Detailed review of Galaxy SmartTag. The first Bluetooth tag from Samsung!

Rating of this article according to readers:

4.8

(86)

While the entire Internet has been discussing rumors about the appearance of a new accessory from Apple – AirTag tags for the last year and a half, Samsung has already started selling a similar device called Galaxy SmartTag .

In general, Bluetooth tags are nothing new. There are many similar devices on the market, but this is the first experience for Samsung. And there really is something to talk about.

When I first heard about the Galaxy SmartTag and that, and I quote: “these tags can be attached to keys, bags and even to pets”, I immediately decided to purchase such a gadget for my dog so that it can be easily find her just in case. After all, even on the box with the device a dog is depicted:

As it turned out, in reality everything is somewhat more complicated, but let’s sort it out in order.

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag review. What is it, how does it work and why is it needed?

Bluetooth tag is designed for quick and easy search of lost items. The principle of its operation is very simple – you attach a tag to a bag, keys or wallet, after which you can see their location on your smartphone.

A very important point lies in the very name of these devices. Such tags are connected to the smartphone exclusively via Bluetooth. Accordingly, you can only find a lost item if it is or was within Bluetooth range. And this radius depends on a number of factors: the presence of physical barriers and their number, the purity of the air and the version of Bluetooth.

Since the Galaxy SmartTag works according to the Bluetooth 5.0 protocol, the range (in theory) in open space is 200 meters . In real life, you can count on 100-150 meters. Indoors, this number should be safely divided by 4.

But the main thing to remember is that this device does not support GPS , so if your dog runs away, it will be possible to find it using SmartTag only if it is next to it will be other users of Samsung smartphones who have installed a proprietary service SmartThings Find .

The device itself is small, although, to be honest, I expected it to be more compact:

Galaxy SmartTag next to the AA battery

The tag is made of matte plastic, there is a hole for fastening at the top. There are no straps or key rings included. Actually, there is nothing in the kit except SmartTag.

The charger is not provided here as there is no battery inside the SmartTag. Instead, it uses the most common coin cell battery CR2032 , which is often found in scales, bike computers and many other devices:

To replace it, just open the SmartTag by lifting the cover with a fingernail or a coin:

One battery should last approximately for 300 days of continuous operation of the device. In the Samsung SmartThings application, you can see the approximate remaining charge:

The body of the tag is not sealed, so there is no moisture protection here. On the front side there is a large round mechanical button with the inscription Galaxy SmartTag :

Inside the device there is a simple speaker (mono tweeter).

How to connect Samsung Galaxy SmartTag to smartphone?

The Bluetooth SmartTag works only with Samsung smartphones and tablets . You can’t connect it to other devices!

The connection itself is very simple. It is enough to press the button mentioned above once and a notification will automatically appear on the smartphone:

By pressing the Add button, you will proceed to the device settings:

If the smartphone did not automatically detect the tag, then you can add it manually in the Samsung SmartThings application:

Now some interesting points. The tag is made in such a way that it cannot be linked to another smartphone (another Samsung account) until the owner deletes it from his smartphone:

This is logical, since any person can find and assign the lost tag to himself, after which you you will never be able to find the lost thing.

Even if you reset the tag to the factory settings, it will still not be possible to bind it to a new device until you untie it from the old one. The reset itself is very easy, for this you need:

  1. Remove the battery
  2. Hold down the large button on the front side of the label
  3. Insert the battery while continuing to hold the button
  4. Wait 3-4 seconds and release the button

Samsung Galaxy Smart main features Tag

Obviously, the main feature of the device is to determine its location. To see where SmartTag is located, you need to launch the SmartThings application or select menu item 9 in the curtain of any Samsung smartphone0009 Devices :

Here you will see the status of device – whether it is currently connected to a smartphone, whether it is nearby, or the connection with the Galaxy SmartTag is disconnected.

If you need to get more accurate data about the location of the tag, you must press the button View map , after which you will see the following window:

Previously, before the first viewing of the map, the smartphone will offer to install and configure the SmartThings Find add-on.

