who he is in detail, years of life, portrait, the most famous paintings of the artist, periods and features of the painter’s work. John Trumbull’s contribution to the development of the historical genre in American visual arts
- Biography of John Trumbull
- The most famous paintings of John Trumbull
John Trumbull (John Trumbull; June 6, 1756 – November 10, 1843) – the famous American artist of the XVIII – XIX centuries, an outstanding master of historical and portrait genres. John Trumbull was an ardent supporter of the development of classical traditions in painting, and his work was highly appreciated by his contemporaries. Most of the master’s paintings are now kept in US museums, and four of his best works adorn the rotunda of the Capitol in Washington. The biography of the artist is full of interesting events, he lived a long life and left hundreds of unique works to his descendants.
John Trumbull. Painting “Self-portrait”, 1802
John Trumbull was an active participant in the War of Independence of the United States and painted a number of paintings dedicated to this most important historical event. In recognition of the merits of the master, his contemporaries often called him the “Artist of the Revolution”, and prominent political figures in America willingly ordered ceremonial portraits from the painter.
John Trumbull. The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill, June 17, 1775, 1786
Biography of John Trumbull
John Trumbull was born on June 6, 1756 in the small town of Lebanon, Connecticut, in the family of the famous military leader and politician Jonathan Trumbull Sr. The father of the future artist was a very extraordinary person, he served as governor of the state for many years, had a doctorate in law and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. John was the youngest, the sixth child in the family, and only he dreamed of becoming an artist from an early age, and his three older brothers chose a military career.
John Trumbull. Painting “The Capture of the Hessians at Trenton, December 26, 1776”, 1787
While still in elementary school, young Trumbull lost an eye in an accident. Despite this unpleasant incident, he managed to enter college at Harvard University and graduated in 1775. But John’s further plans for a peaceful life were suddenly disrupted by the outbreak of the US War of Independence, in the initial stage of which the young man took an active part. Due to his disability, he was not taken to the active army, but Trumbull’s abilities were useful in preparing the defense of Boston, when his carefully drawn military engineering plan helped the revolutionaries to keep an important city.
John Trumbull. The painting “Sally made by the garrison of Gibraltar”, 1789
After the Battle of Bunker Hill at the end of June 1775, the 19-year-old youth was appointed aide-de-camp to George Washington, and a year later he took a similar position at the headquarters of General Horatio Gates. And yet, in 1777, Trumbull had to leave military service due to vision problems, and he was finally able to return to civilian life.
John Trumbull. Painting “George Clinton”, 1791
Lack of professional academic education was a serious obstacle to a successful career as an artist. Therefore, John willingly enlisted the help of Benjamin Franklin, who recommended to his friend Benjamin West that he take the promising young man as his apprentice. In the spring of 1780, Trumbull left for London, where West had long lived. Under the guidance of an experienced mentor, he began to paint miniature portraits and paintings of the historical genre, but was suddenly arrested on charges of spying for the American colonists and spent six months in prison.
John Trumbull. Painting “Alexander Hamilton”, 1792
Fortunately, the timely intervention of influential patrons helped the artist avoid a harsh sentence. Six months later, the British authorities released him, and Trumbull immediately returned to the United States. On the advice of his older brother David, he got a job in the US Army Supply Department and served in it for several years.
John Trumbull. General George Washington in Trenton, 1792
In 1784, the British Empire officially recognized the independence of the United States of America, so John was free to return to London to continue his studies with Benjamin West. Trumbull again departed for Europe and over the next two years worked hard in the studio of his mentor, comprehending the secrets of the profession of a painter. Then the artist spent several months in Paris, where he painted a number of portrait miniatures, and at the end of 1876 he returned to the United States.
John Trumbull. Painting “Lady in White”, 1805
After a trip to Europe, the attitude towards John Trumbull at home has changed dramatically. He became a very popular and authoritative master of painting, so the US Congress ordered the artist four large-scale paintings of the historical genre for the central rotunda of the Capitol. In addition, Trumbull was a sought-after portrait painter and immortalized on canvas for posterity the images of many prominent political figures in America, including several presidents:
- George Washington;
- John Adams;
- Alexander Hamilton.
