If you find yourself tossing and turning for hours or waking up easily after finally drifting to sleep, consider buying a sound machine. While they’ve long been a trusted tool of sleep-deprived new parents trying to soothe fussy babies to sleep — and then to ensure said babies stay that way — sound machines, or white-noise machines, can help you sleep better at any age by working to mask a variety of background noises, from conversation in an adjoining room to sirens racing by or garbage trucks clanking cans around outside. Here are the best sound machines and white-noise machines you can buy online.

Best overall electronic | Best (less expensive) electronic | Best basic electronic | Best overall mechanical | Best (less expensive) mechanical | Best adaptive | Best for babies and kids | Best (less expensive) for babies and kids | Best for travel

Sound type and variety: A sound machine can generate sound either mechanically, via physical components moving inside it, or electronically. At their absolute simplest, sound machines typically make a consistent and even-toned whirring fan or static-y radio sound that’s intended to mask more disruptive and specific noises like people talking or a dog barking. As such, sleeping with a sound machine turned on can be akin to having a box fan blowing in your bedroom — and indeed, people who run hot and don’t need any frills may prefer an actual fan to a more specialized sound-focused device. But some modern sound machines offer white noise as well as a wider array of aural delights, like the sound of ocean waves crashing or crickets chirping.

Size and style: Ideally, a sound machine that takes up space in your bedroom will be, at the very least, somewhat compact and unobtrusive, and easy to fit onto a dresser or nightstand. Some are much more aesthetically pleasing than others, though, and we’ve taken that into account too.

Power source: Some sound machines have an internal rechargeable battery or will run on standard AA batteries. That makes them much more portable for travel or convenient to move to different spaces throughout your home (though you can also often plug them in on your nightstand or dresser for more stationary use). Others are more old-school and must be plugged in at all times. We’ve indicated whether each machine below has a rechargeable battery or an option to use standard AA batteries, and what type of plugged-in power it can use (typically AC and/or USB).

Additional features: If a sound machine offers any extras like a timer or nightlight, we’ve noted it below.

LectroFan Evo White-Noise Sound Machine

Electronic noise | 10 fan sounds, 10 white noise variations, 2 ocean sounds | AC or USB power | Timer and headphone jack

The LectroFan Evo offers 10 non-looping fan sounds and 10 non-looping white noise variations, as well as two ocean sounds — “calm” and “surf.” Reviewers on Amazon rave about its noise-blocking abilities, with one writing that the noise from their neighbors was so loud at night, “I almost considered moving out or at least switching to an upstairs unit … That is, until I happened upon this amazing little device.” Its white noise and fan sounds “can get loud enough to mask anything,” they write, rejoicing that they “can now peacefully snooze through not only my neighbors’ stomping kitchen antics, but also the 8 A. M. garbage truck arriving bright and early every Wednesday.”

The LectroFan Evo does not have an internal battery, so stationary use is ideal, though it’s small enough to travel with if you choose. It is similar in size to an overturned cereal bowl, with a fluid hexagonal shape and button controls located on the machine’s angled top; its aesthetic is neither overly sleek and modern nor clunky and offensive. The power cord has a USB-A connector, so you can plug it into any USB power source, or use a standard outlet with the included USB wall adapter. It comes in two colors, charcoal or white, and it has a wired headphone jack that may come in handy if you like to use white noise during your waking hours, say, while working from home.

With more than 30,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, this budget-friendly sound machine is a popular purchase for kids’ bedrooms. Since it can be used with four AA batteries, it doesn’t need to be near an outlet, though if you want to plug it in it’s just like our two LectroFan picks on this list: The power cord has a USB-A connector, or you can use it with a standard outlet thanks to the included USB wall adapter. The machine can produce six different sounds, though some reviewers have mentioned becoming distracted by loops in the recordings; “If you have any neurologic issues where patterns drive you nuts, get a more expensive machine,” one writes. “It takes my brain roughly 5 minutes on the rain pattern to find the loop and after that hits, I hear it every time.” Size-wise, the Homedics sound machine is lower-profile — but with a larger diameter — than either of the LectroFans on this list; it comes in three colors and looks a bit like a UFO, complete with a couple small lights on top (albeit ones that could potentially disrupt photosensitive sleepers). If you’re not especially picky about the nuances or sound quality of your white noise, or if you or your child prefers nature sounds, this machine is a decent budget pick.

