90,000 LG exits the smartphone market. We tell how the South Korean corporation tried to produce amazing gadgets – but still lost – Meduza

        Young-ho Lee / Sipa / Vida Press

In early April, the South Korean corporation LG Electronics announced the closure of its division for the production of mobile devices. In recent years, their production has brought constant losses to the company. In an attempt to turn the tide and get consumers interested, LG has even begun releasing outlandish gadgets, such as a smartphone with a concave screen or a device with two screens, one of which rotates 90 degrees. However, all this did not help the company to increase sales – its share in the global smartphone market in recent years has been about two percent. Meduza tells how and why one of the world’s largest corporations outright lost the battle for the mobile device market.

LG Electronics announced plans to leave the smartphone market on April 5. The company said that they plan to completely curtail the production of mobile devices by the end of July this year. However, software updates and technical support for all LG flagship smartphones that are already in use by users will be provided for another three years.

“LG’s strategic decision to exit the incredibly competitive mobile phone sector will allow the company to focus resources on growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart home, robotics, artificial intelligence and business solutions, and platforms and services,” said in a statement on the LG website.

Rumors that the company will close this division have been circulating for several months. The reason for this is the high competition in this market segment and the huge losses that the company suffered from this business – since 2016 they have totaled $ 4.5 billion, The Korea Times noted.

According to research firm Counterpoint, by the end of 2020, LG had only 2% of the global smartphone market. The company has been left far behind by both major manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Apple, Lenovo, as well as lesser-known companies from China — Oppo, Vivo and Realme. At the same time, back in 2009, LG was the third most popular smartphone manufacturer in the world with a market share exceeding 10%. Despite the gradual sinking to the bottom of the sales rankings, LG surprised and even pushed the smartphone industry forward.

First steps and competition with market legends

LG’s history of personal phone production began back in 1995, with the so-called “bricks” – users dubbed cell phones that way because of their size. LG had to fight for the new market with such legends as Motorola, Siemens and Nokia – they started the production of portable phones a decade earlier, in the 1980s all three companies had already released several models and firmly occupied this market.

LG launched its first CDMA phones in 1997, and by 2003 it became the world’s largest manufacturer of devices in this standard – CDMA has been developing along with GSM for a long time, this mobile communication standard was especially popular in North America. Communicators operating in the GSM standard were introduced to the market by LG in 2001.

One of the company’s first successes was the LG G7100, released in 2003. Outwardly resembling a classic clamshell, it was actually a much more interesting device – its screen rotated 270 degrees, and the main advantage was a 0.3 megapixel camera located on the side. Thus, the gadget was a kind of hybrid of a camera and a phone.

This was far from the last attempt by LG to create something like a “camera phone” – in 2006 the company launched the LG KG920 model on the market with one of the highest quality displays on the market at that time and a camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels. The cost of this model was $ 990 – it was one of the most expensive gadgets on the market.

Another important factor was the transformation of mobile phones into a fashion accessory – LG was one of the first to feel this trend. As a result, the company began to develop some smartphone models with a female audience in mind. A breakthrough in this direction was the LG KG800 phone, released in 2006 – a stylish slider that looked like a thin bar of chocolate and received the nickname Chocolate, which then launched a whole line of devices from LG. This phone has become a popular gift for women — there were practically no men among KG800 users, but they made up about 80% of the model’s buyers.

By the late 2000s, LG was one of the leaders in the mobile phone industry. However, at the same time, Apple had already released its first iPhones, and Google had developed the Android mobile operating system – and it was time for completely different technologies.

The Android era and strange experiments

One of LG’s first successful smartphones based on Android was the LG P500 Optimus One . Its characteristics were not too different from competing models from other manufacturers, but at the price it was like the current Xiaomi – about $ 350. In the first month of sales, the company sold about a million devices, which in 2010, when the smartphone was released, was a great success.

Collaboration with Google became truly significant for LG – at some point, the American corporation decided to test the demand for mobile devices and understand the needs of users in order to decide for themselves whether to enter this market. As a result, the collaboration between LG and Google led to the creation of the LG Nexus 4 smartphone – it was the progenitor of Google’s Pixel line.

“I personally [in this smartphone] like the new Photo Sphere 360 panorama shooting mode, as well as the ability to use inductive charging – you don’t need to fiddle with the connection, just put the smartphone on a special surface for charging,” spoke about the advantages of this device Google Director of Android Development John Lagerling in 2012.

