Samsung Refrigerator Noise Stops When Door Open (Ultimate Guide)
Hello there, fellow Samsung fridge owners! Let me first tell you that you made an awesome choice for your kitchen. Samsung refrigerators look sleek but they are also highly reliable and durable, so you picked well!
Onto the problem – your Samsung refrigerator noise stops when the door opens and you are not sure why, right? Don’t worry, we know everything about it. Continue reading to find out more about the problem you are experiencing and the possible solutions for it.
Are Samsung Fridges Silent?
If you are always hearing some kind of noise coming from your fridge, you may be worried if everything is alright. No need to panic, Samsung fridges are not completely silent, so it’s normal to hear yours working occasionally or even frequently.
In fact, you should be worried if you don’t hear any noise coming from your fridge for a long time. This could mean that the refrigerator compressor, the essential part of a fridge, is not working properly.
As annoying as the sound may be, you cannot expect your fridge to always be silent. Fridges normally make a relatively quiet humming sound and this is usually a sign that your fridge is working properly.
Why Is Your Samsung Fridge Making Noise But Stops When the Door Opens?
If you hear an abnormal sound coming from your fridge that stops once you open the door, this indicates a problem with the evaporator fan in most cases.
The fan in your refrigerator automatically turns off when you open the door. The fan works to maintain an even temperature in the fridge. When you open the door, the temperature outside the fridge is usually much higher, so the fan would have to work harder to keep cool air in there.
Instead, it turns off and conserves energy, saves you money, and prolongs the fridge’s lifetime.
So, if any weird sounds disappear once you open the door, the issue that causes the noise is most likely the fan.

1.
Whining Sound
One of the abnormal sounds your fridge can make is a whining sound. Whining can happen if the fan on the inside of your fridge struggles to work properly. This can be due to a defective motor, built-up ice, or dirt and debris.
2. Buzzing Noise
A buzzing sound can also happen because of a refrigerator’s fan malfunction. The quiet buzzing sound is a normal occurrence, you should only worry if it is louder than usual.
3. Grinding Sound
If you hear a grinding sound coming from the inside of your refrigerator, it is most likely due to a fan hitting something while working.
Samsung Refrigerator Noise Stops When Door Opens – Solution
Now that you know what can cause your refrigerator to make weird noises until you open the door, let’s talk about the possible solutions.
These are all easy enough to do by yourself. You will need a couple of hours at most for each of these solutions, so make sure to make enough time.
1.
Level the Fridge
If you bought a new fridge recently, there is a chance that the person who was setting it up didn’t level it properly. The fridge should be set up at a maximum height and the front wheels should not be touching the ground.
If the fridge is not leveled, the fan may not be either, which can cause the noise you hear before you open the door.
2. Seal the Doors Properly
Inspect the doors of your fridge for any cracks or openings. If your doors are not sealed properly, the outside air will mess with the fridge’s desired temperature, causing the fan to work much harder than it normally would. This usually causes a loud humming sound.
Speaking about doors, always have your door alarm on for your Samsung fridge. If your door is open for more than two minutes, the alarm will make a beeping sound so you can fix the problem right away.
If you don’t have this option on, you may accidentally leave the door open for a while, which can mess with the temperature inside of the fridge, and therefore the fan.
3. Check the Airflow
The most common problem of noise is due to the obstructed airflow around the fan blades. In this case, you will probably hear a grinding sound or a rattling noise as the fan blades touch an object around it.
Check to see if the area around the fan inside your fridge is empty. Don’t keep any food or containers right in front of the fan. Make sure that the fan has enough space to work properly.
The problem can also be due to frost buildup which can further damage the fan motor. Fan blades hitting ice can cause a banging sound. This is easily solved, you will just have to defrost the fridge. Follow the next steps to do so.

- Remove all the food and dishes from your fridge. Ideally, put it somewhere equally cold so it doesn’t go bad while you clean the refrigerator.
- Unplug your fridge from the outlet. You don’t want it to be connected to the electricity with all the water that will be around while it defrosts.
- Put towels around and below the fridge.
- Let the fridge defrost naturally. Do not use any other equipment, such as hair dryers and similar.
- Ensure that the towels are not too wet. Replace them a couple of times throughout the process so they can soak up water.
- When the fridge is defrosted and you soaked up all the water around and below it, connect it to the electricity again.
