Most modern phone charger cords end with a USB plug, meaning you’ll need a USB outlet to charge your essential devices. Switching out your standard wall outlet for a USB outlet can allow you to conveniently charge all your devices without having to dig for an adapter. Let’s review the ins and outs of this type of outlet to determine whether it’s right for your home.
What is a USB Outlet?
A USB Outlet is exactly what it sounds like, a wall socket that has a USB Port built in. Usually the outlet comes with two usual electrical outlets and two USB ports.
Since installing the outlet means dealing with electrical wiring, you want to hire a licensed electrician to handle the work.
Types of USB Outlets
USB cables come in many different sizes and shapes; the same is true for USB outlets. Here are the major designs you will likely encounter as you shop for new outlets. Keep in mind that there are many other types of USB cables, like USB-B and USB-B Micro, but these designs aren’t integrated within power outlets.
-
USB-A: This is the original USB connector and is still commonly found integrated within power outlets. These ports are flat and rectangular. USB-A cables connect to various devices, such as laptops, desktops, televisions, gaming consoles, and much more.
-
USB-C: Since arriving on the scene several years back, USB-C connections have blown up, thanks to ultra-fast charging speeds compared to USB-A. You can find these ports in smartphones, smartwatches, headphones, and other new gadgets.
One nifty thing about USB-C is that the cables are reversible, so there is no wrong way to make a connection.
-
Lightning: This is Apple’s proprietary take on the whole endeavor, so you find these ports within iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices. Certain outlets are equipped with Lightning ports to accommodate Apple products.
Uses for a USB Outlet
Installing a USB outlet lets you charge a device, like a tablet or a smartphone, using the USB charging cord it comes with, without a power adapter or computer. These types of outlets are convenient to have in a place you frequently charge your devices like a bedroom or kitchen. Since not every electronic device is compatible with a USB outlet, it frees up your other outlets so you can plug in other things, like a lamp on your bedside table.
Plus, you can toss your USB charge adapters once you have USB-c outlets in your home. A bonus perk is that devices plugged into a USB outlet charge it up to 40 percent faster than using an adapter and a typical outlet.
Cost to Install a USB Outlet
Photo: Francescomoufotografo/iStock via Getty Images
Typically installing an outlet will cost you an average of $210, and range from $130 to $300. Because the outlet has the same amount of power as the typical outlet, installing a USB outlet will run you the same cost as a typical outlet.
If you are replacing more than one outlet at a time, the cost will be more. However, bundling electrical work can help you save on the labor cost of installing outlets and switches. Keep in mind that hiring an electrician costs about $50 to $100 per hour, depending on factors like job size, location, and number of tasks. Consult multiple electricians to get an accurate estimate of your electrical project cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
In the majority of cases, you can replace an outlet with a USB outlet. USB charging receptacles install in the same spot as standard outlets and any electrician worth their salt is more than familiar with the replacement process. Additionally, it’s possible to replace yourself, but only if you have prior experience with your home’s electrical system, as it requires handling of wires.
If it’s called a USB outlet without any further designation, it likely refers to a USB-A port. These are the original USB connections and are commonly integrated within power outlets. In recent years, USB-A cables have slowly been usurped by faster and more reliable USB-C cables. USB-C connectors are small and ultra-thin with a reversible design, while USB-A connectors are slightly larger and bulkier.
Poorly designed and incorrectly installed outlets can create an electrical fire hazard, as do some phone chargers and adapters that plug into these outlets. However, most outlets are perfectly safe as long as they remain in working condition. Keep an eye on what you are plugging into the outlet and stay alert for signs of outlet malfunction, like sparks, burning smell, or frequent circuit tripping.

Who This Is For
These wall outlets with USB charging ports are for anybody looking for convenience and comfort while charging. Difference between 2.1, 3.1, and 4.1 USB
These numbers indicate the maximum power available in a particular USB port. A 2.1 USB, which is also indicated as a 2.1A USB, means a particular USB’s maximum power is 2.1 amps (A). They release sufficient power and charge the device more quickly. 2.1A is the charging rate of an iPad. A 3.1 USB has a 3.1A maximum power. A 4.1A USB indicates that the USB port’s maximum output is 4.1A. A 4.1A USB is faster than a USB port at 2.1.