John Trumbull. Painting “Richard Varik”, 1805
Despite the general recognition, painting did not bring a lot of income to the artist, so John Trumbull combined painting with public service for many years. He served on the Foreign Affairs Commission, and for a long time was the secretary of one of the founding fathers of the United States, John Jay.
John Trumbull. Painting “Declaration of Independence”, 1817-1819
In 1816, the already middle-aged painter was appointed president of the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York and held this position for the next 20 years. He was an ardent adherent of the ideas of classicism in painting and fought desperately with innovative views, but not very successfully. In 1825, most of the students and teachers left the university and founded the National Academy of Design, which was a serious blow to 69year director.
John Trumbull. The painting “The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis”, 1819-1820
Shortly before his death, the painter published his detailed biography, but by that time the public had already ceased to be interested in his work. And on November 10, 1843, at the age of 87, John Trumbull died in New York, where he was buried.
John Trumbull. The painting “The Surrender of General Burgoyne”, 1821
The most famous paintings of John Trumbull
Among the large number of portraits and works of the historical genre, created by the artist, there are many excellent works. And yet, the most famous paintings of John Trumbull are rightfully considered:
- “Declaration of Independence” (1817-1819) – the first of four commissioned by the US Congress to decorate the interior of the Capitol building. A miniature reproduction of this painting is featured on the back of the $2 bill.
- The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis (1819-1820) is a masterpiece that captures the turning point of the Revolutionary War. After the second Battle of Saratoga, which ended with the surrender of the British troops, France entered the war on the side of the colonists, which significantly changed the balance of power of the warring parties.
- The Surrender of General Burgoyne (1821) is a work celebrating the last American victory in the Revolutionary War. In the center of the picture, General Benjamin Lincoln is depicted on a white horse, ready to accept personal weapons from the hands of the British commander as a sign of the enemy’s surrender.
- “General George Washington Resigns” (1824) – a work that vividly describes the exciting moment of the voluntary relinquishment of the supreme power of the first US president.
This painting has been considered an outstanding artistic symbol of the triumph of democracy for many years.
John Trumbull. General George Washington Resigns, 1824
John Trumbull left a bright mark on the history of American painting and will forever remain in the memory of posterity. And connoisseurs of art can see his best masterpieces not only in museums, but also on dollar bills, as well as in the US Capitol building.

Because of what the stock exchanges “fall” / Sudo Null IT News
The New York Times has published an interesting timeline, which marks the dates of major failures in American stock exchanges since the 60s of the last century. Sometimes the causes of failures were quite original. Read more about what can “drop” the exchange in our today’s material.
Stock computer stopped due to human error, 1967
According to the media, “The New York Stock Exchange has temporarily reverted to the proven manual method of recording transaction information” because an operator error on the IBM 7010 led to incorrect display of information in the system – some transactions were skipped, some were “doubled”. As a result, “specially trained” female typists of the exchange (there were 24 of them in total) entered the business, who began to record information manually – this made it possible to quickly resume trading.
Newspaper crash report
Lost squirrel turned off Nasdaq, 1987
On December 9, 1987, the Nasdaq crashed, causing the National Association of Securities Dealers’ quote service to be down for a full 82 minutes. According to representatives of the exchange, the emergency situation led to the fact that more than 20 million different shares ceased to participate in the auction.
The main computer center was located in a building in Trumbull, Connecticut, and was shut down by a sudden power failure. As a result, the exchange’s mainframes were shut down and the building’s electrical network was damaged, preventing backup generators from starting automatically.
The Nasdaq crash affected other exchanges as traders were forced to temporarily switch to making transactions by phone, this method was used before the widespread use of electronic trading systems.
The cause of the failure was a stray squirrel that gnawed through the wiring – this was the last thing she did in her life. The animal’s body was discovered by United Illuminating electricians while they were working to restore power.
