One of the best ways to see how hard you’re working out is by wearing a heart-rate monitor. While wearables like smartwatches and smart rings can measure your heart rate easily on the go, a chest strap heart-rate monitor offers some of the most accurate heart-rate readings. Many chest strap heart-rate monitors can also easily pair with your smartwatch, fitness tracker or smartphone.

Heart-rate monitors are helpful for a range of scenarios, including if you’re an athlete training for a race, since they can help you improve your performance or adjust your goals. For the average person who works out for health or fun, tracking your heart rate can keep you in tune with your cardiovascular system, such as monitoring irregular heart rhythms or knowing your heart rate variability, or HRV.

Chest strap heart-rate monitors have a reputation for being uncomfortable to wear during exercise, but we found a few that passed the wear test. Below, you’ll find our picks for the best chest strap heart-rate monitors. We update this list periodically as new models become available.

How we tested chest strap heart-rate monitors 

Function during exercise: I tested each one of these heart-rate monitors during strength training and walking workouts to see how well they work for various activities.

Comfort: I rated them based on how comfortable the chest strap felt during my workouts.

Features: I considered the function of various features, like connectivity to other devices or apps, and whether other metrics are captured in addition to heart rate. I also looked at the battery life. 

Compared it to a trusted heart-rate monitor: I compared it to my Apple Watch, which captures my heart rate throughout my workouts. While this might not be the best method of testing for accuracy, it’s what I had available to me, and the Apple Watch data is easy to read and consistent.

Factors to consider

  • Determine what type of activity you will be doing while wearing a chest strap heart-rate monitor. Most are suitable for a range of cardio activities, from running to cycling, but not all would work for swimming, for example.
  • Decide how much you’re willing to spend on a chest strap heart-rate monitor. You can find reliable ones for under $50, but if you want all the bells and whistles you can expect to spend over $150.
  • Figure out how important battery life is to you and how often you want to charge or replace it. Some chest strap heart-rate monitor batteries can last over a year, while others can last around 500 hours. This will vary per device and how often you use it.
  • Decide if you will be connecting the heart-rate monitor mainly to your smartphone or if you plan on connecting it to other devices. This will influence whether you want it to have ANT Plus or Bluetooth connectivity. Most now come with both, but it’s still important to check.

How to choose a chest strap heart-rate monitor

When it comes to choosing the best heart-rate monitor chest strap for your workout, many of the factors in your buying decision will be based on personal preferences and your workout regimen. Here are a few things to look at while shopping.

Strap width: Before you buy, consider whether you’d be more comfortable with a heart-rate tracker that uses a slim strap or a wider one.

Module size: Some chest straps use tiny modules (the plastic puck-like part) that don’t extend over the edges of the strap. Others, however, use larger monitors to measure your heart rate. Which style you choose to track your workout depends on your comfort preference.

Internal storage: If you don’t like to hold your smartphone during your workout, opt for a heart-rate training monitor that can store your data in its own built-in storage. You can later transfer your heart-rate reading to your phone via your monitor’s companion app.

Metrics: Consider what you want to monitor during your workout. Higher-end models capture real-time data covering everything from run cadence to stride length, as well as things like blood pressure, calorie burn and heart-rate variability to help you reach your fitness goals, while more basic models might track only your heart rate.

Battery: A wearable chest strap monitor can have all kinds of power sources. Some have a rechargeable battery. Others may have super-long battery life, but the battery isn’t user replaceable or rechargeable. A longer battery life is always convenient — no one wants a monitor to peter out during a run — but there are lots of options. Make sure to check the description for battery life before buying a monitor.

Chest strap vs. wrist-worn heart-rate monitors: Chest strap and wrist-worn heart-rate monitors are both used to measure heart rate, but they use different methods to provide readings.  