Are USB charging ports on outlets safe?
This is one of the myths that need to be busted about wall outlets with USB charging ports. Yes, wall outlets with numerous USB charging ports are safe to use. They don’t put much load on the power source. They don’t draw more power or add to your electricity bill.
Why You Should Trust Us
Many wall outlets with USB charging ports marketed online are inferior in quality and don’t contain essential ports. We discovered the best wall outlets with USB charging ports that will serve you and your gadgets with 100% effectiveness. Don’t worry, you will learn more about how we picked these outlets in the next section.
How We Picked
We know that there are tons of wall outlets with USB charging ports on the market. Getting an excellent wall outlet with USB charging ports is a herculean and time-consuming task, thanks to the numerous inferior products out there. That’s why we decided to do the ultimate search for you. We consulted professional opinions from electricians, home decorators, and phone repair technicians. Their opinions set us on the right path. After that, we also checked users’ reviews to learn more about customers’ experience with these products.
Number of ports
Following these procedures, we had four powerful wall outlets with USB charging ports. We made certain that these wall outlets had plenty of USB charging ports. These ports are well placed so that when you plug in all of your USBs, they won’t touch. They discharge enough power to charge phones, laptops, and tablets. In terms of power, they are identical to standard wall outlets. These ports usually share the power and current that enter them. If you plug in two phones, they will share the current, but it will still be sufficient to power the phones efficiently.
Ease of use
These selected wall outlets with USB charging ports are easy to use and easy to install. They are versatile as you can place them anywhere. Anywhere you install them, they will give you comfort and convenience.
How We Picked
-
Number of Ports
We want you to ditch the conventional two-wall outlets. That’s why we chose wall outlets with multiple USB ports, including a USB C port. We also looked for outlets with well-spaced ports for convenience.
-
Power and Charging Strength
Wall outlets with USB ports are often underrated. The Leviton T5635 is an excellent wall outlet with USB ports that can charge at 30 watts from a single port.
There are other wall outlets with USB ports that provide enough power for power-hungry devices.
-
Convenience, Ease of use, and Placement
Wall outlets with USB ports can be installed anywhere, just like regular outlets. You can install these wall outlets in your bedrooms, kitchens, patios, and offices. However, you need to make sure that you have a regular outlet for power-hungry appliances.
-
Cost-Effectiveness
These wall outlets will significantly reduce the number of power adapters that you need to buy. Even better, they don’t cost much. Like any other electric appliance, we only reviewed reliable ones so as not to put your devices at risk.
Care and Maintenance
When using wall outlets with USB charging ports, do not leave them unattended for long. Do not let them overheat, as it may cause a fire. Also, do not let your device overcharge as it will affect your battery in the long run. Ensure that you do not plug in more than the capacity of a USB wall outlet. To save on electricity bills, only switch on the outlet when you want to use it.
Fire hazard safety advice
Before you plug in your cords, check them for any cuts or openings. Check the covers of the outlets for cracks. Most times, fire accidents occur because of naked wires that come in contact with each other. You can also suffer from an electric shock. Don’t overload these outlets. Always plug in or unplug slowly and safely.

USB Adapter Flipper-2 Multi-Flip – Trioma
Section 1. Description
Multi-Flip USB adapter is designed to play sound files from a Flash USB-carrier (hereinafter referred to as a flash drive) using standard car audio systems of BMW, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Volga Siber, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi, Volvo, which can control an external standard CD- or MD-changer and have an appropriate interface and connector for this (Fig.3.1-3.9). There is a platform for jumpers on the adapter case (on the side of the USB connector). They are installed depending on the specific car and radio. Attention: if the car (for example, in the trunk) has an external regular 6-disc CD changer or AUX, then it will have to be abandoned. The built-in CD player is retained.
Adapter features
Unlike similar third-party devices, the adapter allows you to create two levels of folder nesting on a USB flash drive (a folder within a folder) and conveniently switch between root and subfolders. A maximum of 1024 folders are available to the user (32 root folders and 32 more subfolders are nested in each of them), each of which can contain up to 99 files. Switching between two folder levels is not difficult, since folders and files are managed both traditionally using the disc and track selection buttons, and using the fast playback buttons, which at the same time do not lose their main function (the fast playback buttons are recognized by the adapter in two stages, their functions can be changed by the user – see Section 5, SETF setting).
