Is It Still Worth Buying a PS4 in 2023?

While the PlayStation 5 is Sony’s latest console, the PlayStation 4 is still on the market, at least as a pre-owned system. The question is: should you buy a PS4 in 2023?

Let’s look at some of the reasons why buying a PS4 still might be worthwhile for you, along with some cautions about buying the console so late into its life.

PS4 and PS5 Pricing in 2023

It’s difficult to give an exact market price for the PS4 at this time since the console is primarily sold pre-owned and through store bundles. Depending on when you check, the PS4 Slim page on Sony’s website is either listed as Out of Stock or with its launch price of $300.

As a baseline, the manufacturer’s set price of the PS4 Slim is $300, while the PS4 Pro is $400.

The major difference between these is that the PS4 Pro can play games at 4K resolution due to its more powerful hardware. Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t dropped the suggested price of either system since the launch of the PS5.

When shopping pre-owned, you may also see the original PS4 model. Aside from its larger size and a few minor tweaks, this older model is effectively identical to the PS4 Slim.

In contrast, the PS5 Digital Edition (which lacks a disc drive) is $400, while the standard PS5 is $500. Pricing aside, there are still potential reasons to consider a PS4 if you can’t find a PS5 (or don’t want to go next-gen yet).

The PS4 Has an Excellent Library of Games…

It’s no secret that owning a PS4 grants you access to a vast catalog of games. This includes the best PS4 exclusives like God of War and Ratchet & Clank, third-party titans like Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed, indie games, and remasters of classic PlayStation games.

If you don’t already have another console or a gaming PC, the PS4 provides a great way to play tons of games. This is especially the case due to the revamped PlayStation Plus service introduced in June 2022. By paying more for the Extra or Premium tier, you can access hundreds of top titles from the PS4 and older PlayStation consoles. If you’re just jumping into the PlayStation lineup, that’s a lot of value compared to buying games individually.

However, the PS4 is a hard sell in 2023 if you’re primarily looking for its exclusives.

…But Many PS4 Games Are Playable Elsewhere

Thankfully, the PS5 is backward-compatible and thus able to play almost every PS4 title. This means if you own a digital game on PS4 (or a PS4 disc and the standard PS5), you can play it on your PS5 while taking advantage of the more powerful hardware.

At the time of writing, all PS5 owners with any PlayStation Plus subscription get access to the PlayStation Plus Collection. This gives access to several top PS4 games like Persona 5, Resident Evil 7, and Bloodborne at no additional charge. However, these titles will no longer be available starting on May 9, 2023, removing one perk of upgrading to a PS5.

Some, but not all, of the games in the PS Plus Collection are also part of the Extra and Premium PS Plus tiers, so you can still play them if you upgrade your subscription. You can’t access the PS Plus Collection without a PS5, but you can subscribe to PS Plus Extra or Premium on PS4.

PS4 games run faster on PS5, thanks to its built-in SSD. Just keep in mind that the PS5 comes with a limited 825GB of storage, so those PS4 games will add up quickly. If you need more space on your PS5, you can run PS4 games via an external USB drive or an M.2 SSD, but both of these incur an additional cost.

As it turns out, PlayStation consoles aren’t the only place to play PlayStation titles. A few games that were once exclusive to the PS4, such as Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War, are now available on PC via Steam. Additionally, PlayStation Plus is available on PC. The service, formerly known as PlayStation Now, allows you to stream many top PS4 (and earlier) titles to your computer, as long as you have a decent PC and internet connection. So if you already have a PC and just want to try a few exclusive games, a PS4 isn’t worth it for you. And if you’re mostly interested in multi-platform games, a PS4 doesn’t offer the best value—more on this below.

How Long Will the PS4 Receive Support?

In January 2021, Sony Japan confirmed that it had ceased production of almost all PS4 models. This was unexpected, since the company had earlier claimed it would support the PS4 for several more years.

By now, the existing supply of PS4s has largely dried up. You won’t find new PS4s available for sale at Best Buy, Amazon, or GameStop today. Your options for buying a PS4 are limited to pre-owned models at these stores, on local marketplace websites, and similar.

Sony dropping support for the console is a sign that you shouldn’t buy it. A discontinued console will soon stop receiving games, and Sony likely won’t offer hardware support for it much longer either.

But if you do get a PS4 in 2023, how long should you expect game support to last? To estimate, we can look back at the last console generation.

The PS4’s Expected Game Lifetime

The PlayStation 3 was released in 2006 and discontinued in 2016 in North America. It received cross-generation titles until the end of its life. For example, 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III was the last Call of Duty title released for the system, though it was a watered-down version with no campaign mode.