Electrical heart-rate sensors, found most commonly in chest strap heart-rate monitors, can detect electrical currents produced by your heart, somewhat similarly to what is done at the doctor’s office with an ECG. These are considered the most accurate heart-rate readings because the electrical sensor can handle measuring your heart rate even during vigorous activity. 

Optical heart-rate sensors use an LED light to track your pulse rate in the arteries as blood pumps through them. Optical heart-rate sensors are found in smartwatches and are useful to read your heart rate while at rest or walking, but are less reliable for high-intensity activity because the readings can be distorted.

ANT Plus vs. Bluetooth: Most wrist-worn heart-rate monitors like the Apple Watch use Bluetooth, which only lets you connect to one device. For example, if you’re recording an outdoor run, you can only connect your Apple Watch to your iPhone. 

ANT Plus technology, however, lets you wirelessly connect to multiple devices at once. This is a good option for athletes who are trying to track data from multiple sources. You can find this form of technology on devices like chest strap heart-rate monitors, indoor or outdoor bike computers and some smartwatches. 

However, if you’re planning on using a device that uses only ANT Plus technology and want to connect it to your smartphone, know that some Androids have ANT Plus technology capabilities, while iPhones do not. To find out if your device is capable of connecting to your Android, you have to find the ANT Plus Plugins app in the Google Play store and browse its compatible device directory. If you have an iPhone or an Android that does not have the capability to connect to your ANT Plus device, you will need an adapter to add to your phone.

The truth is a little less exciting—and a lot more effective: It’s just a good tool to make the most of your sweat sessions, whether you’re still learning your way around the gym, coming back to your fitness routine after a hiatus, or training at an elite level. The Garmin HRM-Dual performed well right out of the gate. It paired quickly and easily with everything I tried—my Wahoo bike computer, the Strava app, and the Stages bike at my gym—and had no issues when I connected it to the latter two simultaneously while using my Bluetooth earbuds with my smartphone. It was accurate and comfortable, and scored bonus points for Garmin’s stellar reputation as a leader and trusted brand in the wearable technology space. 

The Dual won all the points for user-friendliness. I have limited patience for long instruction manuals and complicated set-up processes. With the Dual, I didn’t have to deal with any of this. The hook and loop closure system made it easy to don and doff. Pairing it with my other devices couldn’t have been easier, too. Plus, it has a handy little (non-scratchy) tag that displays washing instructions. (Just snap the sensor off and throw it in the washing machine on cold after every seventh use.)

I couldn’t have asked for a more accurate or consistent product. Over many hours of use, it gave me heart rate readings that aligned with my perceived effort. 

I wouldn’t describe any chest strap heart rate monitor as particularly comfortable. But like the others I tried, once I started my workout, I hardly noticed it was there.  And although I didn’t have the opportunity to test this product over a long-term period, I’d expect it to perform well over time based on the product specs. According to the manufacturer, the battery lasts up to 3.5 years, assuming you use it for one hour per day. 

Based on the Amazon reviews, I’m not the only one who would wholeheartedly recommend the Garmin Dual. With over 11 thousand reviews, it received an average rating of 4.5 stars. 

In the spirit of total transparency, I have to report that in one two-plus hour bike ride, I experienced two five-minute periods where the Dual gave me inaccurate readings. I’m not subtracting points for these momentary glitches, given the fact that I put this product through more than six hours of testing. Plus, it certainly could have been a case of user error. The user manual suggests cleaning and drying the removable sensor after every use, which I did not do.

Chest strap heart rate monitors feature a long strip of elastic with a heart rate sensor. They also have a fastener attached that allows you to wrap it around the circumference of the chest. Its job is to analyze electrical signals from your heart to tell you how many times your heart beats per minute. Depending on the app you’re using and/or what type of exercise you’re doing, you’ll see that reading on your phone, your cyclometer, your laptop or tablet screen, or on your cardio machine’s console. You can connect your chest strap monitor directly to countless other technologies, including an Apple Watch, Garmin device, Peloton, and to apps like Strava. Heart rate data can be super valuable, no matter what your fitness goals are. “Anyone can benefit,” says Dr. Stacy Sims, exercise physiologist and author. 