- Return the food to the fridge and ensure that none of it is too close to the fan.
Furthermore, make sure that you figure out the cause of the ice buildup so it doesn’t happen again.
4. Observe Changes
Samsung advises you to wait a full day after you have tried all of these solutions to see if your fridge works properly again.
What To Do If Nothing Helps
There is a small chance that none of the solutions will work. If you still experience the same problem with your Samsung refrigerator, you will need to fix the root cause of the problem.
Contact Samsung Support
The first thing that you should do is contact Samsung support. Explain your problem and ask if they can help. They may suggest doing some of the things you already tried, so explain the problem and all that you did to try and fix it in detail.
If you bought your fridge recently, it’s best to use the warranty to get your fridge up and running properly again.
Reach Out to a Handyman
If you don’t have a warranty and the support couldn’t help, you should reach out to a handyman or an engineer for help. You should contact someone who is specifically experienced in Samsung fridge repairs. Avoid people who have bad reviews online or those who don’t have any at all.
If your motor is defective, be prepared to spend several hundred dollars for replacement. While this is a lot of money, it’s better to fix the problem as soon as possible than to experiment with solving it yourself and making even bigger damage.

Why Does Your Fridge Make Weird Noises At Night?
If you noticed your fridge making strange noises during the night you might get worried or annoyed if you can’t sleep well. So, why does your fridge make weird noises at night? The truth is, it probably doesn’t.
Fridges make some level of noise all the time. As mentioned, the mechanisms behind the cooling system of a refrigerator make sounds that are completely normal.
You don’t notice these sounds during the day because there are a lot of other noises around you as well, such as TV, traffic, music, murmur, and similar. All of this masks the fridge sounds.
However, during the night, everything else gets quiet. This is the reason you hear your fridge only when you go to sleep. Some people actually like it – it can serve as a soothing background white noise.
If you are not a fan (pun intended), close the doors of the bedroom you sleep in so it blocks some of the sounds coming from your kitchen.
How To Properly Maintain Your Samsung Fridge
In order to avoid unnecessary costs and hurdles that come with a broken fridge, make sure that you maintain your refrigerator regularly. Here are some tips on how to do that according to Samsung’s user manual.
- Whenever something spills inside the fridge, clean it immediately. The longer you wait to clean it the more difficult it will get to get rid of the spillage and the smells that come along with it.
- Get rid of stale and bad food right away. No, you will not use a tomato that has been sitting in your fridge for more than three weeks. It will most probably rot and you will only have more work to do.
- Once a month do a deep clean of the fridge. Remove all the food and carefully wipe and disinfect the inside surfaces of the refrigerator. Put the food back and enjoy the spotless fridge.
- Get rid of the ice from the ice bucket occasionally. Don’t let the ice build up.
- Defrost your fridge approximately once a year according to the instructions from a bit earlier in the article.
Conclusion
Samsung refrigerators are one of the best options in the market. They look awesome and they are pretty reliable too.
If you notice that your Samsung refrigerator makes strange noise until you open the door, the problem most probably lies in the fan. You need to make sure that your fridge is levered, that the doors are properly sealed, and that the airflow is not obstructed.
If none of these is the problem, it’s best that you contact Samsung support or reach out to a nearby handyman. Avoid performing complicated solutions yourself so you don’t damage the fridge further.
Take good care of your fridge to avoid these types of problems. Read the manuals when you buy the fridge. Clean it regularly and act as soon as you think that something is wrong. The longer you wait the more damage can occur.

Is your refrigerator light out? Or does it have a leak?
We want to help. Let’s look at some reasons for door, light and leakage issues – and how to fix them.
Door issues
Doors not aligned
Door misalignment can result in improper closing or sealing of doors. This can lead to temperature
fluctuation and frost build-up.
Here are some reasons your doors could be out of alignment.
Refrigerator is not level
First make sure the refrigerator is on level ground. If not, you may need to use level shims. Use a
level to make sure the refrigerator is level all the way around. For more information on leveling, refer
to your refrigerator’s use and care guide.
Door storage
Adding food items to refrigerator doors will actually help to align them, as they’re built to adjust for
the extra weight added by food.
Doors are not adjusted properly
Instructions on door adjusting should be found in your refrigerator’s use and care guide.
