Without a doubt, JBL’s Boombox has made a reputation for itself for being one of the best party speakers in the market. On top of that, they are known for being big and easy to carry around because of their convenient handle.

With the JBL Boombox 1’s overwhelming success in sales back in August of 2017, audiophiles were definitely on the edge of their seats waiting for the JBL Boombox 2’s release, which was just last April 2020.

But the question is, is the JBL Boombox 2 really better than the JBL Boombox 1?

Here are the differences between both speakers broken down into different categories so, by the time you are done reading this article, you will be able to make an informed purchase decision.

Price

JBL Boombox 2 JBL Boombox 1
✖ $450-$480 ✔ $370

To begin with, the JBL Boombox 1 had a retail price of $450 back in 2017 when it was just released but because of the increasing demand for this speaker, its price spiked up to $500 in mid-2019.

But this 2022, you can get the JBL Boombox 1 for more or less $370. On the other hand, the JBL Boombox 2 retailed for $500 when it was released but now you can get them for around $450-$480

Both speakers routinely go on sale in JBL stores so if you want to get a discount, you should wait for a sale day or event.

Colors

JBL Boombox 2 JBL Boombox 1
✖ 2 Color Options ✔ 3 Color Options

Both the JBL Boombox 1 and JBL Boombox 2 do not have many color variants.

The JBL Boombox 1 has 3 colors which are forest green, black, and camouflage while the JBL Boombox 2 only has 2 colors which are black and camouflage.

Design

JBL Boombox 2 JBL Boombox 1
✔ Looks More Attractive ✖ Traditional Design
✔ Upgraded Carrying Handle ✖ Typical Carrying Handle
✔ More Prominent Battery Indicator ✖ Old Battery Indicator
✖ Slightly Heavier ✔ Lighter

In terms of the design, both the JBL Boombox 1 and JBL Boombox 2 almost have the same design.

Both speakers have their passive radiators exposed to the sides like the JBL Flip and JBL Charge series. In addition to that, both speakers’ whole body is covered in durable fabric so constant wear and tear would not be a problem.

Both speakers also have their control buttons located underneath the carrying handle.

For cosmetic changes, the JBL Boombox 2 looks more attractive than its predecessor

It has more stylish passive radiators since the logos on the passive radiators are the same as the passive radiators from JBL’s Charge 4 speaker in which the logos are more emphasized with added minimalist designs.

The carrying handle of the JBL Boombox 2 is also upgraded with grip lines to prevent slipping

Unlike the JBL Boombox 1, the JBL Boombox 2 has a more prominent indicator light for its battery life that is conveniently located beneath the JBL emblem logo so that you can easily see how much battery is left in one glance.

When it comes to the dimensions, the JBL Boombox 2 is a tad bigger than the JBL Boombox with a little more height and width added to it. The JBL Boombox 2 is heavier weighing 13 pounds while the JBL Boombox 1 only weighs 11.5 pounds.

Although a 1.5 difference in weight is not that much of a difference, it is noticeable.

Battery

JBL Boombox 2 JBL Boombox 1
= Same Battery Life = Same Battery Life
✔ 2 USB A Ports for Charging ✖ 1 USB for Charging

Both the JBL Boombox 1 and JBL Boombox 2 have the same advertised battery life of 24 hours. Keep in mind that 24 hours of playtime is only achievable if used on medium volumes.

Just like the JBL Charge speaker series, the JBL Boombox series also have USB A outputs for charging your devices which means you can use these speakers as a power bank.

The JBL Boombox 1 has 2 USB A outputs so you can charge 2 devices at the same time. The JBL Boombox 2 on the other hand only has 1.

The JBL Boombox 2’s speakers have been upgraded to 30-watt speakers whereas the JBL Boombox 1 is making use of 20-watt speakers which means there is a difference in both sound and power consumption.

Nonetheless, both speakers are capable of playing a solid 8 hours of high-volume listening.

Bluetooth Version

JBL Boombox 2 JBL Boombox 1
✔ Bluetooth 5.1 ✖ Bluetooth 4.2

The Bluetooth 5.1 version of the JBL Boombox 2 is without a doubt better than the JBL Boombox 1’s Bluetooth 4.2 version.

