A single Chomp Chomp can be found in the secret underground region of Bean Valley, though up to four can be fought at once in the corresponding battle. To the 155th anniversary of Maxim Gorky – “The wind gathers clouds over the gray plain of the sea …”

… You, of course, like me, know “ The song about the Petrel”, the first line of which is included in the title. It’s no coincidence…

No, “you” are not unfortunate, robbed – or robbed of themselves? – heroes and heroines of the video: “Who wrote War and Peace?” (Pravoslavie.Ru).

And those who, like me, in their teenage years read, memorized, and today they can continue:

“The Petrel, similar to black lightning, proudly flies between the clouds and the sea.

Now touching the waves with his wing, now soaring up to the clouds with an arrow, he screams, and the clouds hear joy in the bold cry of a bird.

There is a thirst for a storm in this cry! The power of anger, the flame of passion and confidence in victory are heard by the clouds in this cry.

Seagulls groan before the storm – they groan, rush over the sea and are ready to hide their horror before the storm to its bottom.

And the loons groan too – they, the loons, cannot enjoy the battle of life: the thunder of blows frightens them.

The stupid penguin timidly hides his fat body in the rocks… Only the proud Petrel flies boldly and freely over the sea, gray with foam!”

…Yes, “All darker and lower clouds descend over the sea…”, “The wind howls… Thunder rumbles…”

But! – The petrel – “a proud, black demon of the storm, – and laughs and sobs … He laughs at the clouds, he sobs with joy!

In the wrath of thunder, – a sensitive demon – he has long heard fatigue, he is sure that the clouds of the sun will not hide – no, they will not! (here and below italics mine – L.V.)

… And also – accept – from the “Song of the Falcon”:

“… Lying in the gorge, For a long time I thought about the death of a bird, about passion for the sky.

And then he looked into that distance that forever caresses his eyes with a dream of happiness.

    – And what did he see, the dead Falcon, in this desert without bottom and edge? Why do people like him, when dead, confuse the soul with their love of flying into the sky? What is clear to them? And I could have learned all this by taking off into the sky for a little while.

He said and did. Curled up into a ring, he sprang into the air and flashed in the sun like a narrow ribbon.

Born to crawl – he can’t fly!.. Forgetting about it, he fell on the stones, but didn’t kill himself, but laughed…

    – So that’s the beauty of flying into the sky! She is in the fall! .. Funny birds! Not knowing the earth, longing for it, they strive high into the sky and seek life in the sultry desert. It’s just empty. There is a lot of light, but there is no food there and there is no support for the living body. Why pride? Why reproaches? Then, to use it to cover up the folly of your desires and hide behind them your unsuitability for the work of life? Funny birds! .. But now their speeches will not deceive me any more! I myself know everything! I – I saw the sky … I flew into it, measured it, knew the fall, but did not crash, but I only believe in myself more strongly. Let those who cannot love the earth live by deceit. I know the truth. And I will not believe their calls. Creation of the earth – I live on the earth.

And he curled up into a ball on the stone, proud of himself.

The sea shone, everything was in bright light, and menacingly the waves beat against the shore.

In their lion’s roar, a song about a proud bird thundered, the rocks trembled from their blows, the sky trembled from a formidable song:

“We sing glory to the madness of the brave! you bled… But there will be time – and drops of your hot blood, like sparks, will flare up in the darkness of life and many brave hearts will be kindled with an insane thirst for freedom, light!0011

Let you die!.. But in the song of the brave and strong in spirit you will always be a living example, a proud call to freedom, to light!

We sing a song to the madness of the brave!..”

… Do you remember the first lines of the “Song of the Falcon”? –

“The sea – huge, lazily sighing near the shore – fell asleep and motionless in the distance, bathed in the blue radiance of the moon. Soft and silvery, it merged there with the blue southern sky and sleeps soundly, reflecting the transparent fabric of cirrus clouds, motionless and not hiding the golden patterns of the stars. It seems that the sky is leaning lower and lower over the sea, wanting to understand what the restless waves, sleepily crawling on the shore.”

