New Year’s movies: 57 best

“In the place of the princess” and “In the place of the princess: a new life”

Do not self-medicate! In our articles, we collect the latest scientific data and the opinions of authoritative health experts. But remember: only a doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment.

In 2018, Vanessa Hudgens starred in her debut Christmas film from Netflix, In the Place of the Princess. This is the first foray into the territory of the Hallmark company, the former holiday movie monopoly, by the giant streaming platform. And it marked the dawn of a new era for both the actress and the genre as a whole. In a nutshell, Hudgens plays two roles here at once: a princess and an ordinary pastry chef from Chicago who does not believe in love. The film was a hit and launched a whole Netflix Christmas movie universe, in which Hudgens, among other things, met a Christmas knight and returned in the sequel In the Place of the Princess.

The Snowman

The Snowman, a charming short cartoon about the brief adventures of a boy and his snowman, lasts just long enough to quickly watch before bed. Although the film is based on the children’s book of the same name by Raymond Briggs, when it touches on the themes of the transience of life and innocence, even adults are in tears.

“Santa Claus has arrived in town!”

Another animated classic from Rankin-Bass, Santa Claus is in Town! is an original story from Chris Kringle’s childhood. Chris was voiced by Mickey Rooney, and the postman-narrator was none other than Fred Astaire himself.

A Prince for Christmas

A Prince for Christmas was one of Netflix’s first forays into the Christmas genre, and at first glance, it’s typical Christmas nonsense. But, if you can relax and give up on the fact that you can predict literally every plot twist, you will realize that in fact, “The Prince for Christmas” is the perfect Christmas movie. You don’t even have to follow the plot: the main thing is that this story about a journalist and a willful prince from a fictional country is thoroughly imbued with the Christmas spirit.

A Magical Christmas

Back in 1985, Disney released this forgotten, box-office failure, starring the legendary Harry Dean Stanton as an angel looking after a struggling working-class family. The mother of the family (Mary Steenbergen) goes through many dangerous trials before learning the true meaning of Christmas. The Magical Christmas is a rare cocktail of truth of life and sentimentalism that has a lot in common with It’s a Wonderful Life, and you can call us crazy, but you can hear the intonations of Groundhog Day, which came out eight years later.

“Last Vacation”

Pardon the pun, but Queen Latifah is deadly as a dying patient misdiagnosed by a broken CT scanner. Abandoning her eternal discretion, the woman takes all her savings and goes on vacation to Europe to meet her culinary idol. But here’s the catch: what to do if you’ve already spent all the money, and suddenly it turns out that you’re not sick at all? Be sure to watch!

“White Hart”

Just before Christmas, Suzanne’s husband Jeff suddenly dies and her world is turned upside down. But soon an even greater shock awaits her: she learns that her husband cheated on her with a stripper, who, unexpectedly for Susanna, becomes her friend (albeit a rather bad influence on her). From that moment on, indie cinema turns into a sweet, sad and spicy sex comedy.

New Year’s Eve Party

T.J. Miller and Jennifer Aniston play rival brother and sister with different views on how to run the company they inherited. When Miller’s hero Clay is faced with the task of attracting an important client, he decides to throw a New Year’s corporate party of the century, which ends in a brawl that can put an end to the company itself.

“Christmas”

The narco-comedy “Christmas” is a craft, albeit a crude one (what else can you expect from films with Seth Rogen?), but it is quite worthy to be on your list. And it’s also a great story for the guys we all know who flatly refuse to grow up until time itself bites them in the ass, reminding them that they are no longer children. And even if they were children, Santa certainly would not have come to visit them.

Jack Frost

Yes, Michael Keaton also has a Christmas movie. He plays the namesake of Jack Frost, a caustic aging rocker who tragically died in a car accident over Christmas. A year later, the son revives Jack by playing a song on the harmonica, but the snowman becomes the reincarnation of the man. Although this touching Christmas movie is more like a horror movie due to poor special effects, there is still something in it.

Four Christmases

Why wouldn’t Reese Witherspoon be in a Christmas movie? In this 2008 film, he and Vince Vaughn play a couple who are forced to undertake an entire Grand Tour to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Eve. Have you ever wanted to subject your childhood to a thorough analysis?

“Batman Returns”

Let’s face it, although this action movie takes place during the Christmas holidays, it’s not really about Christmas. Tim Burton’s second Batman movie has all the trappings of his equally gothic Christmas tale The Nightmare Before Christmas, only this one is full of violence, danger and sex (try to think of the movie with the more memorable scene under the mistletoe branch).