Depending on the location of folders and tracks, the adapter will automatically select the optimal operating mode and the appropriate control method. The user can independently determine the desired way to manage folders and files by placing the Config folder on the flash drive (see Section 5).
The adapter remembers the current playback position to the nearest second in non-volatile memory and is able to continue sound playback both after a complete power off, and after removing and then inserting a flash drive (the so-called “pause mode”). This makes it convenient to use the adapter when listening to long files, such as audio books. The adapter always stores images of the last 4 connected flash drives in the internal non-volatile memory. Due to this, when any of them is connected, playback will occur from the same place in the track that was playing before the flash drive was disconnected.
The adapter software is stored in the internal Flash memory and can be updated by the user himself.
Supported formats and operation
The adapter supports MP3, WMA and AAC file formats. It connects to the interface of the external changer of the standard system of the car and emulates its operation, comparing files to tracks, and folders to disks.
Control commands
The adapter supports all commands and modes used by the factory radio when controlling the factory changer:
- sequential selection of folders / files forward and backward,
- direct folder/file selection,
- fast forward and reverse,
- scanning by folders / files,
- folder/file repeat,
- random playback throughout the flash drive / within the same folder,
- pause mode.
As well as additional commands:
- select the root folder;
- subfolder selection;
- jump 10 tracks forward;
- switching to AUX mode and vice versa.
Connectable accessories and connection variations
The adapter has an additional interface that, using the appropriate accessory, can be implemented to connect additional sound sources both without control (AUX) and with control (bluetooth device).
You can implement the following options for connecting devices:
- USB stick.
- flash drive and AUX at the same time, i.e. any audio source with a line output (for example, phone, tablet, etc.).
- flash drive and bluetooth device at the same time.
- flash drive, bluetooth device and AUX at the same time.
The special version of the adapter Multi- Flip (type BMW- DSP) does not have an additional interface. Accessories ( AUX, bluetooth module) are not compatible with this adapter version.
Section 2. USB stick. Folders and files
Valid flash drive format is FAT16 or FAT32 with a sector size of 512, 1024, 2048 or 4096 bytes. The volume is not limited. Playable files must be MP3, WMA and AAC. Valid file name extensions are mp3, mp2, mp1, wma, m4a, 3gp, mp4, asf. A flash drive can contain folders both with music files (hereinafter referred to as music folders) and without them. Music folders can be nested in two levels (folders and subfolders).
Up to 64 folders can be located in the root of the flash drive, of which no more than 32 can be music folders (Fig. 4.1). Each root music folder can contain up to 32 subfolders, all of which can be music. Each music folder or subfolder can store up to 99 music files. Files in the root of the flash drive are equated with the highest numbered root folder, and files in the root folder are equated with the highest numbered nested subfolder. Folders, subfolders and files are numbered according to their physical location on the flash drive. The later a folder or file was recorded, the higher the number will be assigned to it.
Section 3. Connection and operation
- Set the jumpers according to Fig. 1 (on the case next to the USB connector)
- MiniFit adapter (Fig. 2) connect to the adapter and the corresponding connector on the rear wall of the radio (Fig. 3.1-3.8).
- Connect the USB extension cable (included) to the adapter’s USB connector.
- If necessary, connect the accessory to the DIN-8 female connector (see Section 4)
Notes on connecting the MiniFit adapter to the radio:
- Mitsubishi (Fig. 3.7): when connecting the MiniFit adapter to the radio, do not interchange the “key” of the connector and the 13th contact. The black wire of the adapter is to the radio body (GND, ground).
- Mercedes Benz (APS BT/2) (Fig. 3.6): 8-pin MiniFit connector plugs into the upper left sector (the white connector mark must be on top).
- Volvo HU (Fig.3.8 and 3.9): connect the red wire of the MiniFit adapter to the “Batt” (+12V DC) contact – do not connect to the “ACC” (cigarette lighter, etc.). Black wire – with the “GND” (ground) contact or the radio housing.
