Not to be hyperbolic, but this alarm clock changed my life. It reached deep into my soul and yanked out someone I didn’t even know I had inside: a morning person. Not the type of morning person who immediately laces up their sneakers and hits the pavement, but the type who gets up before the sun to claim a little of the day for themselves. The magical span of time between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. is completely and utterly mine (and maybe my cat’s). Most of that I owe to the Philips SmartSleep Wake-Up Light HF3520 sunrise alarm clock.
Our pick
It’s beauty, it’s grace, it’ll wake you up without screaming in your face. In lieu of a traditional alarm, a sunrise alarm clock helps you gently greet the day by simulating the rising sun, starting with a soft glow that slowly blooms into a bright light. Some sunrise clocks use a white light that can be a bit of a shock to the system, but the SmartSleep HF3520 starts with a red-tinted color that’s much less jarring. Over the course of 30 minutes, that hue gradually grows into a warmer yellow and then finally a bright white light. Overall, the experience is a much more satisfying and humane journey into the waking world.
In addition to the sunrise feature, this Philips alarm clock is equipped with a myriad of alarm tones that trigger after the light. It includes five different sounds ranging from birds to piano music, plus more meditative tones. All of the sounds are reasonably pleasant, but if I’m being honest, the light is effective enough on its own for me. In fact, I’m so unfamiliar with the alarm tones that I once forgot to turn off the secondary alarm and let it play out for about an hour—all the while wondering why there were so many birds outside. (I said I was a morning person—not a high-functioning morning person.)
The SmartSleep HF3520 is simple to use. You can control every function on the clock by touching the face or pressing the small arrangement of buttons along the top and sides. Although hitting snooze on your alarm can be a recipe for disaster (I won’t even check the time if I wake up in the middle of the night), you can trigger it by merely touching the face of the clock. The SmartSleep HF3520 also has a radio (though, admittedly, I have never used it), and our reviewer said it sounded just as good as that of our upgrade pick and can even work as one of the alarm tones.
Besides tools to help you wake up, the SmartSleep HF3520 is equipped to guide you to sleep, as well. It has a sunset function that works in the exact reverse of the sunrise, slowly dimming over 30 minutes until it’s totally extinguished. Whether you’re reading or simply lying in bed, it’s a nice way to ease yourself into sleep versus just shutting off the lights and calling it a night.
The SmartSleep HF3520 isn’t without flaws. As we mention in our guide to sunrise alarm clocks, its ovular, oblong shape is a little bulky and takes up quite a bit of nightstand real estate. It also lacks smart features and ports to charge your phone—though depending on how you feel about keeping your bedroom tech-free, that may be more of a feature than a flaw. Another point to consider is how heavily you sleep. I have a handful of friends who sleep like the dead. It’s an admirable quality, and they will survive the winter, but they said the clock’s gentle sunrise couldn’t get the job done. Not everyone is equipped to be gently roused from dreamland—some folks need to be ripped from sleep with the speed and volume of a freight train barreling down the tracks.
I can’t recommend this clock enough if you’re looking to make small, measurable changes to both your morning and nighttime routines. It’s semi-affordable (as far as sunrise alarm clocks go), pretty intuitive to use, and a kind departure from the traditional alarm clocks of yesteryear. It just might be the missing ingredient you’ve been looking for—it certainly was for me.

Domestic and foreign models differ in build quality, appearance, price. You can buy a radio alarm clock in electronics stores or large shopping centers. Of course, it is no secret that foreign analogues are somewhat more expensive than Russian equipment, but they have convenient functions. From the numerous assortment, only 7 nominees were selected, who deserved the title of the best. Consider the manufacturers of these devices:
- Sangean is a company founded in Taiwan in 1974. It stands out for its retro design, which is displayed in every product.
- Hyundai is a famous brand from South Korea. Produces cars, but in 2004 he successfully began to develop in the field of sales of electronic goods.
- Ritmix is a domestic brand that produces electronic products. The priority is low prices and a wide selection of equipment.
- Harper is another Taiwanese company focusing on R&D. Engaged in the creation of headphones, acoustic systems, clock radios, etc.
