Installing a Philips SoC Smart TV

This user manual will guide you how to install the NoviSign digital signage player app on most of Android based Philips smart TVs (also called “SoC” – System on Chip), such as D-Line, P-Line and Q-Line models.
Philips TVs are Android based and hence will used our Android player app. There is no Google Play store on Philips smart TVs, but there are 2 different ways to install the APK over Philips: 1. installing the APK directly from a USB stick; 2. installing the APK from Philips store.

    Installing from APK

    1. You can use the TV remote control ,but to make it shorter, better connect a mouse and a keyboard (mini BT keyboard with touchpad is even better), then turn on the TV.
    2. Follow the on-screen step-by-step instructions, for choosing language, etc.
    3. Please notice that the chosen TV input option of the Philips TV should be “Custom” (can be done using the TV remote control, using the arrow with the circle button).
    4. Once you’re done, you need to access the Android OS. In the remote control, click the home button and then press this sequence of keys: 1, 8, 8 and 8. This will enter the Android OS mode.
    5. Enter the Android settings, then “Date & Time” and set the right timezone.
    6. Exit the settings and open the Chromium browser (similar to Chrome) and download the APK file of the app from our download website (http://app.novisign.com/downloads/).
    7. Set the NoviSign signage app as a “custom app”. For that, enter the Android settings, select “Signage Display” -> “Custom App” -> “NoviSign Player”. Click the “Save” option. This sets the NoviSign app as the dedicated signage app, in order to be in “kiosk mode” (24/7 dedicated app).
    8. Exit the settings and click the NoviSign app. Enter the app’s settings by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen.
    9. In order to make sure the app auto starts in the all Philips models, set the “Restart on Inactivity” setting (under the “Play Mode” block of settings) to “on” and set the “Start Inactivity Interval” (you might be required to alter one of the Android security settings to allow that).
    10. Change the setting “Video to Video Transition” (under the “Display” block of settings) to “High Compatibility” to be suitable with the video handling of all Philips models.
    11. Right-click the mouse the exit the settings, then check the the “Start automatically…” checkbox and type the screen key of your screen (as it appears in your online Studio account) or login to your account (in the top right corner, you can log in to your Studio account, in order to be able to choose your screen, by clicking the magnifying glass icon, rather than just typing its screen key).
    12. Press “Go” to run your playlist. If it looks ok (after one cycle), access the app’s settings and change the “Display Notifications” settings (under the “Display” block of settings) to “off”. Exit the settings by right-clicking and then turn off and on your Philips display, using the remote control.

    Installing from Philips AppStore

    1. Follow the on-screen step-by-step instructions, for choosing language, etc.
    2. Please notice that the chosen TV input option of the Philips TV should be “Custom” (can be done using the TV remote control, using the arrow with the circle button).
    3. Once you’re done, you need to access the Android OS. In the remote control, click the home button and then press this sequence of keys: 1, 8, 8 and 8. This will enter the Android OS mode.
    4. Enter the Android settings, then “Date & Time” and set the right timezone.
    5. Exit the settings and click the “CMND & Deploy” app. This is an app to download apps from the Philips AppStore.
    6. On the screen there will be a QR code. Take out your smartphone and scan that QR code using a QR code scanning app. Let it open the URL.
    7. The URL is the Philips AppStore (https://app.cmnd.io). Login with you Philips username and password (if you don’t have yet, you’ll need to sign up), also use 310515 as the app code (the app to be downloaded).
    8. Once you’re logged in, click the “NoviSign Digital Signage” link under the NoviSign logo. A second after that, you’ll see a green message in the bottom for 2 seconds. It means that the app has started loading. At the same time, on the Philips TV, you’ll see that the NoviSign app is installing itself. When the installation process is over, you’ll find yourself in the entrance screen of the NoviSign app.
    9. Exit the app (Esc key, backwards or mouse right-click) back to the Android.
    11. Exit the settings and click the NoviSign app. Enter the app’s settings by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen.
    12. In order to make sure the app auto starts in the all Philips models, set the “Restart on Inactivity” setting (under the “Play Mode” block of settings) to “on” and set the “Start Inactivity Interval” (you might be required to alter one of the Android security settings to allow that).
    13. Change the setting “Video to Video Transition” (under the “Display” block of settings) to “High Compatibility” to be suitable with the video handling of all Philips models.
    15. Press “Go” to run your playlist. If it looks ok (after one cycle), access the app’s settings and change the “Display Notifications” settings (under the “Display” block of settings) to “off”. Exit the settings by right-clicking and then turn off and on your Philips display, using the remote control.

    Philips tips

    • If you’d like to get information about your Philips TV, such as model, firmware version, etc., just press, on your TV remote control, the Info button -> 7 -> 7. It will stay on the display for few seconds and then it will fade out.
    • Please notice that the B-Line series is totally different than the D, P and Q-Line series. This series has a different UI: Android TV UI. In order to access the professional Android settings menu (which has access to network settings, etc.), using your TV remote control, press: mute, arrow left, arrow right, arrow up, arrow down and OK. When you install the NoviSign app on this model, do it from the Google Play store, but from within the professional menu after creating a profile for the TV, otherwise, like in guest mode, in the next morning the app will disappear from the TV.

Philips TVs on Android TV: review and my review

Recently, I was choosing a TV for myself, to be honest, it was not an easy task. Of course, the main condition was the presence of Smart TV (well, how could it be without it :)). So, I noticed that I didn’t choose the TV as much as Smart TV. I searched, read on the forums, tried to understand from which manufacturer this function is still better. And only later, I thought about the diagonal, and some characteristics of the TV.

