Doorbells. Types and features. How to choose and install

Today you can buy any model of a doorbell for an apartment in the distribution network. This simple essential device is designed to sound an alarm when guests or friends arrive. Its device includes a button and an alarm device. Electric doorbells appeared after the invention of electromagnets, which are the main element of the doorbell. Previously, the bell device was simple and unattractive, but gradually its design became more complicated. As a result, the doorbell has become a convenient modern device.

Doorbells have a very simple device, but they are made in several types, differing in ring tone, size and shape, as well as quality and cost.

Mechanical doorbells

Mechanical doorbells are often used to design and decorate old-style doors. Outwardly, they can be designed in the form of a hammer, a ship’s bell, etc.

Electromechanical doorbell

The operation of the electromechanical doorbell is as follows. When an electric current is applied to the electromagnet coil, the percussion mechanism is attracted to the core, touches the metal plate, which serves as a sound resonator. As a result, a sound is heard, the volume of which depends on the size of the resonator.

Benefits

  • Long service life.
  • Easy installation.
  • Simple device.

Disadvantages

  • The device will not operate without mains power.
  • Lack of customization of different sounds and melodies.
  • Uniform signal.

Electronic doorbells

The connection of electronic bells is practically the same as the connection of electromechanical structures, but their internal structure is distinguished by the presence of electronic stuffing. The sound is heard not from hitting a metal plate, but from a loudspeaker. Such calls are equipped with volume controls and a setting for changing the type of melody.

Electronic doorbells are divided into two types:
  • Wired . These are ordinary simple calls that operate from pressing a button that closes an electrical circuit. Such doorbells were placed in Soviet times on the doors of all apartments. Today, wired calls have already been redesigned. Various melodies or sounds from popular films are built into it. Such models of calls are the most reliable, they are suitable for many doors. Benefits : work in all conditions, reliable and simple design. Disadvantages of : inability to work in the absence of electricity, the need to pull wires, drill holes in the wall.
  • Wireless . Such designs are convenient for installation in private homes. The guests who came do not stand near the door of the house, but near the courtyard gate, located at some distance from the house. To install wireless bells, you do not need to run wires from the gate to the house. When the button is pressed, the signal is transmitted via radio waves to the bell located in the house. Different models are able to work at different distances of the button from the main unit, but no more than 100 meters. Wireless calls are made in two versions: on batteries or on accumulators. They do not require a 220 volt household network, so they are installed where there is no electricity, for example, in a forester’s house or a forest hut. Benefits: are able to function in the absence of a household electrical network, have a sealed housing without any wires coming out, which prevents water from entering. Installation of wireless bells is simple, no wires required. Disadvantages of : if there is a significant distance and the presence of metal or concrete barriers between the button and the signal unit, its functioning deteriorates. Working in the cold can cause the wireless bell to fail.

Video bells

The video doorbell is now a common option, replacing simple electrical designs.

Advantages of video doorbells:
  • Video call can be installed anywhere: on the gate, on the apartment door, on the office door. The video call is equipped with a device that allows you to talk, so the owner does not need to leave the house and open the gate.
  • It is convenient to use in the apartment, there is no need to drill the door and make a peephole, as the image of a person with whom you can talk is visible on the screen.
  • Video calls are convenient for remote use. The kit includes a hidden camera capable of recording image and sound. Such a call model does not need to be connected to a household network, it is able to operate on batteries or batteries.
  • An additional feature of the video call is the ability to remotely open the electric door lock. More expensive models have a video recording function, infrared diodes for night illumination and video recording, as well as an answering machine function.
  • Possibility to adjust the volume of ringtones and conversations.
  • There are models of video calls that allow you to talk with the owner, who is not at home, but in a completely different place. This function is provided by IP devices built into the bell body.

The set of video calls includes: a communication channel, an autonomous power supply device, a calling panel in a protective design that protects against vandals. The image can be displayed on a TV or computer.

In addition to the quality of workmanship and the number of functions of the company, manufacturers began to improve the external design of doorbells. Previously, the case was made in the form of an ordinary plastic box, which was hidden during installation so that no one could see it. Today, the doorbell body is part of the interior of the hallway, it can have a different shape and beautiful color.

Connecting wireless bells

The easiest way to connect a wireless doorbell is because there is no need to run wires. The power supply of wireless call options is most often from batteries or accumulators.

The whole installation process consists of fixing the main unit and button on the wall or other surface. The button can be glued with glue or double-sided tape, or fixed with self-tapping screws, depending on the type of surface.

The doorbell signal box can be fixed to the wall like a button, or simply placed on top of the cabinet. Some wireless bell kits include a battery operated button and a mains powered main unit. In this case, too, there are no big difficulties. In this case, the signal unit is simply plugged into the socket.

It is recommended to install the button at a height not exceeding 1.5 meters, as this is the most comfortable height for its use.

Connecting wired bells

It is much more difficult to connect a wired electric bell to a 220 V supply. In this case, the connection is made by analogy with a light switch. A phase is connected through the button, and zero goes directly to the main unit. The diagram shows the wiring.

If you have recently received a new apartment in a new building and want to install an entry bell, it is recommended to follow a certain order:
  • Choose the best places to install the main unit and button.
  • De-energize the mains by turning off the power input breakers in the switchboard.
  • Drill a hole in the wall to pull the wires connecting the button to the main unit. When doing this, be careful not to get on other wires in the wall.
  • Run strobes from the hole to the place where the bell and button are connected. If you use cable channels for wires, then there is no need to make strobes in the walls.
  • Fasten the button and the main unit to the planned positions on the walls.
  • Remove the front cover of the main unit and the buttons to access the terminals.
  • Connect the neutral wire to the main unit.
  • Connect the phase of the main unit to the button.
  • Connect the phase from the button to the phase terminal of the switchboard.
  • If there is a grounding loop in the apartment, and the corresponding terminal in the bell, it is necessary to ground the bell.
  • Visually check that the wires are connected correctly, comparing with the diagram, close the covers of the signal unit and buttons.
  • Apply power by turning on the circuit breakers in the switchboard.
  • Test the operation of the bell by pressing the button.

