You can easily insert a special character, fractional part, or other character in PowerPoint presentations and Excel workbooks.

The most important thing to understand is that when inserting symbols, fractions, special characters, or international characters, the font you use is critical. Not all fonts have the same characters. For example, the Humä font does not have fractional characters, while Verdana does not. Thus, it is very important to use the correct font in order to find the right symbol or sign that you need.

1. Place the cursor at the location in the file where you want to insert the character.

   Different font sets often contain different characters, and the most commonly used characters are contained in Segoe UI Symbol font set . Use the Font selector above the character list to select the font you want to view.

5. When you find the symbol you want, double-click it. The symbol will be inserted into the document.

6. Select Close .

Tip: If you want to make your character larger or smaller, select it and use the Font Size option.

   Tip: Many special characters have keyboard shortcuts associated with them. If you want to insert a special character again in the future, just press the keyboard shortcut. For example, the keyboard shortcut ALT + CTRL + C inserts the copyright symbol (©).

Some fractions (1/4, 1/2 and 3/4) are automatically replaced with the corresponding symbols (¼, ½, ¾) when you type. However, the others remain the same (1/3, 2/3, 1/5, etc.), so if you want to paste them as characters, you will need to use the character paste process.

3. From the Subgroup drop-down list, select Numeric Forms .

   Note: Not all fonts have a number form subgroup. If you don’t see the subset of number forms that is available for your font, you must use another font, such as Calibri, to insert the fraction symbol.

4. Double-click the fraction you want to insert.

5. Select Close .

Only a small number of common fractions have characters that can be replaced. For more unusual fractions, such as 8/9, you can determine the approximate value of a character by setting the numerator as superscript and the denominator as subscript. If you plan to enter text in other languages, we recommend that you switch the keyboard layout to the selected language. For more information, see Turn on or switch the keyboard layout language.

There are almost always keyboard shortcuts for individual characters in Office. For example:

• CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+? serves to insert ¿

• CTRL + SHIFT + ~: Inserts ã after typing “a”.

• CTRL+SHIFT+: Inserts ü after entering “u”.

You can also enter a character code using the keyboard. Symbols and special characters are inserted using ASCII or Unicode codes. When looking up the code for a character, you can determine which one.

2. Scroll up or down the list to find the character you want; note that a font or subset change may be required to find it.

   Tip: The Segoe UI Symbol font has a very large selection of Unicode characters to choose from.