“Just Friends”

We all know stories like this: Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart play old school friends Jamie and Chris – Chris is in love with Jamie, but she wants to remain friends. Ten years later, Chris returns to his hometown for the holidays and tries to win her heart.

“Merry Christmas”

In his indie film, Joe Swanberg gives us Mumblecore Christmas (a sub-genre of independent cinema with low budgets, amateur actors and natural acting. – Rules of Life): flighty young Jenny ( Anna Kendrick) comes down on her happily married brother like snow on his head, causing his marriage to crack.

Exchange Vacation

Nancy Meyers is the queen of hygge, and this Christmas rom-com is perhaps her warmest and most cozy film. Two women, one from London (Kate Winslet) and the other from Los Angeles (Cameron Diaz), experience love disappointments at the same time. Deciding to switch houses for the Christmas holidays and get away from their problems, both soon meet a new love.

Love Actually

This star-studded ensemble cast romantic comedy by Richard Curtis is loved by some and hated by others. Even if you can’t stand it, it’s undeniable that this movie, with multiple parallel storylines, has had a big impact on the holiday comedy genre over the past ten years – and it’s the most poppy Christmas movie you’ll ever see on the big screen.

“A Present for Christmas”

Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a busy clerk who has been neglecting his little son for a long time. However, this Christmas, the man promises that he will buy him Turbo Man, the most fashionable and desirable toy of the year. Except he’s not the only dad to make such a promise, which leads to a serious confrontation with another dad (played by the hilarious Sinbad).

Steed

Jessica Riggs finds a wounded deer in the woods, and it soon turns out that the deer may be magical. It might sound terribly sugary, but the film also touches on the themes of class inequality and grief in the family.

Totally Nutty

This Steve Martin Christmas movie was clearly not appreciated at the time. The film, co-written by Nora Ephron just a year after Sleepless in Seattle, has all the virtues of her creations: it is a lively comedy with witty lines and a famous actor in the title role. At the time of release, this movie about a man who runs a suicide prevention hotline may have turned out to be a bit gloomy for viewers dressed in Santa’s reindeer sweaters, but it’s certainly a fresh take on the holiday genre.

The Happiest Season

Clea Duvall’s The Happiest Season is a new kind of Christmas movie that bridges two complex worlds: the one where people decide to come out and the one where they… well, you know prefer to quietly endure the holidays spent with the family, keeping their mouths shut. This is a film with Kristen Stewart, Dan Levy, Aubrey Plaza and other movie stars, and the world drawn in it seems painfully familiar and at the same time life-affirming.

“Welcome or No Neighbors Allowed”

Matthew Broderick plays the father of a family whose orderly world is turned upside down with the arrival of a quirky new neighbor (Danny DeVito). Soon the neighbors are competing to see whose intricate Christmas lights are the coolest, and their rivalry is predictably out of control.

Hello family!

All the stars of the first magnitude gathered here: Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Luke Wilson and Diane Keaton – and this is not yet an exhaustive list! If you have ever been a member of a family hostile to strangers (or were familiar with one), the plot “Hello family!” will resonate in your heart. But the film, which begins as a tense family comedy about getting Sarah Jessica Parker out of the family, takes a serious turn and surprises with a touching ending.

“Golden Youth”

Whit Stillman’s debut movie characters, wealthy Upper East Side playboys, merrily fluttered around Manhattan in the 1980s, until a young man from the “wrong” side of Central Park wormed his way into the company .

Silent Night, Deadly Night

This iconic slasher will go out of its way to spoil your Christmas spirit. The plot of the film is so scandalous that it was withdrawn from wide release: a psychopathic killer with an ax and dressed as Santa crumbles victims into pieces.

“It Happened on Fifth Avenue”

The heroes of this post-war movie – World War II veterans in need of a roof over their heads – find shelter in a wonderful Manhattan mansion while its owner winters in the South. The film, which touched on the sore problem of a large number of homeless among veterans, was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay.

“Edward Scissorhands”

Johnny Depp’s pale, leather-clad Edward with scissors for hands stands out against the colorful backdrop of Tim Burton’s fantasy-art provincial town decorated for Christmas 1990, but in the end, his story turns out to be completely in tune with the festive spirit of tolerance and acceptance.