Once you know your maximum heart rate, you can determine your training zones and create an individualized plan to optimize every workout. How much time you spend in each zone during a given session depends on your goals, the purpose of that particular workout, and how you’re recovering. “It also allows the individual to see how the body is adapting,” Sims explains. For example, if your heart rate doesn’t drop quickly between hard efforts or it’s sluggish when you increase your effort, you might be fatigued and need to back off. 

One of the heart rate monitors’ most important benefits is that they can prevent you from overtraining, says Sims. were more common among users with darker skin across all the products they tested. As one of that study’s authors told Stat, many of the manufacturers did not emphasize diversity of test subjects in their product development process. 

That said, if you’d prefer to wear something all day, a wrist-based monitor may be better. “There is no ideal sensor, just compromises or tradeoffs,” says Carl Valle, USATF level II coach and sports technologist. While chest strap models are reliably accurate during exercise, they weren’t designed to be worn all day. For many, the added step of putting it on and taking it off poses a barrier. Wrist sensors aren’t known for their accuracy, but they can help you analyze trends, especially in conjunction with other metrics. 

Regardless of which type of heart rate monitor you choose, you’ll want to take other data points into account. “[Using several metrics] reveals or teases out an assessment between what the user is doing and the effort they are putting into the activity,” says Valle. That means looking at factors like rate of perceived exertion (RPE), wattage, and pace as well.

Our Testing Process

To find the best chest heart rate monitors, I spent several hours researching the product category to see what features various products offered, what people were saying about them, and which were most popular. I narrowed my selections down to my top five picks and shared them with the Ness Team with a brief explanation of what made each product stand out. The Nessie then purchased these options for testing.

My plan was to use each product for at least a week’s worth of workouts, including bike rides, HIIT training, and strength training. The bulk of my testing time was spent using each heart rate monitor with my Wahoo Bolt Element cycling computer. For my indoor cycling workouts, I paired each heart rate monitor with Strava and the Stages indoor bike console while my phone was simultaneously connected to Bluetooth headphones. For the strength and HIIT sessions, I paired each product with the Strava app. 

The only product that didn’t go through the full testing process exception was the Polar H-10. Because I couldn’t get it to pair with my cycling computer, I only tested it with the Stages bike and Strava and did not take it through a full week’s worth of workouts.

Who Should Buy Chest Strap Heart Rate Monitors? 

Chest strap heart rate monitors can provide valuable data for all kinds of people, not just serious athletes. Whether you’re training at an elite level or simply trying to improve your fitness, chest strap heart rate monitors are a great tool for people engaging in endurance activities. These may include running, cycling, rowing, hiking, jogging, walking, and Nordic skiing. Swimmers can also benefit, provided the product is designed for underwater use. (Most heart rate monitors aren’t.) Swimmers should note that the wrist sensors are generally not effective underwater, regardless of whether the device is waterproof. Though all the products we tested were supposed to be waterproof, only the Polar h20 is designed for swimming. 

Staying in the right heart rate zone can help you optimize your workouts, progress faster, and recover more quickly. They can also be an excellent tool for people who are going through cardiac rehabilitation with medical supervision. During cardiac physical therapy, data from your heart rate monitor will ensure that you’re exercising within your target range. Also, combining that data with RPE can also give important information your progress. For example, tolerating a certain heart rate zone more easily indicates improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and endurance. Your healthcare practitioner may ask you to wear your heart rate monitor at home as well. 

Which Features Matter Most When Buying Chest Strap Heart Rate Monitors?

