Warner Bros. Discovery to release Harry Potter series in 2025 or 2026 Discovery has begun work on a series based on the Harry Potter books. Potter fans greeted the news ambiguously: the plot of the upcoming project and the participation of JK Rowling, the author of the original source [1], raises the most questions. When will the series based on “Harry Potter”

Deadline suggests that the release of the Harry Potter series is expected in 2025 or 2026 [2].

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), which is producing the project, has begun upgrading its streaming service HBO Max: they have already changed their name to simply Max. It is likely that the WBD leadership will want the Potter series to appear on the platform as soon as possible in order to attract new viewers and subscribers.

What the Harry Potter series will be about

The series will be based on the seven Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The story begins with 11-year-old orphan Harry Potter learning that he is a wizard. The boy goes to study at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he has to find out the secret of the death of his parents and confront the dark wizard Voldemort.

Potteriana was published from 1997 to 2007 and brought Rowling worldwide fame and status as a cult author: each Harry Potter novel takes a place in the twenty best-selling books of all time [3].

Eight Harry Potter films were released between 2002 and 2011 (the last book was divided into two parts). The main roles were played by young Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) and famous actors Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall), Alan Rickman (Severus Snape), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) and others.

Each season of the new series, like the films, will be based on a book from the cycle. HBO & Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys said the company will give viewers the opportunity to experience Hogwarts in a whole new way: “The new Max Original series will take a deep dive into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy all these years.” .

Bloys also said that the project would last ten years. It’s unclear exactly how the seven seasons will air within that time frame. WBD management has stressed that Fantastic Beasts (a spin-off of the Potter films) will not be part of the new series.

On April 12, 2023, HBO Max (since May – Max) published the first teaser for the upcoming project with the caption that the series will be a faithful adaptation of cult books.

The relaunch of a well-known and beloved story caused a mixed reaction. The decision to film the Potter again was called risky and thoughtless. Movieweb even wrote that the Harry Potter reboot is a big mistake [4]. Instead of a remake of films, many would like to see an expansion of the wizarding world, such as a series about the Marauders and the youth of Harry Potter’s father, the rise of Lord Voldemort, or the founders of Hogwarts.

The first rumors that HBO Max is discussing the possibility of creating a series based on the Harry Potter universe appeared in January 2021. April 12, 2023 Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that HBO Max and Discovery+ are merging into Max and that the same platform will produce the Potter series.

The series is executive produced by Neil Blair (Fantastic Beasts), Ruth Kenley-Letts (We’ll Take Manhattan) and JK Rowling herself. The writer said that she is looking forward to being part of a new adaptation that will allow for such depth and detail that only a full-length television series can achieve [5].

Rowling’s participation caused a new wave of negativity towards the writer and a call to boycott the project. Previously, Harry Potter’s “mother” was criticized for speaking out against trans people. In response to calls to boycott the new series about the wizard, Rowling wrote on her Twitter page (blocked in Russia):

“Terrible news that I feel it my duty to share. Activists are trying to organize another boycott of my work, this time the Harry Potter series. Since forewarned is forearmed, I stocked up on plenty of champagne.”

Neither the writers nor the directors of the Harry Potter series are currently known. However, the company’s management teased fans with claims that it would be a House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones-scale project, which was also produced by HBO. HBO & Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys stated, “I imagine there will be this scale or higher. The short answer is: there will be everything you need to create a quality show” [2].

Harry Potter cast: who can play

For the series about young wizards, new actors will be selected for the main roles. This is to be expected, as Harry Potter is 11 at the beginning of the story, and the actor who played him in the films, Daniel Radcliffe, will turn 34 in 2023.

Fans have hope that their favorite actors from the Potter films will appear as adult characters. For example, Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, could play the role of Draco’s father Lucius Malfoy in the series [6].

It’s also almost certain that the series will feature characters from the books that weren’t in the movies. Rowling posted on social media that she agreed to produce the show for Peeves. The poltergeist repeatedly appeared in the Potterian, but there was no place for him in the film adaptation.

Interesting facts about the Harry Potter universe

The first part of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, came out at 1997 in the London edition of Bloomsbury. In the United States, the book was called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
In 2023, JK Rowling revealed that her ex-husband Jorge Arantes hid the manuscript of the first Harry Potter book from her. The writer was afraid that he would burn the pages, so every day she took the manuscript to work and made copies.
Many Harry Potter character names reveal the role or character of the hero. For example, by name, you can guess that Remus Lupine is a werewolf. Remus is similar to the names Romulus and Remus (according to legend, the founders of Rome, who were raised by a she-wolf), lupin in Latin means “wolf” [7].
Russian translators tried to “play” with names and adapt them for readers. So, in the translation of Rosman, one of the founders of Hogwarts Rowena Ravenclaw turned into Candida Ravenclaw, her colleague Helga Hufflepuff became Penelope Hufflepuff. The translator Maria Spivak in the books of the Makhaon publishing house even appeared such characters as Zloteus Zlei, Madame Moonshine, Neville Longpop and Psychic Lovegood [8].
Even those who have not read or watched Harry Potter know that the main character fought the dark wizard Voldemort. However, the king of horror Stephen King called another character the greatest fictional villain since Hannibal Lecter – Assistant Minister for Magic Dolores Umbridge [9].
To avoid leakage, during the proofreading of the seventh book of The Deathly Hallows, printouts were referred to as distracting titles, such as “Edinburgh Potmakers”. The name would hardly have held an erudite fan: Rowling wrote the first book in Edinburgh, and in the word potmakers pot – the first syllable of the surname of the main character Potter, makers – “creators”.
The most expensive clothes in the Potter films are the uniforms of Hogwarts students. Ties were made from natural silk, and waistcoats were made from wool. This decision was made by the costume designers to make the costumes look better on screen and last longer.
In the USA in the city of Orlando there is an amusement park “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” [10]. In it you can walk along Diagon Alley, the village of Hogsmeade, visit platform 9 ¾, drink butter beer and buy a magic wand.
On the official website of Harry Potter Wizardingworld you can find out your house at Hogwarts, Patronus and wand. In 2022, for beginning Potter fans, the Startingharrypotter website appeared with quizzes about the main characters and descriptions of the locations of the world.