- BMW (Fig.3.1-3.3). Depending on the vehicle equipment, one of the following options is possible:
Variant 1 (BMW 3+6). If the standard CD changer is connected with two connectors (3-pin and 6-pin, fig.3.3), then the MiniFit adapter is connected to these connectors (fig.3.2). The presence of the DSP function is not important. It is possible that there is no standard changer, but wiring with the indicated connectors is available.
Variant 2 (BMW-DSP_3pin). If the CD changer is connected with two connectors (3-pin and coaxial, fig.3.3), then the special Multi-Flip USB adapter (BMW-DSP) is required . Connect the coaxial connector of the adapter to the DSP block (black block in the trunk on the left side). Connect the 3-pin connector of the MiniFit adapter to the corresponding power connector of the CD changer (Fig. 3.2). Jumpers (Fig. 1) to the BMW-DSP position.
IMPORTANT!!! Some BMW vehicles are equipped with standard mobile phones. At the same time, the standard mobile phone connector looks similar to the power connector of a regular CD changer (3-pin in Fig. 3.2). At the 3-pin connector of the CD changer, a brown wire (minus) goes to the first contact (on the side of the key). Before connecting the 3-pin connector of our adapter, make sure that you are connecting to this connector. At the mobile phone connector, the brown wire is in the middle – DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONNECT THE ADAPTER TO THIS CONNECTOR!!!
Variant 3 – DSP If there is no changer wiring and there is a DSP function, then the special Multi-Flip USB adapter (BMW-DSP) is required . Connect the coaxial connector of the adapter to the DSP unit and connect 3 colored wires of the MiniFit adapter according to Fig. 3.1. Jumpers (Fig. 1) to the BMW-DSP position.
Variant 4 (BMW standard). If there is no wiring for connecting a regular CD changer and there is no DSP function, then the MiniFit-BMW_standard adapter is connected according to Fig. 3.1 to the radio (Business, etc.) or to the radio unit in the trunk (if there is a 16:9 or 4:3 monitor).
Audio jack MiniFit 10-pin adapter plugs into the lower left quadrant (Fig. 3.1). There is a white mark on this connector, it should be facing up (toward the pins). If there are 12 contacts in the sector, then it is connected with an offset to the right (i.e. 2 left contacts should remain free). To properly connect the audio connector, you must:
- pre-disconnect the power connector of the radio (radio unit),
- thread the 10-pin connector into the lower left sector of the block,
- install in the desired sector with the white mark up (taking into account the offset, if necessary),
- lock the power connector in place.
Adapter control
The adapter is activated when the standard external CD changer mode is selected (using the CD, DISC, MODE button, etc.). If the radio has a built-in CD player, then this mode can be activated by pressing the button twice. The startup time of the adapter depends on the number of folders and files and is usually less than 2 seconds when listening is resumed and up to 8 seconds when the ignition is switched on or the flash drive is changed.
After the start of playback, as well as after changing the folder/subfolder, the number of files in the current folder is briefly substituted into the track position on the standard display, after which the track position always displays the number of the current file.
The current music file starts playing automatically after the adapter starts from the same place where it was stopped earlier. When a file is finished playing, the next file in the current folder is automatically played. After the last file of the current folder is completed, the first file of the next folder is automatically started and so on until the last file of the last subfolder of the last folder, after which the first file of the first subfolder of the first folder is played.
The track control buttons always select a file in the current folder/subfolder. The fast forward and reverse playback buttons (FF and FR) have two functions:
- for short-term use (up to 2 seconds) switch subfolders forward and backward.
- when held, perform fast forward and reverse playback.
The assignment of the FF and FR buttons can be changed by the user (see Section 5, SETF setup).
Using the fast playback buttons to switch subfolders (even if they are combined with the track control buttons) is intuitive, since the adapter tells you when the button is released by the sound level difference.
The drive buttons can manage folders or subfolders depending on the adapter’s operating mode (see Section 6). The assignment of the “Disc+” and “Disc-” buttons can be changed by the user (see Section 5, SETK setting).
Operating modes
The adapter’s operating mode is determined automatically depending on the location of the music material on the USB drive.
Mode-1 (fig.4.2). Sound files are located only in the root folders, there are no nested music subfolders. All disk control buttons control root folders, and the factory display shows the number of the current root folder in the disk position.
