Everything Pokémon Yellow Changed And Added On Virtual Console

By
Jonathan Golden

Pokémon Yellow’s original Game Boy version and Virtual Console 3DS version are similar, but have their differences. Here’s everything that changed.

The original and virtual console versions of Pokémon Yellow are very similar, but there are a few minor differences between them. With Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet on the horizon, revisiting a popular game from the first generation is a good way to get back into the Pokémon series, and Yellow is arguably the most interesting of the bunch. Yellow came after Pokémon Red and Blue and contains a slightly different collection of Pokémon; it also has dialogue and characters from the anime and allows players to start with a Pikachu rather than one of the three traditional starters.

Pokémon Yellow was originally released for the Game Boy, but a virtual console version was later released on the 3DS. Most players will probably opt for the virtual console port for the sake of convenience, and it will certainly make trading easier. Trading with the Game Boy version requires a link cable, while the VC version allows players to trade with other people wirelessly. Multiplayer battles are also wireless on VC, so Yellow‘s social aspect is noticeably improved, with the Virtual Console menu replacing the Cable Club attendant’s dialogue.

Completing Pokémon Yellow‘s improved Gen 1 Pokédex on VC is a bit more doable, as Yellow can wirelessly battle and trade with other Generation One VC Pokémon games, and trade with Generation Two VC games using the Time Capsule as well. All first- and second-generation VC games are compatible with Poké Transporter, a 3DS app that allows players to transfer Pokémon to a Pokémon Bank, where they can be withdrawn into either Pokémon Home or a seventh-generation game. This change is far more significant than it sounds because it marks the first time Pokémon can be transferred from the first and second generation to the present; previously, the second generation of games was unable to pass Pokémon to the third and beyond.

The other changes are fairly minor. Major features like tracking down the hardest-to-find Pokémon remain the same. Some of the only animation-related changes apply to moves with bright flashing lights, which are toned down to better accommodate players with photo-sensitive epilepsy. These moves include Blizzard, Confusion, Hyper Beam, Psychic, and Thunderbolt. The other graphic change pertains to Jynx, which deservedly drew negative attention due to its offensive appearance. Jynx is now purple, and all of its move animations are changed to implement its new design, making Jynx the most colorful Pokémon in Pokémon Yellow.

Luckily, Yellow is not one of the most expensive classic Pokémon games, so the Game Boy version is somewhat reasonably priced. The Game Boy version of Yellow includes a surfing minigame called Pikachu’s Beach, but it requires a Pikachu with the move Surf, which can only be obtained using Pokémon Stadium. The VC version allows players to start Pikachu’s Beach as long as they have a Pikachu in their party at all, making the Easter egg far easier and as a result, a bit less satisfying. Game Boy Printer features are also disabled in VC for obvious reasons; the Game Boy version allows players to print a record of their Pokémon storage boxes, and when players complete the Pokédex, they gain a certificate. This feature was purely aesthetic but quite charming and creative, so its presence will be sorely missed.

This page explains how to trade from Pokémon Yellow to Pokémon Ultra Sun.

Virtual Console Only

If you have the Virtual Console version of Pokémon Yellow,
you can transfer pokémon from
it to Pokémon Bank. You cannot transfer pokémon from
the Game Boy cartridge version of Pokémon Yellow to
Pokémon Ultra Sun
.

What You Need

To send pokémon from Pokémon Yellow to Pokémon Ultra Sun,
you need to download Pokémon Bank from the Nintendo 3DS eShop, then open Pokémon Bank and go to the main menu, then tap “Download Poké Transporter”. If you downloaded Pokémon Ultra Sun from the eShop, be sure to download Pokémon Bank to the same 3DS that has the game on it.

Please make sure that
your cartridges are genuine Nintendo products!
Counterfeit games might
not be able to trade.
For more information, including contact information for reporting bootlegs, visit Nintendo’s anti-piracy web page.

In-Game Requirements

Before you can trade from Pokémon Yellow to Pokémon Ultra Sun:

  • In Pokémon Yellow, you need to get the Pokédex from Professor Oak in Pallet Town.
  • In Pokémon Ultra Sun, you need to have the Pokédex.

How to Trade

This is a ONE-WAY TRANSFER! Pokémon sent from Pokémon Yellow to
Pokémon Ultra Sun cannot be sent back to Pokémon Yellow!

Make sure that your Nintendo 3DS has wireless turned on and can connect to the
Internet.

Get your Pokémon Ready to Transfer

If your copy of Pokémon Yellow is on a cartridge, put the cartridge into your Nintendo 3DS.
Open the game, choose the
pokémon that you want to transfer, then move them to Box 1 in your PC Box.
If there are any pokémon in PC Box 1 that you do not want to transfer, move
them to a different box in your PC Box.
Save the game, then go back to the 3DS home screen.

