Most modern phone charger cords end with a USB plug, meaning you’ll need a USB outlet to charge your essential devices. Switching out your standard wall outlet for a USB outlet can allow you to conveniently charge all your devices without having to dig for an adapter. Let’s review the ins and outs of this type of outlet to determine whether it’s right for your home.
What is a USB Outlet?
A USB Outlet is exactly what it sounds like, a wall socket that has a USB Port built in. Usually the outlet comes with two usual electrical outlets and two USB ports.
Since installing the outlet means dealing with electrical wiring, you want to hire a licensed electrician to handle the work.
Types of USB Outlets
USB cables come in many different sizes and shapes; the same is true for USB outlets. Here are the major designs you will likely encounter as you shop for new outlets. Keep in mind that there are many other types of USB cables, like USB-B and USB-B Micro, but these designs aren’t integrated within power outlets.
-
USB-A: This is the original USB connector and is still commonly found integrated within power outlets. These ports are flat and rectangular. USB-A cables connect to various devices, such as laptops, desktops, televisions, gaming consoles, and much more.
-
USB-C: Since arriving on the scene several years back, USB-C connections have blown up, thanks to ultra-fast charging speeds compared to USB-A. You can find these ports in smartphones, smartwatches, headphones, and other new gadgets. One nifty thing about USB-C is that the cables are reversible, so there is no wrong way to make a connection.
-
Lightning: This is Apple’s proprietary take on the whole endeavor, so you find these ports within iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices. Certain outlets are equipped with Lightning ports to accommodate Apple products.
Uses for a USB Outlet
Installing a USB outlet lets you charge a device, like a tablet or a smartphone, using the USB charging cord it comes with, without a power adapter or computer. These types of outlets are convenient to have in a place you frequently charge your devices like a bedroom or kitchen. Since not every electronic device is compatible with a USB outlet, it frees up your other outlets so you can plug in other things, like a lamp on your bedside table.
Plus, you can toss your USB charge adapters once you have USB-c outlets in your home. A bonus perk is that devices plugged into a USB outlet charge it up to 40 percent faster than using an adapter and a typical outlet.
Cost to Install a USB Outlet
Photo: Francescomoufotografo/iStock via Getty Images
Typically installing an outlet will cost you an average of $210, and range from $130 to $300. Because the outlet has the same amount of power as the typical outlet, installing a USB outlet will run you the same cost as a typical outlet.
If you are replacing more than one outlet at a time, the cost will be more. However, bundling electrical work can help you save on the labor cost of installing outlets and switches. Keep in mind that hiring an electrician costs about $50 to $100 per hour, depending on factors like job size, location, and number of tasks. Consult multiple electricians to get an accurate estimate of your electrical project cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
In the majority of cases, you can replace an outlet with a USB outlet. USB charging receptacles install in the same spot as standard outlets and any electrician worth their salt is more than familiar with the replacement process. Additionally, it’s possible to replace yourself, but only if you have prior experience with your home’s electrical system, as it requires handling of wires.
If it’s called a USB outlet without any further designation, it likely refers to a USB-A port. These are the original USB connections and are commonly integrated within power outlets. In recent years, USB-A cables have slowly been usurped by faster and more reliable USB-C cables. USB-C connectors are small and ultra-thin with a reversible design, while USB-A connectors are slightly larger and bulkier.
Poorly designed and incorrectly installed outlets can create an electrical fire hazard, as do some phone chargers and adapters that plug into these outlets. However, most outlets are perfectly safe as long as they remain in working condition. Keep an eye on what you are plugging into the outlet and stay alert for signs of outlet malfunction, like sparks, burning smell, or frequent circuit tripping.

Install a USB port in a car
Until recently, a USB port in a car was considered almost a luxury. There is no such connector in many modern models, not to mention cars manufactured 10-15 years ago. In this article I will tell you how to get 5 V for the USB connector from 12 volts of the on-board network.
Many people install various devices powered by the cigarette lighter in their cars – a video recorder, a GPS navigator, and from time to time you need to connect a charger for your phone. And since there is only one cigarette lighter socket, they buy a splitter, but this is not a way out, the wires stretching through the dashboard not only distract and interfere, they can cause an accident.
Typically, these devices are all rated at 5V (standard USB interface voltage), and a 12V to 5V converter is included in the plug of each of these devices. I suggest installing one 5 V power source in the car and powering all the necessary devices from it via USB, mini USB connectors.
Update from 07/30/2015.
The information from the article is still relevant now, but an alternative solution has appeared – ready-made USB adapters with a 12 V network connection. We are not talking about cigarette lighter adapters, they were on the market at the time of the first publication, but about independent converter devices.
USB adapter with two connectors and plug
The device consists of two modules. The case with an external thread is made in the form of a cigarette lighter cartridge and a USB adapter with two connectors is inserted into it. The manufacturer declares the following characteristics:
- Input voltage: 12 – 24 V;
- Output voltage: 5 V;
- Output current: 3 A.

