Beginners Guide to Computer Monitor Speakers

What Are Computer Monitor Speakers?

Computer monitor speakers are devices designed to play sound through your desktop PC or laptop. They come in various sizes and levels of complexity, from single portable models to surround-sound gaming speakers with custom audio controls. They may use Bluetooth connectivity, a wired connection, or both.

Computer Monitor Speakers vs. Other Monitor Accessories

One of the key peripherals for a great home office and gaming setup, monitor speakers are designed to deliver a more immersive experience than you can get with just laptop speakers or built-in speakers.

Like separate webcams, wireless gaming headsets, and keyboards, they provide an upgraded user experience and generally involve simple plug-and-play installation. Computer speakers essentially replace a particular output device with a version that delivers higher quality. In fact, Ultimate Ears Hyperboom is a speaker that not only steps up the quality but also packs an impressive punch of sound. Learn more in our Ultimate Ears Hyperboom review.

Some computer monitor speakers are designed with a particular use in mind but can be used for other applications as well, much like computer monitors. For example, a set of powered gaming speakers may be geared towards gamers but will likely have broad appeal for music fans, audiophiles, and video sound editors, too.

Unlike accessories such as the best computer monitor glasses and monitor privacy screens, stereo speakers for your computer require a power connection and some form of connection to your pc.

How Computer Monitor Speakers Work

Computer monitor speakers connect to your laptop or desktop computer directly or via a gaming monitor or other peripheral device. They may also be wired or wireless speakers. Wired computer speakers typically feature 3.5mm audio-in jacks for an “aux cable,” USB, HDMI, or USB-C. A smart speaker—a computer speaker that also interfaces with smart home devices—will usually have wired and Bluetooth connectivity.

Wireless speakers and USB-powered computer speakers tend to come in pairs. These stereo speakers may also have features like treble control and adjustable bass response to fine-tune their audio output. Some more sophisticated computer speaker systems come with a sub-woofer and additional satellite speakers. Compared to a single portable speaker or powered dual speaker setup, these surround sound systems are more complex but generally provide higher-quality sound. Also, they have various audio settings that allow you to adjust the sound output, which means you’ll learn how to make a Bluetooth speaker louder.

Why Should You Buy New Computer Monitor Speakers?

If you’re a gamer, audiophile, or film enthusiast, you’ll want better sound quality for music and media on your home computer setup, especially at loud volumes. Even professionals, such as video editors, music producers, game developers, and social media developers, may need to fine-tune the audio output from computer-based sound files.

Compared to older models, new computer monitor speakers offer more connectivity options and better sound quality while taking up less physical space on your desktop. Some, such as modern 2.0 USB-powered desktop speakers, can approach the clarity and volume of older un-powered bookshelf speakers. You’ll also be able to find a solid option in nearly every price range, with some models providing excellent sound quality at a very affordable price.

Are Computer Monitor Speakers Worth Buying?

You’re a Gamer Looking for Audio Upgrade: If you’ve recently upgraded your display to something like the best Benq monitor or purchased a new gaming headset and are looking for a more powerful sound to help create an immersive, entertaining gaming experience, a new set of computer speakers might be a worthwhile step. A set with a right and left speaker and a subwoofer can make for dramatic and lifelike audio.

You’re a Digital Streamer or Media Editor: Upgraded computer monitor speakers can provide a convenient option for professionals needing to edit and playback video streams and audio recordings through a desktop or laptop computer. The best computer speaker systems provide clean sound and high-fidelity frequency response.

You Use a Wall-Mount Display or Ultrawide Monitor: Wall-mounted displays have some advantages for home office and home theater setups, but the sound quality often doesn’t match the visual quality of today’s 4k display panels. In addition, fine-tuning the audio output and working with the room’s acoustics can be difficult with just built-in speakers. In this case, using new external speakers is a great idea.

You Use a Computer Monitor as Part of Home Theater: A set of quality computer speakers can make for a more enjoyable cinematic experience for those who like to watch TV or movies on their computer display. Well-placed satellite speakers and a true sub provide clean sound and more precise volume control for the subtle nuances of film scores.

