Samsung explained that its Blu-ray players broke due to an incorrect XML file, and flashing the problem cannot be solved / Sudo Null IT News world cannot use their home electronic devices. Their equipment, after being turned on, goes into a cyclic reboot.

The manufacturer only acknowledged this problem in mid-July 2020 and asks all affected users to send or bring broken equipment for free repair to a service center, and the cost of sending will also be compensated. Samsung explained that such a breakdown arose due to an XML file previously sent over the network to all devices, which contained an error inside. It is because of it that thousands of the company’s devices began to go into a cyclic reboot after being turned on. In addition, due to the fact that devices fail at the beginning of the boot procedure, it is then that the file of the incorrect XML file is being processed, it is impossible to reset the device to the initial settings or reflash at home.

Thus, Samsung has created a serious problem for itself, which affects many Samsung home multimedia devices at once, and not just one model or line of equipment. The following devices were affected in the incident, according to user reports: Samsung HT-J4550/XU, BD-JM51, HT-J4200/4500/5530, BD J5100/5700/5900, BD-JM57C, HT-J5500W and other home theater models, stereo systems and Blu-ray players, including very old ones such as the BD-P1590. Most of these devices connect to the Internet via cable or wirelessly to display content from various online resources, as well as receive updates.

For some time, American and European users of affected devices have been trying to jointly understand the cause of their breakdown and find at least some solution. Russian users of Samsung home equipment also faced this problem. However, so far the only way to restore the device is to send it to the SC.

An engineering user named Gray told the Register about his investigation into this problem with failed Blu-ray players. According to his version, Samsung periodically checks all its devices over the network for compliance with the company’s current system policies. When the policies are updated, new XML files are uploaded to Samsung servers, which are transferred to user devices and stored there in flash memory. Moreover, the system software of Blu-ray players does not have priority to delete or ignore these files if they have errors.

It turned out that until June 18, 2020, all policy update checks were successful and without problems, since Samsung servers had correct XML files. Each device standardly accessed the network at the address “configprd.samsungcloudsolution.net/openapi/dict/logpolicyconfig” and received an XML file update if necessary, and this was done automatically without the user’s consent and is not part of the firmware update procedure, but disable this process the user cannot, and he does not know about it.

On June 18, 2020, the XML file for most devices was updated on Samsung servers in the late afternoon. But it contained an error (an empty list), due to which the devices could not correctly translate the necessary sequence of actions, hung up and rebooted.

In fact, the system software (bdpprog) of many Blu-ray players could not process this file with an error, and when trying to execute it, an invalid link was created in the internal memory of the device, following which led to the completion of the boot procedure and restarting the system, rebooting, shutting down from the network, attempts to return to the factory settings – this did not help in this case.

Later it turned out that fixing this global situation requires physical access to all broken devices and performing a certain process of low-level debugging of the components on the affected Blu-ray players, up to soldering wires to the device controllers to connect it to an external programmer.

It also turned out that Samsung specialists only figured out this situation on June 27, 2020 and replaced the XML file with the correct one, until that moment devices failed around the world as soon as they were connected to the network. Previously, some users suggested that this issue was related to expiring SSL certificates, but this turned out not to be the case.

Samsung did not name the exact number of broken home media devices due to this error and did not explain why the incorrect XML file was uploaded to the company’s servers without checking its contents.

The BD-P1600 plays all of today’s multimedia formats: Blu-ray, DVD, DivX, MP3, JPEG and more. And automatic firmware updates via the Internet keep the player always ready to play new standards – all you have to do is connect the BD-P1600 to your network via an Ethernet cable or a WiFi hotspot using the optional USB WiFi dongle.

But network functions are not limited to this. One of the main advantages of the new Samsung player is the ability to broadcast real-time data from a computer to a TV screen. This opens up a whole new level of comfort for those users whose media library is not stored on optical media, but on a computer hard drive. HD videos, DivX movies, music, photos can all be easily streamed to the big screen with or without a wired WiFi spot at home. The BD-P1600 is the first device to offer much-loved networking features at such an attractive price.

In addition to a home computer, any USB device can become a data source: a camcorder, digital camera, external hard drive – they can be directly connected to the player via USB ports, one of which is located on the front panel, which simplifies the connection of additional equipment.
