I adore my pets. I share a home with two Labrador retrievers that shed like it’s their full-time job and two dust-making parrots (oh, and my husband). It means I’m vacuuming a lot. But even with a consistent cleaning schedule, I still find myself frequently sneezing and having asthma flare-ups. When I began testing the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool (HP 04) — a combination space heater and air purifier — for our guide to the best space heaters, I had never really thought about my in-home air quality. I assumed the air was sometimes filled with dust and pet hair particles, but that was the extent of it.

While we named the Dyson our best high-end space heater because of its superior heating capabilities, at about $600, the price tag is, frankly, a bit jaw-dropping. But fast forward several months and I’ve found that its air purification features more than justify the price for my family. I’m now an air-quality connoisseur; I regularly peek at the graphs in the Dyson app to see if I can better manage my indoor environment. When I spot the tell-tale green checkmark on the device’s screen, I feel a sense of accomplishment, knowing full well that my space is healthier and the air is less likely to aggravate my asthma.

Unlike most space heaters, the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool has a unique oblong design. The slim heater stands about 30 inches tall and its hollow ring disperses clean, purified hot (or cool) air. Out of the box, all you need to do is click the carbon and HEPA filters into place and cover them with the base piece; it took just a minute to get it up and running. While it can be turned on and off via a button on the unit, it also comes with a remote control, pairs with a smartphone app for iOS and Android, and works with Google Home or Amazon Alexa.

Air purification features

When I began testing, I thought air quality could either be good or bad. It turns out that it’s a bit more nuanced than that.

Different compounds and noxious substances hang in the air, including small particles and harmful odors that can enter your lungs and exacerbate allergies or breathing issues. The Dyson detects four main air pollutants: particulate matter (PM) 2.5, PM10, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and oxidizing gases. These four groups encompass most household irritants like pollen, smoke, burning candles, industrial pollutants, cooking odors, fragrances, cleaning products, and combustion from cars or gas-powered appliances. The Dyson works quickly to remove these substances from the air. You can see the action in real time from the unit’s built-in screen, but I prefer to use the app from my smartphone. It provides a bigger, more readable graph view of all the pollutants at once, and you can easily change the settings without even being in the same room.

The app dashboard provides you with an overview of your home’s air quality, temperature, and humidity levels. It also shows you info on outdoor air quality for your location.

According to Dyson, the purifier can provide up to 2,860 cubic square feet of coverage — an impressive feat. While my ground floor isn’t that large, I can confirm that the Dyson has an extensive reach. I rarely burn things when cooking (I’ll take my medal now, thank you), but my oven does produce some smoke. The last few times I’ve used my oven, I haven’t needed to open windows or preemptively remove the smoke detector. As soon as the air turns hazy, I hear the Dyson automatically turn to maximum airflow to quickly purify the air. The end result is safer air for my household, including the sensitive airways of my feathered friends.

The device detected a VO2 level spike when I was cooking dinner and using my oven—no windows open and no fan on. You can see how it quickly increases airflow and brings the air quality back to safe levels.

While I’ve anecdotally noticed a difference in the air quality in my house, including fewer asthma flare-ups, I wanted to get an expert’s opinion about how effective air purifiers like the Dyson are. I spoke with Bryan Buckley, HVAC expert and brand manager of One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning, who said that home design and layout can contribute to poor air quality. “Many homes built after the 1970s have been designed in a way that contributes to ‘tight home syndrome,’ which means dirty and stale air is locked in your home,” he said. He added that any air purifier — even a high-tech one like the Dyson — can’t remove dust settled on surfaces or crevices. Most air purifier units also can’t treat your whole home, and aren’t effective at eliminating molds. Buckley recommends an HVAC air purification system built into the ductwork for the biggest improvement to air quality. However, a standalone air purifier with HEPA filters to trap dust and carbon filters for smoke and odors, like the Dyson, can be a decent alternative if that’s not an option.

The Dyson also can’t tell you if there are virus particles — like the novel coronavirus — in your home. While the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that air purifiers can provide ventilation and reduce virus-containing particles, it recommends using filtration devices in conjunction with distancing and safety measures outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Heating and cooling capabilities

I recently wrote an in-depth guide to the best space heaters, where I tested eight models including the Dyson, which I named a top pick. You can read more about how it stacks up against other space heaters in that guide.

The bottom line is that it’s an efficient, full-room heater. The heating function disperses air across a large area and lets you control the temperature, flow speed, direction, and oscillation. It can raise the temperature of my living space by about 6 degrees Fahrenheit in under an hour — a welcome blast of warmth in the cold Canadian winters.

While it also has a “cooling” setting, this feature is a bit exaggerated and functions more like a fan. It’s not going to cool you down like an air conditioner, but can provide a nice breeze.

You can also reverse the fan direction so that it still purifies without pushing air your way. In auto mode — the setting I use most often — the fan speed adjusts to meet target air quality levels and your desired temperature. You can also oscillate the unit (anywhere from 0 to 350 degrees), set a timer, or turn on night mode, which dims the display and minimizes fan speed.

Upkeep and maintenance

Something I’ve always hated about air purifiers is the need to clean and swap out filters regularly. The Dyson automatically tracks filter use and lets you know how much life your filters have left. After four months of daily use on auto, my filters still have 90% life left, and there’s virtually no upkeep involved. Every once in a while, I dust the unit, but that’s the extent of it. When the time comes to replace the filters, at $80 each, I think I’ll feel like I’m getting my money’s worth, though I initially cringed when I saw that number. Naturally, the rate at which you’ll need to replace them will depend on how you use the machine, but I don’t expect to filters on my unit for another year or longer.

Safety features

This is one of the only space heaters I’ve tested that I feel comfortable leaving on unattended. No part of the unit ever gets too hot to the touch, so I don’t have to worry about having my animals around it. The machine will also automatically shut itself off if it detects the heating mode has been in use for over nine hours, just in case you forget to turn it off before going to bed or leaving the house. You can also control it from afar using the app, which provides added peace of mind. Additionally, a tip-over switch turns the unit off if it’s knocked over, though it’s very stable.

What are your alternatives?

This device is primarily for folks interested in heating and air purification. If you’re only interested in one, there are unitasking space heaters and air purifiers that are cheaper and perform just as well — heck, you can buy both our top-rated air purifier and space heater for half the cost of the Dyson. However, as far as I can find, the Dyson is one of only a few heater and air purifier combination units on the market, and the only one that has app compatibility.

Should you buy it?

It’s the unique combination of multiple features all in one unit — air purifier, heater, fan, and app compatibility — that make the Dyson worth the steep price tag. The app connectivity means the Dyson gives you the unique ability to have your air cleaned and see what’s floating around in it, so you can adjust your lifestyle. It might even help you detect problems, like a faulty appliance or furnace that needs fixing. For me, this unit does double duty: keeping my house warm during winter, and helping control my asthma and allergies. I would wholeheartedly recommend this product to anyone interested in air purification, particularly if you find data compelling and empowering. The Dyson has made me more aware of what actions inhibit air quality in my home, and I feel more knowledgeable about how to improve it.

The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool is one of the most high-tech air purifiers and space heaters available. If you’re only interested in dedicated space heaters or air purifiers, a less expensive unitasking model may be a better option. But if you want a unit with heating, fan, air purification, and app capabilities, the Dyson is a unique in the market and a worthy purchase.