“Santa Claus”

In 1994, many children developed a very peculiar fear: they began to fear that Santa would fall off their roof and die. Thanks to the filmmakers for turning a cute holiday into a complete nightmare! Tim Allen accidentally scared Santa into a heart attack and is now forced to take over his duties. The amount of body shaming in the film is off the scale (in 2020, this definitely wouldn’t work!), but Santa Claus has been on the lists of the best Christmas films so often that we can’t help but mention it.

Carol

Yes, this tape never claimed to be a Christmas movie. And yet, when you watch how Rooney Mara, playing a saleswoman in a Santa hat, falls in love with fur-wrapped Cate Blanchett, your heart becomes as warm as when Keira Knightley opens the door in Love Actually and sees a poster with the inscription: “Tell them they’re mummers.”

The Polar Express

If you’ve seen the making of this motion-captured cartoon, you’re probably dreaming of erasing the image of Tom Hanks in a skin-tight suit dotted with tiny sensors. If you haven’t seen it, don’t spoil your magic. The animation of the classic fairy tale about the Christmas trip to the North Pole is so hyper-realistic that you might feel as if you yourself got into this magical train.

The Grinch Stole Christmas

In 2000, Jim Carrey slipped into a hefty green Grinch suit to turn the famous cartoon into a live-action movie. And where Jim Carrey is, there are impromptu jokes. And then there’s a rather nauseating cheese-eating scene, simply because Jim Carrey can do that.

“Harold and Kumar’s Killer Christmas”

John Cho and Kal Penn’s friendship between two stoners is clouded over after the latter destroys their Christmas tree. With this, in the best of films about the goofy duo, a nightly adventure in the atmosphere of holiday madness begins.

Die Hard

Ho-ho-ho, he has a machine gun! we’re talking about Bruce Willis’ John McClain as he single-handedly fights terrorists in John McTiernan’s peerless action classic.

“While You Were Sleeping”

If “Die Hard” made it onto the list of Christmas pictures, why not include “While You Were Sleeping”? Saving the life of a stranger who fell under a train on Christmas Day, Sandra Bullock gets into a fair amount of trouble. She mutters, “I was going to marry him,” and the nurse immediately takes her for his bride. Soon our heroine is already becoming the favorite of his family, who welcomes her with open arms. The only problem is that she managed to fall in love with the brother of her recent lover.

Kiss Bang Bang

Nearly every film directed and written by Shane Black is set on Christmas Day (think Lethal Weapon and Iron Man 3), but none of them contribute to festive mood is better than this neo-noir comedy. Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer play, respectively, an actor-turned thief and a private investigator who team up to work together on an investigation.

Gremlins

Directed by Joe Dante, this mind-bending horror comedy from 1984 is more of a crazy horror story than a sweet fairy tale: a mystical Chinese creature (the so-called “mogwai”) named Gizmo has the appearance of an adorable furry, but it is worth feeding him after midnight or wet, as he spawns mischievous little monsters.

The Corner Shop

In this unforgettable romantic comedy set over the Christmas holidays, Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan work in a gift shop and can’t stand each other – despite the fact that they unwittingly spin love by anonymous correspondence.

A Christmas Tale

In this 2008 drama, French director Arnaud Desplechin paints a gripping, sweeping portrait of a dysfunctional family whose members eventually struggle to reconcile with each other while celebrating Christmas together, only to discover that the mother of the family (Catherine Deneuve) is dying of leukemia.

“Black Christmas”

This 1974 Bob Clark masterpiece featuring Olivia Hussey, John Saxon, Margot Kidder and Keir Dulli is the progenitor of modern slasher films and tells the story of a group of female students who are hunted by a mysterious maniac-killer .

Eyes Wide Shut

Stanley Kubrick’s latest film may be better known for other features (say, that unforgettable masked orgy), but at its core, this film is nothing more than an exploration of personal drives and strained marital relationships enclosed in a velvet case of a Christmas atmosphere.

Little Women

Louisa May Alcott’s 1994 and 2019 adaptations of the novel were born from the same source and developed into very different interpretations – just like sisters. And just like every devoted reader of Little Women has a favorite sister, March, he decided on his favorite film adaptation. However, both films share a stellar cast and a touching story about what it’s like to be sisters. And, since our topic today is Christmas ribbons, both adaptations feature picturesque vignettes of snowy Christmas holidays with feasts, cozy flames in the fireplace, pranks and family joys.