Where does the map come from and how does the Bluetooth tag show its exact GPS coordinates? In fact, everything is very simple. The Galaxy SmartTag, of course, has nothing to do with GPS. If the marker is in the field of view of the smartphone while viewing the map, then the smartphone displays its GPS coordinates.

But another scenario is quite possible, in which the smartphone will show the exact location of the mark for kilometers away from you. This can happen in several cases.

Every time the Bluetooth connection to the tag is lost, the smartphone immediately marks your GPS location . And now it is these coordinates that will be tied to the tag, because this was the last place where the phone “saw” SmartTag. Naturally, if someone removes the mark from this place before you return for it, the smartphone will no longer know its new coordinates.

The Galaxy SmartTag can also show its coordinates if any Samsung smartphone or tablet associated with your account is nearby. In this case, the device closest to the tag will send you its GPS coordinates.

In addition, there is another way to find out the location of the tag. If the Galaxy SmartTag fails to connect to a smartphone within half an hour, the tag will start sending a BLE signal so that it will be noticed by any Samsung device with SmartThings Find installed and configured. That is, not all Samsung smartphones will search for your tag, namely those on which users have enabled the corresponding service.

As soon as a smartphone detects a tag, it will send its coordinates to the Samsung server and from there your phone will receive the approximate location of the lost item.

Search for keys, wallet and other things in the house

The most interesting thing happens if you press the button Search nearby located just below the map. The smartphone will play the game cold-hot with you!

On the screen you will see the current strength of the SmartTag Bluetooth signal and a suggestion to walk around the room to find the tag:

Moving away from it, you will see the signal weakening and the corresponding inscription (“colder” by analogy with the game):

And when you get close to the mark, you will see the following picture:

The sensitivity is quite good. Moving away from the mark, even half a meter, you will see a change in signal strength.

But sometimes signal level jumps can occur and the smartphone may show a high signal for a few seconds when the tag is far away, or, conversely, show a weakening of the signal when you approach the tag.

Be that as it may, having played this “game” with my child 5 times, each time I found the mark hidden by him within 1-2 minutes. That is, the technology works quite well and reliably.

You can also press the note button at any time and the Galaxy SmartTag will start beeping. You can evaluate the sound quality on the following record:

There are 10 different ring tones available:

Separately, I will clarify that Galaxy SmartTag, unlike the more expensive version of SmartTag +, does not support UWB technology ( ultra-wideband ). That is, the smartphone will not be able to show the exact direction in which to go to the SmartTag tag, but only the signal level.

On the other hand, your smartphone must also support UWB, and currently Samsung only has 3 models with this chip: Galaxy Note20 Ultra, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra.

And the last important thing to know about label search. Currently, Galaxy SmartTag does not support smartphone disconnection notification. That is, you will not receive a notification when the link to the tag is lost. However, you can enable notification when a tag is found after a loss of connection:

What is important, you will receive a notification even if your tag is found by any Samsung smartphone anywhere in the world, after which the location of the found tag will be displayed on the map:

It’s bad, of course, that there is no notification about disconnection, as it would be convenient to get a corresponding message on your phone when leaving home and forgetting your wallet.

It is possible that this option will appear with updates. After all, both the smartphone and the tag support software updates over the air:

What else can Samsung Galaxy SmartTag do?

As you remember, there is a mechanical button here. So, in the SmartThings application, it can be configured for various tasks. For example, you can search for your smartphone by triggering a sound signal on it by double-clicking the button:

Or you can control other smart devices with the Galaxy SmartTag, for example, by pressing the button once to turn on the lights in the house, and long press to turn off:

Alternatively, you can attach the SmartTag to the keys and then you have a great use case:

  • Can’t find the keys? Use the tag search with your smartphone!
  • Can’t find your smartphone when you leave home? Then double-click the button on the label with the keys!
  • Did you find your keys and smartphone? Great, close the door, double-click the button on the label and the light in the hallway will automatically turn off.
  • Have you returned home? Press the button, open the doors and the light in the corridor will already be on.

Drawing conclusions…

In general, the Galaxy SmartTag is an interesting and useful device for the money (about $30). First of all, I was very pleased with the declared battery life (about 1 year) and the ability to quickly and inexpensively change the battery. Also, the label has a good design – neat and completely inconspicuous / low-key, which fits perfectly into the overall concept of the device.

