Buying Guide: The Best Dell Laptops for 2023
When you’re looking at Dell’s laptop product line, you’ll want to concentrate on which of its six main families of laptop best meets your needs. The ones to familiarize yourself with are Inspiron, XPS, Alienware, G Series, Latitude, and Precision. You’ll find both clamshell and 2-in-1 convertible entries in all of these families apart from the two gaming-oriented ones.
Stay tuned for a number of new gaming laptops from Dell, particularly the Alienware x16 and Alienware m18 mobile gaming machines, later in 2023.
Dell’s also working on new upgrades and additions to its high-end XPS line in 2023. Naturally, we intend to review each one.
Inspiron: The Mainstream Choice
For use in the home or school, Dell’s Inspiron brand comprises consumer laptops of every stripe: power machines, inexpensive “just enough” machines, big displays, and ultra-compacts. Whether you’re editing photos or managing your home finances, Inspiron’s copious options fit both screen-size and budget needs for most buyers. These machines are mostly Windows models; if you want something a little less expensive for simple tasks and browsing online, consider Dell’s Chromebooks, which put basic functionality into an affordable package that works great for kids and students.

Dell breaks its Inspiron line into three gradations or levels: 3000, 5000, and 7000 series. As you go up that stack, you tend to see more premium features, and higher relative pricing.
The number between the word “Inspiron” and the series number is typically the screen size of the laptop; an Inspiron 13 5000, for example, would be a 13-inch-screened laptop with middle-field characteristics.

XPS: The Power-User Class
The various guises of the Dell XPS 13 have been our “near-perfect” mainstream and power laptops for some time now. Refresh after refresh, Dell keeps tuning to keep this hardy machine on top. XPS signifies, on both the desktop and laptop side of the fence, a premium-design, fully decked-out machine that bridges demanding consumers and business users. It’s Dell’s line of power tools that are equally at home in a home office, a coffee shop, a conference room, or a high-stakes business meeting.

XPS-class laptops also sometimes serve as guinea pigs for introducing futuristic features, such as the new XPS 13 Plus, which ditches a physical touchpad in favor of a haptic feedback mechanism integrated into the palm rest.
These experiments aside, you won’t find a lot of variety in the XPS laptop line in terms of screen size or stratification, just configurable versions of the 13-inch-screened XPS 13 and 15-inch XPS 15 as both clamshells and swiveling-screen 2-in-1s. The XPS 17, the biggest model, has a 17-inch screen and is only available in a clamshell form factor.
Alienware and G Series: Full-Spectrum Gaming
If gaming is more your style, Dell’s Alienware brand delivers, if you’re on the market for a serious, blinged-out gaming cruiser. The latest components combine with premium construction and design, earning Alienware a well-deserved reputation as an aspirational brand among PC gamers. The Alienware machines tend to be big, brawny models with heavy graphics firepower and prices to match, though the brand known for its classic Area-51m bruiser has made forays into some leaner machines with its m15 and m17 series models and the even leaner Alienware X-Series.

Dell also sells gaming laptops under its G Series brand, introduced in 2018.
Before this new sub-brand’s introduction, this aggressively priced, lower-end line was part of the Inspiron family. Dell split it out as its own animal, and now the G Series is aimed at mainstream and budget-constrained gamers, with more modest designs than the Alienwares and component loadouts that are humbler but still workable for the latest games.

The G Series models hover above and below the $1,000 mark, while the Alienwares start north of that. Models in the G Series are gradated like the Inspirons, into G3, G5, and G7 classes, with the higher numbers indicating higher-grade builds and feature sets.
Latitude: The Umbrella for Business Machines
Then there’s business. Dell’s Latitude brand is the mainstay for its business laptops, competing with options from Lenovo (the ThinkPad T series) and HP (the various EliteBook lines). Latitude offers options for workers in the office or in the field, with a mix of thin-yet-powerful laptops and durable systems that can take a beating.
Like the Inspirons and the G Series, the Latitudes make use of the same 3000, 5000, and 7000 nomenclature, with the addition of a top-of-the-line 9000 series. The second number in the four-digit model number signifies the screen size. So a Dell Latitude 7390 is in the second-from-the-top of the four lines, with a 13.3-inch screen; a Latitude 9500 would be a top-grade machine with a 15.6-inch screen.