How to choose doorbells

  • Doorbells should be purchased at specialized electrical outlets. It is undesirable to make a purchase in a hardware store.
  • The cost of the device can vary widely, and depends on the number of functions, overall dimensions, maximum range, external design.
  • In large buildings it is necessary to install bells with a louder melody.
  • When purchasing, please check the type of batteries used. If they are of a non-standard size, then it will be difficult to find the same batteries to replace them later. It is best if the power is supplied from batteries, as they can be charged.
  • Ease of installation is an important factor when choosing a device. The simplest fastening is double-sided tape.
  • A pleasant sounding melody also plays an important role, as an unpleasant melody will become annoying for a long time. If there are doorbells with different melodies on sale, or with a set of melodies, then it is better to choose the option that is best for you.
  • The design of the doorbell housing must be compatible with the interior of the room. The backlight function of the button will make it possible to quickly find it in the dark on the gate, or on the dark door of the apartment in the stairwell.
  • It is best to choose a doorbell model for which a warranty is given, issued with the appropriate documents.

A large selection of models makes it possible to choose a remote or wired bell according to the external design of the room. It can be a small simple case, or an imitation of a bird’s nest. There are also doorbells with the ability to record melodies and sounds. It is more convenient to use a wireless call in country houses on gates, when it is problematic to lay wires. But at the same time, you should take into account possible obstacles that can weaken the radio signal.

DIY doorbell: wiring diagram

  • Types of calls
  • Connection rules
  • Repair
  • In order to arrange convenient access to the apartment, it is necessary to understand the doorbell scheme. Today, there are many models of such devices, but the general principle of their operation remains almost the same. Consider how to properly install and repair the bell if necessary.

Depending on the type of doorbell, the connection method may differ significantly

    Device features

A whole list of additional devices is installed in each house to create comfortable conditions at the entrance. One of them is the doorbell. Its direct purpose is to notify people in the apartment that guests have come to them.

Every person is superficially familiar with the bell device. A call button is attached to the outside of the dwelling, a speaker is installed inside the apartment, which picks up the signal from the button and transmits it in the form of an audible alert. This is how simple models work. In modern devices, the functions are greatly expanded up to the transfer of a video image online to mobile phones. Depending on personal preferences, the available budget and the requirements of the owners, it is chosen how to make a doorbell: in the form of a simple add-on or with all available auxiliary features.

Very often, home owners plan to install a bell for a door with their own hands, so it is important to understand what is the scheme of its device and the connection method. To do this, first of all, you should consider the main models that exist on the modern market.

Modern doorbell with video peephole to keep your home safe

    Types of bells

Today, the range of products in this group is huge and continues to expand. With the development of technology, not only the external characteristics of calls are improving, but also their functionality.

Installation of the doorbell is now done in a matter of minutes, as manufacturers have foreseen the device’s lightness and ease of use in advance.

There are the following types of doorbells:

    • Wired. This scheme is already becoming obsolete. All elements are interconnected by a cable, which somewhat complicates the connection process. The instructions should include a diagram to assist with installation.
    • Wireless. Instead of a cord, a radio signal transmission scheme is used and its reception through an antenna. The only wire may be the power supply cable.
    • Sound. The signal is a sound notification: a call, a melody, a musical composition, a voice recording.
    • Video calls . Connecting a doorbell with a video camera allows you to see what is happening behind the door. Some models are activated only when a button is pressed, while others can turn on, focusing on a motion sensor or broadcast a picture continuously.
    • Intercoms. Allows you to send voice messages both from inside the house and outside. Can be combined with a video system.

Varieties of doorbells depending on the principle of operation

    Connection rules

Connecting the device is carried out in several stages, but before you install the doorbell, you need to carefully consider its location. Please note that the sound of the signal should be heard well in all rooms, this is especially true for private houses. Some models can be supplemented with several speakers that can be placed in different parts of the house. And if there are several inputs, you can purchase an additional call button.

So, how to connect the doorbell:

    • Wireless. Do-it-yourself wiring diagram for such a doorbell is the simplest. To get started, install the call button in a convenient location. Then decide where to hang the speaker, taking into account the range of the device, taking into account possible signal obstructions. Elements are fastened with bolts or adhesive tape.
    • Wired. Here you need to figure out in advance how to connect the doorbell. Keep in mind that you will have to run a wire connecting both devices, so think over the best path in advance. It is advisable to disguise it in a wall, under a false ceiling or a plinth. From the button there is a wire to the speaker, and from there to the outlet or directly to the mains. For the safety of work, first turn off the voltage in the switchboard. The very principle of connection is as follows: first, the wires for connecting the device (phase and zero) are removed, the power wire is inserted into the housing of the bell speaker and attached to the terminals. The second part is output to the call button, power is supplied to the call and its operation is checked.
    • Video calls . The main difference is the additional placement of the camera above the door and the screen for receiving pictures.

    Repair

If certain problems occur after installation or during operation, you need to know how to fix the doorbell yourself. The most common cause of failures is the departure of contacts. To fix the problem, you need to look at the places of key connections. It can be a button or a speaker inside the house.