Of course, the first label from Samsung also has its drawbacks, the main of which is the impossibility of using it with smartphones of other brands.

You also need to understand well what this label is capable of, so that later there are no unpleasant situations. This Bluetooth is a tag without communication with satellites or the Internet. Yes, there is hope that a Samsung smartphone will be next to the lost tag, on which its user also uses the SmartThings Find service, but this is more true for large cities.

How to use Samsung Galaxy SmartTag to find lost items

You can easily lose your smartphone, as well as your keys and wallet. We often spend around 6 months of our lives looking for lost and misplaced items, and that number can be worrisome given how precious time is. Luckily, with a little better planning, we can all save time. However, if you frequently lose your everyday items like bike keys, wallets or purses, smart tags like the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag can save you time.

These are small, tile-like objects that help you find trampled or lost items. There is a small hole at the top, making it easy to attach it to your car keys or put it in your purse. As long as the SmartTag battery is in working condition, you will be able to track it with your smartphone.

The only catch is that this technology is (yet) only available on Samsung smartphones.

How does Samsung SmartTag work and how do I activate it to find lost or missing items? Well, that is what we will find in this post today. Let’s start.

What is SAMSUNG SMARTTAG

As mentioned earlier, Samsung SmartTag helps you find your lost items. This small device uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to help you find it. This script works as long as the notch is near your phone. Otherwise, the tag uses other Galaxy smartphones to look up the BLE SmartTag, allowing lost items to be recovered.

SmartTag connects to the SmartThings app and the SmartThings search module on your Galaxy phone to connect and search. To get started, SmartThings app Samsung IoT hub and smart products like earphones, tags, other connected Galaxy phones, etc.

The best part about this tag is that you can also find your phone with it just by plugging it in. It has a button at the top that allows you to do the same. All you have to do is double click on it. And the story doesn’t end there. With SmartTag, you can also control select compatible smart home devices.

The controller handles things like IFFTT applets with connected devices that move when you press a button on the SmartTag. Fairytale, isn’t it?

Now that that’s settled, let’s see how to use SmartTag to help you identify misplaced items.

HOW TO SET UP AND USE SAMSUNG SMARTTAGS

As mentioned earlier, the SmartTag product works in conjunction with the SmartThings app. To perform the initial setup, follow these steps.

Step 1: Open the SmartThings app on your Galaxy phone and update the app if necessary. Then hold SmartTag next to your phone and press the button in the middle, you will see a popup on your phone.

You can press the start button and it is Samsung account Your registered tag.

Step 2: Once you’re done, you’ll need to Give the device a name.

You may be asked to find your tag here. If this is your first time, the standard permissions associated with the site will appear and you know very well what to do with them.

You can then see the status of the tag in the SmartThings app. The app will display the status as close as possible when you are in the same location.

Using tags is super, not rocket science. When you need to find something specific, press the browse map button and press the cycle button. This will cause the tag to emit a series of high tones to help you locate it. And guess what, you can even change the ringtone and tag volume.

Again, if the marker is far from where you are, you can use the navigation button so the map can navigate steps to it. Note that the SmartThings Find module will only display the last known location on your map.

The advantage of the Find Near button is that it gives you an idea of how close or far the device is. Full scale means you are close to the mark and pressing the ring button will help. If you find that the device’s signal is weaker, you need to move around to find out where it is.

Additional features

Another useful feature of this tag is that you can also use it to locate your phone. So, if you have lost your phone, all you have to do is double-tap the button on the shortcut. Your phone will ring if it is nearby. Otherwise, it will work similarly and use other Galaxy phones to detect it. Please note that SmartThings must also be installed on these phones.

To enable it, toggle the button next to “Allow the tag to find the button…” and select your phone from the list.

GALAXY SMARTTAG Restrictions

Samsung SmartTag currently only works on Samsung Galaxy phones. You will need other Galaxy smartphones for this technology to work seamlessly across different sites.

Therefore, if your partner or any other member of your family has an iPhone or any other Android phone, they will not be able to use those phones to help you find your lost items.
