In 2016, Apple was one of the first tech companies that dived headfirst into the USB-C world.

Even though their phones still have a proprietary lightning port, they’ve only shipped their MacBooks with USB-C ports. As a result, owners have had to use dongles to connect the peripherals they use.

That said, the new MacBook Pro changed everything. But does the MacBook Pro have HDMI ports? Read on as we answer that question.

Does the MacBook Pro Have HDMI Ports?

Depends on which MacBook you’re talking about.

Between 2005 and 2015, Apple fans could buy a MacBook with all the ports they could ask for. Meaning, every laptop had these ports:

Thunderbolt DisplayPort
HDMI Port
SD card slot
Standard USB ports

But come 2016, Apple got the idea that it wanted to make its laptops thinner. In a pursuit to make their laptops more aesthetically pleasing, all Apple laptops that came out after 2016 did not have the HDMI port.

However, with the 2021 variant of the MacBook Pro, Apple has reintroduced the ports. The latest MacBook Pro has:

USB-C ports that support Thunderbolt 4
MagSafe 3 port for charging
HDMI 2.0 port
SD card reader

For MacBook users, the return of these ports is a relief.

The SD card and the HDMI port can be found on the right edge of the laptop. The HDMI port lets users connect a second screen to their MacBook without using an adapter. However, if you want to connect one more display, you’ll have to use a Thunderbolt port.

That said, the single HDMI port that Apple has included on their latest MacBook Pro isn’t necessarily state-of-the-art.

Since it is only HDMI 2.0, it can support 4K resolution at a 60 Hz refresh rate. This means if you have a TV with 4K resolution at a 120 Hz refresh rate or a TV with 8K, this HDMI port is practically useless.

However, there aren’t many monitors that can display 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. But, since some of them exist and are now becoming increasingly common, it’s safe to say that after a few years, 4K at 120 frames per second is going to be the standard.

If you’re using the latest MacBook, you’ll have to plug the HDMI cable into the port, and you’ll be all set. But for people using older versions of the MacBook, the solution is a bit more complex.

Apple recommends its customers to use third-party DisplayPort to HDMI adapters. By using these adapters, any Apple user can easily send video and audio signals to external devices. Be it a screen, a projector, or even a smartphone; you’re not going to see a drop in quality.

However, to do this, you’ll need to follow a certain process.

You’ll first have to know which version of the MacBook you’re using. To do this:

In the Apple menu, click on the “About this Mac” option
Double-click on “version.”
Now type in your laptop’s serial number. You can find this on the surface of your laptop. You can also view this by going to settings, then clicking on “general,” and then clicking on “About” to view the serial number

These devices and versions can send video and audio signals:

Since these models have a built-in HDMI port, you’re not going to need an additional adapter. However, if you don’t have a MacBook from the list we’ve mentioned above, you’re going to need an adapter.

Apple’s latest generation MacBook Pro is now official. The upgraded 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models feature the new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips inside. New MacBook Pro now official

The M2 Pro chip found in the new MacBook Pro features an up to 12-core CPU and up to 19-core GPU. You can also add up to 32GB of unified memory. The M2 Max can go even further, including an up to 38-core GPU, double the unified memory bandwidth, and up to 96GB of unified memory.

Storage configuration options on the new MacBook Pro models range from 512GB on the low end and up to 8TB on the high end. The machines are available in the same space gray and silver color options as the previous generation.

Notably, Apple also says that these new MacBook Pro updates offer the “longest battery life ever in a Mac,” with up to 22 hours of runtime:

Apple today announced the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max, Apple’s next-generation pro silicon that brings even more power-efficient performance and battery life to pro users. With M2 Pro and M2 Max — the world’s most powerful and efficient chip for a pro laptop — MacBook Pro tackles demanding tasks, like effects rendering, which is up to 6x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro, and color grading, which is up to 2x faster.

Building on the unprecedented power efficiency of Apple silicon, battery life on MacBook Pro is now up to 22 hours — the longest battery life ever in a Mac.

The HDMI port has been updated to the HDMI 2.1 standard, which brings support for 8K displays up to 60Hz and 4K displays up to 240Hz. For the first time, the MacBook Pro also now offers Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, which Apple says offers speeds that are “up to twice as fast” as before.

