How to read SD and microSD cards on iPhone and iPad
Want to import photos and videos from an SD or microSD card directly to your iPhone or iPad? Read along for a step-by-step guide on how to make it happen.
Unlike Android smartphones that often include built-in ability to read and add extra storage via microSD memory cards, Apple’s iPhone and iPad require an adapter to import photos and videos from memory cards. At face value, that may seem frustrating, but Apple is able to offer better security by controlling how memory cards can work with iOS devices.
Keep in mind that using SD and microSD cards with iPhone and iPad is limited to importing photos and videos to the Photos app. If you’re looking to save, store, and move files more generally, you’ll want to pick up a Lightning flash drive like SanDisk’s iXpand.
How to read SD and microSD memory cards on iPhone
- Pick up an SD/microSD adapter
Apple’s official Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader runs $29. If you have an iPad Pro with USB-C, Apple’s USB-C to SD Card Camera Reader sells for $39. These just work with regular size SD cards, so you’ll need a microSD to SD adapter if you don’t have one already.
Alternately, the top-selling Lightning to SD/microSD card reader on Amazon is priced at $13. It also has slots for both SD and microSD cards, so you don’t need to worry about the SD to microSD adapter like with Apple’s card readers.
A great alternative to Apple’s $40 USB-C version is Uni’s USB-C to SD card reader for $15. It also has separate slots for SD and microSD cards.
- Plug in the SD card adapter to your iPhone or iPad
- Insert the SD or microSD card from which you want to import photos and videos
- The Photos app will automatically launch and give you the option to import media
- If it doesn’t, open the Photos app and tap the Import tab at the bottom

How to connect an SD or microSD card to iPhone and iPad
Many iPhone and iPad users have dreamed of being able to connect memory cards to their devices since the release of iPhone 3G. A little later, such a solution appeared, but it required the installation of a jailbreak, and then the “native” adapter still waited from Apple. Nevertheless, the world’s first Lightning card reader with the ability to read and write was developed not at all in Cupertino, but in a small company Adata.
Last fall, the latter introduced the Lightning Card Reader, a special adapter for iPhone and iPad to work with SD and microSD memory cards. We have waited for our copy and are ready to talk about our impressions, and most importantly, to answer the question: is such a card reader really needed?
Frankly, everything – from packaging to design – gives out an Apple product in the Lightning Card Reader, but this is not at all the case. Yes, in appearance it resembles standard “apple” adapters, but the inscription Adata dispels all doubts. The packaging is simple and convenient, and inside there is nothing superfluous: only a card reader and a small instruction.
The first thing we immediately noticed was the weight. The accessory is almost weightless and will weigh your bag no more than a full pack of chewing gum. Very cool for photographers who already have backpacks weighing at least 10 kilograms.
The card reader has a microSD card slot on the top and an SD card slot on the bottom, supports up to 256 GB. It is curious that microSDs are inserted correctly, but regular SDs must first be turned upside down. Either this is a design idea, or the connectors are mixed up. In any case, the decision is strange. Lightning Card Reader
Lightning Card Reader In the same way, the card reader works in the opposite direction – for example, you can “upload” a video from an iPad to an SD card. Before Adata, other accessories were read-only, not write-only.
The application provides the ability to get quick access to photos and videos on SD, so as not to climb through folders, as well as create a backup copy of the device on the card. And you don’t need iTunes anymore, because Power Drive is also a cool file manager. All in one, as they say.
The only thing the Lightning Card Reader lacks, according to our observations, is speed. Copying video takes longer than you’d like, and if you’re uploading a 4K video with a GoPro, you might still have time to have lunch. Otherwise, this is one of the best (and almost the only) solutions that can be found. The accessory is certified under the MFi program, which cannot be said about cheap Chinese fakes.
There are quite a few cases of using such a device, but all of them are related to cameras in one way or another: for example, quickly copy a picture from a Canon Mark III to an iPhone and post it on Instagram. You can, of course, copy movies to the iPad, or even watch them on the plane directly from the memory card.
In general, see for yourself whether such an accessory is needed for your daily needs. You can learn more about the Lightning Card Reader on the manufacturer’s website, and purchase it online (for example, on eBay).