- Telefunken – the oldest brand from Germany, founded in 1903. Produces television and radio equipment.
- Sony is a Japanese popular holding. Founded in 1946, it specializes in the production of professional electronics, game consoles and other high-tech products.
- Beurer is a trademark from Germany and Hungary. The leader among the creators of innovative technology, develops modern electrical equipment.
Radio alarm rating
Manufacturers offer only the best radio alarm clocks, tailored to the needs of users. The rating was compiled on the basis of consumer opinion, expert opinion, testing. Studied the price segment, technical characteristics, the life of each alarm clock and the following factors:
- Build quality;
- Functionality;
- Volume;
- Appearance;
- Security;
- Dimensions;
- Power supply.
The ease of control of the devices, their stability, and the brightness of the display were also considered. Users rated the design features as well as the availability of the clock radio in stores.
Best radio alarm clocks
From several nominees, only seven devices were selected, which belong to the category of the best. Each of them has its advantages and disadvantages, there are also differences among the options and appearance. The radio alarm clock does not consume a lot of electricity and is unpretentious in use. Each instance, its features and capabilities are considered in detail.
Sangean WR-2
A successful combination of retro design and wide functionality in a small box. This clock radio has a small LCD display that clearly shows the time, radio on and preset frequencies. The case made of natural wood is not very susceptible to scratches and minor mechanical damage. The device is controlled through the remote control or buttons located on the front panel. Users in Sangen most of all like surround and clear sound.
Advantages
- FM/CB reception;
- Has a headphone jack;
- Digital frequency tuning;
- Neat assembly;
- Screen brightness adjustable.
Drawbacks
- Does not remember radio stations;
- No USB connector.
The weight of the radio alarm clock, despite its modest dimensions, is quite large – about 2.6 kg. Such a model is inconvenient to take on the road, but it will stand steadily and reliably on surfaces.
Hyundai H-RCL220
In this device, buyers highlight the sound among the main advantages. At any volume, it does not wheeze, there are basses, low frequencies, and thanks to accurate, digital parameters, the FM radio works without interference. The large display brightly displays information about the time, signal and settings of the radio alarm clock. Operation is simple, the clock radio remembers preset radio stations, so customers do not have to manually adjust the frequency range.
Advantages
- Mains/Battery powered;
- Illuminated;
- Compact housing;
- Supports up to 20 tuner presets;
- 1 year manufacturer’s warranty.
Drawbacks
- There are gaps in the case where dust can get trapped;
- Not protected from scratches and abrasions.
Unfortunately, the Chinese assembly reduces the rating of this alarm clock radio, but users still choose Hyundai for its low price and good technical capabilities.
Ritmix RRC-616
A small device will look good in the interior – the white color of the body goes well with any design. Large numbers are highlighted with a green backlight that can be adjusted. The radio catches up to 10 standard radio stations, the device is powered from the mains or batteries. Buyers like the convenient operation and the location of the buttons, they are clearly pressed without jamming. Rhythmix has a fairly light weight, less than 200 grams, which indicates not only the compactness of the device, but also its fragility.
Advantages
- Sleep timer available;
- Loud sound;
- Numbers height 15 cm;
- Signal repeat;
- Batteries are only used to store time/alarm settings.
Drawbacks
- Poor reception of radio stations;
- Reception of FM band only.
It is noted that users are advised to buy a Ritmix radio alarm clock only to view the exact time – it catches the radio signal weakly, with interruptions and noise.
Harper HCLK-2041
Reviews of the radio alarm clock Harper are flattering, buyers say that it conquers with a large and bright dial. Time is clearly visible at night, and a loud alarm clock will not let you oversleep, waking you up exactly on time. The watch has a simple design and compact size. Due to its small dimensions, the device is convenient to take with you on the road, as a radio. Also, you can set the receiver and built-in melodies to the alarm signal by adjusting the required volume. The function of searching for radio stations in FM/AM frequencies has been automated.
Advantages
- Two alarms;
- Sound power 0.
5 W;
- Quality build;
- Original design;
- Low price.
Drawbacks
- Rear speaker;
- The buttons are too close to each other.