Oh, how many beautiful lines Aleksey Maksimovich has about the sea! My dear Black Sea! How many stories are connected with Gorky’s stay in Odessa! Let me remind you a little…

    * * *

Maxim Gorky, “working as a loader in the port of Odessa, living among the inhabitants of the “bottom” in a “barzhan” – a doss house located near the sea, on the descent to Customs Square. There, Gorky saw his future heroes, who came to the port from the regions of Moldavanka, Peresyp, the Old Bazaar and drank their earned pennies in taverns. Odessa impressions found artistic embodiment in the stories “Chelkash”, “My Companion”, “Emelyan Pilyai”, “On the Salt”, “Count Ridiculous and That’s All”.

Gorky received an invitation from the editor of the Odessa News newspaper to move to work in our city.

“I’m moving to Odessa at the invitation of Marakuev,” the writer recalls. Aleksey Maksimovich was tempted by life in Odessa, on the seashore, as E.P. Peshkov. But Gorky did not move to Odessa, but agreed to be a correspondent for Odessa News at the All-Russian Industrial Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod. Since May 1896, seventy essays have arrived in Odessa over the course of three and a half months, which made a bright mark in the history of journalism and were of great importance in the writer’s work.

They write: “Gorky’s first meeting with Odessa took place in August 1891. At that time, a native of the Russian hinterland – the Volga region – wandered around Rus’ to find his place in life and find out how people live.

Subsequently, recalling those days, Gorky wrote: “My sympathy for the Ukrainian people arose as early as 1891, when I walked around Ukraine.

He came here from Bessarabia, walking around almost all of Ukraine from the Northern Donets to the Dniester, from the forests of Chernihiv to the steppes of Budzhak.

In Odessa, Gorky – then still “tramp Alyoshka”, sometimes: “student” – a loader of the Odessa port. And – “he is rightfully considered our fellow countryman.”

“Here is the writer’s self-portrait from his story “My Companion”: “…in a tramp suit, with a loader’s strap on his back, and smeared with coal dust.”

In the same place, he describes how he dined in the port of Odessa: “Locating …. with watermelon and bread” not far from the “granite pier” and “near the boxes.”

You can also find out that at that time, due to the influx of “starving”, labor prices in the harbor were low, so that it was possible to earn 80 kopecks per day, of which about half was spent on food.

“As I remember now,” Ivan Dmitrievich Vetrov, who worked with him in the port, said, “the slightly angular figure of young Gorky. I was standing on the overpass, and the “student”, as we then called Alexei Maksimovich, was below.

The loaders hoisted six-pound sacks on their shoulders, pulled in single file along the ladder to the ship, and there they poured grain into the bottomless hold.

“Inhabitants of the bottom”, “savages”, “tramps” – this is how disparagingly they called all the destitute, who flocked to the Odessa port for a piece of bread.

And Gorky, first of all, saw people in them, noticed the features of genuine humanity and an inextinguishable sense of camaraderie.

His Odessa impressions formed the basis of “Chelkash” and other stories of the writer, in which he painted a picture of forced labor in the port, which enslaved and depersonalized people.

This is how Gorky described life in the Odessa Harbor:

“The blue southern sky darkened with dust is cloudy, the hot sun looks into the greenish sea, as if through a thin gray veil.

It is almost not reflected in the water, cut through by the blows of oars, steamship propellers, sharp keels of Turkish feluccas and other ships plowing the narrow harbor in all directions.

    The waves of the sea, clad in granite, are suppressed by huge weights sliding along their ridges;

The ringing of anchor chains, the rumble of the clutches of wagons carrying cargo, the metallic shriek of iron sheets falling from somewhere on the pavement stone, the dull thud of wood, the rattling of cabbies, the whistles of steamships, now piercingly sharp, now dull roaring, the screams of loaders, sailors and customs soldiers – all these sounds merge into the deafening music of the working day and, rebelliously swaying, stand low in the sky above the harbor – more and more new waves of sounds rise up to them from the earth – sometimes dull, rumbling, they severely shake everything around, then sharp thundering – they tear the dusty, sultry air … “

Gorky lived in a barzhan – that’s what they called in Odessa a rooming house for homeless port loaders, as if a hostel for port workers, who were called so – “barzhanok”.