Trading system bugs and… squirrels are dropping the Nasdaq again, 1994 year
Due to a series of failures in 1994, traders massively began to express their dissatisfaction with the quality of the Nasdaq exchange system. Various bugs in the trading system were first cited as the reasons for trading stops, but one of the failures, which lasted 34 minutes, was again caused by a squirrel, which again penetrated the computer center in Trumbull.
After that, the New York Times published an article entitled “Bugs and proteins destroy the Nasdaq’s image”, and traders actively complained about the situation, which even forced the US Congressional Securities and Trade Supervisory Committee to order a reliability review of the second largest US exchange.
Switch failure stopped trading on the New York Stock Exchange, 1998
On October 26, 1998, the New York Stock Exchange stopped trading for almost an hour due to an infrastructure failure that resulted in incorrect routing of trading information. Representatives of the exchange stated that the error was caused by incorrect operation of a group of switches that forward orders from brokers and traders to the exchange’s trading system.
The failure also resulted in the suspension of trading on other US exchanges, but a big panic was avoided due to the fact that the total volume of trading that day was low.
Switching to decimal prices delayed due to incorrect operation of Nasdaq system, 2000
At the turn of the century, the American stock market was undergoing major changes, one of the most notable being the transition to decimalization, with a change in the minimum tick size from $1/16 ($0.0625) to $0.01 per share. This made it possible to reduce the minimum difference between the purchase and sale prices, leveling the trading advantage of market makers – as a result, the market liquidity increased.
However, as the media found out, in 2000, the Nasdaq exchange was unable to launch trading on the new system within the previously announced period due to the fact that its SelectNet trading system starts to work incorrectly with large trading volumes, which can lead to delays in execution orders and even a complete stop of trading.
Nasdaq hacked, 2001
In 2001, it became known that unknown hackers managed to penetrate one of the Nasdaq systems, designed to provide services for corporations. This system was not connected to the trading core of the exchange, so the attackers did not gain access to information about transactions, but financial market participants were concerned about the degree of protection of their data.
New exchange BATS stopped trading its own shares due to failure, 2012
Founded in 2005, the BATS stock exchange suspended trading on its platform in March 2012 due to a series of computer problems. As a result, the company even withdrew its initial public offering (IPO), which canceled the applications for the purchase of its shares, and those traders who had already bought them were temporarily unable to sell this asset.

Facebook’s IPO broke the Nasdaq system, 2012
On the day of the Facebook IPO, the start of trading on Nasdaq was delayed by 3 hours, and after the start of trading, the system continued to work incorrectly for some time, in particular, it lost notifications about the execution of transactions. Representatives of the exchange acknowledged that the problems were associated with the IPO, but said that malfunctions in the trading floor did not affect the value of the shares.
Facebook stock ended its first day of trading at $38.23 per share at an opening price of $38, a result that upset many investors.
Series of glitches and hack hit Nasdaq reputation, 2013
In 2013, Nasdaq again experienced technical problems, which even led to a complete halt in trading for several hours. In addition, the media learned that the computer system of the exchange was hacked by hackers who penetrated it for two years without being noticed.
All this has led to the fact that talk about the technological backlog of Nasdaq (where the shares of IT companies are traditionally traded) from competing sites like BATS and Direct Edge.
An error in the trading system NYSE stopped trading for 3.5 hours, 2015
The most recent failure happened quite recently – on July 8, 2015, when an error in the trading system of the New York Stock Exchange led to a trading halt for 3.5 hours. According to White House spokesman Josh Earnest, President Barack Obama was informed of the halt in trading. Members of the State Securities and Stock Market Commission also said they are closely monitoring the situation.
On the same day, United Airlines reported serious technical problems (flights to the US were suspended for several hours), and The Wall Street Journal’s website was down for several hours.
Failures periodically occur not only on American exchanges, but also on trading floors in other countries, for example, on the Moscow Exchange.
