Do you know the expression “size is not important”? It’s no secret that this phrase is commonly used when talking about . .. of course, about the 2022 iPhone SE. Let’s not delay the pleasant moment and proceed to unpacking.

SE 3 you will receive in such a classic box for Apple. It is a BOX, I must say. She is quite tiny. And no wonder: inside you will find a smartphone, a Lightning cable with a USB-C plug, a paper clip, documents and a sticker in the form of an apple. All! Nothing else. The most annoying thing, of course, is that there is no charging unit. Although what is in the box from the iPhone 13, what is in the box from the iPhone 13 mini – the contents are the same. And these are the flagships. Not to mention the not too expensive device: SE3 is the most budget modern iPhone. So think about whether this is an environmentally friendly solution, or the greed of manufacturers …

And as soon as we see the new iPhone, we immediately encounter some kind of break in the pattern.

Just imagine that a new iPhone was bought by a certain professor Lastochkin.
One day, our professor finds himself in a dark alley, where he is surrounded by healthy guys with unkind faces and dubious intentions. They snatch the smartphone from Lastochkin’s hands, but immediately give it back with disgust: “What is this, 6s? Junk!” and are taken away. Apparently, out of pity, they never rob our hero.

No wonder the hooligans in the dimly lit street mistook the SE3 for a 6s. With a quick glance, you won’t be able to tell the difference right away. Is this really a new iPhone?

Appearance of SE3 is outdated. A huge frame with a front camera on it and a home button below the display. Touch, not mechanical, fortunately.

iPhone SE 2022 display diagonal – 4.7. Eh … Weight 144 g, dimensions: 138.4 × 67.3 × 7.3 mm. Aspect ratio 16:9.

The back cover is also simple and familiar: a small protruding camera eye, a little to the right – a flash, in the middle – an apple icon. We have seen all this.

Right – power button, left – volume buttons and a slider to switch to silent mode. Above the screen and on the bottom edge are a microphone and stereo speakers. The Lightning port is located on the bottom edge. There is no 3.5mm audio jack.

In short, the SE3 looks exactly like the iPhone 8. Well, almost like the 6s, as our hooligans confirmed.

SE3 is slightly larger than the iPhone 12 mini or 13 mini, but outdated design, especially the giant bezels… What is it? Nostalgia game? Crisis of ideas? Emphasized visual difference between state employees and flagships? Masonic conspiracy? And perhaps everything is simpler – it is simply more financially profitable for Apple to produce smartphones in an outdated case, because the technology has been worked out, and there is probably still a large stock of components in stock … But who knows?

IPhone SE 3 case assembly.

On the other hand, Apple compensates for the unoriginal feeling with a cool case assembly. Just really cool.

Low carbon aircraft grade aluminum frame designed with the environment in mind. The smartphone is protected by the same special glass as the iPhone 13. Plus IP67 water resistance – full protection against dust and water resistance with short-term immersion to 1 meter. Although I still would not recommend diving with a smartphone into the pool.

Available in three colours: black, white and red. The latest colorway is (PRODUCT) RED and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this version will go to the AIDS Foundation.

So what exactly is SE 3? Not a button accordion, but a classic? Or is it an accordion?

Our new friend, Professor Lastochkin, thinks it’s a classic. He is completely satisfied with both the appearance of the device and its quality. It does not lag, it is comfortable in the hand, it supports LTE, 5G, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC. Fine!

The smartphone also has a built-in barometer, three-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, proximity and light sensors. SE3 can work with two cards: nano-Sim and eSIM formats, this is such a programmable SIM card sewn directly into the device.

TouchID is present, but FaceID is not. This is frustrating. FaceID is more convenient and familiar.

Apple iPhone SE 3 (2022) smartphone display.

But back to the display.

IPS Retina display. The text on this small 4.7-inch screen is still small, the blind professor has to squint to see it. Resolution – 1334×750 pixels – not even Full HD. Also, the screen refresh rate is only 60 Hz! Density – 326 pixels per inch. Well, so-so …

Small size aside, this is a cool display, with 114.7% sRGB color space coverage and 81.2% DCI-P3 coverage. The Delta-E deviation is only 0.21 with an ideal value of 0. The screen transmits shades very accurately. Color gamut P3.

The standard display contrast is also good – 1400 to 1.

The SE 3 has also been equipped with True Tone technology, which helps to adapt the color balance to lighting conditions. The technology is designed, for example, to ensure that the light from the screen does not hurt the eyes in the dark.

Maximum brightness is high – 625 nits, minimum – 2.6 nits. Given the anti-glare properties of the display, the screen is normally visible even on a sunny day.

The smartphone has an automatic brightness control that works with the light sensor. It works adequately, and in which case the brightness can always be adjusted manually. Moreover, the automatic function depends on the position of the brightness slider: they can set the desired brightness level for current and similar current conditions.

More pleasant: thanks to the oleophobic (grease-repellent) glass coating, fingerprints are easily removed, and new ones appear at a slower rate than on ordinary glass.

Despite its size, the SE 3 has a really high quality and good display.

But Professor Lastochkin is concerned about other qualities of the device. After all, our scientific creator is neither more nor less than a time machine! And right now, he is heading back in time to 2017 to take some important research pictures.

Luckily, the camera on the SE3 allows the professor to take good photos.

The 2022 iPhone SE has only one main camera. Compared to competitors equipped with 2-3 cameras, this may seem like a disadvantage. But it’s about quality. Artificial intelligence helps the optics, which provides a powerful A15 Bionic processor, so the pictures come out great.

So, the main camera is 12 MP, with f/1.8 aperture. This is a wide angle camera with PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus) and OIS (Optical Image Stabilization).

Even in low light, Smart HDR 4 captures high quality images.