Beyond the “simply” durable units, the Latitude line is also home to a few costly, highly ruggedized models that are designed to be used in hostile environments: doused in water, clipped onto an ATV, exposed to cold and wind, and the like. These are branded under the Latitude Rugged Extreme moniker.
Precision: Workstation Laptops for Demanding Professionals
Mobile workstations are a breed of machines that share some traits with business models, but they stand apart for their Independent Software Vendor (ISV) certifications and, in some cases, specialized CPU and GPU options and support for highly precise error-correcting-code (ECC) memory.
ISV certifications give users of demanding professional business apps (in areas such as scientific computing, architecture, and engineering) assurances that the workstation will run up to snuff with a given application. Companies such as Adobe, Autodesk, Avid, Dassault Systemés, and Siemens tend to be the ISVs involved.

Dell’s line of mobile workstations is its Precision line, which comprises both laptop and desktop models. On the laptop side, Precision makes use of the same 3000, 5000, and 7000 series lingo as the other lines, with the screen size indicated within the model number.
A workstation might make use of consumer- or business-grade Intel CPUs, but the mark of a high-end workstation is the presence of a mobile Intel Xeon CPU and a dedicated workstation-grade graphics processor from Nvidia (RTX A-series, formerly Quadro) or AMD (Radeon Pro, much less common). The latter are in contrast to their consumer-GPU counterparts (GeForce GTX/RTX and Radeon RX, respectively) and are designed specifically for the kind of heavy-duty calculations that ISV-class applications require.
Dell also offers a few 2-in-1 models in the Precision line; convertible workstations are far less common than their consumer counterparts.

Samsung fixed two of our complaints from last year with a brighter display and stronger hinges while keeping the rest of the experience at the same high level. Microsoft backed the right horse in choosing to go with an AMD APU for the Surface Laptop 4. While it didn’t work out quite so well for the Ryzen 3000 series equipped Surface Laptop 3, when the Ryzen 4000 processors came around it catapulted the Surface Laptop 4 ahead of the pack in terms of performance and battery life.
The AMD Ryzen 7 4980U CPU in question offers solid performance when compared to the Surface Laptop’s direct competition, and with 16GB of RAM and a spritely 512GB of SSD storage you’ll be receiving unfaltering multitasking, and fantastic read/write speeds to boot.
The Surface Laptop 4’s display isn’t slacking either, with a sizable 15-inch display affording up to 2256 x 1540 pixels of on screen real estate. That’s screen space put to great use thanks to a bright, sharp, and vivid IPS panel that could only be bettered with a switch to OLED.

At a glance the MSI Katana 15 looks like any other mid to high-range gaming laptop, its keyboard is adorned with RGB, its chunky chassis screams “there’s power inside,” and there’s a reasonable amount of ports to suit all your gaming peripherals.
On paper, everything checks out too. A beastly 13th Gen Intel Core i7 processor resides alongside 16GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD storage, and a mighty Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 GPU. Everything’s coming up Milhouse with this one. Nothing here seems out of the ordinary, that is, until you catch sight of this machines price tag — and pull a double take hard enough to break the sound barrier.
All of this for a price below $2,000? Not bad at all. All of this for a price way lower than $2,000? Hot damn.
The picture I’ve painted here sounds a little too good to be true, and in all fairness, it is. The MSI Katana 15 is not a picture of perfection, it has a lackluster display and a dire battery life to name it’s two most prominent flaws. But if all you’re concerned about is getting the most bang for your buck? Look no further.

The Acer Chromebook 715 is a premium Chromebook that offers a durable aluminum chassis packed with great performance and over 10 hours of battery life.
Its Intel Core i5-8350U processor with 8GB of RAM hit 14,088 on the Geekbench 4 overall performance test, sailing past the 6,100 Chromebook average.
Its integrated numpad is also a boon for students. And even though its 15.6-inch display is a little dull, it’s sharp, at 1920 x 1080. If you like buying from Acer, this is among its best Chromebooks.

