Why did I buy a 32-inch 2K monitor and not a newfangled 4K and is there any point in overpaying for 144 Hz

This material was written by a site visitor and rewarded for it.

Apart from game consoles like Dendy and Sega, which I played on a black and white TV, my first normal monitor was a 12-inch Chinese monster. It seemed to me a miracle of technical thought, since now I could play in color. It was a used monitor, and at that time I was not very interested in such insignificant details, so its name has not been preserved in my memory. Unfortunately, the Chinese died a year later, so I had to look for a replacement for him. Luckily for me, the local shop decided to pick up my Chinese by giving me a hefty discount on a 15-inch Samtron. I sat with him until I graduated from the university and bought with one of my salaries 19inch LCD. Since then, a lot of monitors have been changed, but most recently I bought a Samsung Odyssey G5 LC32G54T. Today I will tell you why 2K, and not fashionable 4K, seemed to me the best choice.

Price . Obviously, first of all, I was guided by this parameter. Theoretically, I could allocate 2 times more money for a monitor, but every adult is aware that there are always areas where extra money may be needed. At the same time, it was necessary not to sell too cheap, so there was room for maneuver.

recommendations

Large screen. I had a 24″ monitor before, so I wanted to take the big leap. 27 inches seemed frivolous to me, and more than that did not fit on my desk. I even had to cut down one support, because, according to the idea of the creators of my workplace, an exceptionally small monitor was supposed to huddle there.

Display resolution. I have been choosing a new monitor for over a month. I studied all the pros and cons. I evaluated the characteristics and additional parameters, and as a result I decided to stop at 2K. It seemed to me that my GeForce RTX 2070 Super graphics card would not pull 4K. It is not clear how right I was, but in 2K I have no freezes even at the maximum graphics settings.

Curved series. I’ve had plenty of opportunity to sit in front of 32-inch monitors, but never behind a curved panel. It was interesting how much this will change the experience of watching movies and working with documents. In conclusion, I will tell you what came of it.

144Hz. Before this, I had a monitor with a refresh rate of 75 Hz. I did not see the difference between 60 and 75, so I hoped that it was there when switching to game frequencies.

Optional. VA didn’t really scare me, and spending money on NVIDIA G-Sync support seemed like sheer stupidity to me. The response time of the matrix is too overrated factor, as I could see more than a decade ago. Some other characteristics were also important to me (for example, HDMI connection), but in this case we will do without them.

Am I satisfied? Yes. Did I get what I expected? No. 144 Hz was the most disappointing, let’s just say: I put two monitors side by side (new and old). There is a difference, but the general feeling is clearly not the same as the advertising machine broadcasts. Useless feature. The next time I buy a monitor, I’ll stick with 144hz rather than go up to 240hz and up. A curved monitor in terms of user experience is no different from conventional ones. In a word – another useless function. Next time, you can ignore the claims of marketers that this is more familiar to the eye. As it turns out, my eyes don’t care.

The size of the screen makes me happy, but I didn’t notice a very strong improvement in the quality of the picture. Where is 2K? After buying a new monitor, I increased my internet speed from 100 Mbps to 200 Mbps by upgrading my router as well. The speed is very pleasing. Now, if I watch movies (sinful, because I download from torrents), then I choose a size of 30 GB or more. Surprisingly, there is no wow effect. But before I downloaded films of 10 GB. The situation is exactly the same in games. The size decides, but the notorious 2K is not felt at all. Maybe it was necessary to take the video card GeForce RTX 3090 and an 8K monitor?

Now about 4K. I recently loaded my monitor into a car and took it to a friend who bought a 32-inch Samsung LU32J590UQIXCI. We connected his monitor first, and then mine. It seems that on mine the picture looks nicer and smoother (each frog praises its swamp). My friend strongly disagrees with this. From his words, I have solid soap, and he has a clear picture. I didn’t notice any soap or clarity. In games in 2K on mine and 4K, he has no difference at all. Maybe it was necessary to look for someone with a more expensive monitor, but I decided to stop with comparisons on this. I also noticed the lack of content in 2K and even more so in 4K. I just watch movies with a huge bitrate. Sometimes I find 4K, but it’s quite rare. In short, compared to a small 32-inch monitor, this is a real breakthrough. As for the display resolution, when comparing high-quality content directly, you can notice some difference, but not critical. I remember moving from 19-inch TN to 21-inch IPS. Here it was a breakthrough. Perhaps if my previous monitor had been worse, the tone of the article would have been different, but in this case it can be stated that the text fits more, it is easier to work with documents, and I forgot about watching movies on a 51-inch 4K TV. It often sits for weeks, and this is the merit of my new monitor.