It was damp, dark and crowded.

The air, poisoned by shag smoke, the fumes of drying clothes and shoes, squeezed the chest and intoxicated the head.

The inhabitants of the barzhan laid damp mattresses stuffed with shavings right on the cement floor and fell into a heavy, sound sleep.

Later, the building at Lanzheronovskiy descent, 2, where the barzhans were stationed, was converted into a harbor workers’ club. Now the Rusalka bar and the Atena bookstore are located here.

A memorial plaque hangs at the entrance, reminding that A.M. lived here in 1891. Gorky” [2].

No longer hanging. It was torn off…

The authors of this publication note that Gorky’s articles in the newspaper Odessa News were published “for three and a half months almost daily, and each was 300-400 lines long. His articles talked about the new Russian capitalism, a predator that entered the arena of history.

Everything happened during the summer and autumn 1896 years old, and from the beginning of 1897, when the magazine “Life of the South” began to appear in Odessa, he expressed his readiness to be published in it “[2].

“In 1897, in the weekly “Life of the South”, published in Odessa, Gorky’s stories “Vanka Mazin”, “Notch”, “In the Steppe” were published” [1].

Again Gorky visited Odessa in 1904, on his way from Yalta to Riga.

“Back then, he, already a popular author ‘from the life of tramps’, was recognized on the streets and entered into conversation with him.

As one contemporary recalled, he “was walking along Rishelievsky and at that time a group of loaders was walking towards him.

They recognized Maxim Gorky and greeted them, Gorky bowed, approached them and began to ask where they worked, what was their salary, how was life. , “Odessa Review”, or the same “Odessa News”” [2].

Author of a number of “excellent autobiographical works”, “the most significant of them -” Childhood “(1913 – 1914),” In people “(1916), “My Universities” (1923) and “Notes from a Diary. Memoirs” (1924). The grandiose but unfinished epic novel “The Life of Klim Samgin” did not forget about Odessa either.

“At the end of the 1920s, the writer sent a telegram of thanks to the workers of the Odessa bread factory in response to the assignment of his name to this enterprise.

Gorky paid much attention to young Odessa writers – Isaac Babel, Valentin Kataev, Yuri Olesha, Vera Inber.

After the death of Eduard Bagritsky, he took care of the publication of his works.

By the beginning of the 1930s, Odessa already had Gorky Street, the Gorky Library, and the Gorky Cinema” [2].

Today there are none. Our beloved “Gorkovka” is now called: “Odessa National Science Library”, and that’s all. The street is called: “Spiridonovskaya” – in honor of either a certain merchant Spiridonov, or – in honor of St. Spyridon Trimifuntsky. For, in December 1807, “the left aisle of the Transfiguration Cathedral was consecrated in the name of this Greek saint. A new street was being formed nearby at this time. So the locals decided to call it Spiridonovskaya – not yet officially” [3].

The street was renamed in the mid-1990s, and back in October 2020, it really “took place” “…some incident. The street sign, as we see in the photo, broadcasts: “Vulitsya Spiridonivska”. Below we read on the tablet: “The street is named after the great Russian writer, the founder of the literature of socialist realism Maxim Gorky (Alexey Maksimovich Peshkov)” [3].

The authors of the article “Maxim Gorky and Odessa” recall that “Odessa theaters also paid their respectful tribute to our literary countryman.

Back in 1905, the play “Summer Residents” by Gorky was staged here, which even caused massive political demonstrations, and later, the performances “Yegor Bulychev” and “Vassa Zheleznov” were staged on the stage of the Ukrainian Theater.

In the Russian Theater – “At the Bottom”, “Children of the Sun” [2].

Yes, I remember, I managed to see plays at the Russian Theatre. Now there is no such theater in Odessa.

I will continue quoting the article:

“In the spring of 1933, it became known that, returning from treatment abroad, Alexei Maksimovich would visit Odessa.