The Best Man 2

Director Malcolm D. Lee brings the cast from the 1999 film back together. In the sequel to The Best Man, old friends gather for the first time in fifteen years as a group to celebrate Christmas – in this festive scenery, they have to solve a variety of problems in their relationship.

Meet Me in St. Louis

Filmed in 1944, Vincent Minnelli’s musical consists of several vignettes set in different seasons, but the most famous is the one in which the movie star (and Minnelli’s future wife) Judy Garland sings Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

“Rudolph the Deer”

Adults have a hard time in our difficult times, and it seems that this legendary cartoon is the very story that we all miss. Undoubtedly, the theme of social justice is also raised in the cartoon, but at the heart of the story of Rudolph and his dental-savvy friends lies time-tested wisdom: if you are not like everyone else, you have nothing to be ashamed of. Love yourself the way you are.

Charlie Brown Christmas

We hope you won’t argue that Charlie Brown has long been a household name. The Christmas holidays don’t really come until the next Starbucks starts spinning the theme from Little Potbellied. Seasonally depressed (and easy to understand), Charlie Brown tries to put on a Christmas play until Linus reminds him what the true meaning of Christmas is.

“The Elf”

In this absurd (and surprisingly sweet) fish-out-of-water fantasy, Will Ferrell plays an orphan fool raised by Santa and his elves at the North Pole, who travels to New York to find his biological father – a cynical book publisher played by James Caan.

“Apartment”

A single man (Jack Lemmon) lets married co-workers use his apartment for side flings until he falls in love with the boss’s mistress (Shirley MacLaine). Billy Wilder’s 1960 comedy won the Best Picture Oscar for good reason – it’s one of the best American films of all time. Considering that its plot of loneliness and love takes place around December 25th, this in turn makes it one of the greatest Christmas movies as well.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

The eternal question: should The Nightmare Before Christmas be considered a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? Considering our mission today, we prefer to answer: “For Christmas.” Tim Burton’s forte is a skillful work on all sorts of creepy visual gadgets in one of his usual manner. We don’t mind having a skeletal Santa for Christmas if he’s as cute as he was in Nightmare.

Scrooge

This magnificent 1951 film, still the best adaptation of the legendary Dickens novel, tells the well-known story of the ordeals of the evil miser Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim), who is represented by three Christmas spirits – past years, as well as present and future Christmas time.

The Muppets Christmas Carol

Jim Henson died when The Muppets Christmas Carol came out in 1992, was in pre-production, but its spirit lives on in this musical adaptation of Dickens, which, thanks to its flawless blend of buffoonery and heartiness, is certainly an underrated triumph.

“Bad Santa”

In this terribly funny black comedy from director Terry Zwigoff, Billy Bob Thornton, who portrays a mall robber who takes a job as Santa, paints the Christmas holidays in deviant colors.

Miracle on 34th Street

You can’t go wrong with this timeless Christmas movie about a man claiming to be the real Santa Claus (the original is excellent, of course, but the 1994 remake with Richard Attenborough and Maroy Wilson is also quite good).

A New Christmas Tale

Satirically playing Dickens in Richard Donner’s amusing modern adaptation, Bill Murray plays the role of an arrogant and selfish telecom mogul planning to stage a play based on A Christmas Carol in prose, who unexpectedly becomes the hero crazy version of this the story itself.

Home Alone

In this timeless children’s adventure comedy from director Chris Columbus and writer John Hughes, Macaulay Culkin, left at home by his family who flew away for the Christmas holidays, is forced to fight a pair of slow-witted robbers (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern).

“Happy Christmas”

This 1954 musical, featuring a new version of the song the movie takes its name from (and first performed by the famous Bing Crosby at the Holiday Inn), is about entertainers (Crosby and Danny Kay ), teaming up with artist sisters (Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen) to help their former commander keep the hotel he opened in Vermont.

A Christmas Carol

Nine years after Black Christmas, director Bob Clark has created yet another iconic Christmas film, albeit a very different one. This is a fan-favorite nostalgic saga about nine-year-old Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) who, more than anything, dreams of getting an air rifle for Christmas. If you have cable channels, you can watch this movie on December 25 when they will no doubt be playing A Christmas Carol non-stop.

Christmas Holidays

It’s rare that the third film in a series is as good as the previous two, but that’s the case with this triquel in which Clark (Chevy Chase), Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), Audrey (Juliet Lewis) and Rusty Griswold (Johnny Galecki), endure many small troubles, celebrate Christmas with their whole extended family.