How we test laptops
When we bring a laptop into our laboratory, our goal is to see how it would work if you brought it into your home or office. While we use a number of industry-standard benchmarks such as Geekbench and 3DMark, we focus heavily on real-world tests that we have developed in-house.
To test endurance, the Laptop Mag Battery test surfs the web at 150 nits of brightness until the system runs out of juice. To judge pure processing power, we use a giant spreadsheet macro that matches 65,000 names with their addresses, a video transcoder that converts a 4K video to 1080p and the Geekbench 4 synthetic test.
We measure graphics prowess with both 3DMark Ice Storm / Fire Strike and a series of actual game titles.
We use a colorimeter to measure screen brightness and color gamut while other instruments help us determine a laptop’s key travel and ambient heat. See how we test laptops for more details on our benchmarking procedures.
Choosing the right laptop
You can spend a lot of time delving into specs, but here are the key components to think about. If you just want really good mainstream performance, go for a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a 1080p screen.
- Screen Resolution: Unfortunately, 66 percent of consumer laptops and 51 percent of business systems have low-res screens. If at all possible, get a display with a 1920 x 1080 (aka 1080p, or full HD) or higher resolution.
- CPU: An Intel Core i5 provides good mainstream performance. Some budget systems will come with Core i3, Celeron or Pentium CPUs, which are good for basic tasks, but not heavy multitasking.
Get a Core i7 or a quad core processor (serial number ends in HQ or HK) for gaming or high-end productivity tasks such as video editing and 3D modeling. - RAM: 8GB is ideal for most users. 4GB is acceptable for budget systems. Secondary laptops and Chromebooks may have less.
- Storage: Unless you’re a gamer or a power user, 256GB of internal storage is probably enough. If at all possible, get an SSD (solid-state drive) rather than a hard drive, because it’s going to make your computer a lot faster.
- Graphics Chip: Gamers and creative professionals need to do some research and figure out which discrete GPU is good enough to run their favorite software. Everyone else will be happy with the built-in Intel HD Graphics that come with the CPU.

Top 15″
laptops are versatile devices that strike a balance between portability
and functionality, making laptops an excellent choice for students and
creative users who work both at home and in the office.
While 16-inch and 14-inch laptops are gradually taking their place in the market, the best 15-inch laptops remain the best laptops for students, creative users and office workers. If you find that the best 17-inch laptops are too big and heavy to carry around, and 13-inch laptops (another popular option) are too small for comfortable work, then 15-inch laptops are the perfect choice.
On the other hand, 15″ notebooks offer
enough space to accommodate powerful internal components, large
screens and batteries, saving room for strong airflow,
to ensure proper cooling of powerful components when performing
resource intensive tasks.
At the same time, laptops remain quite light, compact
and therefore convenient for commuting.
We’ve tested countless 15 inch laptops over the years and are here to help you find the perfect laptop whether you’re looking for something for work or play. If you ask most of our employees
editors, we will tell you that we do not see the need for a new large-sized MacBook Air,
as it destroys the idea of the Air series. Accept
taking into account the fact that the 15-inch model launched by Apple is essentially an oversized
13-inch MacBook Air with those
the same internal characteristics as the younger model, this is a real
pretense.
Still, it’s hard to deny that the MacBook Air 15 (2023) is a great laptop in its own right.
Attractive design, brilliant screen and classic Apple features, improved speakers,
not available on the 13″ model. Anyone who counted on updating the screen in
his laptop, will be overjoyed, especially since he actually
not much thicker or heavier than the 13-inch model.
During testing, we noticed that the MacBook Air 15 (2023) appears to be specifically
designed for the same level of performance as the 13″ model.
The laptop runs great, with macOS Ventura running fast and apps like Apple TV+, Chrome, and Photoshop opening
quickly and without delay. We also found that Apple promised up to 15
hours of wireless web browsing and 18 hours of video production
approximately true.

