While they offer a tech-forward solution to a classic device, keyless locks don’t necessarily mean you won’t get locked out, or that you’ve fully safe-guarded your home

If you’ve left your keys at work one too many times or you are tired of opening the front door late at night for a forgetful teenager, you might be considering a keyless door lock system for your home. On the other hand, that Bluetooth device that never connects and the latest major data breach have you wondering if you can trust contemporary digital technology to keep your home safe. Read through our pros and cons of keyless door locks to ensure you make an informed purchase before you toss away your set of spare keys.
What Is a Keyless Door Lock?
Also called a smart or electronic lock, a keyless door lock is a lock that doesn’t require a key. Simple, right? Keyless door locks can use facial recognition, finger prints, fobs, or combination codes to lock and unlock doors. One of the most common types of keyless locks use a pin code.
Pros of a Keyless Entry System
No Key Needed
An obvious benefit, the idea of not having to carry a key around is alluring to many, especially those of us who tend to misplace things often. It’s one less thing to schlep, one less thing to worry about, and one less call to a local locksmith.
Allows Others Access

At work late and need your sister to stop at the house to feed the dogs? With a keyless lock, you don’t need to worry about making keys for extended family or neighbors, and won’t need to keep track of who has one and who doesn’t. Everyone who has the code can get in when they need to without much fuss. In addition, you won’t need to worry about hiding a key under a plant or a rock and worry about someone finding it and breaking in.
Helpful for Household Members With Mobility Issues
If someone in your home has mobility issues, a smart lock (often paired with and controlled by a smartphone) can offer them to say something as simple as “Hey Google, open the front door” to access the home. In addition, some people with disabilities such as severe arthritis may find even seemingly simple tasks, like turning a key in a door, painful to do, in which case a keyless lock can be of great benefit.
Cons of a Keyless Entry System
Can Be Hacked
The code to your lock is a password, just like the one you use you access your bank account at an ATM. Tech-savvy predators can hack—or even guess—this code. In addition, someone walking by might be able to peek over your shoulder and see the code you’ve entered to gain unwanted access later.
Tip: If you opt for a keyless lock, we recommend making your password difficult to guess. ‘1234’ just doesn’t cut it in today’s digital world.
They’re Expensive
An old-fashioned deadbolt costs between $20 and $50, but a keyless lock runs anywhere from $150 to $250, and the installation can also come with a hefty price tag as they’re much more complicated to install. In addition, you need to make sure the keyless lock’s orientation matches your door; some only lock left or right.
Security Is Not Guaranteed
A lot of people think a keyless door lock offers greater security, but there are still many ways an expert burglar can enter your home. They can do this by either picking the keyless lock (some models offer the option for you to use a key, so the break-in method would be the same with a regular lock), or breaking in through a window. Check your lock options’ security grades and see whether the keyless lock rates higher than your regular deadbolt; a grade 1 is the highest grading, usually used for commercial or industrial buildings.
You Might Forget the Code
If you can barely remember your spouse’s birthday, a lock with a code might not be a good idea— especially since you should change your keyless lock’s code often to prevent the number keys from wearing out and making your code obvious to intruders.
Risk of a Power Failure
As with all technology, if there’s a power failure, you might be stuck without a connection and, subsequently, no way to get inside your home. Some keyless locks do have a backup power system built into them but they usually don’t have a very long life.
Can Be Unattractive
Most of the more basic keyless locks on the market are not built with design in mind. They’re essentially metal boxes, jutting out from your door, and some people prefer the classic look of a deadbolt.

