9000 2 What is Nextbase 512GW?
512GW is a mid-range dash cam from Nextbase, a company established in 1999 to import portable entertainment systems from China. Since then, Nextbase has developed a fairly large range of dash cams, so it’s surprising that this is our first experience with the brand in this area, although we’ve come across other products from the company, such as the Walking Cinema portable DVD player. .

Nextbase 512GW – Specifications and Windshield Mounting
Nextbase dash cams are readily available from Halfords and are claimed to be AA approved, so it’s no wonder the spec and build makes a promising start. The sensor inside is a Sony Exmor R unit, although there is no indication of size or resolution. At least there are enough pixels to record 1440p (2560 x 1440) at 30 frames per second.
Full HD (1920 x 1080) recording at 60 frames per second is also possible. You can also select Full HD and 720p at 30fps. At maximum resolution, video is recorded at 27 Mbps, so a 16 GB memory card will last for 77 minutes of footage, after which recording cycles will replace old files with new ones. As usual, there’s a microSD for storage, but there’s none in the box – a shame for a dash cam that’s way over the budget. 9The 0043
512GW is one of the first dash cams I’ve seen that seriously considers the speed at which it can be installed and removed in a car. The system is not as slick as the magnetic mount used on TomTom satnavs, but it remains user-friendly. The DVR is inserted into the mount, which contains the power connectors.
Mount includes a mini-USB connector that can be connected to a long car power cable. Unfortunately, there’s a non-removable car cigarette lighter adapter on the other end, so you won’t be able to easily connect the 512GW and sat nav to a car power source – unless your car has a USB connection and sat nav can’t be used. this.
Nextbase offers two mounting options in the box: suction cup or adhesive pad supplied by 3M for a stronger connection. It’s nice to have both. However, only one quick-release mount is included; you will have to attach the ball joint to whatever screen mount you decide to use.
Nextbase 512GW – Menus and Manual Settings
The back of the 512GW is dominated by a 3-inch LCD screen with touch buttons at both ends. There is a clearly labeled menu button that loads the video settings. You can change the resolution as well as change the exposure from +2 to -2 in five steps.
You can enter your license plate so that it can be placed on the video frame. Other additional information that can be added is the time and date, speed, GPS location, and dash cam model number. All of them are displayed at the bottom of the frame.
Cycle length can be set to two, three or five minutes. There is a frame-by-frame option with three minutes or two hours between frames, which is a rather odd choice. Perhaps it would be useful to have some intermediate options. You can enable parking mode when the 512GW is in standby mode and record a two-minute video every time it detects physical movement.
You can also rotate the display if you want to mount the camera upside down, although the menu buttons remain in place. The G-sensor can be set to high, medium or low, or disabled. This will detect sudden motion indicating an incident and mark the current video as emergency, preventing it from being overwritten.
There is also a photo mode that you can select instead of video mode. This captures images at a resolution as low as 1920 x 1080. You can take pictures using the Record/OK button on the right side of the screen. This can be a useful feature if you need to take several pictures of the damage at the scene of an accident, although the resolution of the images is not very high.
Nextbase 512GW – Additional Security Features
As you’d expect from a £150 dash cam, it has built-in GPS so your location is saved along with the video. You can then view your footage using the Nextbase Replay 3 software, available for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, as well as macOS. This will show the journey on the map during video playback as well as G-sensor information.
However, despite the inclusion of GPS, it is not possible to locate the security cameras. Forward collision detection and lane departure warning are also missing. I expected such features from a dash cam at this price. You get an additional mini-USB to connect a rear camera, although Nextbase doesn’t currently offer such a device in its range. The mini-HDMI output allows you to view video from the DVR on a large screen.
One of the fancy features that is included is Wi-Fi. You can set up the 512GW as a hotspot, connect to it from your smartphone, and then use the Nextbase Cam Viewer software for iOS and Android to access the videos recorded on the dash cam. It doesn’t give you the ability to change camera settings, but it does allow you to view live, start recording and upload videos to your smartphone for sharing, and view any videos you’ve already downloaded. However, it does not include the ability to view video along with GPS information.
Nextbase 512GW – Image Quality
Nextbase may not offer many advanced features, but it delivers on the most important area: image quality. Healthy bit rates and Full HD resolution deliver footage with accurate colors and artifact-free footage. This is more than a task to provide a useful overview of the road ahead in case you need video evidence of an incident.
Here is a sample frame from the Nextbase 512GW.