Mode-2 (Fig.4.3) . Only one root music folder has been created, and there are several music subfolders in it. All disk control buttons control nested subfolders, and the factory display shows the number of the current subfolder in the disk position.
Mode-3 (Fig.4.4, 4.5) . Multiple Root Music Folders have been created with Music Subfolders. There are more than 10 subfolders in total. The sequential drive buttons (Drive+ and Drive-) switch root folders back and forth, and the direct drive buttons control nested subfolders (if a non-existent folder is selected when managing subfolders using the direct selection buttons, the next root folder becomes the current one). In addition, as in all other modes, it remains possible to switch nested subfolders forward and backward by briefly pressing the fast playback buttons. On the original display, the number of the current nested subfolder is displayed in the disk position.
Mode-4 (fig.4.6) . Similar to mode-3, but the total number of music subfolders is no more than 10. All music subfolders are numbered in a row without reference to root folders. The disk control buttons control subfolders, and the factory display shows the number of the current subfolder in the disk position.
Section 4. Adapter Auxiliary Interface, AUX
The Auxiliary Interface (DIN-8 female round connector) is made in the Alpine M-Bus standard. You can directly connect any device with a similar interface to it (for example, the Alpine CHM-S630 CD changer) or one of the following accessories manufactured by Trioma LLC (purchased separately):
1) 3.5mm mini jack adapter for AUX – to connect any audio source with a line output (eg telephone). When listening to music from an audio source, the radio displays information about what the CD6 Track88 is playing.
2) Bluetooth BMT-2.1 module – for wireless device connection, e.g. phone use. At the same time, information about what CD2 Track51 is playing is displayed on the radio display.
Activation methods – remove the flash drive from the USB connector or enable and disable the Repeat, Scan or Random function within 3 seconds (see Section 5, SETA setting).
With special adapter version Multi – Flip (type BMW – DSP 9007 4 ) there is no additional interface. Accessories ( AUX , bluetooth module) are not compatible with this adapter version.
Accessories for USB adapters
Section 5. “Config” folder
The user can independently change the adapter operation algorithm or some playback parameters. To do this, you need:
– in the root of the flash drive, create a folder named CONFIG (or Config, or config).
– create nested folders with special names in it. Each subfolder corresponds to a specific setting (see below).
In the Config folder (fig.4.7) you can describe both one and several settings, but each of the settings can be present only once. Settings apply only to the flash drive on which they are created. If there is no Config folder or if there is no folder (or folders) with settings in it, the default settings are used.

“SETA” setting Sets the switching mode between USB connector and auxiliary interface/AUX
Folder name Description SETA=1 The “SCAN” function must be enabled and disabled within 3 seconds. SETA=2 Default. The “RPT” (repeat, repetition) function must be turned on and turned off within 3 seconds. SETA=4 The “RND” function (random, mix, random playback) must be turned on and turned off within 3 seconds. SETA=0 Switching to AUX and back using the buttons is not possible Summation of parameters is allowed. So, with SETA=7, the transition to AUX and back is possible with any of the listed functions (Random, Repeat, Scan).

Setting “SETF” to add functionality to the fast playback buttons FF and FR
Folder name Description SETF=0 The FF and FR buttons perform the classic fast forward and reverse function within a track. SETF=1 Default. The FF and FR buttons have a dual function:
– short-term activation (up to 1.5 seconds) – this is “Subfolder +” and “Subfolder -“,
– when held, these are fast forward and reverse commands.SETF=2 The FF and FR buttons are the “Subfolder +” and “Subfolder -” commands. SETF=3 – short-term activation (up to 1. 5 seconds) – these are the commands “Subfolder +” and “Subfolder -“, respectively,
– when held, they switch “Folders” (in the root directory), respectively, forward and backward.
This allows, using the same buttons, to switch both on the first level of the catalog and on the second.SETF=5 – short-term activation of FF – command “Subfolder +”, and when held – fast forward playback.
– short-term activation of FR – the command “Root folder +”, and when held – fast playback backwards.SETF=6 The FF and FR buttons are “Subfolder +” and “Root Folder +” respectively. SETF=7 – short-term activation FF – command “Root folder +”, while holding – fast forward playback.
– short-term activation of FR – the command “Root folder -“, while holding – fast playback backwards.When setf=1, setf=3, setf=5 or setf=7, where a short press and a long press have different results, the adapter prompts the user when the button is released by a sound level difference.