Download/Update Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter

If you don’t have Pokémon Bank, go to Pokémon Bank in the eShop. You can use
the Nintendo 3DS camera and tap the QR code button to scan the following QR Code to go to the Pokémon
Bank page in the eShop.

Then open Pokémon Bank. If you are prompted for your
password, enter it
and sign in.

About Expired Pokémon Bank Passes

It is no longer possible to purchase a new Pokémon Bank Pass, because it is no longer possible to add funds to Nintendo 3DS. If your Pokémon Bank Pass has expired, choose No when prompted to purchase a new pass.

Pokémon Bank will become available at no cost on March 27, 2023. You can still move Pokémon from Pokémon Bank back into Pokémon Yellow without a valid pass, so you may wish to do this to ensure that they do not get deleted. You will be able to move them back into Pokémon Bank starting on March 27, 2023.

Use Pokémon Bank

If this is the first time that you have used Pokémon Bank, Brigette will
introduce herself. She explains that you can’t store held items in the
Pokémon Bank, so they will be sent back to the Bag if you store pokémon in the
Bank. But if the Bag is full, the item will disappear.

After Brigette finishes her explanation, a menu will appear.
If you don’t have Poké Transporter, Choose
“Download Poké Transporter”. There will be a message explaning what Poké
Transporter is. Choose Download. The game will ask if it is OK to go to the
eShop. Choose Yes. If you are prompted for your password, enter it and
sign in. Tap the “Tap Here to Download” button. Poké Transporter is free. Tap
Next, then tap Download. You can choose to Download Now or Download Later.

If you do have Poké Transporter but you need to update it, go to the eShop
and choose Menu at the top-left, then scroll down and choose Settings/Other,
then scroll down and choose Updates. If there is an update for Poké Transporter,
it will be listed on this screen.

Use Poké Transporter

Go to the home screen and
open Poké Transporter. If this is the first time that you have used it,
it will explain that if the pokémon in Pokémon Yellow are holding any items, those
items will go back to your bag in Pokémon Yellow.

After you have read all the messages, you will see the pokémon in Box 1
of your Pokémon Yellow game.
If you want to transfer ALL the pokémon from your
PC Box 1 in Pokémon Yellow to the Pokémon Bank, choose Yes. If there are some pokémon
that you do not want to transfer, you will need to open Pokémon Yellow and move
those pokémon from PC Box 1 to a different PC Box, then repeat this step.

Transfer Pokémon from Pokémon Bank to Pokémon Ultra Sun

Go to the home screen and close Poké Transporter. If your copy of Pokémon Ultra Sun
is on a cartridge, remove your copy of Pokémon Yellow from the Nintendo 3DS
cartridge slot and put your copy of Pokémon Ultra Sun into the Nintendo 3DS cartridge
slot.

Open Pokémon Bank. If you are prompted for your password, enter it
and sign in.
Choose “Use Pokémon Bank” in the Pokémon Bank menu. Use the
cursor to choose Pokémon Ultra Sun in the top screen, then choose “Use this game”.

If a message says that your Pokémon Link is full, you will be asked if you
still want to use Pokémon Bank. You won’t lose your gifts if you say Yes.
You can get your gifts by opening Pokémon Ultra Sun and
choosing Pokémon Link in the game select menu to receive your gifts from
Pokémon Bank.

Back in Pokémon Bank, after you select Pokémon Ultra Sun and choose “Use this Game”,
use the control pad or circle pad (the stylus cannot be used in Pokémon
Bank) to move the cursor to the first bank
in the top screen. Press left to go to the Transport Box. Then use the cursor
to move the pokémon from the Transport Box to your PC Box in the touch
screen. You can press START to switch between a red cursor, which shows you
several options when you select a pokémon with it; a blue cursor, which
picks up one pokémon at a time without showing any options; and a green cursor,
which allows you to select multiple pokémon at a time.

When you are done moving your pokémon to Pokémon Ultra Sun,
press the X button to save your changes and return to the title screen.

FAQ

*Can it be printed in other materials?

We recommend using PLA tested with our “Color Mixing Tester” included in this file. But you can try other materials, have fun!

*Is this for multicolor printers?

Yes, it is for use with multicolor printers only.

*How can 5 colors be used on a 4 color system (AMS)?

We use the natural translucency of colors to make them blend into each other in thin layers. We also use the “Pause” setting, which allows us to swap colors around.

With this technique we can increase the number of colors we can put on a print using just one AMS.

*Can I change the layer height?

We do not recommend changing the layer height, this model is specially designed for printing with a layer height of 0.2. We cannot guarantee good results with other heights.

*If I don’t have a multicolor printer, can I print it?

Unfortunately not, this print is only for use with printers with a multi-color system.

If you know how to modify G-CODES and have an idea how to solve this problem, please contact me at [email protected].

Please feel free to send a message if you want to ask anything if you are unsure before ordering.