These are a couple of photographs taken with a camera.
Again, decent enough quality for Full HD, but it’s a shame they don’t use the full resolution that the 512GW can shoot in video mode.
Should I buy the Nextbase 512GW?
The Nextbase 512GW is a well built unit and the quick release system is a blessing. Image quality is close to the top level of modern DVRs. It’s a shame that the photos are only in Full HD and that there are a few extra security features built in. But with GPS capability, Wi-Fi, and the ability to view videos along with the location on a map using the Nextbase software, it will do the job well. as a personal vehicle surveillance device.
Verdict
The Nextbase 512GW offers good picture quality, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, but lacks some of the most advanced DVR security features.

Nextbase 522GW offers Nextbase 522GW Dash Cam 3′ HD DVR… Amazon Prime $436.02 View We check over 130 million products every day for the best prices based on
Video recorders are currently one of the fastest growing areas of technology because they provide peace of mind and can save lives. a lot of money.
Nextbase’s new 522GW dash cam is not only a car watchman that constantly records the road ahead, it brings Amazon Alexa into your car’s interior and adds a potentially life-saving feature.
This could be the most exciting dash cam ever made!
- These best dash cams
Nextbase 522GW Review: Video Quality
However, let’s start with image quality, as it is still the most important aspect of a dash cam. Luckily, this is where the 522GW excels.
Video can be recorded in 1440p@30fps or 1080p@60fps, both settings look crisp and detailed, with new software that delivers optimal lighting and color regardless of time of day or weather conditions.
The video quality is incredibly impressive and may be the best we’ve ever seen from a DVR. We think it’s better than the Nextbase 612GW, which is capable of 4K recording (which also gives you larger file sizes) thanks to the new HDR-like software. We recommend that customers use 1440p for maximum detail.
Audio is also recorded, but can be turned off in the settings menu if desired.
Nextbase 522GW Review: Design
The physical design has received a major update. The 522GW is now about 35% smaller than its predecessor, and the new Click & Go Pro mounting system is a much more convenient solution that takes up less space on the windshield.
This was one of our biggest issues with the previous model, so it’s good to see it fixed, although the design still lags behind the more attractive Garmin 66W. The
522GW measures 94 x 53 x 45mm, weighs 125g and has a large 3″ touch screen on the back. It is quite compact, although the lens protrudes quite a distance from the body, nevertheless, it fits easily behind the rear-view mirror.
As we have already mentioned, the new mounting mechanism is very compact. It comes with two ways to attach to the screen – either with a suction cup or with a 3M sticky sticker. It then connects magnetically to the dash cam.
You are connecting the power cable to the mount, not to the DVR. This makes removing the DVR (for example, to replace it with another car) incredibly easy.
The mounting bracket attached to the camera itself has a swivel joint that allows you to easily adjust the position of the camera, giving you a clear view of the road ahead.
For those of you who want to record what’s going on behind you, Nextbase also releases a simple plug and play rear camera, part of a set of “modules” that can add additional functionality to the 522GW.
Nextbase 522GW Review: Features of
What’s really interesting, however, is that this is the first DVR in Europe with built-in Alexa. It allows you to control certain functions of the DVR, such as recording incidents; as well as ask Alexa for directions, turn on the music, call and much more. This is incredibly useful and keeps your eyes focused on the road.
What’s more, the 522GW comes with a new feature called Emergency SOS that can alert emergency services to your vehicle’s exact location if a serious collision is detected and the driver does not respond.
Once an incident is detected, the system will follow a series of fail-safe protocols to ensure there are no false calls before ringing the owner’s phone. If the driver still does not respond, emergency services will be alerted and vehicle location data will be uploaded.
We think this is an amazing feature (although thankfully we didn’t get a chance to test it).
The system can also be preloaded with medical history, blood type and next of kin. Obviously we haven’t had a chance to test this, but it’s good to know your dash cam is equipped with this potentially life-saving feature.
Nextbase 522GW Review: Software
Beyond these header features, Nextbase has also focused on improving the fundamentals. For example, connecting to a phone is now very fast thanks to the combination of Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi.
The MyNextbase companion app (iOS and Android) is also a huge improvement over the previous version, which was often slow and unresponsive.
We were seriously impressed with how easy it was to upload footage using the app, and we think Nextbase has the best system for this at the moment.
We found the camera’s menu system clear and easy to understand. It’s also easy to navigate thanks to the responsive touchscreen.