There is a Russified instruction in the kit, but users note complicated controls – it’s not easy to figure out how to apply the settings.
Telefunken TF-1582UB
Modern design and advanced controls make Telefunken one of the leaders in the ranking. It can set up to 50 user settings, receives VHF and FM waves, displaying information on a clear LED display. Supports USB / SD media, which allows you to set the alarm signal not only radio melodies or built-in sounds. Buyers note the convenience of touch control, which is carried out through a remote control or panel located on the case. Stylish appearance will favorably emphasize any interior, the watch also has 2 speakers, with a total power of 6 watts.
Advantages
- Plays MP3;
- Snooze alarm;
- bluetooth support;
- Calendar;
- Line input.
Drawbacks
- High price;
- Switching off resets settings.
The memory option, unfortunately, does not remember the set parameters and when completely disabled, all settings are reset. However, the Telefunken radio alarm clock can be connected to an external battery, taking it on the road.
Sony ICF-C1T
Due to the unusual design, it is difficult to imagine that this model belongs to radio alarm clocks – it looks more like a small cube. It looks nice, aesthetically pleasing, buyers positively note the simplicity of Sony’s design solution. Receives FM/MW waves, runs on small batteries and mains. It has a good build quality, which is a manufacturer’s priority in all electronics. The presence of backlighting and a bright dial are also considered by buyers as advantages. The device does not respond to mobile phones, the signal reception quality is good, the speaker does not wheeze.
Advantages
- Adjustable display brightness;
- Sleep timer;
- Settings are not reset when turned off;
- Light weight;
- Pleasant body material.
Drawbacks
- Quiet;
- Small numbers.
With modest dimensions, you can’t count on sound power. Still, buyers consider the model to be the best, advising everyone who cares about style and quality to buy a Sony radio alarm clock.
Beurer WL30
This device can be used as a night light, built-in LEDs perfectly illuminate a dark room. Beurer wakes up also outside the box, it gradually increases the sound and increases the brightness of the lighting, which in turn is very popular with users. You can also set an unusual alarm signal: there are birds singing, frogs croaking, rain and other sounds of nature. The device also helps you fall asleep – you can set a soothing melody, and the brightness of the light will gradually decrease. Management is easy to understand, everything is intuitive.
Advantages
- Stylish;
- Loud;
- Three levels of screen brightness;
- Switching display colors;
- Case resistant to damage;
- Receiving radio signal clearly.
Drawbacks
- Not battery operated;
- Small numbers.
For those who set the alarm clock close to the bed, small numbers will not be a disadvantage, their glow can be seen from 2-3 meters away. In general, this is the best model on the market, thanks to its good assembly and functionality.
What is the best radio alarm clock to buy
The choice of radio alarm clocks on the market is wide, manufacturers are supplementing them with the latest features, creating unusual designs and expanding settings to attract customers. When buying equipment, you need to take into account the price, the differences between each model, its purpose and the availability of main options. Considering the feedback from users and the results of testing equipment, we advise you to select it according to the following parameters:
- Who needs modern functionality, flexible settings and good sound, you can take a Telefunken radio alarm clock, it meets all standards;
- If design is important, good sound quality and signal reception, then you can pay attention to Sony – it fits these parameters better;
- Lovers of everything unusual, interesting and original will suit the Beurer WL30 – this device is multifunctional and reliable.
It is recommended that you check the manufacturer’s warranty and the working condition of the electronics directly in the store. Which radio alarm clock to choose is up to users to decide, the rating is compiled as a recommendation for choice.

Excellent alarm clock with built-in digital FM radio receiver. 10 memory locations for your favorite radio stations. Possibility to select an alarm signal – a buzzer or one of the stored radio stations. Set the radio off time. You can turn on the radio and fall asleep to your favorite music.
After the set time, the radio will turn itself off. Shutdown period from 15 minutes to 1.5 hours. The numbers on the screen are bright green. If you like to sleep in the dark, the screen can be turned off. Then the time is displayed for 15 seconds when any button is pressed. It is possible to turn on the projection of time on the ceiling or wall. The projection numbers are red, but not very bright, they do not interfere with sleep. Good product. I recommend.