Why Computer Speakers May Not Be for You

You Mostly Use Headphones: If you typically use a wireless headset or earbuds to listen to music or media audio, you may find it redundant to invest in computer speakers. However, even an affordable pair of speakers for your desktop will likely provide a better audio experience than a laptop or built-in soundbars. This may come in handy for when you have guests or want stereo sound without putting in headphones.

You Have a Hi-Fi System Already: You might find computer speakers less necessary if you typically use a built-in or vintage hi-fi home stereo with bookshelf speakers when listening to music or watching movies. Getting these systems to work with new devices can be time-consuming, however, and some modern computer speakers have similar output while enabling features like Bluetooth 5.0.

You Use Mobile and Portable Devices for Audio: While not all computer speakers are optimized for use with mobile devices and portable consoles like the Nintendo switch, a growing number of computer monitor speaker systems are flexible enough to connect with mobile sources via wireless, Bluetooth 5.0 or another form of digital connection.

How Long Will Computer Monitor Speakers Last?

Depending on the build quality and the materials used in their construction, computer speakers can last for ten years or more. The speakers’ basic components, including magnets, cones, and springs, can last for decades depending on storage conditions.

Modern powered speakers with internal batteries will, in most cases, last as long as the built-in battery lasts. Lithium-ion batteries typically last for around 500-1000 charge cycles, which can be anywhere from one year to about eight years, based on how often you use the speaker.

Factors such as humidity, local air quality, and temperature affect the overall longevity of speakers. High heat, humid environments, and ozone smog will cause premature wear of the foam surrounds and gaskets in bookshelf speakers. More frequent movement, rapid plugging and unplugging, and power surges can all diminish the speaker’s lifespan as well.

To get the best longevity out of your computer speakers, avoid charging battery-powered models in very high heat and keep the speakers away from corrosive liquids.

How to Choose the Best Computer Monitor Speakers

Various factors, including use-case, budget, and space considerations, may help you decide on the best computer speakers for your needs. You may want the highest possible sound quality and be looking for a surround-sound setup with 1000 watts of power or more, or you may find that portable speakers with Bluetooth capability are more convenient. Below are some additional factors you should consider in your search.

Monitor Speakers’ Key Factors

1. Do You Need Wireless Connectivity?

One factor to consider is whether you need Bluetooth 5.0 or wireless capability for your computer monitor speakers. Wireless-enabled speakers may be more convenient to set up, and they might enable use with mobile devices and portable consoles like the Nintendo Switch. On the other hand, many audiophiles prefer a setup with non-powered bookshelf speakers.

2. Do You Need Hi-Fi or Surround-Sound Home Theater Compatibility?

If you’re looking for computer speakers that will integrate with your current home audio setup, then you may want to consider monitor speakers that can act as drivers for additional satellite speakers. Some computer speakers are compatible with surround-sound and multi-channel audio systems.

3. How Many Speakers Do You Need?

Another factor to consider is the size and complexity of your computer audio setup. Audio engineers, editors, and multi-player gaming enthusiasts may benefit from a more expansive set up with a dedicated subwoofer for bass. Paired speakers with internal woofers and drivers may be more than enough for more casual gamers and general media users.

4. What Kind of Monitor and Computer Are You Using?

As with other peripherals, the right speakers may depend on the type of monitor and laptop or desktop computer. If your computer has Bluetooth and wireless, for example, you have the option of using portable Bluetooth or Wireless speakers.

Can You Use Studio Monitors as Computer Speakers? – Musicians HQ

You’re at the store looking for new computer speakers and find yourself stopping to look at the studio monitors section. If they’re good enough to use in a professional studio, it makes sense they would be enjoyable to casually listen to every day at home. While this theory is valid, it isn’t as simple as you’d expect.