USB adapter with two connectors, plug and indicator
The adapter has a removable flange with screw holes, which does not add aesthetics to it, but it can be installed without a flange. Please note that USB connectors have different output current. Characteristics:
- Input voltage: 12 – 24 V;
- Output voltage: 5 V;
- Output current: 1A; 2.1 A.

Rectangular USB adapter with two connectors, plug and backlight
Structurally, the adapter differs from its round counterparts, thereby complicating installation. But outwardly it has a pleasant appearance and should fit well into the interior of the car. Technical parameters:
- Input voltage: 12 – 24 V;
- Output voltage: 5 V;
- Output current: 3.
1 A.

These are the USB adapters currently available. They are easy to install. You can connect it to the cigarette lighter power circuit and, please, we have a full-fledged USB connector in the car. But there is a small nuance – these adapters do not have a separate (cable) 5 V output. This is important for permanently installed devices, for example, a DVR. Thus, the old part of the article has not yet lost its relevance. Reading!
Modellers use UBEC to power aircraft, auto and ship models. What it is?
UBEC Universal battery elimination circuit is a switching on-board power supply with 5 or 6 V output. Bought from HobbyKing. Also available on Parkflyer.
The TURNIGY 3A UBEC has thermal protection. The shielded housing serves to suppress interference. Has a high efficiency – 92%, the minimum difference between the input and output voltages is only 1.22 V.
The heart of this converter is the MP1593DN chip, the datasheet can be downloaded at the end of the article.
Specifications for the TURNIGY 3A UBEC converter:
- Input voltage: 5.5 – 23 V;
- Output voltage: 5 V or 6 V, selectable by switch;
- Output current: 3 A;
- Dimensions (LxWxH): 51×16.6×8.5 mm;
- Weight: 11.5 g.
This is how I received it (I already opened the bag, I couldn’t resist):
Included are instructions and, in fact, UBEC itself. For comparison, I put a USB flash drive next to it:
The jumper was already set to 5 V, there is a marking on the board how to switch the output voltage to 5 or 6 V. Let me remind you that we need 5V! The following two photographs show this marking. And also what is hidden under the screen. Thanks for these photos to Kirill Rodionov from the park flyer, I did not have to disassemble my converter.
For additional protection, if the converter suddenly fails so that there is no 12 V at the output, I installed a 1N4734 zener diode (datasheet at the end of the article): stabilization voltage 5. 6 V; dissipation power 1 W, stabilization current 45 mA. This set was bought on ebay:
The zener diode is connected to the circuit in parallel with the output, with the cathode to the plus “+”. The cathode on the zener diode is marked with a black strip:
We solder the zener diode, the red wire “+”, to it with a strip. Additionally, I soldered short conductors with a cross section of 0.5 mm 2 , then it will be easier to breed the circuit from them. Pre-dressed pieces of heat-shrinkable tube:
After shrinking individual pieces and a common tube dressed on a zener diode with a hair dryer:
USB socket.
I found a wonderful adapter on ebay – USB A Female to Mini USB B 5Pin Male left angle adapter. It has an angled mini USB connector on one side and a USB socket on the other:
With tears in his eyes cut it in half:
Photographs taken on different tables due to lighting.
Red wire is positive “+” and black wire is negative “-“. Just in case, I checked it according to the pinout of the connector:
I took the wire, taking into account its laying behind the decorative elements of the cabin. For the mini USB connector, the length of the wire is longer, because. The DVR is mounted on the top of the windshield. For a standard USB, the wire is shorter, I’ll put it somewhere on the dashboard, I haven’t decided yet.
I connected the wires, marked them so as not to get confused. Similarly, I put a heat-shrink tube on each conductor and on top of one common one:
We got two cables like this:
I soldered it, put it all together, observing the polarity. This is how the final version of the mounting kit looks like:
It remains only to install this design in the car, lay the wires and bring out the USB connectors in the right places. Be sure to connect through a fuse, you can through some regular from an irresponsible circuit.
Many DVRs have a function to automatically turn on and off on power on and power off. It is very comfortable. Therefore, if you connect the converter to the cigarette lighter circuit, then this function will work, because. The power supply to the cigarette lighter depends on the position of the key in the ignition switch. But in this case, for example, charging the phone from the new USB connector in the car will not be very convenient, you need the ignition key to be in the lock.
If this problem does not apply to you, connect the UBEC to the cigarette lighter circuit. Otherwise, connect to a circuit that does not depend on the ignition switch, and to keep the function of turning on / off the DVR, use an additional relay:
The diagram shows an automotive relay in the general case, but it can be without a quenching diode and without normally closed contact 87a.
To summarize. The TURNIGY 3A UBEC voltage converter is ideal for organizing USB connectors in the car. It is made qualitatively, corresponds to the declared characteristics at an affordable price.
This converter provides 3 A output, which theoretically allows you to connect up to six devices to it. According to the specification for the USB interface, the maximum current consumed by the device should be no more than 0.5 A, for USB 3.0 no more than 0.9A.
The TURNIGY 3A UBEC has been tested by user Bim_Sony.