It was a similar story for PlayStation-exclusive games. MLB The Show 16 was the final PS3 version of the yearly series published by Sony. Prior to this, 2014’s LittleBigPlanet 3 was the last major Sony-published title on the system.

The PS4 arrived in 2013, when the PS3 was seven years old. Since the PS5 launched in 2020, this puts the PS4 on the same timeline as the last generation—though the existence of the PS4 Pro (launched in 2016) complicates this a bit.

Horizon Forbidden West was released on both PS5 and PS4 in February 2022 (after being delayed from its planned 2021 release date). In contrast, 2021’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a major PlayStation exclusive, is PS5-only.

March 2022’s Gran Turismo 7 is available on both PS4 and PS5, while God of War Ragnarök also landed on both systems when it launched in November 2022. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II launched in October 2022 on both consoles; the March 2023 Resident Evil 4 remake is also for both PS4 and PS5.

Meanwhile, Square Enix’s Forspoken is PS5-only, and Final Fantasy XVI will also skip the PS4 when it launches in 2023.

Whether you’ll need a PS5 to play the next big game is thus uncertain. From these trends, we would expect the PS4 to stop receiving cross-generation titles after 2023. The PS4 Pro may receive a different treatment, but Sony hasn’t made a distinction between PS4 models for any releases since the PS5 came out.

Should You Buy a PS4 in 2023?

Looking at all these considerations, is the PS4 worth buying in 2023? Probably not, but it depends on your situation.

If you want to play a lot of titles that are only available on PS4 and you don’t have another game console, then the PS4 still has a bit of worth. The PS4 Pro is more future-proofed, but since its price is close to a PS5, we’d recommend sticking to a PS4 Slim if you do buy a PS4. If you can find a refurbished model from a trusted source, or a gently used model from a responsible owner, you should be able to find one for a reasonable price. We wouldn’t recommend paying more than $200 for a PS4 in 2023.

With a PS4, you can still enjoy cross-play with PS5 players in many games. Plus, you can take most of your games with you when you upgrade to a PS5 (either through backward compatibility or free upgrade offers). But you’re mostly buying access to older titles with the PS4, since not all new games will launch on the system over the next year.

If you see yourself buying a PS5 in the next year, we’d recommend waiting for that instead. It doesn’t sense to spend $300 on a PS4 now, only to spend $500 on a PS5 shortly after. In the meantime, you might consider trying a few games using PS Plus or Steam on your PC, if your machine can handle it.

If you’re not interested in PlayStation exclusives at all, consider a Nintendo Switch instead. That console launched in 2017, but still offers a lot for the price. You get a system that you can play at home or on the go with a wide variety of first-party Nintendo titles, plus tons of third-party ports and indie games.

The Switch will likely receive support for longer than the PS4; just keep in mind that it’s not as powerful. As a result, cross-platform games like Doom Eternal and Overwatch 2 are not as smooth on Switch.

Another great option is the Xbox Series S, which is a solid contender in this console generation. That system is also $300, and while it has a small 512GB of space and isn’t as powerful as the PS5, it’s ultra-fast and has a huge library of Xbox games across generations. You also get access to the excellent Game Pass service, which is a lot simpler than the new PS Plus and offers better-quality games. For a casual player, it’s a much better investment than the aging PS4.

You won’t get PlayStation exclusives, but the Series S can play all multiplatform games like Battlefield and Madden.

The PS4’s Legacy Lives On

As we’ve seen, there are some situations where it could make sense to buy a PS4 right now. But as the system continues to age, we don’t recommend buying a PlayStation 4 in most cases. It’s smarter to wait for a PS5, get PlayStation exclusives on PC, or get another console instead of paying for this old system. After all, the PS4 turns 10 years old in 2023.

Buying a modern console, especially once more games arrive for it, is a better investment of your money. It just requires a little patience for now.

The PlayStation 4 has made waves in the gaming industry with the staggering volume of incredible platform exclusive PS4 titles that have been released for the console. This includes everything from earlier releases such as the eerie and arcane Bloodborne and the epic franchise-concluding Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, to more recent titles like the ubiquitous Game of the Year winner God of War and the massively successful Marvel’s Spider-Man.

These are just a drop in the bucket in the long list of critically acclaimed titles that are available only on the PlayStation platform. The quality being delivered on a regular basis by Sony’s first-party studios are a big reason my so many gamers favour the PlayStation 4 console as their main choice.

PlayStation Pro and 4K gaming

The flagship model of the PlayStation 4 family is the PlayStation 4 Pro, a more powerful console capable of 4K resolution gaming, streaming, and more. When playing on the PlayStation 4 Pro games are optimized for the best graphics and performance possible, with incredible 4K resolution textures and graphics, shorter load times, and increased frame rate stability. The PlayStation 4 Pro console is also capable of streaming video in 4K resolution, including visual media purchased or rented from the PlayStation Network and digital store, as well as from all your favourite streaming services such as Netflix, YouTube, and more.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series were released in November 2020, but their launch was probably the most problematic in history due to the coronavirus and the shortage of semiconductors. The shortage of current consoles continues even now – in mid-2022.