  • User-friendliness: You’ll want to consider how easy it is to take the HRM on and off and how quickly and easily it pairs with your other devices via Bluetooth. (Or ANT+, a type of wireless connection that uses the same frequency as Bluetooth and WiFi but transmits data more slowly and works within shorter ranges, usually five feet or less). 
  • Accuracy: Does the product capture an accurate representation of your heart rate? If you have a history of training with heart rate data, you probably have a sense of where your heart rate will fall based on your subjective effort level. If not, you can take your pulse manually at your neck or wrist to see how closely your count matches your device. You can also connect your heart rate monitor to multiple devices (i.e. Strava, the Apple HealthKit app, or the console on your gym’s cardio machine) to see if they’re consistent with one another. 
  • Consistency: A good heart rate monitor will consistently capture data without breaks or glitches throughout even the longest, sweatiest workouts. 
  • Comfort: A heart rate monitor can excel in every other area, but if it’s uncomfortable to the point where it’s distracting or annoying, chances are, you won’t wear it. This means that it should also be easy to adjust to fit your body just right. When the monitor is on, it should feel taut without being constricting—if you can’t fully expand your ribs to breathe, that’s a problem.

If any chest strap heart rate monitor could ever earn the title of “sexiest,” it would be the Wahoo Tickr. Its sleek design includes an oblong shape and shiny surface. Like the Garmin Dual, pairing it with my devices was a breeze, it performed accurately and consistently over long periods, and was just as comfortable as any of the products I tested. 

The first thing I noticed about the Tickr was its relatively thin profile and smooth surface. Unlike most of the other heart rate monitors I tried, which featured a hook and loop closure system, the Wahoo has a snap closure. This made donning and doffing a breeze. 

The Tickr also features LED lights that blink to indicate a successful connection with any devices you’re pairing it with. While I found it a little awkward to crane my neck down to get a good look at the light, this could be a super useful feature, particularly for those times when you’re not sure if your device is recognizing the heart rate monitor. I could tell mine was working because an accurate heart rating reading would appear on my paired devices almost immediately.  With the easy snap-on/snap-off design, you can simply unsnap the sensor from the chest strap to wash the strap. 

Like the Garmin Dual, the Tickr gave one funky reading for about ten minutes during a long bike ride. The device said my heart rate was more than 30 beats per minute higher than my previously measured maximum heart rate. I still confidently recommend this product because this only happened for a short period of time during one workout out of many. Plus, several factors can interfere with chest strap heart rate monitor performance, including wind, synthetic workout apparel materials (which I always wear), and electrical interference from things like power lines.

Want to try training with heart rate data but on a tight budget? I’d wholeheartedly recommend the CooSpo. It does everything you need it to do at a fraction of its competitors’ prices. 

Like the other products I tested, it connected smoothly to every other Bluetooth device I paired it with and consistently gave accurate readings (with zero glitchy behavior). I didn’t have problems figuring out how to use it, either. It would have been nice if it showed up in my devices as “CooSpo” (instead, it showed up as a series of numbers) but this wasn’t a huge deal. 

While some users will appreciate the beeping sound it makes every time a successful connection is made, this wasn’t a selling point for me. I found it distracting and a little redundant, as I could tell I was connected because I got an almost instant, accurate reading as soon as I put it on. 

With its nondescript look, bulkier sensor shape, and slightly lower quality elastic strap, the CooSpo isn’t going to win any design awards. But because it functions so well, and didn’t feel markedly different from the other products once I put it on, I’d confidently recommend it if you’re looking for a budget-friendly way to try heart rate training.

The Garmin HRM-Pro has some very attractive features. It connected easily and quickly to every device I tried. Plus, with its sleek design and a slim profile, it got points for comfort and aesthetics. It was also consistently accurate over a variety of workouts. 

However, without a Garmin watch, I couldn’t take advantage of all of its features. If you own a compatible Garmin watch, it might be worth the higher price tag. Otherwise, I’d save my money.