Setting “SETT” to change the algorithm for switching tracks
Folder name Description SETT=0 – “Track +” from the last file will switch to the 1st file of the same folder,
– “Track -” from the 1st track will switch to the last track in the same folder.SETT=1 – “Track +” from the last file will switch to the 1st track of the next folder,
– “Track -” from the 1st track will switch to the last track of the previous folder.SETT=2 When this function is set, 10-track forward switching mode is available. To do this, you need to roll back the track to the beginning (using the “Track -” button) and immediately perform “Track +”. After that, each subsequent use of “Track +” switches 10 tracks forward. To exit the mode, leave the buttons alone for two seconds. SETT=3 – simultaneous activation of the functions specified in SETT=1 and SETT=2. -
Setting “SETK” to change the assignments of the “Disc +” and “Disc -” buttons
Folder name Description SETK=0 Subfolder forward/Subfolder backward SETK=1 Subfolder Forward/Root Folder Forward SETK=2 Root folder forward/Subfolder forward SETK=3 Root folder forward/Root folder backward -
Setting “SETS” settings for some BMW and Mazda vehicles
Folder name Description SETS=1 SETS=2 SETS=3 SETS=4 SETS=8 Only for BMW – it is possible to display the names of folders and files in text form on the standard car display or instrument panel. Permissible values (depending on the car model and radio) are indicated on the left. Due to the peculiarities of the interfaces of various BMW head units and the lack of a clear classification, we recommend that you set the parameter that suits you by enumeration.
A guard interval against false folder switches is configured for Mazda.
Most of Mazda’s stock radios have the features of external changer and adapter control.
- Sequential disc/track selection commands in such devices are converted into direct disc/track selection commands. That is, if you press “Track+” with the current track 14, then not the “Track+” command will appear on the external control bus, but the recalculated command for the direct selection of the track “Track15”. The same recalculation occurs in disk management. This feature imposes restrictions on the “SETT” and “SETK” commands and affects switching subfolders from the first back and from the last forward.
- Often, in Mazda radios, disk / track control commands are duplicated (two or three commands may appear on the control bus with one button press), that is, when the adapter is working, several folder switching may occur instead of one.
The Multi-Flip adapter (Mazda) has a guard time to prevent false folder switches, which is activated after each disk/folder switch command and does not miss duplicate commands. The guard time in the adapter is initially set to 4 seconds. Thus, after any pressing of the disk selection button, both false and any other disk selection commands will be ignored within 4 seconds.
The interval can be changed by the user using the SETS setting
SETS=0 – 4 seconds (default)
SETS=1 – 2 seconds,
SETS=2 – 6 seconds,
SETS=3 – 8 seconds
- For some Mazda radio models it is necessary to generate additional messages about the number of tracks in the folder. If the adapter does not generate such messages, then the radio may assume that there is only one track in the folder and will not switch tracks. The adapter is initially configured to generate additional messages about the number of tracks after each track switch. If these additional messages cause a momentary muting of the sound after each track switch, then they can be turned off with the SETS setting:
SETS=0 – additional messages enabled (default)
SETS=4 – additional messages disabled.
If you want to change both the time interval and the status of additional messages about the number of tracks at the same time, then the selected values for the “SETS” parameter must be summed up. For example, if “SETS=2” is required to set the guard interval to 6 seconds, and “SETS=4” is required to turn off additional messages, then “SETS=6” is required to perform both of these settings.

Install a USB port in a car
Until recently, a USB port in a car was considered almost a luxury. There is no such connector in many modern models, not to mention cars manufactured 10-15 years ago. In this article I will tell you how to get 5 V for the USB connector from 12 volts of the on-board network.
Many people install various devices powered by the cigarette lighter in their cars – a video recorder, a GPS navigator, and from time to time you need to connect a charger for your phone. And since there is only one cigarette lighter socket, they buy a splitter, but this is not a way out, the wires stretching through the dashboard not only distract and interfere, they can cause an accident.
Typically, these devices are all rated at 5V (standard USB interface voltage), and a 12V to 5V converter is included in the plug of each of these devices. I suggest installing one 5 V power source in the car and powering all the necessary devices from it via USB, mini USB connectors.
