Head-Up Display
Head-Up Display (HUD) is gaining more and more popularity. The undeniable advantages of this device are comfort and traffic safety. The system projects up-to-date information on the windshield of the car or a special screen, which is located in the driver’s line of sight and allows you not to be distracted from driving.
Head-up display came to the car from aviation. For the first time, the indication on the windshield was used by General Motors in 1988 year. In 1998, GM got its first color display. Since 2003, the head-up display has been installed by BMW. The HUD is currently used on many premium vehicles. As the cost of the technology becomes available for budget cars.
There are several types of projection display: regular. mobile, projection display based on a smartphone.
Head-up display is available as an option when purchasing a new vehicle. Structurally, it combines a projector, a projection system and a projection screen. A projector with high contrast and color saturation is used to form the image. It receives a signal from various vehicle systems: engine management, navigation system, night vision, adaptive cruise control, lane change assistance, traffic sign recognition, car audio system.
Projection system, consisting of mirrors and lenses, focuses the image on the windshield. The projection system allows you to adjust the position of the image on the windshield to the needs of a particular person. The projector together with the projection system is located in a recess above the instrument panel (torpedo) of the car.
The projection screen allows you to get a perspective image (virtual image), which reduces the concentration of the eye. There are two types of screens. The most common screen is a special transparent film pasted on the windshield and preventing the image from scattering. On Mini cars, a transparent screen is used instead of a film.
Depending on the design of the head-up display, different information is displayed on the screen:
- driving speed;
- crankshaft speed;
- navigation system instructions;
- speed limit signs, prohibition of overtaking;
- the presence of a car in the blind zone;
- the presence of pedestrians on the road at night;
- duplication of signal lamps of the instrument panel.
Due to the active development of the system, the list of information displayed on the screen is constantly changing.
The Mobile Head-up Display is a portable projector that is installed in a specific location in the vehicle and projects an image onto the windshield. For example, a Garmin projector is mounted directly on the dashboard, while a Pioneer device is attached to the sun visor. The video signal to the projector comes from a smartphone, which is connected via a Bluetooth wireless channel or USB cable.
The functionality of a mobile projection display is much less than a standard device. Basically, these are instructions for the navigation system, which must first be installed on the smartphone.
Navdy’s mobile head-up display offers more opportunities for the driver. The display can be connected to the driver’s smartphone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, as well as to the on-board computer via the diagnostic connector. In addition to instructions from the navigation system, the device can display information from vehicle sensors. The built-in infrared camera allows for gesture control of the display, and the microphone for voice control.
Even more simple head-up display based on smartphone. At its core, this is a special program that displays certain information (navigation, etc. ) on the smartphone screen. The smartphone itself is located on the instrument panel. The smartphone screen is reflected in the windshield, presenting visual information to the driver.
In conclusion, it should be noted that the technology of projecting information on the windshield of a car is only at the beginning of its development. In the future, Head-Up Display should become one of the components of the augmented reality system.

Projection screen for car
Every day, a device called “heads up display” or HUD is gaining more and more popularity.
The purpose of this device is to improve driving comfort and safety. The device projects up-to-date information from the on-board computer onto the windshield of the car or a special screen, which is located in the driver’s line of sight and allows him not to be distracted by the dashboard – all the necessary information is right in front of his eyes
- A revolutionary approach to navigation
- No need to take your eyes off the road
- Working with smartphones via bluetooth module
- Motion cues, audio and visual
- Traffic jam and speed limit warnings
- Easy installation in a car
Simple navigation without unnecessary details
Nowadays, car navigators are firmly entrenched in the lives of motorists, they coordinate the trip, warn of traffic jams, and can also act as a recorder or media player. Garmin, in addition to standard navigators, decided to please its fans with a different solution – simple, minimalistic and very fashionable – the Head-Up Display model, which does not take up much space on the dashboard (which cannot be said about ordinary navigators).
The principle of operation of this device is simple – it connects via bluetooth to your mobile phone based on iOS, on which you first need to install a special program, and takes data from it along the routes. Then it displays them on the windshield, on which it is necessary to glue a special film (it is on it that information will be displayed). Everything is simple, agree.
Please note that at present (until the new firmware is released) the device only works with Apple devices – check with operators for details.
Timely warnings about traffic jams
The program for a mobile phone is quite high-quality, and in addition to standard navigation functions it will offer tracking traffic jams, as well as speed limits – that’s why you will have the most up-to-date traffic information right on the glass car. In addition to visual coordination, the device will also notify with sound signals, as well as with voice, the volume of these notifications, of course, can be adjusted.
The Garmin Head-Up Display (HUD) navigation system has a few more “chips”, so it will prompt you to change lanes based on your route and traffic jams. In addition, the navigator will warn you about police radars, and if you exceed the speed limit, and all the displayed information will be perfectly visible on the glass, both in bright daylight and late at night
