Paradise on the verge of loss – iSport.ua
Every day we learn from the world news about a new explosion of violence in Latin America. From Mexico to Honduras, bloodshed has affected the lives of fans and even footballers. At the same time, Nicaragua has seen modest economic growth, relative safety, and a surge in interest and support for football. But what’s next?
Central America can be conditionally divided into two halves. In the northern part of the isthmus, Honduras and El Salvador have long had problems with violence, mainly due to gangs. In El Salvador, there are allegedly even more gang members than police and army officers combined. However, countries have passionate fans of football and clubs with a large number of socios. Field rivals Motagua and Deportivo Olimpia share and regularly fill the 35,000-strong Estadio Tiburcio Caryas Andino in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The Alliance Club plays at a full 44,000 in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. But, unfortunately, over the past few years, gangs have infiltrated the barrabravas of Motagua and Olympia. Violence threatens to spiral out of control.
Only last summer, after two years of negotiations, interference by organizations and the police, two groups signed a settlement agreement. Hope remains, but the power of bandits and poverty can reduce the significance of these pieces of paper. At best, this is a plaster on a purulent wound.
On the other side of the isthmus, Costa Rica and Panama boast relatively strong economies and a growing passion for football. After demilitarization decades ago, Costa Rica’s investments in health and education have paid off. Tikos have coped with inflation, reduced poverty and live with a relatively high GDP per capita. Panama has become a hotbed of capitalism and can enjoy a higher GDP than even Costa Rica. From a football point of view, Deportivo Saprissa and Alauelense dominate the Costa Rican league. Both those and others can boast of stadiums with a capacity of more than 15 thousand. Costa Rica entered the 2006 World Cup, and Uruguay itself did not let them into South Africa. In Panama, a professional league was founded in 1988 year. In both countries, the violence does not go beyond the football field.
Nicaragua is far from the north and south. Like their northern neighbors, the Nikas suffered a bloody civil war decades ago, and a 6.2 earthquake in 1972 destroyed the country’s capital, Managua. Recent government policies and corporate interests have created an unfavorable environment for growth. The legitimacy of the current president, Daniel Ortega, is rightly questioned, but, as in Spain under Franco, the dictatorship has produced some positive economic developments. Despite the global regression, Nicaragua’s economy has grown by 5% or more in the past two years. Significantly, it has moved away from total dependence on agricultural exports through increased tourism and manufacturing. Nicaragua remains the second poorest country in the Americas, but attracts multinational corporations with cheap labor.
Football has also blossomed in the last decade. This is a baseball place that was infected with a beautiful game primarily from Ronaldinho and cable TV. Today, Managua’s trendiest bars, the Zona Hippos, regularly show La Laga games to interested customers, with Barcelona and Real Madrid jerseys providing the backdrop. Two years ago, a new national stadium opened in the capital. Over 1,400 people on Facebook have “liked” FutbolNica, the premier site for local football. The Rojadirecta website provides links to the domestic leagues, although they are not always working.
The best clubs have exotic and some expensive foreign players from Honduras and Mexico. Real Esteli, based in the northern and mountainous city of Esteli, close to the Honduras border, regularly wins the domestic crown. He competed with dignity in the CONCACAF Champions League, being the only Nicaraguan representative on several occasions. Real Madrid lost 1-2 to MLS Toronto last summer. Not good, but not bad either. Deportivo Walter Ferretti from Managua regularly competes with Real Esteli for the top spots. We must not forget Dirianhen from Diriamba, who have won the league a record 26 times but have not won since 2006.
The Nicaraguan Premier Division has existed since 1933. It is partly due to FIFA for the recent growth and progress of local players. In 2001, the world organization opened a training center for the most talented in Diriamba, the spiritual center of Nicaraguan football. At the start of the decade, baseball rules the roost, but football is dominated by Dirianhen of Diriamba. In the 1990s, the sport spread to Estelí and Managua and began to grow there, forming the basis for FIFA’s investment. The center opened in 2001, and in 2009th team qualified for the Gold Cup for the first time, defeating Guatemala. But more recently, Nikas had only three victories in history. The best players tend to play in the main local teams – like Diriachen, Real Esteli or Walter Ferretti – but more and more often they move abroad. Some of them ended up in the main division of Puerto Rico and even in Brazil.
The economy and football have grown and the country is still pleasant and safe. There are separate gangs in Nicaragua, but they are still far from the organized crime of their northern neighbors. The Barrabravas have not yet fully formed there, but, unfortunately, fan violence has begun to manifest itself. 19February Real Esteli visited Managua and there they defeated Walter Ferretti in a tense 2:1 meeting. As they left the stadium, the victorious Estelians were fired upon with stones by the hosts’ fans. Allegedly, even aggression was directed specifically at the team coach. And there is no one to fear arrest and trial. Why?
It is disturbing that, according to FutbolNica, the police officers present at the incident did not want to intervene. The legal system does not inspire confidence. It is frightening that the police did not intervene in another context: political protests. The US State Department noted that the police are unable to protect political protesters. Supporters of the Ortega regime regularly attacked non-violent pro-democracy supporters and went unpunished. As in Iran and Venezuela, the police turn a blind eye to bloodthirsty militants. In 2010, the opposition party held a meeting at the Holiday Inn to avoid a confrontation with armed Sandinistas hiding in the streets near the National Assembly. What happened? The thugs came to them. And the police did not resist when the Sandinistas fired mortars at the hotel.
Daniel Ortega plays with fire. Like Franco in Spain, Ortega hired and legitimized the Juventud Sandinista (Sandani Youth), which is made up of gang members from poor neighborhoods. When the opposition announces their marches, mysterious buses arrive to pick up the gang members and transport them in order to form a strong counter-protest in support of Daniel. During the last election, Ortega rewrote the constitution, which now allows him to run for a second term. Then, on election day, formidable members of the Juventud Sandinista hung around the polling stations.
How long will this flame burn? And what will happen to the flourishing football? Elliot Turner, InBedWithMaradona