In the early morning of May 17, the ship “Jean Zhores” entered the Odessa Bay. Leaning on the gunwale, Gorky gazed pensively at the city and port.

The poet Georgy Zakharov wrote a long poem about this:

“He looked into the distance, perhaps remembering
His hard work on the seashore,
    Mudslides in the Odessa impassability,
    Wandering through the villages barefoot,
Smoky kagan in a doss house ,
That the ceiling was covered with ashes,
On a hard plank a handful of raw straw
And a night without sleep accompanied by drunken talk.

The ship rounded the lighthouse and approached the pier.

Thousands of Odessans filled the port. Veterans of the port, who remembered the young loader Alyosha Peshkov, stood in the forefront of those who greeted the writer.0011

    – When you come to our wonderful country, you feel much stronger. I would like to work brutally in order to keep up with you…

In the memoirs of the radio operator of the motor ship “Jean Zhores” Yuri Bushtuev, it is said: “It seemed that the whole city came to greet him. The train left for Moscow only in the evening. The writer was given a deluxe room at the hotel. But he stayed on the ship.

In the evening Gorky left for Moscow. He had three years left to live…”

The line ends the article: “And as the poet Yevgeny Bandurenko wrote in his poem, with respect “we lay a wreath to Gorky”” [2]. Alas…

There was a sanatorium in Odessa, and a park named after Maxim Gorky with monuments to the great writer. My park! – we planted it in the 60s, it is ten minutes even at a leisurely, “age” walk. In 1972, they rejoiced at the opening of the monument (sculptor A. Knyazik, architect V. Golod).

Obviously, on the occasion of the anniversary, on March 16, 2023, the Historical and Toponymic Commission of the City Council of Odessa decided “to remove the monument to Gorky M. from the public space” [4], that is, to dismantle the monument. Where will it be placed after the demolition – and by the decision of the Odessa Regional Executive Committee of 12/25/1984, No. 652, the monument is classified as a cultural heritage site – it is still unknown.

Do the lines that end M. Gorky’s poem “The Legend of Marko” come to mind by chance? –

… And you will live on earth,
    How blind worms live:
They will not tell fairy tales about you,
They will not sing songs about you!

Do I accidentally recall from the writer’s letters:

“Animated objects that correct people’s positions and inhabit the city of Tiflis are no worse than Kazan and any other. Just as deceitful, proud, hypocritical – and infinitely pitiful. They also don’t want to understand life and themselves, and just as “aspire” – where to? Everywhere where a bribe is foreseen” [5].

“It is stuffy for people to live on this damp earth, and that is why they are so angry and dry. They would be kinder and gentler if they were put in the sea for a while. Deep in the sea It would heal them. And on earth it would be spacious and quiet” [6].

Oh, 24 volumes of M. Gorky’s letters, plus 25 volumes of works of art – can a mere mortal be able to overcome?! But there is a lot of very interesting, topical stuff there…

And even “animated objects that correct people’s positions” – even more so beyond their strength. Yes, and they don’t need it, they were even ordered: “Grandmas must be done, grandmas!” …

However, I dare to draw attention to at least the Wikipedia article. Where, in particular, it says:

“Contemporaries called the apartment of the writer in Nizhny Novgorod (1902 – 1904 – L.V.) the “Gorky Academy”, and, according to V. Desnitsky, “an atmosphere of high spiritual mood” reigned in it. Representatives of the creative intelligentsia visited the writer almost daily in this apartment, and 30-40 cultural figures often gathered in the spacious living room. Among the guests were Leo Tolstoy, Leonid Andreev, Ivan Bunin, Anton Chekhov, Evgeny Chirikov, Ilya Repin, Konstantin Stanislavsky. The closest friend is Fyodor Chaliapin.

In his Nizhny Novgorod apartment, Gorky finished the play “At the Bottom”, felt the inspiring success after its productions in Russia and Europe, made sketches for the novel “Mother”, wrote the poem “The Man”, comprehended the outline of the play “Summer Residents”.