I mean that Smart TV is on TV, that’s all. I am sure that many, when buying a TV, choose the Smart TV system on which it works. There are plenty to choose from: Philips and Sony with Android TV, LG with WebOS, and Samsung with Tizen OS (these are the main ones I chose). In this article, we will talk about the well-known Android operating system, which has recently reached TVs.

Older Philips TVs from 2015 all run on Android TV (Lollipop 5.0). Well, Philips models of 2016 will of course work on OS Android. As you probably already understood, I bought myself a Philips TV on Android TV. For a very long time I chose between Philips and LG with their webOS 2. 0 system. TV model Philips 43PUS7150/12. But it is not important. I will make a general, small review of the Android TV system itself, and I will definitely leave my own review: what works, what does not work, what are the pros and cons. I have been using this TV for more than a month, and I managed to study and understand it. By the way, I use exclusively Smart TV itself, in our case Android, since I don’t have an antenna connected to the TV and there are no TV channels at all.

    Android TV review on Philips

    TVs

I’ll start with the fact that many, having heard about the Android system on the TV, immediately think that this is the same Android as they have on their phone or tablet. No, it’s not. In appearance, the system is different. There’s a new, thoughtful and designed specifically for large screens interface. Well, how do you imagine a regular Android on a TV? This is fu 🙂 And so, everything is very beautiful, simple and thought out.

When you turn it on for the first time, you will need to set up the TV itself: select a language, connect to a Wi-Fi network, etc. Perhaps later I will write an article on turning on and setting up the Philips Android TV for the first time.

After turning on the TV, just press the button Home on the remote control, and get into Android TV itself.

The entire interface consists of sections and tiles. Let’s start over: at the very top, a voice and text search button is displayed, as well as a clock. If your TV is connected to the Internet, recommendations will be displayed immediately below the search and clock. These are some applications, movies, videos from YouTube that Android thinks you might be interested in.

Next, we have the section Collection Philips . It displays recommended content by the TV manufacturer itself.

The next section is Appendix . Here are all the standard programs. Also, this section includes all the programs that you install from Google Play.

Below we have a separate section Games . All games installed from Google Play will be displayed there.

The last section is Installations . Internet connection settings, Software update, Application management, Help, sound settings, pictures, etc.

That’s actually the whole Android TV. I can say without a doubt that everything looks very cool and simple. The system is very convenient to use. Open the desired application and go ahead.

Separately, I would like to note the built-in support for Google Cast technology. With its help, from a tablet, smartphone, or computer, you can broadcast videos, music and photos to your TV. Very convenient, I use this feature often. I wrote more about Google Cast in the article: Google Cast on Android TV. What is it, how to set it up and how to use it?

    Android TV games and apps

Right after the purchase, many different applications are installed on the TV. Of course, you are unlikely to use all of them, but some are very useful: YouTube (looks cool, works well), Megogo (you can watch a lot of movies for free, or get a paid subscription to watch TV channels. The newest movies, so also paid), Media (watching movies and photos from USB drives, hard drives, or over a DLNA network), well, Google Play (for installing games and applications). It’s pretty much everything I use.

There is also a browser, it is simply called Internet . It works, it opens websites, but it is very difficult to control the remote control. I tried to connect a wireless mouse – it did not work. Hope they fix it. Kind of like Google bans the use of mice.

As for games, we install everything from Google Play. Already a lot of games familiar to us on phones are available on TV. The same Asphalt 8 works well. To control games, you can use a regular remote, or connect a gamepad, as I did. For games on Philips TVs with Android TV, I think I will prepare a separate article.

To store all games and applications, the TV has a built-in memory of 8, or 16 GB. Depends on the model. The memory can be expanded with a flash drive.

    Philips Android TV owner review

TV I have Philips 43PUS7150/12. There have already been two system updates, now I have Android 5.1. Hope there will be more updates.

I read a lot of reviews that when you first set it up, the TV just freezes and does not react to anything. Everything went well for me. I set it up, connected it to a Wi-Fi network, and immediately logged into my Google account.

Everything works, and works quite well. YouTube works without problems, movies go to Megogo without any problems. All games that I installed from Google Play also work without glitches and crashes. Movies from a flash drive and an external hard drive are played without problems. Including 4K (UHD) and 3D.

As with any device, there are downsides.

    • The TV hung and rebooted several times. Very rarely, applications crashed. I think the next software updates will fix this.
    • It is very inconvenient to view websites in a browser. It is inconvenient to control the arrows on the remote control by clicking on the links. Can’t connect to a wireless mouse.
    • The keyboard on the back of the remote control is not needed at all. It would be useful if there were Russian letters. But, they are not there. I don’t think that anyone uses this keyboard (this is a minus of the TV itself, not Smart TV).
    • In the YouTube app, there is no option to select a 4k video. Although, the same video on the computer is available in 4k. I think it will be fixed in the next updates.
    • I have already read several times that Android TV has multitasking. I didn’t find her there. If I watch a video on YouTube, go home, launch another app, and go back to YouTube, the home screen will already open. Yes, while watching a movie, you can press the Home button (probably in order to see the time), and return back to watching. But, it’s not multitasking. Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but I haven’t seen multitasking yet.

These are the minuses, it seems that I forgot to write anything.

Do I regret buying an Android TV? No. Everything I need, everything works. Maybe not as perfect as we would like, but it works. Moreover, Philips does not sit still, and they improve something all the time (software updates come). Yes, and I think there will be an update to Android 6.0.

Without a doubt, the Android system will develop on TVs. And most likely, in the near future, Android TV will be the most popular among other Smart TVs. Or maybe other TV manufacturers will switch to the operating system from Google. It’s Android, it’s everywhere 🙂