Nonetheless, the Bluetooth 4.2 version of the JBL Boombox 1 is still a stable Bluetooth connection but just with a little delay for watching videos and movies. In addition to that, its Bluetooth range is shorter.

This is a problem for those who watch videos or movies with the JBL Boombox 1 due to the latency or delay.

Although this is not a big deal for some people since you can still connect 2 devices to play DJ with your friends

The Bluetooth 5.1 version of the JBL Boombox 2 also has a little delay but is not as noticeable as the JBL Boombox 1’s Bluetooth 4. 2 delay.

Both speakers are strictly utilizing low complexity subband coding or better known as SBC. There is no AAC or aptX support.

Waterproof Rating

JBL Boombox 2 JBL Boombox 1
= IPX7 Waterproof Rating = IPX7 Waterproof Rating

Both the JBL Boombox 1 and JBL Boombox 2 have the same waterproof rating which is IPX7. This means that it is fully waterproof and it can be submerged in water for up to 1 meter and for 30 minutes.

With this rating, you won’t have to worry about rain or accidentally dropping the speaker into a pool.

However, since it is not IP67-rated, it is not dust and sand-proof so it is recommended that you place it on a table if you go to beaches.

Speaker Specifications

JBL Boombox 2 JBL Boombox 1
✔ 40-watt Speaker ✖ 30-watt Speaker

Surprisingly, both the JBL Boombox 1 and JBL Boombox 2 have the same speaker setups. Which are dual 4-inch woofers, dual 20 mm tweeters, and dual passive radiators at the sides.

But as mentioned, the JBL Boombox 2 has a more powerful output power since its speaker setups are upgraded.

Sound

JBL Boombox 2 JBL Boombox 1
✔  Louder✔ More Bass ✖ Lacks Volume✖ Lacks Bass

With the same speaker setup, does that mean that it has the same sound?

No, because the JBL Boombox 2 is 30 watts while the JBL Boombox 1 is only 20 watts

However, the JBL Boombox 2 no longer has an integrated Indoor mode and Outdoor mode. This means that the JBL Boombox 2 only has one sound signature while the JBL Boombox 1 is versatile.

If you plug your JBL Boombox 2 into its charger, the 30 watts will convert to 40 watts. You will significantly notice the speaker be louder with a little more bass.

The same goes for the JBL Boombox 1. When plugged in with its charger it will covert from 20 watts to 30 watts.

Basically, the JBL Boombox 2 is slightly better than the JBL Boombox 1. The JBL Boombox 2 has a little more bass and it is also a little louder.

Overall, if you were to turn around and guess which JBL Boombox is playing, you could hardly tell the difference.

The JBL Boombox 1 sounds a tad brighter with its Outdoor mode activated since this mode specifically reduces the bass a bit and then increases the mids and highs up a bit as well so that it sounds louder and spread out further.

So, is it worth the upgrade?

You would be surprised to find out that despite that, the JBL Boombox 1 still manages to catch up with the overall sound quality of the JBL Boombox 2 whether it is plugged in or not.

These two speakers have the same battery, speaker setup, and waterproof rating. Their speaker specifications, modes, price, colors, and Bluetooth connectivity are the only difference.

At the end of your purchase decision, it will have to come down to personal preference since the upgrade on the JBL Boombox 2 is minimal. Nevertheless, these are great party speakers that are easy to carry around!

JBL Boombox vs Boombox 2: Well, depends! (Jun 2023)

At the end of the day, the JBL Boombox 2 (see image) is better than the base model, though not that much. You’ll get a bit more sound output and a more advanced Bluetooth connection, but in return, you’ll need to deal with a slightly bigger and heavier device.

JBL’s Boombox line is the second-largest in their repertoire of portable Bluetooth speakers, following the behemoth PartyBox models (see my PartyBox 110 vs 310 article).

The JBL Boombox and JBL Boombox 2 are near-identical in design, with only minimal variations in their sizes and weights.

They’re perfect for outdoor parties on account of their incredible loudness and durability.