It’s a Wonderful Life

Few films are more Christmas-inspired than this 1919 fantasy film by Frank Capra46 year. In the film, a suicidal George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) is approached by an angel who helps him see how important his life really is.

20 best Christmas movies that help you believe in miracles

Likbez

Movie

7 January

A magical evening with the family is guaranteed.

20. Miracle on 34th Street

Miracle on 34th Street

  • USA, 1994.
  • Fantasy.
  • Duration: 114 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6.5.

This movie is exactly what a Christmas movie should be: sweet, kind, a little naive and full of wonders. Now, perhaps, it will seem to someone tightened. And yet, “Miracle on 34th Street” is useful to watch when you no longer believe in either Santa Claus, or Santa, or fairy tales.

19. The Polar Express

The Polar Express

  • USA, 2004.
  • Fantasy, fairy tale, adventure.
  • Duration: 100 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6.6.

Usually on Christmas everyone sits at home and waits for a miracle, and Santa drives deer around the globe and distributes magic. The Polar Express, on the other hand, shows a little boy who himself went to meet Santa and miracles. A simple fairy tale with an understandable plot that will appeal to young children.

18. A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol

  • USA, 2009
  • Fantasy, drama.
  • Duration: 96 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6.8.

Still from the film A Christmas Carol

Screen version of the classic story by Charles Dickens. Although the cartoon has enough gloomy scenes (three ghosts communicate with the hero, not fairies and good wizards), it is very life-affirming. This is a timeless story about the importance of being kind.

17. Intuition

Serendipity

  • USA, Canada, 2001.
  • Melodrama, comedy.
  • Duration: 87 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6.9.

A light romantic comedy about how feelings overcome distance and circumstances, and about how real miracles happen when you don’t count on them. Of course, this happens before Christmas.

16. Christmas story

Joulutarina

  • Finland, 2007.
  • Drama, fantasy.
  • Duration: 83 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7.0.

The title is the same as another movie on the list, but the story is different. There is no holiday in spite of everything and unnecessary tinsel, but there is a poignant story about a man who gives people miracles. Try to look at Christmas from the point of view of Santa Claus, who was once an ordinary Finnish boy Nicholas.

15. Santa’s Secret Service

Arthur Christmas

  • UK, USA, 2011.
  • Adventure, comedy, fantasy.
  • Duration: 97 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7.1.

Still from the film “Santa Claus’s Secret Service”

A rare opportunity to get to know not only Santa Claus himself, but also his sons. The younger Arthur discovers that because of a mistake, the little girl Gwen will not receive a gift – and decides to personally correct the situation.

14. The Christmas Chronicles

The Christmas Chronicles

  • USA, 2018.
  • Fantasy, comedy, adventure.
  • Duration: 104 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7.1.

Classic good comedy for children, and even with Kurt Russell in a perfect way for him. Always quarreling brother and sister film Santa Claus, but accidentally break his sleigh. And now the heroes must help the wizard save the holiday and deliver gifts to everyone.

13. Lost Christmas

Lost Christmas

  • UK, 2011.
  • Drama.
  • Duration: 88 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7.1.

A sad tale about magic that we make ourselves. Each of our actions, like a spell, leads to trouble or joy. The question is what should we do.

Before Christmas and New Year it is customary to take stock and make plans. And this film will certainly help to correct the mistakes.

12. Guardians of the Dreams

Rise of the Guardians

  • USA, 2012. Phone:
  • Fantasy, adventure.
  • Duration: 97 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7.3.

A still from the movie “The Keepers of Dreams”

A cartoon that helps to broaden one’s horizons: the Easter Bunny, the Sandman and the Tooth Fairy are not the most popular characters in our country, but in this cartoon they are part of the main character’s team. A good reason to tell the child about different mythological creatures and think for a second why scary dreams are represented in the form of horses. However, the characters may be unfamiliar, but the film is still about the main thing: about friendship and faith in miracles.

A film from childhood that our parents didn’t like: the jokes in the film are mainly related to bullying of adults. There are practically no domestic films about Christmas, and not about the New Year. Still from the film “Merry Christmas”

A film in which Christmas is celebrated in the war. Not the most obvious choice of scenery for a holiday film, but the plot was invented by life itself: the film is based on real events that happened in 1914. Then the fighting on the Western Front unofficially stopped: the soldiers did not conduct military operations and even celebrated Christmas together. What is not a reason to believe in humanity again?