In 1904-1905 Maxim Gorky wrote the plays “Summer Residents”, “Children of the Sun”, “Barbarians”. For the revolutionary proclamation, and in connection with the execution on January 9, he was arrested and imprisoned in solitary confinement in the Peter and Paul Fortress. Famous artists Gerhart Hauptman, Anatole France, Auguste Rodin, Thomas Hardy, George Meredith, Italian writers Grazia Deledda, Mario Rapisardi, Edmondo de Amicis, Serbian writer Radoe Domanovich, composer Giacomo Puccini, philosopher Benedetto Croce and other representatives of the creative and the scientific world from Germany, France, England. Student demonstrations took place in Rome. Under public pressure 14 February 1905 released on bail.

In March 1928, Gorky celebrated his 60th birthday in Italy. Telegrams and letters of congratulations were sent to him by Stefan Zweig, Lion Feuchtwanger, Thomas and Heinrich Mann, John Galsworthy, HG Wells, Selma Lagerlöf, Sherwood Anderson, Upton Sinclair and other famous European writers.

“You were like a high arch thrown between two worlds – the past and the future, as well as between Russia and the West,” Romain Rolland wrote to Gorky in 1918″ [7].

…Aiming for the West, we should not destroy the “high arch”, don’t you think?..

    * * *

…Coming to the end of the first part of my notes dedicated to the unique, native Volgar, my favorite writer since childhood, I’ll remember the ending his poems “From a diary”, bitterly topical:

    …Here – armed cattle
    The earth bristled everywhere
    And blooms with bloody flowers,
    Your malice, Devil, merry!

    Crazy cries, groans,
    Wild howl of hatred,
    Millions of corpse workers –
    Isn’t this your holiday?

    Crushing the labor of millennia,
    Sparing neither temple nor palace,
    Fiery whips whip the earth
    Steel, iron, lead.

Everything that the mind was proud of,
What was given to us for happiness,
In a bloody whirlwind at once
    Turned into dust and dust.

On the way to freedom, happiness –
    Smoke poison of hatred.
    Champs bloody mouth
    Death like a crazy pig.

    How will we live then?
What will this horror bring us?
What now from hatred for people
    Will save my soul?

… How unbearable it is to feel hatred for him, who sang Love for man! To him, who created the poem in prose “Man”, I read it as a keepsake repeatedly both in my student years and after. To him, who gave Satin in the play “At the Bottom” the famous monologue, where –

“Is he – praying? Wonderful! A person can believe or not believe … that’s his business! A man is free… he pays for everything himself: for faith, for disbelief, for love, for intelligence – a man pays for everything himself, and therefore he is free!.. Man is the truth! This is huge! In this – all beginnings and ends . .. Everything is in a person, everything is for a person! Only man exists, everything else is the work of his hands and his brain! Human! It’s great! It sounds… proud! Human! You have to respect the person! Do not pity … do not humiliate him with pity … you must respect! Let’s drink to the man, Baron! It’s good … to feel like a man! .. I am a prisoner, a murderer, a cheater … well, yes! When I walk down the street, people look at me like I’m a swindler… and they step aside and look around… and often say to me – “Bastard! Charlatan! Work!” Work? For what? To be full? (Laughs.) I’ve always despised people who care too much about being fed… That’s not the point, Baron! Not in this case! The man is higher! Man is above satiety!..”

I am reading a letter from Alexei Maksimovich to Ilya Efimovich Repin, and… I feel sad:

“… I, a man, am dissatisfied with myself, a writer, because I read too much and books robbed my soul. From reading I have lost a huge amount of the original, my own, what is naturally characteristic of me. Having become a writer, I begin to be convinced that I am not free in my thoughts – like many others – that I sometimes operate on facts and thoughts that I read into myself from other people’s books, and did not experience directly myself, with my heart. It’s very embarrassing. this is not good, of course. Is it worthy of a person to shine with reflected light? Unworthy. I think that everyone should be free in their thoughts and feelings and speak only on their own behalf and for themselves, taking responsibility for everything said. It’s not good, after all, when a person is asked: how did you come to this or that thought? – and he would answer: I read it from someone. All of our modern literature seems to me to have been read … I do not like our modern literature also for its pessimism. Life is not as bad as they like to portray it in books, it is brighter. And a person in life is better than in a book, even a talented one. He is more difficult. In my opinion, writers offend people. Of course, I hate it too. What to do? Became a professional. This is bad, but it must be inevitable” [8; author’s italics – L.V.]