In summary, the JBL Boombox 2 offers a slight edge in loudness and clarity over its predecessor, but only when plugged in and cranked up to louder volumes. This is thanks to the extra 20W output power the Boombox 2’s woofers provide. Another notable difference would be the updated Bluetooth in the newer model, which allows for improved range and better syncing in video playback.

Let’s get to their nuts and bolts.

Sound Quality

Let me tell you something right off the bat.

The sound quality performance you’ll end up getting from a speaker will always depend on your room acoustics – particularly room dimensions and speaker positions.

The impact of the combination of these two is actually so strong that in most cases, it doesn’t even make sense to utter a single word on sound quality without speaking of them.

This is also why it’s not unusual to see completely different reviews of the same speaker.

In one case the speaker might be placed in a sweet spot inside the room and hence the user might be satisfied. In other cases the same speaker might be ill placed and hence user might even have returned it.

  • Remove vocals from any audio

Try Lalal.ai to remove vocals or split any other instrument!

The point most people miss here is that it mostly isn’t even about the engineering behind the speaker itself. It’s about where you place the speaker inside which room.

So, in order to solve this problem, I’ve partnered with Acoustics and Audio Engineering PhD Andrea Cicero from AC Acustica and created Soundton – a simple, 2D, browser accessible online speaker placement calculator.

With Soundton, now there’s a way to figure the sound quality of most speakers before you buy them.

The end colormap provides you the locations with the best (green) and worst (red) acoustics.

ASAP Science also made a video on the loudest and quietest rooms in the world. A mind blowing example of the importance of acoustics (play time adjusted video below).

Other parameters such as the age/materials of the building, the furniture & carpets in place, etc can and will, of course, have an effect on room acoustics, too. But their impact is much less in comparison.

If you check out the spec sheet of the JBL Boombox on the manufacturer’s official website, you’ll find that it boasts two 4-inch woofers with a total output of 60W when plugged in and 40W when in battery mode.

As for the JBL Boombox 2, it also features two 4-inch woofers but with a bit of added oomph. In AC mode, you’ll get a cumulative output of 80W, and in battery mode, it’s lowered slightly to 60W.

Both models include two 20mm tweeters for better rendering high-frequency sounds and added sound imaging.

The woofer wattage dictates the overall loudness of the device and can also help audio sound clearer. Since both speakers have the same frequency response of 50 – 20,000 Hz, this means that the sound profiles are essentially the same.

With all that being said, the JBL Boombox 2 has a modest edge in overall sound performance.

Size And Weight

If you’re seeing the JBL Boombox and JBL Boombox 2 for the first time, it can be a little tough to tell them apart. Both speakers share a similar cylindrical shape with a large overarching handle and the trademark JBL logo in the middle. But if you take a close look at the specs, you’ll see that the JBL Boombox has dimensions of 458.5 x 254.5 x 195.5mm, whereas the JBL Boombox 2 sits at 484 x 201 x 256 mm.

This means that the newer model is a fair bit bigger than the original, albeit slightly shorter. It’s also noticeably heavier, as it weighs 13 lbs compared to the JBL Boombox’s 11. 57 lbs. That’s a 1.43-pound difference.

How big and heavy a device can matter quite a bit as far as portable speakers are concerned, so if you prefer something a little smaller and lighter, then you may be better off sticking with the original.

The JBL Boombox (see image) actually features two USB ports that you can use to siphon a charge from the speaker battery. In comparison, the JBL Boombox 2 only has one.

Connectivity

One of the improvements the JBL Boombox 2 has over its older sibling is the improved Bluetooth technology. The original came with Bluetooth version 4.2, while its successor sports version 5.1. As a result, the newer model can stay connected to a device up to 50 feet away. The JBL Boombox, on the other hand, only has a range of up to approximately 33 feet.

Bluetooth 5.1 also provides better audio syncing when watching movies, which is exceedingly important if you plan on using your speaker to watch movies and TV shows.

Bluetooth aside, the older model actually features two USB ports that you can use to siphon a charge from the speaker battery. In comparison, the JBL Boombox 2 only has one.

Speakerphone

Although it’s not a feature that’s used too often these days, it’s worth noting that the original JBL Boombox has a speakerphone built into it, while its successor does not. This isn’t of much consequence since most of the devices that connect to the speaker have their own speakerphone, but some users may be specifically looking for a portable speaker with a speakerphone feature.

