cool laptop with a couple of innovations and overpaying for design

    Author: Onlíner Catalog Team

Crazy exchange rates have driven prices up. Many products are scary to look at after only a week. The laptop in question, like all others, has increased in price, but in relation to the characteristics and functions, it can still be added to the shopping list. The Acer Swift 3 is a very compact and very light laptop with good performance for its category and low temperatures.

Demand for small laptops has grown a lot lately. There are many more such devices based on Windows, and the price of them has been declining for some time. These laptops are rightly called typewriters, but it all depends on the tasks and budget. However, the combination of compactness and performance in any case raises the price by several times.

    “Explain your smallness!”

Gray painted metal housing with embossed SWIFT lettering on the hinge below the screen. The screen itself is firmly attached to the case and does not shake at the slightest wiggle of the laptop, making it suitable for work on trips. The matte cover does not collect fingerprints at all, but flexes a little when pressed. With one hand, the laptop does not open at all.

The Swift 3’s screen has thin bezels on three sides, like many laptops today. The lower part is wider with a glossy logo and an unnecessary “Full HD 1080” sticker. It can be peeled off – and it will become calmer.

One of the key and probably the most expensive features is the thin (16 mm) and light body (1100 g). You don’t feel it in your hands or in your backpack at all. They are comfortable to use in any poses and spaces. This is very cool!

Acer has removed a few connectors, but there are more of them than in the MacBook Air. In addition to HDMI and audio output, 2 USB and 1 USB-C with Thunderbolt 3 support are available for peripherals. It is important to note here that this is the cheapest laptop with this interface. This makes it easy for Swift 3 to support an external display with a single USB-C cable that provides both power and video. Multi-display setups can be created, which can come in handy when working remotely in the current social environment.

There are also disadvantages: the laptop lacks a card reader, which is vital, for example, for photographers, and an Ethernet port. Both problems can be solved with the help of an appropriate docking station, but these are already crutches. Acer Swift 3 received the latest WiFi 6 module (Intel AX201). To test it, you need to have compatible devices, which, unfortunately, were not at hand at the time of this writing. But the potential is good, given that this new standard will come to many routers and smartphones in the future.

    Cool screen and good hardware

It is popularly believed that for serious work with photography you need huge monitors with incredible color reproduction for the same incredible money. However, it all depends on the work being done. After all, even on modern smartphones, you can make a good photo correction. The Acer Swift 3 does the job just fine too. The laptop has a high-quality IPS-matrix (CMN N140HCE-EN2), however, with a small margin of brightness. The laptop is convenient to use, including in a dark room, where you need to reduce the degree of eye burning by the screen. But in bright sunlight it is difficult to see anything on the screen. The screen leans almost 180 degrees, which, coupled with excellent viewing angles, allows you to work with an emphasis on the steering wheel of the car. This is such an unexpected case that many can come in handy.

Contrary to expectations, Acer Swift 3 does not suffer from throttling, like many brothers in the same case and with similar hardware. The configuration chosen for the article is equipped with a Core i5-1035G1 processor, the first Intel processor made using a completely new process technology. The transition to a new platform gave support for high-speed RAM with a slight decrease in the maximum clock frequency.

Balancing between these components makes Swift 3 SF314-57 a good option for a large task pool. The laptop performed well in normal work scenarios as well. With an external display connected, he pulled a large Excel spreadsheet, 30+ tabs in Chrome, and batch processing RAW photos with filters and color correction in Photoshop. At maximum load, the processor averaged up to 71 degrees. At medium and minimum load, the heating was less than 43 degrees.

    Photo laptopmedia.com

You can’t upgrade anything other than the SSD and Wi-Fi module on a laptop. The Acer Swift 3 has a 256 GB NVMe drive from Hynix. True, there is no point in replacing it, in principle, because it is a good drive with high speeds. Unless you install a more capacious drive.

When it comes to games on integrated graphics, you always have to make a number of reservations and assumptions. Of course, you won’t be able to play comfortably in high definition. Even though the new Core i5’s “plug-in” has become noticeably better, it’s still only enough for retro games, multiplayer shooters, and cute indie games. In most titles, you have to play at minimum settings with FullHD resolution, which, in principle, allows you to squeeze out 55-60 fps in places, depending on the game.

Such a flawed keyboard is very upsetting in a laptop. It’s just nasty, like it was taken from the cheapest old laptop and put in a new one for 1 kilodollar. At the same time, the keys have a firm response and a short travel, which allows you to quickly get used to the small keyboard and type almost without typos. There is a two-level white backlight. The Home and End keys are inconveniently located, which forces you to regularly miss the arrows. The navigation buttons themselves are extremely small. Perhaps this is an individual problem.

An example of a high-end laptop for 2020

You enjoy working on this laptop. It seems like a small laptop, but you see a lot on the screen. Very thin bezels hold a lot of content. If your budget covers the cost of Acer Swift 3, then you will definitely not be disappointed. The laptop is definitely worth adding to your shopping list. At the same time, everything fundamentally rests on your use cases. Where is this price from? Many factors, you yourself understand everything. Obviously, the great screen and super lightweight metal body push the price tag up. Add to this the latest hardware, like the Ice Lake processor and Thunderbolt 3. And in terms of configuration, you can look at the model cheaper and not lose.