Can you use studio monitors as computer speakers? Yes, you can listen to music on your studio monitor, but you’ll hear a different sound. Studio monitors were made to produce a sound that is flat and doesn’t have any uniqueness or color behind it. Computer speakers were built to play your music in a pleasing and enjoyable way.

With studio monitors and computer stereos, it’s all about what you’re intending to hear. If you want music that is unfiltered, studio monitors may be for you. I’ve decided to dig a little deeper to explain more about all the factors to consider when choosing studio monitors. This way, you’ll know for a fact if studio monitors are something you’d enjoy as much as computer speakers.

Why Are Studio Monitors and Computer Speakers Made?

Studio monitors were made with professional sound engineers in mind. They were created to sound raw and showcase any imperfections in a song so that these can be tweaked in the studio during recording and mixing. More critical listeners enjoy studio monitors more as they can pick up any type of inconsistencies or frequency pattern issues within each song.

Computer speakers are built to make all tracks sound as good as possible, this means they often enhance the bass tones giving songs a punchier and fuller sound.

Why You May Not Like the Sound From Studio Monitors

If you are a casual listener who enjoys the overall quality of a song, you may not enjoy a studio monitor in place of a computer speaker. They are made more with a music producer in mind, rather than the average consumer. Listening to a studio monitor will cause you to hear mixes in the song that are more imbalanced and not as enjoyable as your other music.

You’ll hear more recording flaws in the overall sound of your music. This could be something that turns you off to the overall listening experience. If this is something that may concern you, refrain from purchasing a studio monitor and check out the computer speakers instead.

What You’ll Hear While Listening to a Studio Monitor

As you listen closely to a studio monitor, you’ll hear flatness rather than a polished sound. There are separate amplifiers that work with a studio monitor so that each tone frequency is easier to hear. This causes the various tones to be clearer and more detailed. When a speaker has a built-in power amplifier like this one, it’s known as an active speaker.

The bass and treble featured in the songs you’re listening to will be a lot more balanced to hear, which will help you focus more on other instruments and sound happening within the song. This makes the overall sound of your music flatter and more precise. You’ll now find it easier to spot any type of imperfections featured within the music.

People who are very dedicated to accurate listening will enjoy studio monitors. It allows the listener to clearly hear what was originally heard in the studio while the song was being recorded.

If you’re interested in music or audio mixing, these are the best speakers for you. Computer speakers use more of a passive sound that delivers the fully designed version of the music. It’s released from a single amplifier with different tones and notes of the song all at once.

Many basic computer and at-home speakers have been created with the consumer in mind to enhance their experience.

How Well Can Studio Monitors Project?

If you’re purchasing a studio monitor, it’s understandable that you might assume they can project throughout the room as a basic speaker can. Unfortunately, that isn’t what you’ll find with studio monitors. They can only project their audio to reach a shorter distance.

When music is played in a room from a computer speaker, the room will naturally enhance the frequencies of the sound. This helps the audio sound a lot richer and enhanced. The main goal of a studio monitor is to keep the sound and frequencies from being enhanced too much.

If you’re planning to regularly listen to music solo from your computer, the projection of studio monitors shouldn’t negatively affect you. If your goal is to entertain a room full of people with music, computer speakers or similar may be a better choice. Smaller spaces work better at decreasing the sound frequency in each room.

You can experience the differences in sound given off by a studio monitor by walking around and listening to the music throughout different areas of the room. When you walk farther away, the sound won’t be as pleasing as when you sit right next to the monitor.

If you’re planning to only sit right next to the monitor all day on a computer, studio monitors can be an acceptable replacement for computer speakers.

Do Studio Monitors Look Different To Computer Speakers?

When purchasing a studio monitor, some people get anxious they might confuse it with a computer speaker. To help rid you of the confusion, there are a few different distinguishing features you’ll find in a studio monitor that you won’t see in a computer monitor and vice versa.

Bulkier Than Computer Speakers

Newer studio monitors will often come with amplifiers and crossovers built into it. The sound still has the ability to properly filter without needing to purchase extra equipment. Though this is convenient, you’ll notice that studio monitors are a lot bulkier than computer speakers. Because of this, you’ll have less room for extra items next to the computer on your desk.