Door is hard to open
Here are some possible reasons for this:
Door was just opened
When the door is opened, cold air flows out and warm, humid air flows in. When the door is closed, that
mixture of warm and cold air can create a vacuum. This is more likely to happen during the summer. If
the door seems stuck, wait a minute and then try opening it again.
Gaskets are dirty
This can keep the doors from opening and closing properly. It can also keep the doors from sealing. To
clean the gaskets, use warm water and a mild detergent with a sponge or soft cloth, then rinse and wipe
dry with a soft cloth. You can also rub a thin coat of paraffin wax over the gaskets after cleaning to
make sure they don’t stick again.
Light not working
Let’s look at some reasons this could be happening.
Door has been open for an extended period of time
If the door has been open for over 10 minutes, the interior lights may automatically shut off.
Door switch has not been activated
The switch is activated when the door is opened and closed. If the switch is not being engaged properly,
it could cause the interior lights to remain off. Make sure the refrigerator is level, doors are
properly aligned, and there are no magnets or electronic devices within three inches of the door switch.
The wiring harness has been unplugged
If the doors of your refrigerator were removed for moving purposes, check to make sure the wiring plug
is properly connected. You’ll find this under the top hinge cover. For complete instructions on how to
remove the hinge cover and the wiring plug, see your refrigerator’s use and care guide.
Refrigerator is in Sabbath mode
When this feature is selected, the control panel lights, interior lights, and control audio all turn
off, while the temperature set points remain unchanged. For most efficient operation, it is recommended
to exit this mode as soon as it is no longer required.
If Sabbath mode has been turned on accidentally, refer to your refrigerator’s use and care guide for
instructions on exiting this mode.
Bulb needs to be replaced
Most new refrigerators are equipped with LED light bulbs that don’t need replacing. However, if your
refrigerator or freezer compartment has a traditional light bulb, see if it’s loose in the socket and
needs to be tightened. If the bulb needs to be replaced, use an appliance bulb of the same size, shape,
and wattage.
Leaking
Is your refrigerator leaking? The problem is likely with the water filter. Check to make sure the
filter has been installed correctly and it’s not damaged. Also, keep in mind using a generic filter
instead of the recommended one could cause problems.
What to do if the refrigerator squeaks when the door is closed – LG MAGAZINE Russia magazine
Modern models of refrigerators have an audible signal that is triggered when the unit door remains open for a long time or is not tightly closed. But sometimes situations arise when the refrigerator refuses to work stably and for some reason beeps when the door is tightly closed.
To understand why the refrigerator beeps, you should consider the main reasons why this unpleasant sound occurs.
Temperature faults. If the refrigerator began to beep, there is a possibility that there was a failure in the temperature regime. This cause occurs when:
- warm foods are loaded into the freezer or refrigerator;
- Refrigerator door not closed properly;
- Complete defrosting of equipment has been carried out.
It is necessary to check that the doors of the chambers are closed tightly, to arrange the food correctly and to push the drawers. At the same time, it is recommended to look for the presence of debris between the seal and the body of the device.
If the appliance beeps after defrosting or because the refrigerator door is not tightly closed, the alarm will stop when the temperature in the compartments reaches the optimum level. If the refrigerator has not stopped squeaking within a day, you should turn off the equipment and call the wizard.
Operating heat leakage. During transportation of the appliance, due to deformation of individual areas of the evaporator and other damage, the refrigerator may leak refrigerant, the main working heat. As a result, the following happens:
- The device is losing freon.
- Compressor starts with shorter breaks.
- The system works without shutting down.
- Not enough heat is removed from the chambers, the temperature rises.
- Alarm sounds according to the control sensor.
- The refrigerator compressor stops turning on because there is practically no working heat in the system.
The repair is obvious: find the leak and repair the damage. After that, freon will begin to be pumped into the system.
Malfunction in the control system. The reason for the squeak of the device is sometimes a breakdown or malfunction of the control panel. A squeak is observed when dirt, dust and grease clog the space between the buttons. As a result, the control system does not work properly.
To prevent the refrigerator from sounding an alarm, wipe the control panel with a damp cloth soaked in soapy water. When the contaminants are removed, the control system should be checked for operability. After that, the squeak should disappear.
