Video camera as a detector of fire and smoke
Category “Fire safety” | To the list of rubrics | To the list of authors | To the list of publications
While the whole world is at a loss what video analytics is 1 and how to use it, new opportunities appear on the market for applying the minds of mathematicians and programmers – smoke and fire detection technologies. Moreover, unlike the abstract application of what is currently called video analytics, here the application is very, very specific, and it is even possible to calculate the economic effect.
I.V. Oleinik
CEO of DSSL
Let’s agree right away that we will put this type of analytics into a separate class. In addition, we will understand that we are talking about new software and even (already!) technology, and it is impossible to demand from them 100% performance of all tasks in this segment until years of testing have passed, this equipment appears on real objects and it will be adopted by both the relevant services and ordinary installers.
Why are there not enough fire detectors
So, actually, what is our problem? No fire detectors? On the contrary, there are a huge number of smoke and heat transmitters on the market that can satisfy even the most biased fire inspector. Then why worry? Pessimists and conservatives will say that the developers of video surveillance systems simply want to either increase the value of their loved ones even more, or “rip off” more money from a naive buyer. But let’s get to the facts.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration (FEMA), although the number of fires in commercial premises has recently decreased to 3% per year (but the death rate, by the way, has risen to 8.5% per year), this number is in the hundreds of thousands and losses in the hundreds of millions of US dollars. The most interesting thing is that, despite the relatively high percentage of buildings equipped with automatic fire extinguishing systems (up to 60% in educational institutions), they do not work in 8% of cases. Let’s think: what was there where there was no such system at all? The percentage of equipping warehouses, office knowledge with fire extinguishing systems does not exceed 20%, and some classes of premises (such as garages) are generally close to zero. In 2000, more than 70% of such buildings were not equipped with fire safety systems at all.
They have it, but what about us? In 2008, there were 200,000 fires (in total!), killing 15,000 people, including 500 children.
Opportunities and tasks of fire-fighting video analytics
Well, what does video analytics and video cameras have to do with it? And despite the fact that for quite a long time there have been developments that make it possible to detect a fire or smoke from an image obtained from conventional CCTV cameras. Moreover, IP video cameras with such built-in analytics have already been released.
Actually, a video camera with a built-in detector or a DVR detector can, under certain conditions, detect the presence of a fire. Let’s say, in a protected room where there should be no movement, a fire will trigger the motion detector. Under even more specific conditions, for example, in systems having a slow motion detector, it is also possible to detect smoke. But all this very much depends on the conditions, the color of the smoke, the background, the absence of other activity.
What can modern fire safety analytics do?
Let’s start with a task. In addition to the obvious one – fire danger detection, the primary task of a video surveillance system equipped with such analytics is to reduce the reaction time from the moment of ignition to a fire alarm. As mentioned above, new features do not give a 100% guarantee, but classic systems are also not ideal: 8% of systems that did not work – this is almost in every tenth case! However, speaking of fire safety based on video surveillance, we are by no means now talking about its use as the only system that detects a fire. We will talk about increasing the level of security, about adding to a typical system built on smoke or other detectors. Turning to GOSTs and tests of fire detectors, we find that the response time “from below” (that is, the minimum) starts from 15 seconds (according to tests by System Sensor for the simplest – optical – smoke detector) and ends “from above” at 840 seconds, according to GOST R 50898–96 to detect, for example, smoldering wood. Total from 1/4 minute to more than ten minutes.
Our own tests show that the detection time (both smoke and open flame) at the 15th second usually “ends”, that is, it is the maximum, and the operation of a typical optical detector (type IPD-3.1 M or DIP-34) can be do not wait at all, especially if your room is large enough and there is a draft in it. Your security guard, having received a notification from the video surveillance system, will have time to go for a fire extinguisher, put out the fire, and then he will be deafened by the fire alarm siren.
When detecting an open fire, the use of smoke detectors is generally useless. The video camera, due to the fact that it has a wide viewing angle, covering primarily the floor, walls and equipment, stored goods, will detect both fire and smoke just faster, which will make it possible to save more valuables (life, perhaps, too, although we are more for use in protected areas where there are few or no people). So, the task of video analytics, more precisely, a video surveillance system with fire analytics, is to reduce the time of fire detection and duplication of fire alarm functions.
If someone still has a question: why duplicate the fire safety system, then I have a counter question for you: how much do you value protected property? Even if you insured it, will your customers be satisfied if they don’t receive the goods on time? Are you sure that the insurance company will pay everything? More questions? The answers are right here:
Your security level
Everyone pays for the level of security they want. Here is an example from our fire safety topic today. If you want to know that your property has already burned down, you will put in the cheapest spot heat emitter. If you are a “careful owner” – install optical smoke detectors, that is, fulfill the minimum requirements for administrative and amenity premises. If you do not want your employees or you yourself to suffocate in smoke, install a smoke exhaust system. If you want property and people not to suffer, install an automatic fire extinguisher. For each level you will have to pay more, often by an order of magnitude, but you yourself have chosen your level of security and received the corresponding result. Speaking of a full-fledged security system, we mean not only fire, but also integrated security in general. The integration of fire, burglar alarms, access control systems, video surveillance and automation systems gives the maximum synergy effect for your high level of security.
Security available today
Do we have to wait for fire video analytics to become standard or adopted?
Strange question! Or maybe you should start protecting yourself, people and property now? Fire analytics systems already exist and have a fairly high percentage of reliability 2 .
Let’s start with the software itself, as the market for video surveillance systems is still 90% (by the number of cameras sold) occupied by analog cameras. Systems “analogue cameras + PC recorders” occupy up to 30% of the market in financial terms. They are multifunctional, flexible in application, easily scalable, of course, easily integrated, and most importantly, fire video analytics software modules can be used here. Like any analytics, fire detectors are resource-demanding, therefore, in particular, only one product integrated into an IP video camera is known so far. This is due precisely to the resources of the built-in processors, but this situation is temporary, and with the release of more powerful and at the same time economical DSP processors, we will have more and more opportunities to shift all the work to the video camera.

1 The definition used by our company. Video analytics are video surveillance system tools that allow you to operate video and other data faster and better. Video analytics can be divided into online (what helps us right now, at the moment of action on the screen) and offline (what helps us find data faster and better in any amount of storage). Actually, the definition applies to both online and offline analytics.
2 Like any detector or detector, fire detectors have two types of problems. They can give false alarms – when used in the continuous monitoring mode (movement of people in the frame, etc.), you can get up to 1 false alarm per day. When used in security mode (when movement is not expected in the protected area, the lighting is stable) – from 1 week to several months. On the other hand, the probability of missing an event. It is an order of magnitude lower than that of other means in detecting fire, and such an advantage is less clear in detecting smoke.