Different Knobs to Adjust Sound

Studio monitors also include a dial that allows you to change different parts of the music you’re hearing. This means you can adjust the power levels of the music or use different music absorber options found on the speaker itself. Other studio monitors contain many different knobs and buttons to help adjust frequencies.

If you aren’t interested in changing the frequency of the sound of your music, it may be smarter to refrain from purchasing a studio monitor and go with a basic computer speaker which will probably just have a couple of simple knobs to alter the volume and the amount of treble/bass.

Older Monitors Require More Equipment

Older studio monitors are available for recreational purposes and look different than the average studio monitor. They contain a sound system that requires the monitor to be paired up with a crossover and amplifier. These both filter the different frequencies being emitted from a song. Filtering the frequencies helps them remain in a certain range.

How Else Can Studio Monitors Be Used?

Other than playing in a smaller room from your computer, there are other places studio monitors can be found. Here are a few other areas you can use a studio monitor:

  • Recording Studio- This is where studio monitors were originally used. Recording studios were built to support different frequencies of sound. Many are placed throughout the room to detect different pitch frequencies, so recording artists and producers can easily mix new sounds with the music heard from these monitors.
  • Home Theaters- If you’re listening to music or watching a film in your home theatre, studio monitors can be used to provide a more detailed sound experience. This normally requires several different studio monitors spread throughout the theatre since they don’t transmit sound to long distances.
  • Video Game Playing- Many people will use studio monitors throughout their video game playing experience. It helps deepen and enhance the quality of the game you’re playing, especially if the game is being played right next to the monitor. If you want to play your game away from the computer, you may want to install more than one monitor to capture the full sound.

How to Connect Your Studio Monitor to Your Computer

Connecting a studio monitor can sometimes be a fairly tricky process to tackle. This is because they connect and operate very differently than how you would set up a computer speaker. Once you learn the necessary way to link the respective monitor and computer equipment together, you should have your computer’s music emitting from your studio monitors in no time.

Below are the following steps to follow in order to connect your studio monitors to your PC computer.

1) Look to see what inputs the studio monitors have

I have a pair of Yamaha HS7 monitor speakers which I also use as computer speakers most of the time. On the back, they have two input options one is for an XLR cable and one is for a 3/4 inch instrument jack (guitar cable). I tend to use the latter.

2) Connect speakers into an audio interface.

The way I connect two separate speakers to my laptop is via an audio interface. Plug the cable from each speaker into the speaker outputs usually on the back of the audio interface as shown in the picture below:

3) Plug the interface into your PC or Mac

All modern audio interfaces should have a USB connection making it easier to connect to your laptop or computer:

4) Select the audio interface as the audio device on the computer

On a mac this is done by going to > System Preferences > Sound > Output > Select a device for sound output

On a PC it is done by going to control panel > sound > playback

The sound from your computer should then come out of your monitor speakers.

Are Studio Monitors Good For Playing Video Games?

As briefly mentioned earlier, studio monitors can be used to enhance audio throughout several different activities — one of those being video games. Many people will choose to buy speakers specific for gaming, while others will want to use their studio monitors for their gaming experience as well.

If you are hoping to use studio monitors for gaming, it’s usually best to use them if you’re playing up close on your computer. If your game is being played on a game console and you’re sitting far away from it, you can still use a studio monitor, but consider scattering several ones all over your room, so the sound continues to carry throughout your area.

Studio monitors can especially come in handy if you’re playing video games that are a little more intense with music that matches the seriousness of the game or games with instrumental features.

You won’t be able to just walk into a store and purchase the first studio monitor you find. Instead, you’ll need to find a monitor that can easily produce frequencies that can blend the midranges and high frequencies of your game.

Are Studio Headphones Also Good For Listening to Music?