How to connect a regular computer (PC) to a Wi-Fi network?
After installing a Wi-Fi router, many people have a question, how now to connect a regular desktop computer that does not have Wi-Fi to the Internet. Previously, the Internet was connected to the computer via cable, but now what to do? I do not really want to lay a network cable from the router to the computer. After all, we installed a router in order to get rid of the wires in the house.
Yes, after installing a router and setting up a Wi-Fi network at home or in the office, all laptops, tablets, phones and a number of other devices will be able to connect to the Wi-Fi network, “over the air”. These devices have a built-in Wi-Fi receiver. And if you also have a stationary computer to which you also need to connect the Internet, then there are only two options:
- Lay a network cable from the router to the desktop computer. But, this option is not often suitable, because you don’t always want to fiddle with cables, and sometimes it’s simply not possible to run this cable to a PC.
- Well, the second option, which we will talk about in this article, is connecting an external or internal Wi-Fi adapter to your computer. With it, a regular, stationary computer will be able to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi.
Exactly the same situation I encountered at home. After installing the router, all devices connected wirelessly. But I connected the computer that I had to leave via Wi-Fi using a USB Wi-Fi receiver. It is about these receivers that I will now tell in more detail.
It turns out that you can use an Android phone or tablet as a Wi-Fi adapter. Most likely you have such a device. You can use this solution. At least temporarily.
One important point: if you have an extra Wi-Fi router that is idle, then you can try setting it up as a receiver. It will receive a Wi-Fi signal from your main router, and provide Internet via cable to a desktop computer. For example, ZyXEL routers do an excellent job with this work. I wrote about setting up such a function on ZyXEL in this article. Other routers can be configured in bridge mode.
With the help of a Wi-Fi adapter, which I will discuss below, you can distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi. For example, you have cable Internet connected to your PC. We connect an adapter to the computer, and it can distribute the Internet to other devices. How to set it all up, I wrote in a separate article: https://help-wifi.com/nastrojka-virtualnoj-wi-fi-seti/nastrojka-tochki-dostupa-cherez-wi-fi-adapter-na-pk-s-windows-10/
As I wrote above, for ordinary computers that do not have built-in wireless network receivers, there are a large number of network adapters on sale. These adapters are both external and internal. As for the prices, they are not very expensive. Of course, there are different models, from different manufacturers. But, the cheapest one will cost you about 6-7 dollars (these are devices from popular manufacturers). Tenda has inexpensive models. For example, I also have an inexpensive, external USB Wi-Fi adapter TP-LINK TL-WN721N. It looks like this:
Works great. You will need to prepare instructions for setting it up on a PC. By the way, many people call such adapters “flash drives for connecting to Wi-Fi” 🙂
How to choose a Wi-Fi adapter for your computer: external and internal
Let’s see what these adapters are, and how to choose such an adapter for your PC. So, they are external and internal.
External adapters
Connected to the USB connector of the computer. To install it, you do not need to open the system unit, this is undoubtedly a plus. They look like ordinary flash drives. There are small ones, there are ones like in the picture above, and there are also antennas. I advise you to buy those with antennas if the Wi-Fi signal is not very strong in the room where you have a computer.
If you are not very computer savvy, I recommend buying an external Wi-Fi receiver. Almost anyone will do. The installation is not false: we connected the adapter to the USB connector of the computer, installed the drivers, and that’s it, you can connect to Wi-Fi.
Here, another photo of external adapters:
These devices have been dealt with. Go ahead.
Internal adapters
These adapters plug into the PCI (or PCI Express) slot on your computer’s motherboard. It is clear that to install such an adapter, you need to disassemble the system unit. Installation is also not difficult at all. They removed the cover from the system unit, installed the adapter in the PCI slot, rebooted the computer, installed the driver, and that’s it.
