Mexican police, together with the military, arrested the son of notorious drug lord El Chapo (Shorty) at dawn on Thursday in the city of Culiacan, Sinaloa state. Mexican Defense Minister General Luis Cresensio Sandoval stated that before Ovidio Guzmán-López’s arrest, he was under covert surveillance for six months.

Guzmán-López has been charged with leading a branch of the Sinaloa drug cartel, founded by his father, according to Mexico’s defense minister. This is one of the world’s largest underground organizations involved in the production, smuggling and drug trade.
Sandoval also clarified that the operation to capture the drug lord was carried out with the support of the US authorities, and now the criminal is being held in a safe place in the capital of Mexico City.
After it became known about the arrest of the drug lord, riots broke out in the city, shooting began, cars on the streets caught fire. Videos of burning buses blocking roads are circulating on social media.

Mexican airline Aeromexico reported that gunfire hit the fuselage of its aircraft Thursday morning as it prepared to fly from Culiacan to Mexico City. The company claims that none of the passengers and staff were injured, however, in a video circulated on social networks, people sitting on the plane squeezed into their seats and lay down on the floor.
After that, the airport was closed, and local authorities circulated a notice on social networks that educational and administrative activities in Culiacan were temporarily suspended.
Earlier, the mayor of Culiacan, Juan de Dios Gamez, confirmed on Twitter that the military had been carrying out a special operation since dawn, and many areas of the city had been cordoned off. He asked residents not to leave their homes.
The arrest of the drug lord and the riots in Culiacan occurred on the eve of a visit to Mexico by US President Joe Biden, who will take part in the summit of North American leaders, which opens in Mexico City next week.

In 2019, Mexican authorities had already arrested Guzmán-López, but were forced to release him in order not to provoke him supporters to violence.
The US Department of State believes that Ovidio and his brother Joaquin own at least 11 methamphetamine labs in the state of Sinaloa, producing between 1,300 and 2,200 kg of drugs per month.
Washington also alleges that Guzmán-López gave orders to kill informants, smugglers who didn’t please him, and even a popular Mexican singer who refused to sing at his wedding.
In December, the US offered a $5 million reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Ovidio and his three brothers, who are believed to continue to run the gang after their father, El Chapo, was imprisoned.
Shorty himself is serving a life sentence in the USA. In 2019he was found guilty of drug smuggling and money laundering.

She is accused of helping her husband run the Sinaloa drug cartel. The FBI alleges that Aispuro was involved in cocaine smuggling into the US and orchestrated El Chapo’s escape from a Mexican prison in 2015.
The trial date has not yet been set. If Emma Aispuro is found guilty, she faces a term of up to life.
Joaquin Guzmán, 64, is currently serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado.
The story of Emma Aispuro is deeply personal. It included a cheating husband, a dramatic meeting with his mistress, and crimes. But it sheds light on the closed world of drug cartels and the fate of the women involved.
Leaving aside the question of her guilt or innocence, drug analysts say Aispuro’s place and role is atypical. She was a public figure, entrepreneur and gatekeeper at the same time, deciding who got access to El Chapo and who didn’t.
Usually the wives of drug dealers are only sexual and do not influence anything, says Cecilia Farfan-Mendez of the University of San Diego. Aispuro was different.
“She showed that in this world, too, a woman can achieve power,” the expert notes.
But power in the cocaine cartel is a risky business.
“In this business, you’re either caught or killed in the end,” says Derek Maltz, a former US DEA special agent.

Emma Aispouro has been touting her plans for a fashion house, but federal investigators have closed the ring around her.
As Derek Maltz put it, “her world was falling apart and the walls were crumbling.”
Murders and kidnappings
During the breaks in the El Chapo trial the year before last, Emma Aispuro used to dine on salads at the Brooklyn Court Café, chatting and exchanging jokes with friends.
“She’s an extraordinary person,” says lawyer Miro. “The Emma I know is always full of energy, always cheerful.”
Emma Aispuro, a dual citizen of Mexico and the United States, met Guzmán when she was 17 years old. They soon got married. They had two twin boys – Maria Joaquin and Emali.
During the three-month trial of her husband, she was in the hall almost every day, and during breaks she ran around the marble-lined corridors in high heels.

With bright red lipstick, studded with diamonds, in tight jeans, she embodied the image of “buchona” – a drug dealer’s girlfriend.
“The Goddess of Sinaloa,” says Romain Le Cour Grandmaison, a Paris-based security specialist who traveled to Mexico to study local drug cartels.
Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera of George Mason University also investigated the activities of the Sinaloa cartel, whose center was the city of the same name.
“They wear expensive clothes and Louis Vuitton bags and get plastic surgery. Everything is over the top,” Correa-Cabrera explains the concept of “buchona”.

According to the expert, El Chapo’s wife was especially proud of her butt, which she called “exceptionally magnificent.”
This glamorous look contrasted sharply with the grim everyday life of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Since 2006, when the Mexican government declared war on the drug cartels, more than 300,000 people have been killed there.
Guzmán’s victims included both rivals and those close to him who somehow didn’t please him.
The body of one of his mistresses was found in the trunk of a car. She is believed to have been killed by members of a rival gang.

The price of fidelity
Guzmán’s lover Lucero Guadalupe Sanchez Lopez testified against him in a US court. She was arrested in June 2017 near the US-Mexico border in a drug case. She faced a 10-year prison sentence.
A mother of two pleaded guilty and made a deal with justice.
She appeared in the courtroom in a blue prison uniform and spoke about her relationship with Guzmán and how he ran the cartel. She had a nervous tic and was constantly blinking.
El Chapo showed impatience during the performance of his ex-girlfriend and did not take his eyes off the wall clock.