I decided in advance that at the start of the ninth generation I would take the Xbox Series X, and sold the basic Xbox One and PlayStation 4 shortly before the console was released. I wanted to buy a PS5 for a year, but, you guessed it, this did not happen. In April, I decided to take a radical step and buy the previous generation console again, but not the regular one, but the Pro version.

In this article, I will talk in detail about the reasons for buying a PS4 and share my impressions of using it after a year and a half of playing on the Xbox Series X. As it turned out, even now the pros of the console outweigh the cons.

Why

In fact, the main reason for buying a PlayStation 4 is the impossibility of getting a current Sony console. The Eldorado network sent me a “gold” coupon in February for the purchase of the device, but even with it I couldn’t buy a PS5.

Soon, Sony suspended deliveries to Russia, and the price of the disk version of the console jumped sharply at Avito. For example, at the end of April, a used PlayStation 5 cost at least 70 thousand in my region (Vologda region). I was not ready to give such an amount for the console – even if it was desirable.

Initially, I wanted to leave the idea of ​​buying a PlayStation until better times, but then an idea flashed through my head: why not return to PS4? Moreover, Sony is still releasing its most anticipated games (for example, Horizon Forbidden West) on it.

Yes, in terms of graphics and performance, the PS4 versions of the new games are inferior to the PlayStation 5. However, I thought it would be better to still play what you want, and not wait for the current console to resume shipping to stores. And to be honest, I believe even less that the prices for Avito will drop.

Other reasons for the purchase immediately arose in my head. For example, I never got past some of the console exclusives (Persona 5, Ratchet and Clank, Bloodborne), which now cost less than two thousand even on discs.

In addition, over the years I have accumulated a good library of games. After buying a PS4, you can, for example, return to Red Dead Redemption 2, finally finish Days Gone, or try to get platinum in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Even this backlog will easily last a year, and if you do not forget about Series X, then you can stretch it out even longer.

After weighing all the pros and cons, and also resigned to the fact that I was not destined to see the advantages of “nextgen” in some games, I began to think about where to find the console. But then another question arose – which version of PS4 to choose.

Since I have a 4K TV, I chose the PlayStation 4 Pro. Its hardware is not so radically different from Slim and “fatty”, but still I wanted to play it safe and take the console with an eye on UltraHD. Well, Boost Mode, which improves performance in some games, and faster downloads seemed like a nice addition.

How to buy

The most well-known chains (M.Video, Eldorado) have not been supplied with firmware for a long time, and at less popular retailers they cost at least 80 thousand. Therefore, I had to turn to the secondary market at Avito: the prices there are no longer the same as they were a couple of years ago, but still quite adequate, given the ongoing events.

So, in my region, the Slim version costs 25-27 thousand, the fat version costs from 21 to 25, and the Pro costs about 35. Almost always, sellers give consoles with a second gamepad, several games on disks or an account. Sometimes all at once. More than once I caught myself thinking that those who did not have a PS4 before could now buy a console with many exclusives for a relatively modest amount.

I followed the ads for the PS4 Pro for a couple of days and eventually wrote to the seller who gave the console away for 36 thousand. The kit included a second blue gamepad and an Assassin’s Creed Black Flag disc.

I did not need these “accessories”, and the seller agreed to sell the PS4 Pro without them, reducing the price to 32,500 thousand. Given that the console was in good condition and with a box, the price seemed quite good to me.

I note that the Pro-versions are best sold exactly within 35 thousand: consoles that cost more are not taken so willingly. For example, a Death Stranding-style PS4 Pro with lots of accessories costs 45,000, but the buyer has not yet been found, although the announcement was published in early April.

Was it worth it

In short, yes, but there are nuances. I first downloaded God of War to test the console a bit. The PS4 Pro was quiet in the menus, so I was unpleasantly surprised when it began to noticeably make noise after starting the game. Of course, it cannot be compared with the noise from a washing machine or a vacuum cleaner, but it was still unusual.

I thought maybe the console still had some problem, but in weaker games (like Batman: The Telltale Series) it worked almost silently. Yes, and the previous owner changed the thermal paste shortly before the sale.

After a short search, we found out that many Pro owners complain about the noise – especially those who bought the console of the first revision. The fact is that they have a Delta cooler installed, which is quite noisy. Sony fixed the problem in revisions of the CUH-7100 and CUH-7200, but the first buyers had to put up with a flaw or change the cooler to a quieter one (for example, from Nidec).