M2 Pro and M2 Max performance

These machines offer our first look at the new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, which previously were not available in any machine. Here are some stats on the M2 Pro performance, according to Apple:

30 percent more graphics performance
Neural Engine is 40 percent faster, speeding up machine learning tasks like video analysis and image processing
Rendering titles and animations in Motion is up to 80 percent faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro and up to 20 percent faster than the previous generation.
Compiling in Xcode is up to 2.5x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro and nearly 25 percent faster than the previous generation.
Image processing in Adobe Photoshop is up to 80 percent faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro and up to 40 percent faster than the previous generation.

And M2 Max performance is as follows:

12-core CPU with up to eight high-performance and four high-efficiency cores that delivers up to 20 percent greater performance over M1 Max
Effects rendering in Cinema 4D is up to 6x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro and up to 30 percent faster than the previous generation.
Color grading in DaVinci Resolve is up to 2x faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro and up to 30 percent faster than the previous generation.

Apple’s full press release is on its website. The new machines are available to order today, January 17, with availability beginning on January 24.

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at $1,999, or $1,849 for education. The 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at $2,499, or $2,299 for education.

Apple laptops have at least six types of video-related ports: micro DVI port, Mini DisplayPort port, Thunderbolt 2 port, Thunderbolt 3 port, HDMI port, and USB port.

Some laptops have at least two of these built in (usually a USB port combined with a micro DVI, Mini DisplayPort, or Thunderbolt port).

For example, the 2017 version of the MacBook has only one port (although you can use special adapters to implement other types of video connectors). Older models tend to have more built-in ports, which may include VGA and HDMI ports.

The HDMI port is the most common type of port on electronic devices.

These ports have been around since early 2000 due to their ability to transfer large amounts of data (allowing higher resolution video).

DisplayPort is the successor to the HDM port.

It is fairly common in laptops and PCs, but much less common in TVs than its predecessor.

DVI ports are common in electronic devices manufactured from the late 90s to early 2000s.

They are seen as a rectangular shape which has the same rectangular holes in it and is usually white in color.

VGA ports are common in devices manufactured between the late 80s and late 90s. However, these ancient ports are still in use.

They are easily identified by their elongated shape and round holes in them. They usually come in blue, black, or pink.

Older Apple devices (for example, manufactured around 2000) usually have DVI ports. If your model has one DVI and you want to connect it to a TV with an HDMI port, you will need a DVI to HDMI adapter to connect your laptop to your TV.

Connect one end of the DVI to HDMI adapter to your notebook’s DVI port.

Most owners of Mac devices and modern TV models combine them together. But not everyone knows how to do it. Consider how to properly and, most importantly, why make this connection.

First of all, let’s analyze for what purposes it is necessary to connect a MacBook to a TV:

First, you will be able to use the TV model as the main monitor, carry out your work through the large screen. In this way, your TV acts as a computer screen, although you still perform all functions directly through the MacBook display.
Secondly, with the help of the connection, you can perform several tasks at the same time. For example, watch a movie on a TV screen, and perform work functions or play a game on a laptop display. In this case, the TV becomes an additional screen and increases user comfort.
Thirdly, on the TV screen, you can view photos or videos in higher resolution. However, please note that your computer must have the appropriate functionality for this.

Thus, the decision to connect a Mac device to a TV will be of great benefit, the main thing is to make the connection correctly.

HDMI . You can connect a Mac laptop with a standard HDMI cable. After connecting your Macbook to a TV, audio will not play through the TV screen, it will play through the Mac speakers. To optimize your TV for video playback, do the following:

In the application menu, select “Settings” – AirPlay and make sure that the function is turned on.
Next, you need to set up your Macbook. Open the Apple menu, select “System Preferences” and go to the “Monitors” section.
From the AirPlay Monitor menu, select Apple TV. Then click on the replay icon.

The AirPlay connection may be protected by a password that appears on the TV screen. This password will need to be entered on the MacBook.

You may also need to set up audio output, which is the same as when connecting a Mac device to a TV via an HDMI port. But instead of “HDMI” on the “Output” tab, select the “Apple TV” option.

It’s not uncommon to encounter a variety of problems when connecting your MacBook to your TV. You need to familiarize yourself with them in advance, as well as analyze how to correctly eliminate them. Let’s look at a few possible difficulties in connecting a MacBook to a TV.