I really wanted to like the Polar H-10. Its slim, shiny design was a definite plus. The elastic band felt softer than the others and had little anti-slip texturing on the inside. This gave it high scores for comfort. When it paired with my devices (the Strava app and the indoor bike console at my gym), it was accurate and consistent. That said, because of its inability to pair with my bike computer, I didn’t use it nearly as much as the others. (I used it for less than an hour, as compared to the six to eight hours I spent testing its competitors.)

But, again it wouldn’t pair with my cycling computer no matter what I tried. (And believe me, I tried everything.) That was a total deal-breaker for me. Given how easily every other monitor paired with the computer, I just can’t recommend the H-10. That said, other reviewers seem to love it.

What should I do if the chest heart rate sensor does not work?

In this article we will tell you what to do if the chest heart rate sensor stops working correctly and synchronizes with the watch?

1. If the pulse is too low.

Check in the settings on the watch in which system your heart rate is displayed in% or in heart rate beats. (If in % then change to beats)

2. Temporary loss of heart rate during exercise.

This may be due to poor contact between the belt and the skin

Wash the silicone sensor elements before use. During training, re-moisturizing is not required, as the body releases sweat and salts, and they conduct eclectic signals well.

✔ Tighten the sensor strap tightly, it must not dangle or move on the body.

✔ Try different sensor positions, you can move it to the left. Or try flipping the sensor so that the logo is upside down.

Standard sensor position is centered at heart level .

✔ Chest hair can also weaken the signal. Try to remove them.

✔ Use cotton clothing. Synthetics often create static electricity and greatly affect the accuracy of the sensor, especially in wet or windy weather.

✔ Also temporary loss of heart rate can be caused by:
Low battery

You can check the charge in the Polar Beat app . This applies to Polar sensors.
If you have another Garmin or Suunto sensor, there is another symptom indicating a dead battery.
Pulse sticks to one value for a long time or it is not displayed.

3. Sensor stopped pairing after battery change.

✔ Check that the lid is closed tightly, this applies to the Polar and Suunto sensors.

While if you have a sensor from Garmin , the opposite problem may occur, namely, when replacing the battery, the screws are tightened. The cover in this case often cracks, and moisture penetrates into the sensor. As a result, the sensor stops working. Then the sensor dries up and the belt works again, and so on in a circle.

If you have a Polar or Suunto sensor and the lid is tightly closed, but the sensor does not work.

✔ Reset it.

To do this, remove the battery, press the metal latches that are attached to the belt with your fingers and hold for 30 seconds. Then insert the battery and try connecting the sensor again.

4. The battery runs out quickly.

✔ The most common reason is poor battery quality.
Many people do not recommend using Sony batteries, or any other cheap batteries. Upon purchase, a brand battery is included with the sensor ( Panasonic CR 2025 3V ). It is better to use exactly the same or a different brand of Durasel.

✔ The second possible cause is moisture getting inside the sensor. Remove the battery, check the presence of a silicone cuff and the integrity of the cover body. If you see oxidation on the internal elements of the sensor, then clean them and dry the inside well with a hair dryer. Replace the battery cover if necessary.

Severe wear of the electrodes on the sensor tape.

✔ An electrical multimeter can be used to check for wear.

To do this, disconnect the sensor from the belt. Next, connect the silicone contacts to each other. On the multimeter, set the slider to resistance. And measure the resistance by placing the test probes on the sensor mounting element. The resistance must be less than 10 kilo ohms. In our video, the resistance is 1.6 kiloohms, which means that the belt is in good condition. For comparison, the second belt gives us 27 kilo-ohms, this one is a lot. Which means he’s no longer fit for work. And it can be thrown away.

Friends want to point out that

85% Poor sensor performance is either a dead battery or poor battery quality.

7% of cases are due to a worn sensor belt.

5% cases this is an incorrect position of the sensor on the body.

3% cases this is moisture getting inside the sensor.

In order for the sensor to last as long as possible, special care is required.