Update from 07/30/2015.
The information from the article is still relevant now, but an alternative solution has appeared – ready-made USB adapters with a 12 V network connection. We are not talking about cigarette lighter adapters, they were on the market at the time of the first publication, but about independent converter devices.

These are the USB adapters currently available. They are easy to install. You can connect it to the cigarette lighter power circuit and, please, we have a full-fledged USB connector in the car. But there is a small nuance – these adapters do not have a separate (cable) 5 V output. This is important for permanently installed devices, for example, a DVR. Thus, the old part of the article has not yet lost its relevance. Reading!
Modellers use UBEC to power aircraft, auto and ship models. What it is?
UBEC Universal battery elimination circuit is a switching on-board power supply with 5 or 6 V output. Bought from HobbyKing. Also available on Parkflyer.
The TURNIGY 3A UBEC has thermal protection. The shielded housing serves to suppress interference. Has a high efficiency – 92%, the minimum difference between the input and output voltages is only 1.22 V.
The heart of this converter is the MP1593DN chip, the datasheet can be downloaded at the end of the article.
Specifications for the TURNIGY 3A UBEC converter:
- Input voltage: 5.5 – 23 V;
- Output voltage: 5 V or 6 V, selectable by switch;
- Output current: 3A;
- Dimensions (LxWxH): 51×16.6×8.5 mm;
- Weight: 11.5 g.
This is how I received it (I already opened the package, I couldn’t resist):
Included are instructions and, in fact, UBEC itself. For comparison, I put a USB flash drive next to it:
The jumper was already set to 5 V, there is a marking on the board how to switch the output voltage to 5 or 6 V. Let me remind you that we need 5V! The following two photographs show this marking. And also what is hidden under the screen. Thanks for these photos to Kirill Rodionov from the park flyer, I did not have to disassemble my converter.
For additional protection, if the converter suddenly fails so that there is no 12 V at the output, I installed a 1N4734 zener diode (datasheet at the end of the article): stabilization voltage 5.6 V; dissipation power 1 W, stabilization current 45 mA. This set was bought on ebay:
The zener diode is connected to the circuit parallel to the output, with the cathode to the plus “+”. The cathode on the zener diode is marked with a black strip:
We solder the zener diode, the red wire “+”, to it with a strip. Additionally, I soldered short conductors with a cross section of 0.5 mm 2 , then it will be easier to breed the circuit from them. Pre-dressed pieces of heat-shrinkable tube:
After drying individual pieces and a common tube, dressed on a zener diode:
USB socket.
I found a wonderful adapter on ebay – USB A Female to Mini USB B 5Pin Male left angle adapter. It has an angled mini USB connector on one side and a USB socket on the other:
With tears in his eyes, cut it in half:
Due to lighting, the photos were taken on different tables.
Red wire is positive “+” and black wire is negative “-“. Just in case, I checked it according to the pinout of the connector:
I took the wire, taking into account its laying behind the decorative elements of the cabin. For the mini USB connector, the length of the wire is longer, because. The DVR is mounted on the top of the windshield. For a standard USB, the wire is shorter, I’ll put it somewhere on the dashboard, I haven’t decided yet.
I connected the wires, marked them so as not to get confused. Similarly, I put a heat-shrink tube on each conductor and on top of one common one:
We got two cables like this:
I soldered it, put it all together, observing the polarity. This is how the final version of the mounting kit looks like:
It remains only to install this design in the car, lay the wires and bring out the USB connectors in the right places. Be sure to connect through a fuse, you can through some regular from an irresponsible circuit.
Many DVRs have a function to automatically turn on and off on power on and power off. It is very comfortable. Therefore, if you connect the converter to the cigarette lighter circuit, then this function will work, because. The power supply to the cigarette lighter depends on the position of the key in the ignition switch. But in this case, for example, charging the phone from the new USB connector in the car will not be very convenient, you need the ignition key to be in the lock.
If this problem does not apply to you, connect the UBEC to the cigarette lighter circuit. Otherwise, connect to a circuit that does not depend on the ignition switch, and to keep the function of turning on / off the DVR, use an additional relay:
The diagram shows an automotive relay in the general case, but it can be without a quenching diode and without normally closed contact 87a.