2. Acer
Aspire 5 (2022)

Having tested the 14″ laptop from the Aspire 5 series, we can confidently
say it’s a great choice if you want a functional 15″
laptop at an affordable price. Of course the Aspire 5 is not
no compromises, these include an integrated webcam with a resolution
720p and mediocre speakers. But there are other things that for their money
laptop works great.
We found its 1080p screen bright and clear,
with good viewing angles and a matte finish that reduces glare
and reflections. Connection methods include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and an Ethernet port, making the laptop suitable
for professionals, but not for content creators, which is what Acer hopes for.
Not that he is lagging behind in terms of
performance. The laptop delivers decent performance in this
price category, squeezing out 1417 single-core performance points and 4440
multi-core performance scores in our tests. Relying on it
performance during our testing, we found the laptop
a respectable “office laptop” and a great study laptop, even if
its performance is unimpressive.

3. Dell XPS
15 (2023)
A decent premium alternative for Windows users.

support for ray tracing – if your choice falls on one of the flagship
configurations. The laptop runs smoothly, without delays and other problems,
no breakdowns while we were doing creative work. Throughout
work cycle, effective cooling was maintained, avoiding overheating of the laptop.
4. HP Victus 15
Awesome 15″ gaming laptop.

HP Victus 15 is another great example
that in search of a great budget gaming laptop, 15-inch model
exactly what you need. At a relatively affordable HP price
The Victus 15 boasts high performance,
The RTX 3050 Ti is ready to take the hit of today’s games, as long as you’re ready to put up with
Medium settings and 1080p resolution.
While not the most powerful gaming laptop our review showed, it plays competitive online games well with a fast 144Hz panel, though more graphically demanding games can stress the laptop.
Just be aware that the battery life of this one is pitifully short, lasting just over four hours in our battery tests. You may want to stay close to an outlet.
For the money, though, this is an excellent gaming laptop, and the high build quality means your kids and teens won’t wreck the laptop with careless keystrokes. If you’re after a more powerful gaming laptop, check out the Razer Blade 15 below.

it can be an expensive laptop – a characteristic of the entire Razer Blade series
– the latest Razer Blade 15 (2022) overwhelms with its performance,
capable of spinning just about every game you feed him.

Opinion
Lenovo’s Legion S7 is “the lightest laptop with RTX
in the world” – and while we
not sure about the veracity of this statement (e.g. ROG Flow
Asus’ Z13 is lighter, although it’s a laptop/tablet hybrid), at around 1.9 kilograms.
Legion S7 is really amazingly light,
especially when compared to other gaming laptops.
Not only does it pack great specs, including Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 mobile graphics cards that can play at medium to high graphics settings, it’s all framed in a stylish and well-built chassis.
We were able to hit over 60fps with Ultra graphics settings in recent games during testing, but we found that some settings, such as lowering texture detail to medium, helped to increase frame rates significantly. The overall performance of the processor is strong, which helps it handle common tasks like web browsing and video calls without lag in the user interface.
The only thing that might disappoint a potential user is the heat management. A thin body undercuts thermal performance, while massive competitors do a much better job. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 is an iconic name in the gaming laptop world, so we were confident this year’s model would be good – we just didn’t realize it would be that good. The fact is, this is one of the best gaming laptops we’ve ever tested, and it’s no surprise that it’s one of the best 15-inch laptops out there.
Powered by the latest AMD Ryzen 9 processors with Nvidia RTX 3070 graphics, this laptop can handle just about anything you throw at it, including 1440p resolution with a 240Hz refresh rate. In our tests, the graphics and overall performance of the laptop was excellent, beating the Asus TUF Dash F15 and the Gigabyte Aorus 17G.
But this is by no means a budget
laptop is a premium gaming system. And this fact is even harder to swallow, given the lack of
webcams, as well as a cropped keyboard format. However, the laptop

Another affordable 15″ gaming laptop.

- Obsolete touchpad;
- Has difficulty with some non-gaming tasks;
Gigabyte has a solid track record of making gaming laptops that last
machines with high performance relative to the asking price.
And Gigabyte G5 fully complies
trend, adding a bit of portability to the benefit of wearers. don’t get us
wrong; it still looks like a bulky gaming laptop, but if
you were embarrassed to wear such laptops, at least this model looks
pretty stylish and won’t break your back.
Most importantly, we found that its performance
very difficult to beat in this price segment – even if you have a model
2022 with RTX 3000 graphics. Maybe
it’s not going to play in 4K resolution, but

Just be aware that the laptop was struggling with
resource-intensive workloads such as real-time strategy games