Electronic safe lock Diplomat REDL2
How to change the batteries in the Diplomat safe?
Different models of Diplomat safes use different batteries and their compartments are located in different places.
Lock Diplomat EDL77
By sliding the battery cover to the right, you can replace 4 alkaline (alcaline) AA batteries.
Lock Diplomat EDL88
By sliding the battery cover to the right, you can replace 4 alkaline (alcaline) AA batteries.
Diplomat lock REDL2
By pushing the keyboard to the right, you can rotate the keyboard housing to the left by slightly pulling it towards you and then replace the 4 AAA size alkaline batteries.
Lock Diplomat REDL3
By pushing the keyboard to the right, you can rotate the keyboard housing to the left by slightly pulling it towards you and then replace the 4 alkaline (alcaline) AAA batteries.
Diplomat TFL lock
By turning the Diplomat TFL lock keypad slightly clockwise, you can rotate the keypad housing to the left by slightly pulling it towards you and then replace the 4 AA alkaline batteries.
Diplomat TSL lock
The battery compartment of the Diplomat TSL lock is located inside the safe on the back of the door. Under the plastic cover are 4 alkaline (alcaline) AA batteries. To open the safe when the batteries are completely dead, you will need a 9V alkaline battery (Kron type). It must be attached to the contacts located on the bottom of the keyboard, as shown in the figure.
Lock Diplomat NABI / h300
The battery compartment with 4 alkaline (alcaline) AAA batteries is located under the keypad of the electronic lock. To replace the batteries, you must first unscrew the keypad lock screw, located to the left of button 4. You will need a special hexagonal key, which is included with the safe upon delivery. What is the difference between EDL77 and EDL88 locks?
Locks in the classic Diplomat form factor with a battery compartment under the outer cover to the right of the buttons were produced in many different functional variations. Two main versions are relevant today. Classic EDL77 and version with digital display EDL88.
The main difference between these locks, apart from the indicator of the entered code, is the algorithm for applying the second user code. Both locks come with the same code, but a special procedure allows you to activate the second code. But the behavior of the locks, when the second code is turned on, is completely different.
EDL77 allows you to open the safe independently with both the first and second codes. That is, you get a safe that can be used by two people independently of each other.
EDL88 switches to the so-called conveyor opening mode when the second code is activated. That is, in order to open the safe, you must first enter one code and then the second.
What is the difference between REDL2 and REDL3 locks?
The Diplomat REDL lock models are fully functional analogues of the basic EDL locks. The REDL2 lock is completely similar to the EDL77 lock, and the REDL3 lock, equipped with a combination indicator, is similar to the EDL88 lock.
Buy Diplomat lock cylinder?
The first thing you should know is that we, the company TREZOR, have been the exclusive distributors of the Korean factory Diplomat Safe since 1995. Therefore, there is no alternative source for spare parts and accessories for Diplomat safes.
Secondly, different designs of key locks are installed on different models of Diplomat safes. And they changed in different years of release. Therefore, you can’t just take and replace one lock with another. Be sure to know the model and serial number of the safe.
Third – even if you get the correct model of the lock in your hands, you will not be able to replace it yourself. There are design nuances of the safe itself, ignorance of which is guaranteed to lead to the failure of the entire safe.
Conclusion – no need to engage in Kulibin. If you really need to replace the key lock (although we do not know reasonable reasons for this, because if you lose the key, it is easy and inexpensive to get a duplicate from us), make a request to our service department and do not contact outside craftsmen. They will only hurt.
Buy keypad for Diplomat electronic lock?
This is meaningless. You cannot buy and replace one keyboard. Diplomat electronic locks are produced as a set and the keypad is actually sewn to the lock actuator. Which, with the same outwardly keyboard, can be completely different for different models of safes.
In addition, the keyboard replacement procedure is not easy and must be performed by trained and qualified personnel. Otherwise, the failure of the entire safe is almost guaranteed.
If something has happened to your electronic lock, make a request to our service department. No one but us knows how to do this and has no spare parts.

How an electronic lock works.
In operation mode with code keypad only.
After entering the 4-6 digital code and its coincidence with the code written in the lock, the engagement mechanism inside the lock body is triggered, and the lever locking mechanism is automatically lifted – the lock opens. An additional pressure bolt serves as an indicator of the open state of the lock and provides an alarm when the locker door is broken. After each opening of the lock, the access code is erased and a new access code is required for re-locking, which is very convenient when using the lockers by different people. A permanent opening code is also possible, which is very convenient for personal lockers, when the user is always the same. If the client has forgotten the access code, the lock can be opened using the UNIKEY electronic master key (included).
The lock allows you to change the length of the code word and the lock operation mode: changing lock opening code, permanent lock opening code, access by sequential code dialing and using an identification key of the UNIKEY type.
Identification key + code keypad in operation.
The client locks the door, touches the contact pad with the identification key, presses the (*) key – asterisk, enters the 4-8 digit code and finally presses the key (#) – hash. The lock will automatically lock.
To open the lock, you need to present the identification key, then enter the correct code and the lock will automatically open. Otherwise, sound and light indication of an access error will follow.
If the customer has forgotten the access code, the lock can be opened using the UNIKEY electronic master key (optional).