If the buttons work, the modes switch, but the sound remains, you should check the parameters of the set temperatures. When the quick freeze function is activated, the refrigerator will start beeping, so you need to turn it off to stop the beeping.
When the buttons on the panel do not respond, the wizard should be called. It may be necessary to change the board due to wear or water and dirt getting inside the electronic part. The cost of such repairs depends on the model of equipment.
Faulty compressor operation. If some model of the refrigerator began to squeak with the door closed, the reason may be the incorrect operation of the compressor. The device should turn off periodically, and not work constantly.
In this case, you should read the instructions and find out the duration of operation and rest periods of the compressor. When the unit does not turn off, this indicates a malfunction. It is difficult to identify the problem on your own. You will need to contact the service center and call the wizard. It may be necessary to completely replace the compressor, in some cases it is enough to supply new parts and refill freon into the system.
Temperature sensor failure. If the temperature sensor breaks down, the system does not receive correct readings – the refrigerator beeps. At the same time, cold is no longer produced in the refrigerator and freezer, but the motor is working properly. In some models of refrigerators, an error code is displayed on the display, an indicator flashes or an audible signal sounds. In this case, the repair consists in checking the temperature indicator and replacing it if necessary.
Leakage. Leakage is one of the most common accidents. If the refrigerator flashes and beeps, the cause of the malfunction may be the seal on the door. When the door is closed, a tight seal isolates the interior of the refrigerator from the air in the room.
During the operation of the device, grease gets on the seal, there are breaks and cracks, rubber changes its properties, deforms and coarsens. As a result, the refrigerator doors do not close tightly and warm air enters the refrigerator compartment.
You can check whether the door fits snugly against the refrigerator body using a plain sheet of paper. The procedure is simple: the sheet is inserted in different places of the fit line of the seal. Ideally, it should be pulled out with a force that is the same around the entire perimeter of the door. If this is not the case, it means that the rubber bands of the seal in certain areas do not fit, and the tightness of the chambers is broken. To prevent air from entering the unit when the door is closed, it is recommended to regularly wash the seals with hot water to restore the properties of the material. If there is damage on the rubber layer, then it is recommended to replace it entirely with a tight seal.
Incorrect drainage. The defrosting system of the refrigerator forms a thin crust of ice on the back wall of the compartment, and when there is too much ice, it turns on the evaporator. The accumulated frozen moisture thaws and is discharged from the main compartment through the drain tube into a container located near the compressor. With blockages, deformations of this part, a thick layer of ice may form on the walls of the refrigerator. The drain hole needs to be cleaned. Its incorrect operation causes insufficient removal of warm air and, as a result, the operation of an emergency sound signal.
Many models of refrigerators have the option to disable the sound of the alarm. This is, for example, a button with a crossed-out bell icon. But before you turn off the sound indicator, you need to make sure that all the systems of the device are working properly and it’s not a breakdown of the unit’s systems. How exactly the sound is turned off in a particular refrigerator model can be found in the operating instructions for the device.
TO OPEN THE REFRIGERATOR, A PENSIONER CONSTANTLY CALLS RESCUERS

The fighters of the search and rescue team in Mozhaisk, near Moscow, had to face a very curious client the other day. A local resident tortured rescuers with calls asking them to open the door… of the refrigerator!
As MK was told in the Mozhaisk PSO, a lonely 80-year-old pensioner is registered in one of the private houses in the district center. The elderly lady lives rather poorly and considers the ZIL refrigerator almost her main wealth. These refrigerators were produced back in the middle of the last century, and it was then that the unit came to the house of a citizen. A feature of the refrigerator is the presence of a lock in the door. Then, as now, the topic of food theft was relevant, and the lock allowed the owners of ZILs to somehow protect themselves from criminals. However, over the years the castle fell into disrepair. As a result, in the last month, my grandmother has already twice found herself in an absolutely hopeless situation: she was threatened with starvation, because all the food was in the refrigerator, and the door was jammed. After fruitless attempts to cope with the imperfect mechanism, the old woman contacted the local rescue service through the police.
PSO employees note that they have to deal with such an unusual client for the first time. True, after the second trip, they expressed extreme displeasure: after all, while the struggle with the refrigerator lock was going on, the help of rescuers might be needed for a much more serious reason. Nevertheless, the pensioner said that she had no money to buy a new unit, which means that she would disturb the rescuers more than once.