Studio headphones can be put to the same purposes as studio monitors. They provide a flat sound with a lower and flatter frequency response. Like studio monitors, they are made for you to spot any imperfections in the music that you’re listening to. This means that they won’t be pleasing to users who are only listening to find a pleasing and enjoyable sound.

When you use studio headphones to listen to your music, you’ll hear less bass. These headphones help to keep the bass at normal levels rather than at higher levels like commercial headphones. If the bass is set at lower levels than commercial headphones allow, then you’re able to hear other elements of the song as well.

These headphones have also been designed to be used for long time periods since they are intended for studio professionals to use when mixing music. Because of this, you’ll notice they are very comfortable and made to sit on your ears for a while. These headphones are also sturdy and durable. So you’ll be able to keep them for extended periods of time.

If you want to show a deeper appreciation for all of the elements and instruments that go into a full song, these are great for you to purchase. If you’d rather listen to a song after it has been corrected and has a loud bass sound, you may want to purchase commercial headphones.

Studio Monitors Vs. Computer Speakers

When making the decision about whether studio monitors will work just as efficiently as computer speakers, you’ll want to keep the factors above in mind. Studio monitors were created with the intention of only being used by audio professionals.

Studio monitors are likely to cost a lot more than a pair of computer speakers because they are designed for professional use. A lot of the extra features and quality you are paying for are not worth it for just regular music listening.

It is also tricky to connect most monitor speakers directly to a computer or laptop, so if you don’t already have an audio interface, you might find it difficult to get connected at all.

If you’d rather find speakers that emit the filtered audio that you are used to hearing, computer speakers will be the smartest purchase for you. Make sure you’re considering all the factors involved in your decision before making an investment in these studio monitors.

People have been asking me for months to test these speakers. It was argued that this model is something special, close to perfection in the budget price segment. Well, here’s the review, let’s see what’s what.

When audiophiles or sound professionals talk about Yamaha speakers, the first thing that comes to mind is perhaps the company’s most iconic and important model, the NS-10. An interesting fact about this model is that it was originally aimed at the Hi-Fi market, and only then became available exclusively for the PRO segment.

In brief: Clear sound, fairly deep bass that easily compensates for the lack of a subwoofer in most cases, great price – we found no flaws in the Yamaha HS7. We strongly recommend.

I’ve been using the previous ROKIT G2 in the office for the past five years, so as you can imagine, I’m extremely interested in what has changed in the third generation. KRK sent me a 5″ speaker version – and it was one of the first pairs in the country, which I received a few months before the release, vowing to keep it a secret.

The Dynaudio Xeo 6 is often misrepresented as a pair of wireless speakers. In fact, Xeo 6 is a system that replaces DACs, audio cables, amplifiers and speakers. The only part of the system not included with the Xeo 6 is the signal source, such as an audio server or traditional computer. What’s more, it’s all packaged in an excellently designed case.

KEF’s X series is aimed at owners of laptops, computers and mobile devices. Model X300A Wireless from this series is an active speaker with the ability to play sound via USB and network.

The American company Audioengine is based on the idea of bringing near-computer sound to the level of Hi-Fi. The product catalog includes active and passive acoustic systems, desktop (desktop) amplifiers, wireless adapters, DACs and receivers, plus the rest of the little things. The considered model Audioengine A5 + occupies the top position in the corporate hierarchy.

The pages of hi-fi magazines are full of new DAC models aimed at working with a PC. Many of them are modestly sized and come with volume control, which makes it possible to significantly shorten the path from the files on the hard drive to the music around you – provided that you have already purchased a pair of active speakers.

Many 2.1 speaker sets automatically make you think about the budget and the average quality of the resulting sound. After all, the main scope of such a solution is computer multimedia systems or a minimal addition to a TV. However, the Dali logo does not allow speakers to be taken lightly.

Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin could have imagined that his invention would inspire not only aeronauts, but also musicians of the hard rock genre unknown to him, and then consumer electronics designers, and not at home, in Germany, but in shores of Foggy Albion?