And, like the author, “…only a feeling of indignation and resentment for a person is born. I don’t know anything better, more complicated, more interesting than a person. He is everything. He even created God. Art is only one of the highest manifestations of his creative spirit, and therefore it is only a part of man. I am sure that a person is capable of infinite improvement, and all his activities will also develop along with him, along with him from century to century. I believe in the infinity of life, and I understand life as a movement towards the perfection of the spirit. But I also see that the development of a person has been going wrong for some time – our mind is developing and feelings are ignored. I think it’s bad for us. It is necessary that the intellect and instinct merge in harmonious harmony, and then, it seems to me, all of us and everything that surrounds us will be brighter, brighter, more joyful. I believe it is possible.

I don’t like smart people who don’t know how to feel. They are all evil, and evil low. Equally, I do not like people who preach morality, those who consider themselves called to judge everyone and everything. I always see the arrogance of the Pharisee in them and I am ready to laugh evilly at them.

What am I after all this? Don’t know. Every time I put this question before myself, I feel good. For I see that I do not yet belong anywhere, to any of our “parties”. I am glad about this, because it is freedom. And man really needs freedom, and he needs freedom to think in his own way more than freedom of movement. Not obeying anyone is happiness, isn’t it? To be the master of one’s own soul and not to accept someone else’s into it, impudently littering one’s own there, is that good?

I consider you so free and happy. God creates a nightingale and a spider, an elephant and a flea, and – everywhere he is a great creator, and in everything he is an artist, everywhere his love for life, everywhere – an intense desire to create a thing as better, smarter and brighter as possible. A person in all his activity – and in art most of all – must be artistic, i.e. handsome and strong like God” [8].

… Quite recently, on March 12, we celebrated the anniversary of V.I. Vernadsky. Undoubtedly, publications about Maxim Gorky and Vladimir Vernadsky E.N. are very interesting. Nikitin [9], I.L. Jezuitova – about the similarity of “the concepts of M. Gorky and V. Vernadsky about the inevitability of evolution and the perception of the special role of man in the knowledge of the world and the development of the Cosmos. The possibility of evolution reaching a new level, including the prospect of expanding power over inert matter, in the expansion of life beyond the Earth. This makes it possible to take a fresh look at the creative searches of the writer M. Gorky in a philosophical approach in search of truth, which was undoubtedly expressed in his work at the beginning of the 20th century” [10].

    V. Vernadsky treated M. Gorky with great respect, his letter to the writer has been preserved, many notes in Vernadsky’s diaries are dedicated to Gorky. So, on June 19, 1941, Vernadsky writes in his diary: “Yesterday is the fifth anniversary of Gorky’s death,” he recalls the trial of doctors associated with it [11]. He admits: “As I see from my notes, I appreciated it very early.”

A lot of interesting studies, publications on the topic “M. Gorky and Ukraine “” vshchent rozkolyyuchih” speculation about the “Ukrainophobia” of the writer.

I hope to get back on topic. And I want to conclude with the lines of a letter from Marina Tsvetaeva from Paris to Anna Teskova in Prague dated November 24, 1933:

“Nobel Prize. On the 26th I will sit on the stage and honor Bunin. To evade – to protest. I don’t protest, I just don’t agree, because Bunin is incomparably bigger: more, and more humane, and more original, and more necessary – Gorky. Gorky is an era, and Bunin is the end of an era. But – since this is politics, since the king of Sweden cannot pin an order on the communist Gorky … “[12].

Gorky is an era! And give us, God, to be at least a little worthy of our, alas, – the past, but not betrayed by us, not slandered – Epoch! And – who embodied it in his ever-living Word!

To know and believe: “The clouds of the sun will not hide, no, they won’t!”
