Best Buy is pulling the plug on its Mall of America store.
The Richfield-based retailer, whose headquarters are just 4 miles away from the megamall, told store employees Thursday night that the company will not to renew its lease. Best Buy has stores nearby in Richfield and Eagan.
The last day of business at the Mall of America store will be Aug. 4, the company said Friday, adding that it will work to transfer store employees who are interested to nearby stores.
“Our Mall of America store has been a great way to showcase our brand,” Best Buy spokesman Jeff Shelman said. “But, as we have said, we look at every lease that comes up for renewal and we consider a number of factors in making the decision, including, in this case, the fact that we have two other stores within 7 miles of the mall.”
In a statement, the Mall of America said it has appreciated its partnership with Best Buy over the last decade. “Given the evolution of the market and our customer demands, we have instead decided to pursue a new first-to-market innovative concept for our guests,” the mall said.
The 46,000-square-foot Best Buy store on the mall’s third floor went into a space formerly occupied by Sports Authority. When the store opened in 2008, Magic Johnson was on hand to help cut the ribbon.
While Best Buy has locations at other malls, this one is unusual in that it does not have its own exterior entrance.
In addition, many of the mall’s shoppers are tourists from out of town who aren’t likely to be as interested in buying TVs or computers as taking advantage of Minnesota’s tax-free shopping on clothing and shoes.
Given the mall’s demographics, Best Buy’s Mall of America store also does not sell items like appliances, which have become a significant source of revenue for the retailer.
As it looks to remain competitive in the e-commerce age, Best Buy has been selectively closing underperforming big-box stores as leases come up for renewal. Last year, it closed 18 large-format stores, including locations in Blaine and Inver Grove Heights.
At the same time, it is opening its first new big-box store in seven years this fall near Salt Lake City.
It’s also in the process of winding down about 250 unprofitable small-format mobile phone stores, most of which were located in shopping malls.
Best Buy has a little over 1,000 big-box stores in the U.S., including 13 in the Twin Cities region.

Excellent mall, quite noisy, but in general everything is organic and competent. The food court is not bad – there is a McDag with a chipotle, there is a shrimp and a burger. There are many places for kids. It’s worth going, especially since for ~ 3 bucks from MSP ✈️ you can go back and forth.

The cent is so big that it is impossible to get around in one day. And most importantly, all ages of people can relax in the center. You feel comfortable and calm. Impressive.

In terms of area, this shopping center is one of the two largest in the United States. A significant part of it is occupied by an all-weather amusement park, so people like me who are not interested in shopping also have something to have fun ) The set itself is foody and the shops are quite average.
An additional plus of this place: it is convenient to get to it by public transport – a tram runs from the airport and the center of Minneapolis.

A shopaholic’s paradise is located between Minneapolis and the international airport. It is convenient to get on a high-speed tram and you can spend a lot of time without leaving the mall: there you will be fed, watered, and dressed, etc. Just pay.

Many shops, attractions, an aquarium. You can play all day long. But in Moscow today there are centers and more (in terms of the number of stores).

Wide range…
May 2015 • With friends
MOA is indeed a huge area and volume. Indeed, there are a lot of visitors here. But you can’t count on interesting shopping. Most of the mall is occupied by an all-weather amusement park. And shops occupy about 1/3 of the area. And for the most part, these are not branded outlets.
To be fair, I didn’t leave without shopping! Still, it’s captivating. In addition, he “flew” on an F-15 fighter simulator – he shot down several MiGs. I witnessed a huge raging crowd-line (some, apparently well-known, group was signing autographs). I had a bite at the chain cafe Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

America’s largest shopping mall
July 2015 • With friends
If you write “Minneapolis” in a search engine, almost every article you will see information about the largest shopping center in America. Maybe if I had been there 10 years ago, it would have amazed me, but not today.
Huge area with shops, restaurants, parking, attractions and entertainment. You can go to Barbie World, CSI, Star Wars, Lego World and Aquarium, as well as just ride the rides.
Shops are the same as everywhere else.
There is a shuttle from the airport.

Not bad to pass the time between flights
June 2014 • For two
We had about 10 hours between flights at Minneapolis airport and decided to go shopping at the Mall of America, where friends advised us to go. The alternative of sitting in the terminal was not inspiring. Shopping is a better idea. To be honest, despite the size and entertainment center with attractions, the mall did not impress. Shopping is mediocre. The usual set of Macyses, Nordstrom and Sears, plus little-known European ear brands, and the lack of high fashion in principle in the center. The kids will be great there. A huge Lego center and a modest oceanarium. In general, if you have nothing to do, then OK, but under other circumstances I would not go there.

Huge mall
2014 • Business
It is said to be the largest mall in the US. Inside it is an amusement park. Lots of shops. There are already 2 departments of Victoria’s Secret. There is my favorite Marshalls. It is located not far from the international airport, a tram runs from the airport to the mall, it is very convenient and not expensive.

America’s Largest Mall
July 2013 • With Friends
the largest mall in the US – Mall of America! This complex is intended not only for “professional buyers”, but literally for everyone! There are a lot of shops, restaurants and all kinds of eateries, there is an aquarium with marine life swimming in it (there are even sharks !!!). And there is something that struck me – in the middle of this huge complex inside the amusement park! You begin to realize the global nature of this complex when you go to a giant parking lot in search of your car! Tens of thousands of parking spaces occupied by cars from all over America. Many people specifically dedicate their weekends to a trip to the mall! Better to see once than hear a hundred times! If you are in the USA, be sure to come to the Mall of America! It will give you true indescribable pleasure! And of course shopping!

An ordinary aquarium with standard entertainment, like touching some fish and a tunnel “under water”.
The namesake of this aquarium in London and competitor in Atlanta (Georgia Aquarium) is definitely more interesting.

My friend and I had such a great time at Sea Life. You have the option to buy a “behind the scenes” tour where you can learn about, and take a closer look at, some marine animals. Phil, our guide made the stay very enjoyable for the whole group. He was amazing at his job! It was truly an experience we will never forget and would highly recommend.

Good exhibitions; Expensive for the size.
Aug. 2017 • Family vacation
The exhibitions they have are very good. The shark tunnel was very cool. However, for over $20 per person (with a discount), it was very small. I was very surprised to just end up less than an hour in from the hotel. I didn’t search all day for the area so I wasn’t something it was on the smaller side. However, given the size, I do think they are overpriced for what they offer. My 3 year old loved the exhibits. There were divers in the water once and they all gave her hand claps, she loved it. I am

Swim with sharks!
July 2017 • Family vacation
Took the grandchildren – ages 1 – 6 to see the aquarium. We all enjoyed it very much. You can see at your own pace. You can touch and feel some of the exhibitions. Going through the shark tunnel and having water and fish above you was quite an experience. Took about 1.5 hours but again, you can go as fast or as slow as you want.

Simply Good
Aug. 2017 • With friends
It’s been many years since I’ve been to this aquarium so on Sunday July 30, 2017, I decided to check it out with a few friends. We were due in Minneapolis for concerts going on there and checked out the mall on the way back. We paid on 24.99 to get into the aquarium. I really liked the variety of animals we saw but it took us half an hour to walk through everything. I don’t think the aquarium was worth the price we paid for it. The three of us were disappointed to say the least. I probably won’t be back.

Good clean aquarium and a selection of fish. The main attraction as the aquariums goes, but it’s a good family event. The price point is at the top of the quality level, but in a big mall so not unexpected. Plan around 90 minutes to allow for crowds.