1. When replacing batteries, open the cover with a wooden object or other soft object.

2. Disconnect the connector from the belt after each use.

3. Wash the belt regularly with mild soap and water (do not use moisturizing soap or other harsh detergents). By the way, dirt worsens the elasticity and operation of the heart rate sensor.

4. Do not wring out the tape after washing.

5. After drying, do not roll up the sensor, store it in a cool and dry place.

6. Do not leave the sensor in direct sunlight for a long time.

Pairing your heart rate sensor with your watch

When using the optional Polar chest strap, the watch does not measure wrist heart rate.

  1. Attach the moistened heart rate sensor.
  2. In the watch menu, go to General settings > Pair and sync > Connect a sensor or other device and press OK.
  3. Touch the heart rate sensor with the watch and wait for it to be detected.
  4. As soon as the heart rate sensor is found, the display will show the device ID, for example Polar h20 xxxxxxxx. Click OK to start connecting.
  5. The display shows Pairing completed.

Pairing the stride sensor with your watch

  1. In the watch menu, go to General settings > Pair and sync > Connect a sensor or other device and press OK.
  2. The clock starts searching for the sensor. Touch the clock sensor and wait for it to be detected.
  3. Once the sensor has been found, the display will show the device ID. Click OK to start connecting.
  4. The display shows Pairing completed.

Stride sensor calibration

There are two ways to manually calibrate the stride sensor using the quick menu. Select one of the running sport profiles, and then select Stride Sensor Calibration > Calibrate While Running or Calibration Factor.

  • Calibrate while running: Start your workout and run the distance you know. The distance must be more than 400 meters. After that, click OK to start the step. Set the distance you have run and press OK. Calibration factor updated.
    Please note that you cannot use the interval timer during calibration. If you turn on the interval timer, the watch will ask you to turn it off to enable manual stride sensor calibration. You can enable the timer from the quick menu pause mode after calibration.
  • Calibration Factor: Set the calibration factor manually if you know the factor that gives you the exact distance.

If you are connecting a 3rd party power sensor, make sure your watch and sensor have the latest software. If you have two power transmitters, you will need to connect the transmitters one at a time. After connecting the first transmitter, you can immediately connect the second one. Look at the device ID on the back of the transmitter to make sure you have found the correct transmitters from the list.

  1. In the watch menu, go to General settings > Pair and sync > Connect a sensor or other device and press OK.
  2. The clock starts searching for the sensor. Cadence sensor : Rotate the crank several times to activate the sensor. A flashing red sensor light means it is ready for use. Speed ​​sensor : Turn the wheel several times to activate the sensor. A flashing red sensor light means it is ready for use. Third party power sensor : Turn cranks to turn transmitters on.
  3. Once the sensor has been found, the display will show the device ID. Click OK to start connecting.
  4. When the connection is completed, you will see the message: Pairing completed.

Bicycle settings

  1. Displayed Sensor connected to:. Select Bike 1, Bike 2 or Bike 3. Confirm with OK.
  2. Set wheel circumference is displayed if you have connected a speed sensor or a power sensor that measures speed. Set the size and click OK.
  3. Connecting rod length: Set the connecting rod length in millimeters. The setting is only displayed if you have paired the power sensor.

Wheel Circumference Measurement

Accurate wheel circumference data is essential to get accurate information about your ride. There are two ways to determine the wheel circumference of your bike:

Method 1

  • For the most accurate result, measure the wheels by hand.
  • Using the valve, determine the point where the wheel touches the ground. Draw a line on the ground to mark this point. Drive the bike forward on level ground so that the wheel makes a full circle. The tire must be perpendicular to the ground. When the valve is at the starting point, draw another line near it to mark a full turn. Measure the distance between the two lines.
  • Subtract 4 mm from this distance to compensate for your pressure on the bike to get the circumference of the wheel.

Method 2

Locate the marking on the wheel indicating the wheel diameter in inches or ETRTO units. Use the table to get the value in millimeters (right).