LectroFan High-Fidelity White-Noise Machine

Electronic noise | 10 fan sounds and 10 white noise variations | AC or USB power | Timer

com/strategist/_components/clay-paragraph/instances/cl4ztdh5r000w3b6u57newtui@published” data-word-count=”92″>Strategist senior editor Jen Trolio was inspired to pounce on this LectroFan High-Fidelity White-Noise Machine during an Amazon Prime Day sale, because the physical fan in the Marpac Dohm Classic that she’d bought when her first child was born had started to sputter after three years of use. Trolio has since purchased a second LectroFan for herself and her husband. “I like that it gets a lot louder and has a much larger volume range than the Marpac Dohm ever did,” Trolio says, a function of its electronic rather than mechanical noise.

The LectroFan offers 10 non-looping fan sounds and 10 non-looping white noise variations. It also has a timer option. Functionally it is extremely similar to our top pick, the LectroFan Evo, but it doesn’t have any ocean sounds or a headphone jack. It also has a more retro, sharper-edged hexagonal design, with buttons on the front instead of on the top. Trolio notes that the toggle style of the combined power-slash-timer button can cause accidental presses of one or the other — the buttons on the Evo are more separated — but doesn’t find it to be a dealbreaker. Like the Evo, this sound machine does not have an internal battery, so stationary use is ideal, though also like the Evo, it’s small enough to fit into a suitcase if you want to travel with it. The power cord has a USB-A connector, so you can plug it into a USB power source, or use a standard outlet with the included USB wall adapter. It fits easily on a nightstand or dresser, and it comes in black or white.

It looks more like a small and sleek wireless Bluetooth speaker with minimalist volume controls than a sound machine, and like the much more basic and homely Marpac Dohm Classic below, produces mechanical noise by way of a real whirring fan inside. It has 10 volume settings, runs on AC power, and you can adjust the tone of the fan by rotating the machine’s casing. It comes in two colors, charcoal or black, and has a timer as well as a smartphone app that functions as a remote control, letting you program the timer, set a schedule for the machine, or turn the machine on and off.

Long before the pandemic upended our collective ability to sleep through the night, this one-button sound machine was the only thing that helped New York Magazine deputy editor Alexis Swerdloff drift off in an apartment with paper-thin walls. Since then, the “Stormtrooper-helmet-like gadget” has earned a place among our 100 all-time greatest hits and has garnered over 12,000 five-star reviews from Amazon customers — many of which specifically describe it as “easy” to use. That’s because the Marpac Dohm Classic is a mechanical noise machine that offers just one sound: the whir of the actual fan inside. It has two speed settings for that fan, and you can twist the outer housing to adjust the tone, and that’s about it; “The genius lies in its simplicity,” says Swerdloff, noting that it “can be operated while you’re basically still asleep. ” She’s not alone in her appreciation; the machine has actually been in production since 1962 and has a devoted cult following. You do need to turn it on before going to sleep and off once you’re awake, but it’s a good option for sleepers who prefer the sound of a real fan without the temperature changes or draftiness. It also comes in black, pink, tan, gray, or RealTree camouflage print.

Electronic noise | 10 white noise and environmental sounds with 3 “richness” layers for each | AC power only | Timer, headphone jack, and adaptive sound technology

Many Amazon reviewers call out this sound machine’s “adaptive” feature that automatically raises the volume of the machine’s noise when it hears other noises that may disrupt your sleep — but that feature also makes it one of the most expensive options on the market. If you decide to pony up, you’ll get the adaptive technology on top of 10 different non-looping sound options that were recorded in real environments, including white noise, fireplace, ocean, meadow, and rainfall. It also has a “richness” button that Sound+Sleep says will enhance any of the machine’s 10 sounds by layering different recordings to create a more complex and immersive soundscape (so with three richness layers for each sound, you technically have 30 total sound variations on this machine). It’s a little larger than other sound machines on this list, runs on AC power, and thanks to the dial on the front, looks a bit like a piece of vintage stereo equipment. It also comes in a “mini” travel version that is slightly cheaper and can run on AC power, USB power, or AA batteries.

This all-in-one nightlight, sound machine, and “OK-to-wake” device is popular among parents with kids of all ages, thanks to its good looks, dimmable night light (which you can customize to shine in nearly every color of the rainbow), and smartphone app for programming a variety of settings, from on and off times to sleep training light signals for toddlers who tend to rise while it’s still dark out.

The Hatch is AC power only, and its tapered cylindrical shape brings to mind an oversized soda can. Button controls are concealed on the bottom of the device, a touch ring on the top allows you to cycle through colors and sounds, or you can program it and change settings through the companion smartphone app. It’s one of the most aesthetically pleasing sound machines on this list — for kids or adults — and for about $20 more, you can get an upgraded version, the Hatch Rest+, which displays a digital clock, has a battery backup, wifi connectivity (over the original Hatch’s Bluetooth), and contains a two-way audio monitor.