To be honest, I wasn’t interested in this sort of thing before I bought the PS4 Pro, and it let me down. Yes, the revision of my console turned out to be CUH-7008B, so the reason for the noise became clear.

In discussions, besides replacing the cooler, players are advised to install another pressure plate to make the device quieter. But I’m not sure that I will decide on this: I’m afraid to break something inside the console, and I still need to find a reliable service center.

After testing the PS4 Pro for a few days, I’ve come to terms with the noise level. The difference with the absolutely quiet Xbox Series X is, of course, noticeable, but so far nothing has happened to my firmware. An overclocked cooler is even useful: in the heaviest games, the console does not heat up much.

As for games, I immediately bought Horizon Forbidden West. As it turned out, the game looks great and works stably even on the previous generation console. Sure, graphics and performance are better on PS5, but I don’t feel left out playing on PS4 Pro.

Noticeable, perhaps, long loading: the Horizon sequel runs for about a minute, and after death, checkpoints are loaded for 20-30 seconds. Again, this is not a bad result for a previous generation console, but after a year and a half of using the Series X, such an expectation seems unusual.

After Forbidden West, I’ll probably take care of the missed exclusives. There are no games that interest me yet, so it’s time to clear the backlog. If the release of God of War: Ragnarok takes place this fall, then the console will not be idle until the end of the year – I think this is a good alignment.

As a result, I can say that buying a PS4 in 2022 turned out to be a good compromise when it was impossible to get a PlayStation 5. It is still an excellent console with a huge library of games, and Sony is still releasing some of its new products on it.

In addition, in June, the publisher will upgrade its PS Plus subscription and give you access to hundreds of PS4 games for one small fee. Unless, of course, we wait for the launch of a new “plus” in Russia.

Yes, after the Xbox Series X it took me a few days to get used to the noise of the cooler and long downloads, but in general I do not regret spending 32 thousand. If you have a 4K TV and the right amount, then buy the “firmware”. The Slim version is suitable for those who are not interested in UltraHD resolution.

But do not repeat my mistake and pay attention to the revision: perhaps this will save you a few nerve cells.

    You have one account to which you can link up to five profiles – for yourself, the second half, children. Each will have its own browsing history, recommendations and favorites. To create a child profile, simply enter your child’s age and they will see what suits them. Any profile can be protected with a PIN code.

    Please note: one account allows you to use the online cinema only on two devices at the same time. Even from different profiles. That is, if you turned on the movie on your smartphone and laptop, you won’t be able to start watching on the TV either.

  • Why do I need to use a pin code to access 18+ content

    To access adult content (marking 18+), you must use a pin code. The PIN code will be requested each time you open the site and view adult content (18+).

    In accordance with part 4 of article 14. The Federal Law “On the Protection of Children from Information Harmful to Their Health and Development” requires us to ensure that minors’ access to works prohibited for children is restricted.

    If children do not use your account, then you can refuse to use a pin code in the service settings. Disabling the pin code will result in minors being able to see content that is not intended for viewing by minors.

    Money will be debited 1 day before the end of the subscription.

    4 renewal options are available: for 1, 3, 6 and 12 months – the longer the term, the more profitable. The subscription is automatically renewed for the selected period. The date until which the current subscription is valid, see the profile in the “My subscriptions” section.

    Canceling auto-renewal will not cancel the current subscription.

  • How to connect PREMIER on a TV or set-top box

  • Video uploads slowly or in poor quality

    Video download speed directly depends on internet speed. If the video is often interrupted, then the Internet speed is not enough. Close any third-party applications that may be using the internet and stop downloads if any.

    To watch the video in minimum quality, you need internet with a speed of at least 2 Mbps. If your Internet speed is 2 Mbps, you need to consider that other applications on the device also use the Internet, and this reduces the speed.

    To watch videos in good quality, we recommend a stable Internet connection with a speed of at least 15 Mbps.

    To check the internet speed on your Smart TV, go to your profile → Settings → Feedback → click the “Speed ​​test” button in the lower right corner.

  • App or in-app video won’t launch on iOS
    1. Log in again, re-enter your phone number and password.
  • On Android, the application or video in the application does not start

    Try clearing your cache:

    1. Open Settings (you’ll find the settings menu on your home screen or app drawer).
    2. Scroll down and tap Apps (this will open a list of all installed apps).
    3. Press “PREMIER” (application information will be displayed).
    4. Click “Storage” (it’s the first menu option).
    5. Click “Clear Cache” (the PREMIER application cache will be cleared, application settings will be reset).

    Try reinstalling the app:

    1. Delete the app and download it again from Google Play, HUAWEI AppGallery and ruStore.
    2. Log in again, re-enter your phone number and password. Remember that simply restarting the application will not help.
