Construction type
Refrigerators vary by type of construction :
- The side by side refrigerator is a plus size model where the freezer and refrigerator occupy almost the same volume. The most dimensional unit, which takes up quite a lot of space. Although the main feature of this form factor is not so much volume as equally convenient access to both the freezer and refrigerator compartments – you do not have to constantly bend over or stretch. The large volume of such a refrigerator, of course, has advantages: you can buy groceries on the weekend for a week and arrange them comfortably. When choosing such a model, attention should be paid to the location of the freezer, it can be on the left or right.
- The full-size refrigerator/freezer is the classic choice for most people. Combines two devices – a refrigerator and a freezer. The location of the freezer is both top and bottom. This does not affect the uniformity of food cooling, but it does affect the ease of use.
It is much more convenient to take in-demand products when they are stored flush with the body. This form factor has earned popularity due to its versatility, fairly compact size and variety – you can find both large models that compete with swing doors and small ones.
- Full-size refrigerator without freezer – the choice of people who do not need a freezer compartment. At first glance, such a model does not seem very practical, and basically it is preferred by those who have a freestanding freezer. But in the combination of two types of equipment there is a benefit: firstly, you do not need to spend a lot of space in the kitchen for a large device, expelling the freezer somewhere outside the kitchen space (to the balcony, to the corridor). Secondly, if suddenly one of the devices fails, the second one will be able to secure it without letting the products go to waste.
- The compact refrigerator is the smallest type of design that takes up the least amount of space.
Salvation for small or island kitchen layouts. Sometimes compact refrigerators are used as built-in under the countertop, installing them one by one or in pairs – this option is cheaper than using specialized models.
- Multi door models. The number of doors can be up to five pieces. The division into many compartments allows you to make the device more economical. Instead of one big door, you open a small one, ie. just the compartment you need. At this time, all other compartments remain closed, which means that the extra cold does not go away.
- The refrigerated display case is used in trade enterprises where there is a need to demonstrate the product to the buyer in its natural storage environment. They are desktop, floor and wall. The choice of a showcase, first of all, depends on the availability of free space in the room and the needs of the institution. In residential premises, this type of refrigeration equipment is used for decoration.
Defrost technology
The types of defrosting for the freezer and refrigerator of the same device can be different – to reduce the cost or reduce the volume of construction.
- Manual (freezer only) – the good old method where you have to do everything with your own hands. In such a refrigerator, an ice “coat” with a thickness of more than 5 mm will form over time. To eliminate it, you will need to disconnect the device from the network, pull out all the products, and remove everything that is frosted over – the process will not be quick. But the price of structures with such defrosting, as a rule, is the lowest. Modern refrigerators have good thermal insulation. The process of formation of a “fur coat” takes a long time and can reach a year. Taking into account the recommendations of manufacturers about the obligatory cleaning of the refrigerator once a year, manual defrosting does not often affect the comfort of using the refrigerator.
- Automatic or drip (only for refrigerator compartments) is a more advanced technology that can significantly save time on defrosting. A cooling element is installed in the refrigerator, which works cyclically: it turned on, it froze the required temperature – it turned off, the frost that had frozen on the walls melted and stacked into the evaporator compartment.
The advantages of this system can be safely called the low cost and the fact that the humidity regime in the refrigerator is normal – the products do not dry out and do not ventilate. The disadvantage of the design is that the condensate discharge channel sometimes becomes clogged, and you have to manually defrost the refrigerator, and then clean the channel.
- No Frost (used for freezing and refrigeration compartments) – the refrigerator is equipped with a special blowing system that prevents most of the condensate from accumulating on the walls. Residual condensate accumulates on the periodically heated evaporator, and from there flows into the evaporation compartment. Thanks to this system, you can forget about defrosting the refrigerator. But it also has drawbacks: due to the constant circulation of air flows, products without packaging quickly lose moisture, and the defrosting unit itself takes up a lot of the internal volume of the installation. Accordingly, the refrigerator is larger in size than its counterparts of the same volume, but without No Frost.
Compressor
As you know, the compressor is the heart of the refrigerator – the device that ensures the operation of the unit. The most common are linear and inverter compressors. It is the compressor that forces the refrigerant (freon gas is most often used) to move from one state of aggregation to another, thereby starting the process of cold formation in all refrigerator chambers. There are models with an inverter compressor control unit and without it. Non-inverter compressors are called conventional.
- Conventional compressors work according to the scheme: you set the temperature on the thermostat, and the refrigerator cools the interior to the desired value, then turns off. As soon as the temperature rises, the compressor turns on again – the cycles are constantly repeated. The compressor starting process is accompanied by vibrations and consumes a significant starting current.
- Inverter compressors work a little differently – when the required temperature is reached, the compressor reduces speed to a minimum and maintains the temperature.
This saves both electricity (maximum energy consumption occurs during the start-up period) and the compressor’s life (the most difficult mode for equipment is start-up). The manufacturer’s warranty for models with inverter compressors can be up to 10 years. Therefore, despite a slightly higher cost, inverter compressors end up being more economical. The reduced noise level is a nice bonus.
Some models are equipped with two compressors – this measure was also invented to save money. Indeed, in such installations compressors of lower power are used, and you can choose the operating mode from one compressor, partially using the volume of the refrigerator – a convenient feature if the filling of the chamber with products changes depending on the season. In case of failure of one of the compressors, the remaining second one will help to save the products.
The compressors themselves can be realized in different ways:
- Linear compressor – an electromagnetic coil in one plane controls the movement of the piston, which compresses the refrigerant.
The movements are linear, which reduces wear and tear on the device and further reduces power consumption.
- Rotary compressor – the operation is based on a connecting rod mechanism with circular movements.
Inverter linear compressor refrigerator ideal for a quiet, energy efficient kitchen with a long lifespan.
A refrigerator, as a constantly working technique, “eats” decently – from several tens to hundreds of kilowatts per year. When choosing a model, it is better to take this factor into account, and give preference to more energy-efficient devices with energy consumption classes from A + and higher. For refrigerators, the minimum A+ energy consumption limit coincides with the maximum A++, so you should also pay attention to consumption in Wh.
Additional functions
Freshness zone (zero zone) – will extend the freshness of your products, due to the optimal microclimate (optimal humidity and temperature close to zero)
Ice maker – helps you get the right amount of ice of the right size in a short time
External display – makes it easier to manage all the functions of the device, making it clear and intuitive forget to close the door, or the power supply will suddenly turn off
Child protection is a function implemented in different ways in different models, but in the end it works for one purpose – so that little pranksters do not make their own adjustments to the operation of the equipment. Usually performed in the form of blocking control buttons.
Antibacterial coatings and filters are the latest developments from manufacturers to maintain high quality products when stored in the refrigerator. In devices with these options, the level of development of adverse microorganisms is much less, which means that an unpleasant odor will not bother you. However, such models also need to be washed periodically, in accordance with the recommendations of the technical manual.
