaces. Dust that you could not collect with a rag or dust bag will eventually settle back, and most of it will settle on the floor.
At this time you start vacuuming. You will not only collect the settled dust, but also help to remove the dirt that is already on the carpet. If you vacuum before dusting, you may need to vacuum the floor again when the dust settles.
13. Carpets require special attention
When vacuuming carpets on your floor, be sure to pay attention to how the appliance interacts with the carpet itself. Sometimes the vacuum cleaner can get stuck on the outer edges of the carpet and cause abrasion. It depends on the model, but we have heard of such cases. When you’re vacuuming carpets, it’s best to focus on cleaning the center and go over the outer parts lightly. Also, make sure you are using the correct setting for the carpet you are vacuuming.
These 13 vacuuming tips will make cleaning your floors easy and fun. If you stick to a regular schedule and make vacuuming a priority, your home will be rid of troublesome dust and debris. Also, remember that a vacuum cleaner is a great tool not only for keeping your home clean, but also for extending the life of your floors and maintaining healthy indoor air.
Steam mop or vacuum cleaner: which is better?
What is a steam mop?
It looks like a classic mop, but its functionality is ahead of it: the steam mop can be used to clean, steam and disinfect things.
How it works.
Steam generator and water tank installed in the housing. To get out, you need to connect to the mains. Steam is supplied under pressure through holes in the soleplate. The microfiber pad can absorb moisture and remove stains, but will not pick up debris. Sweep or vacuum the floor before starting work.
What parameters should I pay attention to when choosing?
Power
Most have a power of 1200-1700 watts. The higher the number, the faster the mop will heat the water to produce steam and be ready to go. With a power of 1500 W, the ready time is less than 30 seconds, like the BISSELL 2234N.
Steam power
The parameter reflects how much liquid the device can dispense in 1 minute. The volume can reach 50 g/min. The stronger the flow, the easier it will be to deal with the dirt.
Tank size
It can be 0.35-0.5 liters. The larger the tank, the less often you need to top up. In this case, the consumption depends on the intensity of steaming. The disadvantage of steam mops with a large boiler is the increased weight and large dimensions.
Continuous run time
The parameter depends on the volume of the water tank and the power of the steam flow. The duration of washing without stopping can reach 10-45 minutes. Devices with a small autonomy are suitable for small apartments. If you have a spacious room, you should choose a mop with a continuous wash time of 20 minutes or more.
Accessories
To make mopping more convenient, the scope of supply includes:
- window and mirror scraper;
- cone for removing dirt in small areas and in difficult places;
- metal brush, with which you can get rid of stubborn, old stains;
- tools for steaming fabrics, cleaning carpets or upholstered furniture.
Plug-in design
Some have the ability to detach the handle. The mop becomes a compact handheld steam cleaner with a separate steam button.
Weight
Weight can reach 4 kg and even more. If using the device you are going to clean the tiles on the walls, mirrors and steam the curtains, then it is better to buy a model with the smallest weight.
Cable length
Different models have a cord length of 5-9 m. The larger the cable, the more convenient it will be to clean up and not change the socket for connection.
How to choose a steam mop ?
- First of all, evaluate the area on which you have to work. If you have a small apartment, then a version that can operate continuously for 10-15 minutes is suitable for it. For example, BISSELL 2234N delivers steam continuously for up to 15 minutes.
- If you are planning on cleaning sanitary ware and wall tiles, choose options with a detachable hand unit.
The same BISSELL 2234N Powerfresh Slim is ideal for this.
- If there is a need for a quick start, see modifications with a minimum preparation time. To do this, look at the power of the steam mop.
- To use the equipment safely, choose a model with an auto-off system. It will not allow the unit to be used with an empty boiler.
- If you need a mop exclusively for the floor, then look for products with a maximum tank volume and cable length.
- When cleaning laminate (or other similar surfaces) high steam pressure is not required. Enough and 25-30 g / min. For tiles, a flow of about 50 g / min is needed.
The main advantages and disadvantages of the steam mop:

Pre-debris required, sweeping |

No household chemicals required |

Uses little power |
The collection of the American brand BISSELL includes one steam model.
The BISSELL 2234N Powerfresh Slim mop is the first vertical mop with a removable control module and nimble, interchangeable nozzles included. Quickly transforms into a handheld steam cleaner for hard-to-reach areas, from flooring to plumbing, windows and kitchens. It is convenient to store it in a closet, laundry room or dressing room due to its small dimensions and wall mounting.
What is a washing vacuum cleaner?
This is an advanced wet vacuum cleaner. They are indispensable for allergy sufferers, families with children and anyone who loves perfect cleanliness in the house.
How it works
The special feature is that it does not contain a dust bag or container. Instead, there are two containers:
- Clean water tank. For more effective cleaning of especially complex contaminants and disinfection, special agents are added to the container.
- Waste dirty fluid tank. After processing the right place, the dirty mixture enters this compartment through a rod or hose, from where it is then easily removed manually.
The supply is through a small capillary hose that runs from the handle to the working area. In vertical models, the role of the hose is performed by the rod. During the washing process, the liquid is sprayed over the surface to be cleaned through a special brush. Also, a nozzle is installed at the bottom, through which the waste liquid already with dirt is sucked back.
The working containers are located inside the body of the device. They are:
- horizontal;
- vertical;
- tank inside tank.
Equipment from a higher price category is equipped with a coarse filter. It allows you to collect large, solid debris.
What parameters should I pay attention to when choosing?
Suction power
The more powerful the device, the higher the cleaning quality. The optimal indicator is at least 200-400 watts.
Tank size
Determined by the area of the apartment. To process an apartment of 30-50 m², a vacuum cleaner with a tank of 2-3 liters is enough, and for a private house it is worth choosing with a volume of 3-4 liters.
Type and number of nozzles
All of them are equipped with devices for wet and dry cleaning of premises. The set includes universal and small crevice brushes, rollers for cleaning smooth floors, home textiles, etc.
Filter system
The devices are equipped with aqua filters and fine filters (HEPA). Before buying, pay attention to the number and types of installed filters.
Options
Many have several operating modes with adjustable water flow. Some can remove tough stains, as well as clean with steam or hot water.
How to choose a good vacuum cleaner ?
- Look for an option with two tanks – one for clean water and one for dirty water. This is how the BISSELL CrossWave Coldless Max cordless upright vacuum cleaner works.
There are two reservoirs in it: you pour clean water into one compartment, you walk the floor with a vacuum cleaner, and all the dirt is drawn into another container.
- If you have to mop your floor every day, then the vertical cordless unit is the right choice. He does not have a hose and wires that get tangled underfoot. And they are light in weight. Wireless BISSELL 2765N weighs 5 kg. You can quickly get it out of the corner and collect rice that has scattered around the kitchen.
- See how long it holds a charge. Wireless options from BISSELL charge for 3 hours, and clean without interruption for up to 30 minutes. This is enough to wash a three-room apartment of 100 m².
- Usually comes with a set of different brushes that need to be changed depending on the type of coverage. But in CrossWave Cordless Max, everything is more convenient – there is a brush roller with an elongated pile that effectively cleans both carpets and hard surfaces.
- Look for appliances that have a self-cleaning feature. At BISSELL, the roller can clean itself.
- The kit comes with a special stand, in which, after cleaning, you need to pour a little cleaning agent and put the vacuum cleaner. The roller will spin, and all the dirt from it will go into this special reservoir. It remains to pull out the roller and dry it – everything is simple.

- Cleans, washes and dries coatings at the same time.
- Up to 30 minutes per battery charge.
- Able to clean a room up to 100 m2.
- Even at high power emits a lower noise level – no more than 75 dB.
- Equipped with a long bristle brush that cleans not only hard floors but also carpets more effectively.
- Cleans corners and skirting boards 60% more efficiently thanks to the unique brush structure of the vacuum cleaner.
What is the difference between a steam cleaner and a vacuum cleaner
To make it easier for you to choose the right appliance, you should understand the main differences between these two types of appliances:
- Both appliances have a water tank. And both let it out, but the purifier does it in the form of hot steam. But the vacuum cleaner draws everything together with the dirt back, but the steam mop does not.
- If you need to not only wash the floor, but also remove small debris or wool from it, then only a vacuum cleaner will help to cope with the problem, which will clean and draw the dirt into itself.
- A hand-held appliance such as the 2635J Steamshot will help you iron clothes or clean kitchen surfaces, window sill flowers, glass, bathroom tiles, etc.
- For soft surfaces such as carpet pile, a vacuum cleaner is required. It can wash and pull out all the dirt between the villi.

Which unit is better to choose
To answer this question, select the main tasks that the device must solve, and only then proceed to the selection.
When there may be pets in the room, or there is a lot of upholstered furniture or carpets, it would be better to buy a vacuum cleaner, such as the CrossWave Cordless Max.
If you have allergies, asthmatics, small children at home, then choosing a steam cleaner will be a more profitable option. With the help of a steam mop, you can easily wash and disinfect any hard-to-reach places, eliminate unpleasant odors.
If you need to combine the qualities of both devices, then you should pay attention to a steam cleaner, for example 1977N Vac&Steam. With it, you get the advantages of both devices at once, but it cannot replace both of them by 100%.