Since being featured on Shark Tank in 2016, Hatch, previously known as Hatch Baby, has become one of the most well-reviewed manufacturers of white noise and light machines. The Hatch Restore is their first offering aimed at adults and has a rich array of impressive features that our testing team found to be both practical and effective.

The Restore has a library of soundscapes, including both white noise and natural sounds, such as water. While these can be used individually like a traditional white noise machine, owners can also use them as part of the Restore’s easily programmable sleep routines.

Sleepers can set a multi-step routine on the easy-to-use app. Steps can include soundscapes, meditations, sleep stories, and light adjustments, all of which are intended to gently guide users to sleep. The Restore also has a programmable sunrise alarm to wake sleepers up with sun-mimicking light.

While some soundscapes are bundled with the machine, Hatch’s full library of meditations, sleep stories, and soundscapes requires a subscription after the free six-month trial finishes. Hatch stands behind the Restore with a 1-year limited warranty against manufacturer’s defects, and customers can return their Restore in its original packaging within 60 days for a refund of the purchase price.

While multiple sounds, features, and settings may appeal to some people, others may prefer a white noise machine that is easy-to-use and has a minimalist appearance. The Yogasleep Dohm Classic Natural Sound Machine is an affordable fan-generated white noise machine that fulfills these requirements, offering easy manual adjustment despite only having a single switch.

To turn on the device, users flip the switch to either the low or high volume setting. Once this is set, the sound of the fan can be adjusted by turning the top of the machine. This changes the pitch and tone of the white noise, allowing for brown and pink noise depending on the setting. Some people prefer fan-generated white noise to pre-recorded tracks, as there is no looping and fans have a unique, appealing rhythm. However, moving parts do sometimes break down and create additional, less soothing noises.

Sleep trials are unusual for white noise machines, but Yogasleep allows customers to return their Dohm Classic within 101 nights if they aren’t satisfied. The company also offers a 1-year limited warranty which covers manufacturing or workmanship flaws.

“White noise machine” is a catch-all term that can describe a wide range of models, ranging from those that create white through mechanical means, such as with a fan, to those that play both white noise and soothing tracks, like nature sounds or music. The connection among these different machines is that all are meant to offer sounds that drown out unwanted noises, also known as noise pollution, while relaxing or focusing the listener. Because of this goal, many white noise machines actually produce the more calming pink or brown range of noise.

People use white noise machines for several distinct reasons, including studying or working, meditating, or reducing the perception of tinnitus. However, possibly the most popular use is to help people fall or stay asleep.

Research shows that white noise can help improve sleep, particularly in noisy environments. Babies also show a good response to white noise, with one study finding that 80% of very young infants fell asleep within five minutes when exposed to white noise, versus only 25% of those without white noise. There is also some evidence that white noise may calm infants who suffer from colic.

Of course, what aids or hinders sleep is always highly personal. White noise machines can help many people achieve better sleep, but they do not work for everyone. Some people, regardless of age, respond poorly to white noise machines. Even those who enjoy white noise or nature sounds may be very particular about what sounds they find soothing, and the wrong frequency of white noise may quickly become aggravating. If this is true for you, it’s worth investing in a model that allows you to customize the pitch and tone of the noise.

Choosing a white noise machine can feel difficult, particularly with the wide range of varieties on the market. This guide will walk you through what you need to know before making a decision, including both critical attributes like volume control and additional functions like alarms and lights.

What to Consider When Purchasing a White Noise Machine

By considering these eight important factors, it’s easier to decide what features are important to you and what machine might work best for your needs.

Sound Options
White noise machines either play recorded sounds or mechanically generate white noise, usually with a fan. Choosing between these options is largely a matter of personal preference, though people interested in other sounds (such as waves or birdsong) will most likely prefer a machine with recorded sounds for a wider variety of options.

Volume Options
The volume of a white noise machine should be loud enough to cover noise pollution but not so loud as to interrupt sleep or damage hearing. This is particularly important for children, as studies have shown that excessively loud white noise can be especially harmful to them. Most white noise machines have a wide range of volume options and sensitive controls, though some lower-end or minimalist models may only allow you to choose between two or three volume settings.

Value
There are white noise machines available at virtually every price point, though the majority cost less than $100. Lower-priced models tend to have fewer features, while those at the higher end usually have lights, alarms, and/or other additional functions. These can offer a good value if you would otherwise buy a separate machine for these functions, but lower-priced white noise machines work well for those who are only interested in soothing sounds.