Unfortunately for LG Nexus 4, it was the only successful device developed with Google – the next two smartphones LG Nexus 5 and LG Nexus 5X were heavily criticized by users for the quality of materials and a large number of defects. From that moment, the fall of LG began, which the company tried to reverse with various experiments.

The first unusual device was LG G Flex – its main “chip” was a concave screen, as well as an unusual “self-healing” coating on the back of the smartphone, designed to save the device from scratches. LG claimed that the unique curve of the screen follows the contour of the human face and reduces the distance from the lips to the microphone when the phone is held to the ear – thereby providing better voice and sound quality. There were no other functions for which a curved screen would be useful, and, as a result, it did not find much popularity among users. However, LG continued to bend its line and released the second generation of Flex smartphones. His sales were also low.

In 2014, LG launched the G4 flagship smartphone with an incredibly elegant design, but the launch was overshadowed by global problems inside the device: some smartphone models started to reboot and never left this state. LG did not pay attention to the problem for a long time and ignored complaints, but in the end they nevertheless admitted the presence of a factory defect. LG Mobile Global0 degrees, as a result of which the phone took the form of the letter “T”. Announcing the new product, LG demonstrated how convenient it is to use this device while driving a car: a navigator can work on the main screen, while the user can take an additional rotary screen for a music player.

Due to the two screens, the smartphone turned out to be much thicker than its competitors, and the unfolding display did not cause much excitement among users. As a result, according to the Herald Corporation, in South Korea, in the two months since the launch, LG managed to sell less than 50,000 LG Wings, although the company intended to sell about two million smartphones. Released a couple of months before the LG Wing, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 smartphone sold ten times more in the same period.

        Blackberry, Nokia, Motorola, LG…

LG is far from the first major company to fall short of the competition in the smartphone market. So, in 2016, the legendary manufacturer of Blackberry mobile phones, which in the 2000s had a cult status among businessmen and office workers, first abandoned the development of new models on its operating system and switched to Android, and at the end of the same year announced a complete cessation own production of smartphones. The company transferred this function to partners, and itself focused on software development.

Once the undisputed market leader, the Finnish corporation Nokia, with the advent of Android, was also unable to reorganize and maintain market leadership. In 2012, the company lost the first place among mobile phone manufacturers to Samsung. Hoping to regain leadership, the company bet on the wrong operating system – it began to work closely with Microsoft, releasing devices based on Windows Phone. As a result, both Windows Phone and Nokia crashed.

Nokia’s mobile business was acquired by Microsoft in 2013 for 5.44 billion euros. After this deal, the American corporation abandoned the Nokia brand, renaming all manufactured mobile devices to Microsoft Lumia, but later was forced to close the mobile business and stop releasing new versions of its Windows Phone OS – because it outright lost to Android. As a result, the Finnish holding HMD Global bought out the dying mobile phone business from Microsoft in 2016 and continued to produce low-cost smartphones under the Nokia brand already based on Android. As of the end of 2020, the share of Nokia smartphones in the global market is about 3%.

The fate of the mobile business of the once top phone manufacturer Motorola also turned out to be unenviable. In 2011, it was forced to sell its smartphone division, which began to constantly generate losses in the late 2000s – it was bought out by Google. A few years later, this business was bought from Google by the Chinese corporation Lenovo, which now produces smartphones both under its own brand and under the Motorola brand. However, the total share of Lenovo in the global mobile smartphone market, like that of Nokia, is about 3%.

LG also tried to sell its sinking mobile business, but was unable to negotiate with potential buyers, among whom, according to a South Korean news agency, were the Vietnamese corporation Vingroup and the German automaker Volkswagen.

The main reason for the collapse of LG’s mobile business, Counterpoint researchers cite the incredibly increased competition in this market segment, but the company still made a number of its own mistakes. For example, in order to increase profitability, LG has reduced the number of research and development projects, which inevitably affected its position in a competitive market driven by innovation.

“The company has constantly fluctuated between focusing on high-margin, high-margin flagship smartphones and lower-priced devices that would capture more market share and gain a foothold in the minds of consumers. But all these steps did not help, ”Counterpoint notes.

Due to the saturation of the market from Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Vivo, LG was unable to provide a truly competitive smartphone in the mid-range and budget segment, and in the premium line, the company failed to compete with established leaders in the face of Samsung and Apple.
