Computer application | it’s… What is a Computer Application?
InterpretationTranslation
- Computer application
-
Computer program is a sequence of instructions designed to be executed by a computer control device. Most often, a program image is stored as an executable module (a single file or a group of files). From this image, usually on disk, an executable program in RAM can be built by a software loader. Depending on the context, the term in question may also refer to the source code of the program.
In system programming, there is a more formal definition of a program as data and machine codes placed in the computer’s RAM and executed by the processor to achieve some goal.
Two features are emphasized here: the location of the program in memory and its execution by the processor.
The process of creating computer programs is called “programming”, and people involved in this type of activity are called programmers. When developing programs, errors often penetrate into them. A program is buggy if it fails, fails, or produces incorrect results for some data.
The process of finding and fixing errors in programs is called debugging. The number of errors in programs is usually not known in advance. Therefore, the duration of program debugging is not known in advance. A program (algorithm) does not contain errors if it gives correct results for all valid data.
Writing program source codes using programming languages makes it easier for humans to understand and edit. This, in particular, is helped by comments that are allowed in the syntax of most languages. For execution on a computer, the finished program text is converted (compiled) into machine code.
Programs with publicly available source code are called open source. Computer programs are subject to copyright. Authors and copyright holders of programs have the right to restrict access to source codes of programs that are their intellectual property.
Some programming languages allow you to do without prior compilation of the program and translate it into machine code instructions directly at runtime. This process is called dynamic compilation, and it allows you to achieve greater portability of programs between different hardware and software platforms while retaining many of the advantages of compilation.
Interpreted programs for which there is generally no compilation process and which are interpreted by the operating system or special interpreter programs are called scripts or “scripts”.
The source texts of computer programs in most programming languages consist of a list of instructions that accurately describe the underlying algorithm.
This approach in programming is called imperative . However, other programming methodologies also apply. For example, a description of the initial and required characteristics of the data being processed and providing a choice of an appropriate solution algorithm to a specialized interpreter program – this approach is called declarative programming . Also, functional and logic programming apply.
Most computer users use programs designed to perform specific application tasks, such as preparing and processing documents, mathematical calculations, image processing, etc. The corresponding software is referred to as application software or application software . Management of the components of the computing system and the formation of an environment for the functioning of application programs is undertaken by system software , the most important component of which is the operating system.

Useful
what is it. What’s in the Start
In this lesson we’ll talk about computer programs – those icons that are on the desktop and in the Start menu. We do not need all of them, so we will only talk about those that can be useful for work and leisure.
I will tell you about the most popular programs that are found on different Windows computers. Therefore, most likely, you will not find some of them.
What is a program
A computer program (application) is a shell that runs files. Usually, it not only launches, but also allows you to work with them: edit, create new files.
For example, a program for working with Microsoft Word documents. It is designed to print text. And by default, all files of this type are opened in it: documents, articles, abstracts and others.
It turns out that if there is no such application on the computer, then similar files simply will not open. But on another computer, where it is, they will run.
When we open a file, Windows understands what type of data it contains. She instantly selects a suitable application and launches this file in it.
Files for which the system cannot find a program look like this:
And those for which there is an application are indicated by the corresponding icon.
Start menu
Start is the button at the very bottom of the screen on the left side. Here’s what it looks like:
or
Clicking this button will bring up a small rectangular box with a list of various icons and items.
The Start menu on your computer may look a little different.
Consider the most important menu items:
Computer (This computer) is the most important place in the computer. Through “My Computer” opens Local drives, CD and DVD drives, flash drives, cameras and cameras.
Documents, Music, Pictures are some of the few folders on a PC. Despite the fact that these folders have flashy names, it is better not to store important information in them.
Control Panel – Set up your computer and devices connected to it.
Help and Support is like a computer tutorial. Alas, this textbook is too “abstruse” – it is quite difficult to learn something from it.
Find programs and files (Search) – helps you find programs, files or folders on your computer if you don’t remember exactly where they are located.
Shutdown (Shutdown) – Properly shuts down the computer.
Devices and Printers (Printers and Faxes) – Set up external devices on your computer (printer, fax machine, webcam, etc.).
Applications – icons of applications installed on your computer are located here. We will talk more about them later.
Programs
There are standard programs and there are additional ones. Standard ones are those applications that are available on any computer, and additional ones are those that are not included in the usual set, they are installed separately.