Smart Features
Just like so many other electronics, many white noise machines now offer smart features, like integration with apps or home networks. These models tend to also have other functions, such as lights or routines, that make app connectivity useful. For most situations, this is a non-essential feature, but parents may appreciate having this kind of control over their child’s white noise machine.

Display
Light from a white noise machine can disrupt sleep, so it’s crucial to choose a model with either minimal light or with lights that can be dimmed or turned off. Many well-made machines have no lights at all, while others have a clock screen or even function as a night light. The latter variety usually allows for more in-depth control, allowing owners to change the color and intensity of the light.

Timers
Some people prefer to have their white noise machine running all night, while others like to have it turn off automatically at a certain point. Most white noise machines have some kind of timing function, but this can range from preset automatic shut-offs to programmable on and off timers set through an app.

Portability
If you plan to take your white noise machine traveling, or even move it from room to room on a regular basis, it’s worth considering its portability. While many white noise machines are quite small, particularly those without additional lighting features, they may require a plug-in outlet or weigh more than one might expect. Travel-friendly models, however, are likely to be lightweight and offer features like USB charging.

Other Features
As the white noise machine market is fairly crowded, many models try to set themselves apart with additional features. Alarms and lighting are both common, as are USB ports for charging your electronics. Headphone jacks are rarer but highly valued by those who share a room with a partner not interested in white noise or other sleep sounds. Depending on your needs, these features may be necessary, useful but not essential, or entirely unwanted.

Frequently Asked Questions About White Noise Machines

What Does “White Noise” Mean?

White noise contains all audible frequencies, which coalesce into what we perceive as a humming sound. Common everyday sources of white noise include fans, television static, and air conditioners. So-called “white” noise machines often produce pink or brown noises, which are like white noise with more intensity at the lower frequencies. These sounds are usually more calming, and many stereotypically relaxing sounds — including rain and waves — tend to be in this range. Blue, violet, and grey noises also exist but are less useful for relaxation.

What Type of Background Noise is Best for Sleeping?

White, pink, and brown noises are all suitable for sleep, as are natural sounds that fall into these ranges. Since these sounds contain all audible frequencies, they “fill in” the gaps between unwanted noises that may otherwise wake us up.

Can White Noise Be Harmful?

While white noise is generally thought to be safe, there are some risks and considerations to keep in mind. Any prolonged noise over 70 decibels — the level of a washing machine when standing next to it — can damage hearing, so it’s crucial to keep white noise machines at a lower volume than this. There is also a small amount of evidence that regular white noise as a part of tinnitus therapy may cause long-term issues for those with tinnitus, but this is unlikely to be a concern for most people using white noise machines as part of their sleep routine.

Nonetheless, if you have concerns or underlying health issues, it’s always best to talk with your doctor before starting a new routine.

Are White Noise Machines Safe for Infants and Children?

White noise machines appear to be safe for children, regardless of age, so long as they are operated properly. One study has shown that many models are capable of being loud enough to damage an infant’s hearing, but the study’s authors were clear that the volume, machine position, and duration were all important factors in reducing this risk. They recommended placing the white noise machine some distance from the crib, playing it at a comfortable volume, and not using it over extended periods.

Is White Noise Helpful for Focus?

White noise aids focus by blocking out noise pollution. Since it “fills in” the space between outside sounds, it thereby dampens them. For people who work in loud spaces or are easily distracted, this can make a significant difference in their focus. There are also some indications that white noise may affect perception and cognition depending on the timing and task at hand.

While a few sounds, features and settings may appeal to some people, others may prefer a white noise machine that is easy to use and has a minimalistic look. Marpac Dohm is a fan-generated white noise generator that fulfills these requirements by offering easy manual tuning despite having only one switch.

To turn on the Marpac Dohm, users set the switch to either low or high volume. Once this is installed, the sound of the fan can be adjusted by turning the top of the machine. This changes the pitch and tone of the white noise, allowing for brown and pink noise depending on the setting. Some people prefer fan-made white noise over pre-recorded tracks as there is no looping and the fans have a uniquely appealing beat. However, moving parts sometimes fail and create additional, less soothing sounds.

Sleep tests are unusual for white noise machines, but Yogasleep allows customers to return their Marpac Dohm within 101 nights if they are not satisfied. The company also offers a 1-year limited warranty that covers manufacturing or manufacturing defects.

People use white noise machines for several reasons, including study or work, meditation, or to reduce the perception of tinnitus. However, perhaps the most popular use is to help people fall asleep or stay asleep.

If this is true for you, it is worth getting a model that allows you to adjust the pitch and tone of the noise.