Planet’s signature spherical speakers are available not only in different sizes, but also in different versions: passive and active. The Planet LW Kit is an active version of the large L size spheres designed to work with your computer and Apple devices.

The proprietary Uni-Q transducer makes KEF products unique not only in sound but also in design, so the KEF X300A active acoustics turned out to be unlike either a home computer or a studio.

The Polk Audio TL3 has a well-balanced, extremely flat sound that most participants perceive as a monitor sound.

Doesn’t sound dry, harsh or overly analytical. After-sounds are not reduced, on the contrary, they are very long and make it possible to distinguish well the timbre coloring of sounds. The resolution is perhaps the highest among all test participants.

The scene is absolutely correct, with good localization. The acoustics sound is warm, musical, rich in intonations.

The low-mids and the reproduced section of the upper bass themselves also sound good, detailed and clear, but lack the level.

The upper bass is slightly forced and not always clear. This is partially offset by plugging the phase inverter ports, which raises the lower limit of reproducible frequencies. The general character of the sound is informative, cool.

When it comes to the sound of the Cambridge Audio Minx Min 21, the first thing that catches your eye is the exceptionally smooth and accurate mids with surprisingly good resolution.

The overall presentation of musical material is restrained, with some coolness, but at the same time, the midrange and voices sound emphasized in relief, moving and articulated.

For desktop use, this model may seem large, but for home theater or sounding of the veranda – the option is suitable, and they are inexpensive.

Tell me, what kind of decent audiophile would buy a regular multimedia speaker for his computer, when you can buy a Hi-Fi quality USB DAC, a small amplifier and a pair of miniature satellites with a subwoofer? A couple of suitable subwoofers have already been tested in this issue, it’s time to deal with the satellites. You can use regular shelf stands, but, in my opinion, they are large and look bulky. Therefore, I decided to choose models that are extremely compact and most interesting in terms of design. In addition to the ability to use the selected acoustics on a computer desk, consider their applicability to work as part of a home theater.

The model is made on the same element base as the Adam A5X, but the design is more “homely”, the monitors are covered with piano lacquer, which, of course, perfectly “prints” fingers. Another small difference – the “socket” for the tweeter is round – in the A5X the tweeter is enclosed in a square.

In this model, the tweeters are no longer fabric, as in the previous HS series, but titanium, the frequency range is expanded, there is less distortion. On the rear wall of the adjustments, the input level and the switches “Lo trim”, “Hi trim” and “Lo cut” remained. “Lo Cut” and “Hi Trim” work in the same way as in the previous HS series, but “Lo trim” is not a “shelf” EQ, but rather a complex filter, something combined with a low-cut filter.

You can hear directly opposite reviews about Adam acoustics: from complete rejection to “Well, finally, here it is!”. This fact alone suggests that we have uncommon acoustics in front of us. Remember how a new car was created in the novel “Wheels” by Arthur Hailey – the appearance was “innovative”, but it seemed to many … Well, you understand … Although the ambiguous body shapes in the novel were made so intentionally.

These three-way monitors are the only model in the test that claims to be an average field in the studio. Let’s see, is that right?

The VXT6 replaces the old V-Series. The rounded drawers, made of molded ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Sterile) foam, have good vibration-absorbing properties and are pleasantly heavy on the hands during installation.

The rear panel of the monitors is “loaded” enough. Here is a standard pair of balanced inputs on XLR and TRS connectors, level controls, on which, however, not 0 dB, but +4 is marked as a reference point. This marking, by the way, is quite common in Japanese products. The phase inverter pipe is brought out here – back. Let’s go through the frequency response switches from top to bottom.

If you don’t want to clutter up your living room with subwoofers, then the MSP5 Studio is for you. Everything is very similar to the older MSP7 Studio, except for the sound. It is fundamentally different – such babies do not imply any bottoms that are perceptible by the body, but it turns out … In general terms, the sound resembles preset settings, presets, “Rock” in music centers: significantly raised bottoms and tops, this effect is still achieved, “failing » middle, – such an equalization is called a “bird”.