Let’s talk about the standard ones first:
Internet Explorer is an application with which you can navigate the Internet, that is, open websites.
Windows Media Player is a player for music and video files.
Outlook Express – Receive and send emails.
Windows Movie Maker is a program for creating and editing videos.
Games are a set of simple computer games.
Start –› Programs –› Accessories:
WordPad – creating and editing text (simplified MS Word).
Notepad is the simplest application for creating and editing text. It can only be printed and saved without registration.
Calculator – I think it’s clear what it is.
Paint is a simple graphics editor that allows you to draw and manipulate images.
Sound Recorder (Entertainment –› Sound Recorder) — sound/voice recording. In order to use it, there must be a microphone.
Accessibility – Several simple and convenient applications for people with disabilities.
Notes – here you can make notes, record important events. It is as if a piece of paper is attached to the screen, on which you can print a reminder note.
Scissors – “photographing” the screen or part of it (screenshot).
Math input panel – input of mathematical formulas.
And now let’s deal with additional programs. These are applications that are not originally in the Windows system, they are installed separately.
Microsoft Office Suite:
Microsoft Word – work with text and documents. The most famous and widespread text editor.
Microsoft Excel – Calculations, tables and charts.
Microsoft Access – creating, editing databases, processing large amounts of information.
Microsoft Outlook – work with e-mail.
Microsoft PowerPoint – creating presentations (visual presentation of any information).
Other applications:
WinRaR (7-Zip, WinZip) is an archiver. Packs and compresses files.
Winamp – plays music and video.
K-Lite Codec Pack (Media Player Classic) – plays music and video.
KMPlayer – plays music and video.
ACDSee – Shows photos and drawings.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Dr.Web, Norton AntiVirus, Avast!, NOD32, or anything else with the word AntiVirus in its name – protection against viruses.
Nero – burning CDs and DVDs.
Google Chrome, Opera, Mozilla Firefox, Yandex is a program with which you can navigate the Internet, that is, open websites. Same as Internet Explorer, only better.
Adobe Photoshop – working with computer graphics, processing photos and pictures.
Skype – voice and video calls over the Internet, correspondence.
How programs get into a computer
In order for a program to appear on a computer, it must be installed there. Windows 10 has many apps in the Store. To install, just go to “Start” → “Microsoft Store” and download the necessary through it.
Usually, after this, the newly installed application appears in the Start button. You can start using them right away.
But most programs (including drivers) are installed differently:
- Open the installation file.
- Follow the instructions in the window.
- We are waiting for all files to be uploaded to the system.
Note. Games are installed according to the same principle: run the file and wait until the game is added to the computer.
Where to download
Each program has an official website. This is the address on the Internet where developers post information, news and other data. And usually you can download the installation file from this site.
In addition to the official site, there are many other addresses where you can download the same application. But I do not advise doing this, because with it you can get a virus.
How to find the official website:
1. Open Yandex (yandex. ru). In the search bar, type the name of the application and click “Find”.
2. Usually the very first result is the official site. Often it has the same name as the program and is marked with a special icon.
If you’re not sure if the site is official, look up Wikipedia in the list of results.
The Wikipedia page will list the official site.
How to download the installation file:
The official site should have a button or link for downloading. If it is not on the main page, then you need to go to the section “Download”, “Upload”, “Download” or with a similar name.
Click on the link and the installation file is immediately downloaded.
If an additional window opens after clicking on the link, it means that you need to select a location on the computer where the file will be downloaded. For example, the Downloads folder. And then click “Save”.
After the download is completed, the file will be in the Downloads folder.
Important! Download applications only from official sites, otherwise you risk getting a virus.
How to install
Despite the fact that there are many programs, they are installed in approximately the same way. The principle is as follows: run the installation file and follow the instructions. Usually you just need to click “Next” or “Next”.
I’ll use OpenOfiice as an example. You do not need to download this application – just look at the installation process itself.
Each step is shown in the picture. Use the arrows to move between them. To enlarge the picture, click on it.
After installation, an icon will appear on the desktop and/or in the Start button to start.
Note. There are some versions that do not need to be installed. They are called Portable. In this case, simply run the file and the application will open. This is convenient – after all, such a program can be run on someone else’s computer, even from a flash drive.