How to choose a white noise machine

Choosing a white noise machine can be difficult, especially with so many varieties on the market. This guide will walk you through what you need to know before making a decision, including both important attributes like volume control and advanced features like alarms and lighting.

Points to consider when buying a white noise canceller

With these eight important factors in mind, it’s easier to decide which features are important to you and which machine is best for your needs.

Sound parameters
White noise machines either play back recorded sounds or mechanically generate white noise, usually with a fan. Choosing between these options is largely a matter of personal preference, although people interested in other sounds (such as waves or birdsong) will likely prefer a pre-recorded machine for a wider variety of options.

Volume settings
The volume of the white noise machine should be loud enough to override noise pollution, but not so loud as to disturb sleep or damage hearing. This is especially important for children, as studies have shown that excessively loud white noise can be especially harmful to them. Most white noise machines have a wide range of volume settings and sensitive controls, although some lower end or minimalist models may only let you choose between two or three volume settings.

How big is Kim Kardashian’s butt

Appreciate
White noise machines are available at almost every price point, although most are under $100. Cheaper models tend to have fewer features, while more expensive models usually have lights, alarms, and/or other extras. They can offer good value for money if you would otherwise buy a separate machine for these features, but cheaper white noise machines are well suited for those who are only interested in soothing sounds.

Smart features
Like many other electronic devices, many white noise machines now offer smart features such as integration with apps or home networks. These models tend to also have other features, such as lighting or procedures, that make connecting apps useful. In most cases, this is a non-essential feature, but parents may appreciate having such control over their child’s white noise machine.

Display
Light from a car with white noise can disturb sleep, so it is important to choose a model with either minimal lighting or a backlight that can be dimmed or turned off. Many well-made machines have no lights at all, while others have a clock screen or even function as a night light. The latter variety usually allows for greater control, allowing wearers to change the color and intensity of the light.

Timers
Some people prefer their white noise machine to run all night, while others prefer it to turn off automatically at a certain point. Most white noise machines have some sort of timing feature, but this can range from preset automatic shutdowns to programmable on and off timers set via the app.

Portability
If you plan to take your white noise machine on a trip or even move it regularly from room to room, you should consider portability. Although many white noise machines are quite small, especially those without additional lighting features, they may require an outlet or weigh more than you might expect. However, travel-friendly models are likely to be lightweight and offer features such as USB charging.

Other features
Since the market for white noise machines is quite crowded, many models try to stand out with additional features. Both alarms and lighting are common, as are USB ports for charging electronics. Headphone jacks are rarer, but highly valued by those who share a room with a partner with no interest in white noise or other sleep sounds. Depending on your needs, these features may be necessary, useful, but not required, or completely undesirable.

Frequently asked questions about white noise machines

What does white noise mean?

White noise contains all audible frequencies that merge into what we perceive as a buzzing sound. Common everyday sources of white noise include fans, TV static, and air conditioners. So-called white noise machines often produce pink or brown noises that are similar to white noise with more intensity at low frequencies. These sounds tend to be more soothing, and many stereotypically relaxing sounds, including rain and waves, tend to be in this range. There are also blue, purple and gray noises, but they are less useful for relaxation.

What is the best background noise for sleep?

White, pink and brown noise are suitable for sleep, as are natural sounds that fall within these ranges. Because these sounds contain all audible frequencies, they fill in the gaps between unwanted noises that might otherwise wake us up.

Can white noise be harmful?

While white noise is generally considered safe, there are some risks and considerations to be aware of. Any continuous noise above 70 decibels – the level of a washing machine standing next to it – can damage hearing, so it’s important that white noise machines run at a lower volume than this. There is also little evidence that regular white noise as part of tinnitus therapy can cause long-term problems for people with tinnitus, but this is unlikely to be a problem for most people who use white noise machines as part of their sleep routine.

However, if you have concerns or health concerns, it’s always best to talk to your doctor before starting a new daily routine.

Are white noise machines safe for babies and children?

White noise machines seem to be safe for children regardless of age if used properly. One study found that many models were capable of being loud enough to damage an infant’s hearing, but the study authors made it clear that volume, machine position, and duration were important factors in reducing this risk. They recommended placing the white noise machine some distance from the crib, playing it at a comfortable volume, and not using it for long periods of time.

Is white noise good for concentration?

White noise helps you focus by blocking out noise pollution. Since it fills the space between external sounds, it thereby dampens them. For people who work in a noisy environment or are easily distracted, this can significantly affect their concentration. There are also some indications that white noise can affect perception and cognition depending on time and task.