Price

As of writing, the JBL Boombox is priced at $399.99, while the JBL Boombox 2 costs $499.95.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the JBL Boombox 2 is better than the base model, though not that much. You’ll get a bit more sound output and a more advanced Bluetooth connection, but in return, you’ll need to deal with a slightly bigger and heavier device.

As for value for money, it really isn’t worth upgrading to the JBL Boombox 2 if you already own the original. But if you’re a first-time investor in the JBL Boombox line and you can’t find the original on sale, then you’re better off picking up the JBL Boombox 2.

This is the JBL Boombox 2. It has a smaller battery and is heavier than the first generation Boombox. Again, Zrada and JBL turn into Apple and do not really change anything in their devices, because “People are grabbing”, or can the novelty surprise us with something?

What is the difference from the first generation?

First of all, people want to know – what’s the difference between the first and second generation? I answer! There are several main differences:

  • • Sound, it’s cooler. Like. About him a little later.
  • • The battery capacity has dropped by half, but the autonomy is still the same. About her later.
  • • Weight and dimensions increased, here diz.
  • • New version of bluetooth ‒ 5.1 eats less energy and beats further. Like
  • • Updated design.

This is for those who would like to know the thesis about the column. I invite everyone else to get acquainted with the novelty in more detail.

Package

Unboxing JBL speakers – my fan is straight. I love to sit down like this and start looking at the box with its cool prints, then open it and get everything from the inside. Inside, everything is the same – a wild power supply and waste paper. JBL, please be ECO, make a QR code instead of all this waste paper and let us all see it on the Internet, well, kamon!

Sound

What happened to the sound in the JBL Boombox? It was loud and quite bassist, and somewhere even very detailed. At home it’s bass-bass-bass, in nature at high volume it’s quite neutral, and at low background volume it’s quite soft. The two modes collected sound narrower and wider, thus there was a mode for nature, and another for rooms.
Removed those switches and just made the sound more bassy and detailed. You will not hear any super-differences, but the bass in the room was added notably, if you put the speaker somewhere in the corner, then the whole apartment will be flooded with boom-boom-boom. But in open spaces, it seemed to me that details were added very well. And, the most interesting thing is that the column loves good records – don’t laugh, but Pink Floyd and Dair Straits did a very good job, the same well-mixed Bruno Mars is already losing. And it’s on a portable speaker, yes.
Slightly rocked the power and now when the cable is connected, the Boombox yells louder – 40 watts per channel, of which there are two. Boombox was 30 watts in the past. But this applies exclusively to a wired connection, without mains power, there are still the same 30 watts per channel. And the speakers, like last time, are 4 pieces – 2 large woofers and 2 tweeters.

Design and ergonomics

Design and its changes are almost pointless to discuss, it’s just cosmetics and facelift, nothing new. The handle is slightly different, stand, diffusers, plug. Well, in short, we slightly adjusted the appearance for 2020. In general, the first Boombox still looks great, so at a glance you might not even notice the differences. The only remark is the micro USB service port. Seriously? Yes, give it up already!

Waterproof IPX7 as before. You can go to the beach and use the column in sand, water and mud, but without fanaticism. Weight, it is not entirely clear why, has become more by 600 grams, which is not very noticeable, but still

Autonomy

We already started talking about autonomy at the beginning of the review. Yes, there is 10,000 mAh instead of 20,000 mAh, as it was in the first Boombox. But! Here are the same 24 hours of autonomy. True, the column can work as a power bank and, of course, you could charge your smartphone more times with 20,000 mAh than with 10,000 mAh. But who buys a column as a power bank?

Pouches

I have ambivalent feelings from the new boombox – it seems that almost nothing has changed, but the sound was tightened up and facelifted under 20 20 year old The starting price in our country for the JBL Boombox 2 is lower than it was for the first generation – UAH 11,500 against 13,500, which is good and only pluses from this. But in turn, at the time of the review, the first Boombox threw off the price so well that it becomes a very interesting solution. In any case, the choice is yours.
