The newest TV on our list, Amazon’s Fire TV is ideal if you want a model for streaming and voice control. As the name suggests you get Fire TV built-in.
That means you get easy access to popular apps including Netflix, Prime Video, ITVX or Disney+ straight from the homepage, plus a quick tap of the Alexa Voice Remote lets you control it with your voice.
Even if we don’t love that the 2-series is limited to 720p resolution, it’s not very noticeable at this display size. At under £200, this is an affordable option, too.

Roku is one of the big names in streaming, and it recently partnered with the US brand RCA to bring out a range of affordable TVs powered by its own operating system.
This focuses on easy access to Freeview and app platforms including Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer and ITVX. We recommend it for anyone who needs a small TV for loads of streaming, but it’s our pick as the best value because the price starts at £139.99.
The compromise is with resolution. It’s limited to 720p (HD Ready) instead of a crisper 1080p (Full HD), but you’re unlikely to see a major difference.

Best 32-inch TV for the basics
Hisense A4EGT
£172 at Amazon
Hisense has built up a reputation for making budget-friendly TVs that perform well, and its 32-inch A4 model is a good example of how well it balances features and price.
Like the LG and Roku models, the resolution is under 1080p, but for a TV that’s under £300 we think that’s totally acceptable – and it is enough for this smaller panel when watching movies or gaming.
We love that the borders around the display are small, and the back is also quite slim so it will look good if mounted on your wall. Although we can’t deny that the lack of built-in voice assistance is a shame (it can still be activated via the remote), this set has access to all of the top streamers and YouTube – making it a good choice for a bedroom or kids’ playroom.

Good-looking and feature-rich, Samsung’s Q50A is our favourite smaller TV you can buy in 2023. The 1080p screen is a QLED, so colours and contrast are better than standard Full HD panels.
It also has one of the slimmest profiles of any 32-inch model on our list so it won’t take up too much space on your cabinet, and will sit quite flush if mounted.
You get all of the usual streamers and catch-up apps, including Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+, and we love that Bixby, Alexa and Google Assistant are all built in so you can flit between channels and change the volume with your voice without connecting a smart speaker or using the remote.
The downside is the price: at closer to £500 (although you can find it for £379), it’s expensive for a TV of this stature.

Samsung The Frame
£499 at Amazon
Add a touch of class to your room with this Samsung set, which is made to look like a picture frame and shows artwork when your screen isn’t being used, so it blends nicely into your decor. The screen is made with a matte material so it’s glare free (meaning you don’t have to worry about reflections ruining your art when the sun comes through your blinds) and if you don’t mind paying a bit extra you can customise The Frame’s scheme by choosing from dozens of border styles and colours. When it is on, the QLED panel makes colours pop and it has built-in voice control, too.

LG TVs consistently top our lists for user experience as we are big fans of the WebOS system that powers them. Performance is smooth and fast, plus it tracks your viewing to personalise the home screen apps, channels and account preferences.
This is a nice way to find new shows and movies, and the layout is intuitive and easy to navigate. This model is limited to 720p resolution like the Roku model on our list (although that’s completely fine for a smaller TV) and the borders around the display are slightly bigger than we would like, but this is ideal if you want a fuss-free telly.

This 1080p TV has a neat trick that makes it a perfect option for watching movies, known as ambilight. Unlike other sets on this list, the Philips 32PFS6905 has LED lighting that beams out from the edges in sync with the colours on the screen.
We love how immersive it makes movies, musicals and nature documentaries, and that it has three HDMI ports (most of the models on our list only have two)/
That means you have more flexibility when it comes to pairing gaming consoles, streaming devices and a soundbar. The silver frame and aluminium feet are stylish, and it supports Freeview and all of the major streaming apps and services, too.

What to consider when buying a 32-inch TV
Display
You won’t see high resolutions like 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) when you’re shopping for a small set – the screens don’t need all those extra pixels to look good. Instead, 32-inch TVs are usually 720p (HD Ready) or 1080p (Full HD), with the second option giving you the best picture and colours. We recommend going for Full HD, which is 1920 x 1080 pixels, if possible – however, a 720p resolution looks just fine if you’re watching from between 1.8 and three metres away. That’s perfectly suitable for many kitchens and bedrooms.
Audio
Smaller TVs mean smaller speakers, and if you’re buying a new set to watch loads of movies we highly recommend investing in a decent soundbar. The fact is that sound quality out-of-the-box isn’t going to be stunning at this screen size, although it’s passable for general viewing if it’s mounted on a kitchen wall, for example. Some models, such as the Q50A, let you pair a speaker via Bluetooth.
Voice control
Voice assistants let you control the search, navigation and functions of your TV hands-free. The two most common are Alexa and Google Assistant but Samsung usually has its own “Bixby” helper, too. The assistants can be built-in (so you don’t need a remote to launch them) but others either need that press or are described as “compatible” with assistants, so they’ll work via a speaker or streaming stick.
VESA
TVs come with a stand or feet that prop them up, but most also let you mount them to a wall using a bracket. You’ll see this called VESA, with popular sizes on 32-inch sets being 200 x 200 mm and 100 x 100 mm (horizontal x vertical). You can find the size by measuring the gaps between four pre-built screw holes on the back of your set in millimetres. Top tip: make sure the bracket holds the weight of your TV.
HDMI ports
Connecting a set-top box, Blu-ray player or gaming console? You’ll be using the HDMI ports on the back or side of the TV. Unfortunately, smaller sets are more limited in the amount you get (it’s usually two) so you should consider what you want to connect, and plan accordingly. If you’re connecting a next-generation gaming console, be aware that you won’t get the top resolution or refresh rates – it’ll be automatically downgraded to 720p/1080p resolution and 60Hz.
Products we also considered
There’s always an overwhelming amount of choice when buying a new TV, and there were several models that we considered for our list that didn’t quite make the cut. The Panasonic TX-32M330B is a solid choice if you are shopping for a 1080p display, but the casing is too chunky for us to recommend in 2023, especially if you’re wall mounting.
The Sony Bravia KD-32W800 is another impressive set but the price point was slightly too high for an HD Ready resolution and a thicker design than the similarly-priced top pick, the Samsung Q50A.
